Hello fellow Rotarians of “The Greatest Club.” The Rotary year has finally started as we marked the first check on the Rotary calendar with our first regular meeting last July 3. I was very inspired with the presence of 36 of our fellow Rotarians, led by our energetic District Governor Manny Along and his likewise energetic district secretary Hubert Quiblat who came in after attending the induction ceremonies of the Rotary Club of Northern Bukidnon thereby also qualifying our next meeting with a letchon which I gladly supplied in grateful appreciation for your support. Thank you RCCDO.

A special board was called after the meeting where we got our first 100% attendance to our board meeting, (a big thanks to our officers)mainly to formally approve the resumption of our hosting the Interplast Australia Medical Mission this coming 11 August to the 22nd, and also to the appointment of PAG Chito Sarraga as the project chair. PAG Chito has already been working very hard on this project since April, when Interplast conducted a security assessment of our city which we passed. He also emphasized the need for our club to raise P80,000 which will be our share in the projected cost of the endeavor. He started the ball rolling by donating P10,000 signifying his and president Juvy’s sponsorship of 10 patients. Thank you PAG Chito.

Week number 2 will also be an exciting one

with our hosting the Rotary New Year’s party/ Balik Escuela for our daycare in Gusa which will be held on July 11 Friday at the Philippine Sinter Clubhouse in Villa Ernesto at 1:30pm which we are conducting with the Anns. We had to fast forward this activity at the request of DG Manny to be able to participate in the first issue of the GML for the month of July. I always look forward to our annual hosting of this activity with the Anns where i get inspired when i see the happy faces of the children when they receive the goodies and school supplies RCCDO and RARCCDO always gives out to them every year. The next week we will do the same to the daycare in Mindanilla as scheduled.

This week we will have some visitors from RC East Urban led by PP Ella Yu. Welcome to the Mother Club. They are here to drum up attendance to the Membership Development seminar that they will be hosting on July 26 I have promised them our whole hearted support of this district project. As I told them RCCDO will be there :-)

Last week we were also exploring the venue possibilities and we heard good things about the venue we are presently trying out which is Kagayanon Restaurant. We are still exploring other possibilities with regard to venue and would appreciate your comments and or suggestions on this matter. And finally our club will also be remitting to the Rotary Foundation of our 1st salvo for the year we are hoping to remit 4,000-5,000 dollars hopefully putting us 1/3 of the way to our goal of $15,000 this year. Thank you RCCDO.

And finally we will try to fill up the remaining committees in the organization with their chairmen, as I have mentioned last week I would really prefer volunteers to chair the committees, as I believe volunteers work harder and happier at their assignments. This will bring us closer and much faster to the creation of our club plans and objectives which will become our blueprint for this Rotary ear.

JULY 2014I find many traditional Chinese values reflected in Rotary: values of service and responsibility, of respect for family and for others. Sometimes I call Confucius the world’s first Rotarian, because even though he died 2,500 years before Rotary was founded, his ideas are very much Rotary ideas. And one of the things he said was:.

In English, you say, “It is better to light a single candle than to sit and curse the darkness.”

I think that one line sums up the way we in Rotary approach the problems of the world. There is so much difficulty. There are so many people who need help. Many people look at this and say, “There is nothing I can do.” So they do nothing – and nothing changes.

But this is not the Rotary way. The Rotary way is to light a candle. I light one candle, you light one candle –

and so do 1.2 million other Rotarians. Together, we can do so much more than we could ever do alone. Together, we can light up the world.

In 2014-15, I am asking each of you to light your own Rotary candle – and Light Up Rotary together.

There are so many ways to Light Up Rotary. I hope many of you will choose to host a Rotary Day, to show your community what Rotary is and what we do. I hope you will involve your Rotaract and Interact clubs in your service, to bring the new generation of the Rotary family closer to Rotary membership. And I hope you will keep Rotary strong by inviting new members into Rotary – including your own spouses and family.

Perhaps the most important thing we can do to Light Up Rotary together is to finish the job we’ve been working on for more than a quarter of a century: the eradication of polio. We are so close to our goal. But we will get there only if we keep up the fight, keep up the momentum, and close the funding gap for the polio endgame plan.

Light Up Rotary together is our theme for this year, but it is more than just a theme. It is how we in Rotary see the world and our role in it. We believe that no one should sit alone in the darkness. Instead, we can come together, all 1.2 million of us, to Light Up Rotary. This is our goal – and my challenge to you.

1st Regular Weekly Meeting:Last July 3, 2014, the Rotary Club of Cagayan de Oro (RCCDO) held it’s first regular Weekly Meeting for RY 2014-15 at the Kagay-Anon Restaurant at the Lim Ket Kai Mall. The meeting was attended by 36 members and was a good way to kick-off the new Rotary year.

The meeting was held at Kagay-Anon Restaurant by virtue of a Board Resolution which offered a way for all our members to try the food, ambiance and suitability as a permanent meeting venue for our club. For P300/pax we had 5 menu items. Of course, we also had the lechon donated by PAG John Mark Sarraga.

Initial feedback from many of the attendees indicated that Kagay-Anon could definitely become our permanent meeting venue. Most commented favorably about the ease of parking and the suitability of the venue for a Rotary Meeting. To this end, it was decided by the BOD to hold the 2nd Regular Weekly Meeting at the Kagay-Anon so that our members may continue to assess the venue in preparation for a voting on the venue issue.

2nd BOD Meeting:After the 1st Weekly Meeting at Kagay-Anon Restaurant, the Board of Directors held an emergency meeting to discuss the planned Interplast activity. The meeting was attended by all members of the BOD. The meeting began with a motion by Director & PP Paul Ferrer to approve the proposal to hold the Interplast activity this Rotary Year 2014-15. This motion was unanimously approved by the BOD.

President Luigi then formalized the appointment of PAG Chito Sarraga as Chairman of the Interplast Activity Committee. In reality, PAG Chito has already been coordinating efforts for this activity since April 2014. He coordinated with Interplast Australia to conduct a security assessment of Cagayan de Oro and a facilities inspection of the CDO City Hospital. The actual security assessment and ocular inspection was done on May 9-11, 2014 by a team composed of Ms. Prue Ingram, CEO of Interplast Australia, Dr. Mike McGlyn, Ms. Dee McGlyn and Mr. Shaun Filer, a security expert. It is noteworthy that Cagayan de Oro City and the City Hospital passed the inspection parameters.

PAG Chito informed the BOD that the target date of the Interplast activity is on August 11, 2014. He added that there will be 7 members of the party. He emphasized that the club needs to raise P80,000 as counterpart funding and the he has already begun his fund raising efforts. He also stressed that the CDO City Mayor’s Office will be strongly supporting this activity. The Director of the CDO City Hospital, Dr. Ramon Neri, has also expressed his full support for us.
