Meeting Summary of May 6by Administrator, Web

05-06-09 Rotary Summary

(More photos available after text)

This was another of President BERT's innovative Chat 'N Chew meetings. No speaker, but plentyof speaking among Rotarians. It went like this:

The reception line consisted of Jason Stein's Membership Involvement members.

As usual, there was Bert's Wine Line, with participation not only in the meeting room, but alsoout on the . whaddya call it? . veranda.

Those of you who participate: how do you do it? I'd be asleep all afternoon!

At about 12:20, President BERT rang the bell and told us that we have about 35 minutes forvisiting with fellow Rotarians.

Incidentally, the luncheon had a Hawaiian theme, thanks to Cyril Isnard's Fairmont Hotel.

So we chatted among ourselves. I was lucky enough to sit next to Police Chief Rob Davis, so mychatting was especially fun.

At one o'clock, President Bert rang the bell and started the meeting. In other words, the planwas to devote the first half hour - normally President's time - to the Chatting. And devote thenormal speaker's time to what would normally take place before one o'clock.

With PHIL STRONG and PAUL TUMASON leading us, we sang God Bless America.

President Bert called on TODD TREKELL to provide the Reflection, which Todd did, admirably. Before he began, he noted that it would be brief. Some of us, having already endured standingthroughout the singing, were delighted to hear that. It was something of a departure from someof our more recent Reflections which, while interesting, were really too long. Editorialcomment: Does the Reflections Committee (if there is one) appropriately instruct the Reflectorswhen assigning them?

Anyhow, Todd's brief reflection follows:

If you think you are beaten, you are;If you think you dare not, you don't.If you'd like to win, but think you can't,It's almost a cinch you won't.If you think you'll lose, you're lost,For out in the world we findSuccess begins with a fellow's will; It's all in the state of mind.

If you think you're outclassed, you are; You've got to think high to rise. You've got to be sure of yourself beforeYou can ever win a prize.Life's battles don't always goTo the stronger or faster man;But soon or late the man who winsIs the one who thinks he can.

WALTER D. WINTLE, Thinking aka "The Man Who Thinks He Can"

Although JOHN MCLEOD was scheduled to do his thing, he was called away from the meeting, and we went directly to introduction of guests, with CHERYL MARTINEZ handling the one of thetravelling microphones. I noted that, although he wasn't scheduled to do so, CLARENCE STONEhandled the other one. Clarence made a point of the fact that he is related to LARRY STONE. .Orwas it the other way around: namely, that he was NOT related to LARRY.

Appropriate boos.

President BERT called on JACK WIMBERLY to talk about the San Jose Store Front Project. Jacksuggested we take a look at the website called sjhistoricstorefront.com. I just did. Thecommittee is hoping to place pictures of historic San Jose in storefronts, especially during theupcoming Jazz Festival. Asks for us to provide information about those pictures. Sounds like avery interesting project for Rotary.

President BERT next alluded to his impending departure from the President's podium and said he'dlike to thank two other Rotarians who have helped him this year. He called up JOE WYNN andJACK HAYES and thanked them for their activities in connection with the weekly wine-line.

He asked us how we felt about the Chat 'n Chew routine and got a lot of positive "yeahs"

Told us that, next week, he's going to see the Giants play and that, as part of that trip, he'sgoing to visit with an old Rotarian: Rabbi JOE GITIN, who will be 103 years old.

And that, pretty much, was it. The time was 1:11, and BERT told us that the meeting was over, but that we could stay and continue our conversations, which some of us did.
