President Norm de Grussa: Introduction to Board Directors and Members meeting Confirming that as mentioned at previous forum that the programme that was proposed is now in place. The Changeover Meeting has occurred. International Service: Through Clive, Jacob is now back from Africa and will be giving a presentation at a later meeting. Club Service and Membership: Possible new member in Madelaine. Dolphins Wishing Well: $20,000.00 collected, Telethon $7,080.00, Each Club has received $10,000.00 this year. General Business: There has been a request to change banks from the ANZ to Westpac which was agreed, Ray is going to follow up on Walking Works as a project to discuss at a later date. We have been informed about the Hillarys Quiz Night. The minutes of the last meeting were agreed correct by Bill Duffy and seconded by Andrew Kininmonth. Matters arising from the minutes: Quiz Night, Owen was asked what progress or information we had on this. Owen had received an email asking if he had organised anything and Owen said that he is not the organiser he is only the man at the front asking the questions. The question is if our club was going to be a participant in running the event or would Hillarys be totally responsible to organise and run the event. The decision was made that we would not be participating but if we could organise a table or two for the night that would be the limit of our involvement apart from Owen and his younger brother being the Quiz Master. We can help with advertising the event. Changeover Meeting: President Norm said that he thought the meeting went very well and had a good feed and was very happy with what the Wanneroo Tavern presented on the night and knew what they were doing. Secretarys Report: Graeme Smith; Charitable Collections Licence Renewal to be lodged for the end of July, Australia Post organising for authorised people to collect registered mail etc from the P.O. Box, Account from Rotary Downunder for 22 members due by 31st July, Account from Rotary International again for 22 members as at 1st January 2013 for $2,530.00. Graeme also outlined a request from a teacher at the Ellenbrook Christian College asking for assistance to go on a trip to the Middle East to empower students through improved education by training teachers and also would be working with the youth. The members felt that this was not our place to assist personal people. Treasurers Report: Clive presented the report as Andrew has hit the floor running. Foundation Account $27,888.00, in the Club Account $13,825.00. We normally have $5,000 in the Club fund. When we have more income from the Dolphins this will give us the funds for donations etc. The account has not been opened at Westpac as yet and Clive will Assist Andrew in getting things organised before Clive goes away on the 4th August. Subscriptions: It was agreed on Clives recommendation that the fees be kept the same as last year being $275.00 for each member as Sargeants fines, surplus from the meals makes up for any shortfall.

Page 4: Rotary bulletin 02 2013

International: Debbie outlined the project that she has underway in Thailand this year, and how there is a need for a safe house so there is a need for equipment etc. Youth Services: Owen reported on RYLA and a new initiative called LEAP. Leadership Extension Alumni Program. Attending the LEAP program requires the pre requisite of attending a RYLA camp. Owen said he will be catching up with the program director to obtain more information. Vocational: Neil informed us that we are having a meeting at Clives home on the 22nd July with Jacob giving us a talk on his recent trip back to Africa. 1st and the 3rd meetings of every month with guest speakers and every 2nd is a Forum Meeting. Depending on how many weeks are in the month and this month the 29th will be a vocational night and is working on that at present. Neil suggested a night at my property as I now have a home office and have a sausage siz-zle. Peter Miskelly will look after the vocational visits once he gets back. Neil suggested to the Board to approve a Pride of Workmanship Award to the businesses that we visit. The Vocational Excellence Awards Plaques are $36.30 each. Guest Speaker Plaques are $13.75 each. The presentation of these plaques could be entered into the Rotary Down Under publication. These evenings could have just a BBQ or finger food that we can organise to keep the prices down. We can vote on which way we want to go with these costings. Owen mentioned with other clubs that when a number of businesses were visited a particular company was selected out of the visited businesses to receive the award but we can discuss further how we as a club proceed with this. Publicity: Meeting with Rex to be organised to discuss Walking Apparatus. Buzz Goodacre has passed on the box with all of the Historical information that I will work through to insert onto Facebook etc. I would like to get updated photos of all members to put onto the website. The Bulletin I have given a slight facelift and will endeavour to add more content as well as the Meeting Notes, Roster etc. If any members have any points of interest to add to the Bulletin please email me at [email protected] with any info they feel should be included. Jokes etc and any local news. President Norm discussed about the Website and feels the need to revamp this a bit more but is unsure how to hand it over to anybody else. I will discuss with Norm further. Dolphin Wishing Well: Clive touched on the roster for the cleaning and commented on that he was the only one from Wanneroo that attended with 2 from Hillarys that was enough but we need to check our roster to ensure we attend to our duty. Raffle Prize Winners: 1st Prize: Neil Cook 2nd Prize: Norm de Grussa Subscription fees: These were agreed at $275.00 Moved by Clive Bain and Seconded by Andrew Kininmonth (the 2 treasurers) General Business: President Norm On the monthly program the 4th and 5th week are to be other than the normal meeting. Also looking to incorporate the Banksia Grove Soccer team and also the Kingsway Football Club during the Footy season. Perhaps go to a game with the BBQ and Banner etc being on a Saturday. Also we could incorporate the Dolphin Wishing Well and have an instructional

Page 5: Rotary bulletin 02 2013

cleaning come BBQ function at the site. Also Norm has asked the District Governor to obtain the dates for all of the future Leadership Training Sessions to incorporate into a board meeting and the Harold Harley Trophy hasn’t been competed for a few years now and also like to deal with membership as Norm has not appointed a single member as he feels it is something we should all do. One of the meetings to be a Membership Interest Meeting as a matter of grave urgency as our numbers are low. Norm has a couple Kaye and Mark Douglas who may be interested. Norm received an email for another lady by the name of Chinelle Van der Westhuizen from South Africa and has been invited to attend next week. It was agreed that the club will pay for the meal of the proposed member when they attend their first meeting. Norm has also emailed Mal King to follow up why he stopped coming. No word from Dave Gentry regarding membership. Projects: Norm had invited Laura Douglas to come along as Norms guest to get other University Students involved in projects. Norm asked Phil if there was any update on the Twin Cities Walk but this is still in sleep mode at present. Debbie is in charge of organising what can be done with the Kingsway Car Boot sale. Sergeants Session: Phil needed to locate the birthdays and anniversary dates to know who to fine so he has been put on the right track by Neil. No birthdays or anniversarys this week according to everyone keeping quiet lol. Raffle winners continue to support thanks to Neil and President Norm. Neils wife apparently found out what an ugly looking …….. he was after her eye surgery J. The Aussies had to contribute due to the loss to the British Lions. This raised an objection from Tom who doesn’t quite know what race he belongs to any more since being called a Pommie ……… for many years but now he is supposed to be an Aussie. Paul made his contribution of $5.00 for having a nice holiday. Comment was made by Phil that it took 77 years for the Poms to win Wimbledon by having a Scotsman win it for them. Owen was not fined for apparently being sour about something, possibly his left shoulder. Perth International Golf Tournament: 14th to the 20th October. Similar type of task to last year apart from scanning some passes at the main gate. Should be an easy stint. Well worth the effort for the money raised for the club. Friends and family must be informed that with the pass they are able to watch the golf before or after their shift and entry on all days. Plus we are kitted out with a hat and spray jacket. Some people could start at 6.00am to do a stint before work etc. Well worth the club getting behind this great project. No roster being formulated as yet but well worth getting people involved. Tom asked he would be an Aussie for that week. As an income for the club we received $7,000 last year which we donated $600.00 back to one of our main supporters the footy club. A No Risk No Brainer event for us. Relocating from Wanneroo Tavern: Suggestion was to go to the Wanneroo Sports and Country Club as it would be a lot cheap-er with our own bar and service. Norm suggested we could get out of it for $25.00 per person including the raffle for a minimum of 15 members but Clive advised there could be an $70.00 kitchen charge on top. Only other problem is that there is a Zumba Class running in the adjoining room. I asked what age the participants were doing the Zumba Class to much laughter.

Page 6: Rotary bulletin 02 2013

Neil asked about having simple finger food in place of a full meal at some functions. Norm hasn’t discussed this with the Wanneroo Tavern as yet. We have to discuss further before making this radical move as Clive mentioned a problem of continuity of kitchen staff at the Country Club. Owen suggested the Belgrade Village as another venue and Tom seconded it is quite good. It was suggested that we give the Wanneroo Country Club a trial at the next Directors Meeting which is the second Monday of next month. Located on the corner of Frederick street and Crisafulli Avenue in Wanneroo. 100% Attendance Award: I was pleased to received a nice Sheaffer pen for my 100% attendance last year with the pro-viso to do a makeup pretty quickly. It was unfortunate that I had issues that night with my fa-ther again with his heart at Charlie Gardiners again but all good. Again apologies to all for missing an important milestone for the club. Thank you to all. Oh yes makeup to be made within a fortnight President Norm.

Confirmation that all flags etc are not required at the Directors Meeting and no objections.

Teacher seeking financial assistance:

I was agreed that it is not part of our usual role to give financial assistance to an individual person. Graeme was given the task to write an appropriate letter of decline.

Guest Speaker next week 6:15-6:45:

Railroad tracks.

The US standard railroad gauge (distance between the rails) is 4 feet, 8.5 inch-

es. That's an exceedingly odd number.

Why was that gauge used? Because that's the way they built them in England ,

and English expatriates designed the US railroads.

Why did the English build them like that? Because the first rail lines were built

by the same people who built the pre-railroad tramways, and that's the gauge

they used.

Why did 'they' use that gauge then? Because the people who built the tram-

ways used the same jigs and tools that they had used for building wagons,

which used that wheel spacing.

Page 9: Rotary bulletin 02 2013

Why did the wagons have that particular odd wheel spacing? Well, if they tried to use

any other spacing, the wagon wheels would break on some of the old, long distance roads

in England , because that's the spacing of the wheel ruts.

So who built those old rutted roads? Imperial Rome built the first long distance roads

in Europe (including England ) for their legions. Those roads have been used ev-

er since.

And the ruts in the roads? Roman war chariots formed the initial ruts, which everyone

else had to match for fear of destroying their wagon wheels.

Since the chariots were made for Imperial Rome , they were all alike in the matter of

wheel spacing. Therefore the United States standard railroad gauge of 4 feet, 8.5

inches is derived from the original specifications for an Imperial Roman war chariot. Bu-

reaucracies live forever.

So the next time you are handed a specification/procedure/process and won-

Page 10: Rotary bulletin 02 2013

der 'What horse's arse came up with this?' , you may be exactly right. Imperial Ro-

man army chariots were made just wide enough to accommodate the rear ends of

two war horses. (Two horses' arses.)

Now, the twist to the story:

When you see a Space Shuttle sitting on its launch pad, there are two big

booster rockets attached to the sides of the main fuel tank. These are solid rock-

et boosters, or SRBs. The SRBs are made by Thiokol at their factory

in Utah

The engineers who designed the SRBs would

have preferred to make them a bit fatter, but the SRBs had to be shipped by

train from the factory to the launch site. The railroad line from the factory hap-

pens to run through a tunnel in the mountains, and the SRBs had to fit through

that tunnel. The tunnel is slightly wider than the railroad track, and the railroad

Page 11: Rotary bulletin 02 2013

track, as you now know, is about as wide as two horses' behinds.

So, a major Space Shuttle design feature of what is arguably the world's most

advanced transportation system was determined over two thousand years ago by

the width of a horse's arse. And you thought being a horse's arse wasn't im-

portant? Ancient horse's arses control almost everything...

and CURRENT Horse's Arses in Brussels and London are controlling eve-

rything else!

I do hope this has been helpful !!
