W elcome to the March edition of ROSSINGTON ROSSINGTON TODAYTODAY. This is our 5th Birthday edition!
The last 5 years have flown by, and during that time we have doubled the circulation of Rossington Today to now include almost every home in Rossington.
It has been another tight squeeze trying to fit everything into your magazine this month. What we really need is just a few more advertisers then we could increase our page numbers and offer several more pages for community content as well. Who do you know that would benefit from advertising in this magazine? Why not pass on our contact details?
The next edition will be delivered to you from 26th March. Please ensure that anything that you would like to be included in it, is with me by Friday 11th March.
Best Wishes, Paula

Cause for a Cuppa
Hiya. Come on in. The kettle has just finished boiling. Have a seat and take the load off. It is ALWAYS great having you ‘round for our monthly chats with a nice brew and a biscuit. (Oh, by the way, if anyone has the final answer on the difference between a “cookie” and a “biscuit”, please let me know. I was debating with our church teens about that a couple weeks ago.)
I know that Mothering Sunday is next month. But you won’t get your April Rossington Today until after the fact. So I would like to express to each Mum a huge “Happy Mother’s Day!”
We have been here before I know but if you are anything like me, we forget so easily. I find so many parents see themselves as failures. There are many reasons for this. I find people put themselves up against someone they consider to be the “perfect Mum” or “Supermum”. That concept should stay in the realm of the comic strip. You do the best you can for your children. OK, so there are some areas that we need support. There are loads of organisations (including churches!) that can provide that help. There is no shame in saying you could use a helping hand. But let’s turn the coin over for a bit.
You love your children. Sacrifice and motherhood go hand in hand. I have an article from the 8 September edition of Metro. It speaks of the horror of a mother who was forced to make a split second decision as her car plunged into a dyke. Her 2 year old daughter was strapped in a car seat while her 16 year old son was stuck in the submerged car. She, herself escaped through an open window, devastated over what to do. She grabbed her daughter and brought her to the surface. Paramedics restrained her from going back for her son. The police did reach him but he died in hospital later.
Was that mother “perfect” in all she did. Without knowing her at all, I can confidently say NO. Did she love her children with a God-given love, YES. Are you perfect? NO. But you love your children and do so many things that are good. How about this Mother’s Day … celebrate that love you and all that you do? Oh, and by the way, have a great Mothers Day!
(If you would like to come by for a cuppa, just give me a bell. Eric Simpson ... [email protected] … 07828141472)

T ickhill & District Lions
It only seems like yesterday when we were updating you all on our Christmas activities and Easter eggs are already in the shops! This in-
cludes 40 giant chocolate Easter eggs which we at Tickhill & District Lions will be raffling off to raise money for good causes within our community and beyond. Shops and businesses all over the district are selling tickets and dis-playing the eggs, which are each more than a foot tall and contain about a kilogram (or 2.2 lbs) of delicious milk chocolate. So if you keep your eyes open you can’t miss them, and for just the price of a raffle ticket one could be all yours (although there really would be enough to share).
Also a reminder that on the evening of Wednesday April 6th, Tickhill & District Lions will be holding a fundraising Sportsmen’s din-ner at Doncaster Golf Club where the line-up includes two top comedians. Kevin Connelly is a star of the BBC TV and radio series, Dead Ringers and has recorded numerous voiceo-vers for both television and radio, including being part of Talk Radio's World Cup team. Joining Kevin will be twice Variety Club “Comedian of the Year”, Martin Gold and the evening will be hosted by Master of Ceremo-nies, Malcolm Lord.
Tickets are on sale at £32.50 a head for dinner and entertainment. To book your place please contact The Lions on 01302 743760 or 750050.
M ayflower Animal Sanctuary, Narrow Lane, Bawtry Nr Doncaster.
Thank goodness the weather seems to be turning a little warmer and it real-ly makes you feel spring is around the corner.
Our puppy block has been well occupied since the Christmas period with 3 sets of puppies born within weeks of one another. One litter is ready for their new home but the other 2 litters are still quite young.
Amongst others we, have taken in 3 aban-doned Staffordshire bull terriers over the Christmas period all of which were found tied up and left. We are finding this a major prob-lem at the moment, as the economic climate worsens we are finding more dogs needing new homes.
We also have lots of kittens that need re hom-ing which is surprising at this time of the year, as the influx is usually at its worst in the spring.
We are also taking a deep breath regarding our financial year end. Our donations are down and all charities are struggling some-what. Not at least ours
On a brighter note look up our 2 star dogs, Bella and Doug on Face book, you can see how there new life is changing every day.
We would like to thank everyone for taking their unwanted clothes to the Sanctuary for recycling. This is on on going project so any unwanted clothes please drop off at the Sanc-tuary.
If anyone would like to get involved in fund raising it would be wonderful please let us know. Or if you have any ideas you would like to put into place to raise money for this very worth while charity call us.
We still require volunteers for our Charity shop in Manton, so if anyone has the odd day to spare again please let us know.
Don’t forget our Charity Summer Ball 11th June held at Ye Olde Bell Barnby Moor Nr Ret-ford. Please let us know in good time should you require tickets which are £40 per person. Tables are being reserved now.

ROSSINGTON HISTORY GROUP - March 27th, 2011 is census day. Governments of every era have recognised the need to collect information on their most valuable asset – their people. The first thorough survey of England was in 1086 when William the Conqueror ordered the production of the Domesday Book which provides us with a remarkable picture of life in Norman times. During Tudor and Stuart times, bishops were made responsible for counting the number of families in their diocese, but Britain was very reluctant to adopt the idea of a regular official census. Towards the end of the 18th Century it became obvious that there was little idea about the number of people living in Britain and in 1800 Parliament passed the Census Act. The first official census of England and Wales was carried out on March 10th, 1801. Information was collected on a parish basis where the overseers of the poor, “substantial landholders” and local clergy had a responsibility to collect data. They had to provide information on the number of inhabited and uninhabited houses and how many families occupied them; the number of people in the parish and their employment; and numbers of births, marriag-es and deaths. The statistics were collected, sworn before the local JP, then collated by the Home office and laid before Parliament. A similar format was followed in 1811, 1821 and 1831, with some additional questions. For example, in 1821, age was asked in order to assess the number of men able to bear arms. The census of 1841 was the first to record more detailed information and is considered to be the first modern UK census. Each householder was required to complete a census schedule giving the address, the names, ages, sexes, occupations and places of birth of each individual residing in his or her accommodation. If there was no one in the household who could write, the enumerator who collected the details would record the information. All the information was copied into the census enumerators’ book, by hand. The 1851 census was the first to record the numbers living on vessels in inland waters or at sea (including the Royal Navy and merchant navy), those serving abroad with the forces and with the East India Company, and British subjects residing overseas. In addition, questions were added about the relationship of each individual to the head of the household and whether any member of the household was blind or dumb. By the time of the 1871 census, people were asked whether any member of the household was an “imbecile or idiot” or “feeble minded”, a question that was retained until 1911. In 1871 and 1881, people were asked if they were unemployed – a question not then repeated until 1931, in 1891 whether they were an employee or employer and in 1901 whether they were working at home. Information about every person in the land was processed by an army of clerks using nothing more than pens and paper. Census taking became a little easier in 1911 when punch cards and mechanical sorting and counting machines were introduced. Computers were first used in 1961 and now play an essential role. Since 1801 there has been a census every 10 years except in 1941 during the Second World War. A new Census Act in 1920 made it possible for a government to hold a census at any time, but no sooner than 5 years after the last census.
Some census facts and figures. Nationally:- * The first official headcount in 1801, revealed that the population of Great Britain was 9.3 million. The 2001 census showed a figure of 58.8 million. * In 1801 the number of households was 2 million. In 2011, the number of households is expected to be around 26 million. * The average household size in 1801 was 5.6 people. By 1901 this had fallen to 5.1 and by 2001, to 2.4.
In Yorkshire:- * The population increased almost five-fold between 1801 and 1991. * Between 1851 and 1901 the number of people employed on the railways rose from 2,979 to 36,808. * In 1881, 7% of the female population were employed as indoor domestic servants. * In 1851, there were 21 chimney sweeps aged between 5 and 9. * In 1801 the average household contained 5 people compared to 2.5 in 1991. The 1861 census showed that the top ten occupations in Yorkshire were:-
1. Labourer 5. Dress Maker 9. Tailor 2. Servant 6. Housekeeper 10. Stone mason 3. Worsted weaver/spinner 7. Carter 4. Coal miner 8. Woollen weaver . Finally, it seems that cold, wintry spells of the past have inspired children’s names, with “Winter Day”, “Winter Frost” and “Winter White” appearing in census returns up to 1911, and 1901 saw 639 people with the first name “Christmas”. Will the same be true of children born this winter? Most of us will never know because the 2011 data remains confidential until 2111. To celebrate 100 years of new Rossington in 2012, the history group is hoping to embark on a new project. If you would be willing to loan photographs or film of Rossington taken during this period to help us in this venture please contact one of the following: 01302 340403 or 01302 868774.

Phytotherapy/Herbal Medicine
Phytotherapy is the correct name for herbal medicine, and refers to medicine made with plants as the primary ingredient. Using plants to treat illness is one of the oldest forms of therapy and is still used in many places, as the primary form of health care.
Whilst the UK is still dragging its heels in recognizing the many benefits of herbal medicine, in other European countries, it is a very normal part of treatment and a quick look through the average family medicine chest will reveal herbal products for eve-rything from the common cold to first aid.
Although herbal remedies are safe and effective, it is imperative that you know exactly how to use them. Most can be safely taken alongside regular medicines however there are those that will interact or be totally unsuitable for certain individuals, so all care should be taken and self- medicating (often with nothing more than a little internet research) should be avoided just as with regular medicine. Get professional advice!
A qualified phytotherapist trains for years to know what herbal treatments are appropriate for which conditions, and for whom they are best used.
Vanessa Kramer at our in-clinic phyto-pharmacy at the Alexandra Clinic offers advice and free 10 minute appointments. This ensures that you will receive the correct remedy and that you are safe using it. She can also safely recommend the correct doses for children, who should not be given a normal adult dose of herbal medicines. She can also make some customized items such as creams and flower remedies.
Come along and see how herbal medicine can improve you health.
Rossington Wheelers Cycling Club – March News
The club held its 11th annual presentation evening on Friday 11th of February where club mem-bers and partners enjoyed a night out socially and the 2010 club award winners became known. The award winners on the night were:
Best all-rounder (10, 25 and 50 mile Time Trials), 21mph average - John Scully
Fastest club 10 mile Time Trial, 23 mins approx. - Richard Baldwin
Most improved rider 2009 – 2010 (Club 10 mile Time Trials) - Colin Taylor
Hill climb trophy (Clifton hill Time Trial), 2m 40s approx. - Richard Baldwin
Its worth noting that previous winners of these awards include Graham Briggs and Richard Lam-bert, both of Rossington. Graham now races professionally for the Rapha Condor Sharp Cycling Team that are prominent on both ITV4 and Eurosport through the summer and Richard is heav-ily involved with the SKY Professional Cycling Team ‘Team SKY’ on the full pro-tour, this proves that the chances are there for young cyclists with the motivation. This said much of the club’s activity revolves around more social rides and ‘club runs’ rather than races against the clock so it’s not purely a competitive club scene. On top of our own awards Richard Baldwin was North Midlands Cycling Federation Best Junior All-rounder and John Scully was second in the Senior Middle Distance section of the same organisation.
The major summer event that the club is embarking on has now been set – the ‘Coast 2 Coast’ charity ride will take place from Blackpool to Filey (152 miles approx.) on Saturday 4th June 2011, with overnight stay in Blackpool Friday night (oh dear..!!!) and Filey Saturday night with a recovery ride Sunday morning to Flamborough Head. We anticipate around 18 riders undertak-ing the challenge so it should be quite an event…?
Club runs in the last month have included some tough hilly rides around the ‘Hootens’ and up to Wentworth (particularly hard out into the wind) and steadier flatter rides to Major Oak and Normanby Hall. Rides have averaged 12-15 riders with some new faces and we can expect to go through the 20 rider mark at some point I’m sure….? With the C2C ride looming the mileage of the rides will steadily increase, as is normal going towards summer although a series of special training runs will compliment the usual club run list through April and May with at least 2 ‘century’ 100 mile rides thrown in. Club Runs scheduled for March are:
06/3/11 Askern via Snaith 60 mile Flat (windy) 13/3/11 Rosies via Sturton 60 mile Rolling 20/3/11 Sherwood Pines 65 mile Rolling 27/3/11 Thaymar via Carlton-on-Trent 70 mile Rolling
Further details of upcoming runs and route maps of previous runs and all other club infor-mation is available at www.rossingtonwheelers.co.uk or by calling in to see club chairman Les Hudson at Hudson Cycles on King Avenue.

Rossington Parish Council News
The Parish Council meeting held on Tuesday 8th February discussed a wide range of topics In the Public forum questions were asked regarding the Parish Council’s position on D.M.B.C.’s recent decision to close Rossington Branch Library along with 13 others around the Borough. The member of the Public that raised the question was assured that the Parish Council had registered their protests directly to both the Borough Council and the Rossington ward members on a regu-lar basis from the very start of the consultation process. The Chairman, Cllr. Terry Wilde assured everyone present that even at this late stage Rossington Parish Council would do everything in its power to try to prevent closure of this valuable community resource, and retain the library in its current position in the village.
The Police were not present but had sent a written report that the Clerk read out to the meeting, in summary the report stated that the statistics show that year on year crime is down by 21% but burglaries to dwellings have risen mainly in the part of the village to the east of the railway line. It was also stated that a new PCSO, Mags Taylor, had been appointed to the village, and in response to public concerns raised by the Parish Council, NO PARKING banners had been acquired to be displayed outside local schools.
In the main agenda of the meeting it was reported that at a recent meeting of the Standards Committee allegations of misconduct made by a former Parish Councillor against the Chairman of the Parish Council, Cllr. Terry Wilde, were found to be unfounded and subsequently dismissed.
The Parish Council noted that the works in creating the Miners Memorial Garden on land adja-cent to the Parish/Memorial Hall were now almost complete and would provide a fitting memori-al to all the miners and their families that worked at the colliery and created the community.
Friends of Brodsworth Way Despite the cold weather, our January meeting attracted 9 from the estate to discuss issues affecting us. Some of these issues were (a) performance of the Council during the severe weather, (b) lack of street sweeping, (c) potholes in the roads, (d) culvert inspections and (d) dog fouling on the football fields.
The subject of Neighbourhood Watch was discussed and I have carried out a survey on the resi-dents of Chatsworth Drive to find out if there is any interest in us having this scheme. 8 re-sponded positively out of a possible 24 households so I will be discussing this further with the Police. Hopefully there will be more interest if we can get this up and running. The next meeting of our FoBW group will be on Monday 14th March, 7pm in the Brodsworth Way pavilion. This is open to all our local residents and call me if you would like more infor-mation about our informal group.

Rossington Councillor's Update
I am hoping that I can settle down some of the rumours about a few things that are currently circulating the village:
The Welfare is not closing, however the Learning Centre has closed due to the loss of Gov-
ernment finance.
The Leisure centre is not closing, it will be part of the Dome Leisure Trust.
The Library is not closing, it will be moving to the Holmescarr Centre, however it will operate
differently.
The Opportunity Centre is not closing, it will stay open and share staff with the Library.
More good news is that the White Rose Way widening scheme, needed so that FARRRS can go ahead, is expected to start this year. This will lead on to the FARRRS scheme, hopefully, starting in 2012. The bid for the reduced scheme has gone to the Government and it is hoped that it will be approved. The private industry contribution has been agreed in principal.
The final children's play areas to be built, at the Welfare and Bankwood Crescent, are expected to be completed in the spring. That will mean that all our play areas will be either brand new or fully refurbished.
Our Neighbourhood team have built, with some financial help from the Parish Council, several new flowerbeds around Rossington that should look good when matured and brighten up the village. They have also put in several oak benches. Rossington in Bloom will also be supported.
The Brick Pond has been refurbished and is spectacular, with new disabled pitches in place and the whole area looks very smart. A new fishing club has been formed and they have obtained a grant for equipment from the Council. They will be holding a Fishing competition in March.
Kindest Regards - Richard Cooper-Holmes Your Labour Councillor

Since we opened our doors last April the Rossington Opportunity Centre has helped more than 500 Rossington people to look for either work or training or to start their own businesses. We offer a ‘one stop shop’ for local people to help with advice on find-ing you work, improving
your career prospects or supporting your own busi-ness start-up. We are based in the Holmescarr Com-munity Enterprise Centre on Grange Lane where we can also put you in touch with other agencies offering advice on a range of matters including personal fi-nance and benefits entitlement. Whether you are thinking of starting a new job, look-ing for a change of career or intending to pursue further training, the friendly and helpful staff at the Rossington Opportunity Centre is available to help.
Why not take the first step onto the career ladder and step into Rossington Opportunity Centre today?
The Opportunity centre is open Monday to Friday, 9am – 5pm. For further information please call 01302865644 or visit www.successdoncaster.co.uk

Letter I would like to thank everyone who voted for and supported me in my nine and a half years serving as a Parish Councillor.
I tried to honestly and conscientiously work for Rossington, but lack of conviction by some within the Parish Council over recent months has dented my enthusiasm. Recently the bias and intimidation by some Parish Council members over the Miners Wheel has finally caused my resignation.
I am not happy about nearly £4000 extra un-necessarily being spent on installing the Miners Wheel, just because of the personal feelings and agendas of a few. Only five out of eleven Councillors wanted the dearest quote of a non-Rossington business, but dearest quote was still carried out.
More needs to be spent around the village and for residents, not just The Memorial Hall and wages (Parish Councillors are unpaid ). I can-not agree with, and would rather not work with these attitudes.
Diane Field, Littleworth Lane, Rossington.
