CLUB HISTORYLike many local football clubs, the history of Rossington Main FC has been revised several times in recent years. Originally thought to have been formed in 1926, local knowledge has since revised this date to 1919 when ‘Rossington Colliery’ entered the Sheffield Association League, playing their fixtures on ground at the back of the Colliery offices. A club had competed under the Rossington Colliery name in 1917, but only since 1919 has the club been in continued existence.

The club moved to their current Oxford Street ground in 1921, and just a few years later enjoyed their best ever run in the FA Cup, reaching the 4th Qualifying Round in the 1924-25 season, where they were beaten 3-0 at Lincoln City. The club continued under the name Rossington Colliery for thirty years, enjoying its most successful season at the end of the Second World War when they did the ‘Doncaster Double’, winning both the Doncaster Senior League and Cup in 1944-45. Following the nationalisation of the mines in 1948, the club endured a change of name to Rossington Miners Welfare, and under this moniker they lifted the Doncaster Senior League Premier Division Cup in 1974.

In 1983, now known as Rossington Main, the club became founder members of the Central Midlands League, being promoted to the Premier Division as runners-up in their first season. The following year the club took the top flight by storm, winning the Premier Division title and completing the double with the Premier Division Cup. In 1991, following the erection of floodlights and a new Main Stand at Oxford Street which were christened with a friendly against Leeds United that attracted a crowd of around 1,200, the club made the step up to the Northern Counties East League and have remained in Division One ever since. In 1998, after lengthy negotiations, the club merged with near neighbours Rossington FC.

Formed as Station FC in the 1970s (initially changing in a small building at the pub of the same name for games on the adjacent Tornedale field) they had begun life in local Sunday football, but had progressed rapidly, relocating to Rossington Welfare and joining the Central Midlands League in 1986. Here they excelled early on, lifting nine awards in their first two seasons in the league including the Division One title in 1987-88.

Rossington FC continued to grow operating four teams; a Sunday side and an Under 18s team flanking their 1st and 2nd teams in the Central Midlands League. But, despite growth and development on the field the club

were unable to match the expectations of the Central Midlands League financially, and in 1998 they elected to leave the league; facilitating the merger.

Immediately after the merger Main ran both an over 35s and an under 18s team to much success. The over 35s made good progress in the Wragg Sheffield & Hallamshire League finishing Division 2A Champions in 2001 and Division 1A Runners-up the following year. Whilst the under 18s enjoyed continued success in the Doncaster & District Boys League. The club’s reserves, competing in the Doncaster & District League, have also enjoyed much success since the merger. They achieved a League and Cup Double in 2000, have reached the Cup final on three other occasions in the past decade, and finished as League runners-up just last season.

The early years of the 21st century weren’t as kind on the Rossington Main 1st team, but recently the club has enjoyed a revival of fortunes and reasserted itself at the heart of the community. In 2008 much work was done at Oxford Street to bring the club’s home back up to scratch, a job rewarded as the club hosted Doncaster Rovers,in a pre-season friendly.; the gate receipts from which enabled the club to regain a financially sound footing. Further ground improvements have followed each summer, as the club have looked to provide better facilities for players and supporters alike, most notable of which is the new clubhouse which has enabled the club to bring in much needed revenue. The pride in the club’s off the field set-up continued with the club’s programme picking up awards in both 2011 and 2012 whilst edited by Pete Murden.

Off field progress has been matched on the pitch too, with Main reaching the final of the Wilkinson Sword Trophy in 2011. And in 2011-12 the club enjoyed its best ever season in the Northern Counties East League, breaking club goalscoring and points records to finish seventh, despite losing 11 members of the 1st team squad along the way.

Rossington Main now operates two sides on a Saturday. The aims of the club are to provide a unified approach to football in the village so that there is a natural progression in the development of the game. The club strives to sustain competition at the highest possible and affordable level, to continue to provide excellent facilities for both players and spectators, to give opportunity for local players to progress, to reward loyalty and cater for the progression of football in the community of Rossington.

Good evening and welcome once again to Oxford Street for the first of two important Sheffield & Hallamshire Cup fixtures for the club this week.

Tonight it is the turn of the 1st team in the County FA’s Senior Challenge Cup and we offer a warm welcome to the committee, officials, players and spectators of Staveley Miners Welfare as they join us here at Oxford Street.

This is the first time we have met Staveley since their FA Vase heroics of a season ago when the club came within a match of a trip to Wembley Stadium when they lost to Dunston UTS in the semi-finals. Hillsborough may not have the appeal of Wembley (unless you’re a Wednesday fan obviously), but victory tonight will take either ourselves or Staveley to within one game of a trip to the county’s biggest football stadium.

Not that either side will need any extra incentive for silverware, with both sides looking for respite from league woes in the Cup; ourselves toiling away to keep our heads above the Division One relegation places, and Staveley currently struggling after a month of upheaval at the club.

As I said, this is the first of two big cup fixtures this week, as on Saturday the 2nd team take on Kirkburton in the County Association Cup semi-final, again here at Oxford Street. The 2nds have caused a couple of upsets already along the way and who knows what they can achieve with home advantage behind them. So please do get down on Saturday (2pm, free entry) and lend your support as you have done tonight.

On this day two years ago Main were continuing a remarkable second half of the season revival under Steve Lodge and Ian Wilson, with Hemsworththeir latest victims. Having lost just once in ten games coming into this match Rossington notched up a fourth successive win in front of a crowd of 62 here at Oxford Street.

Jake Vernon opened the scoring putting Main ahead on thirty-six minutes before soubling the advantage on the stroke of half-time. Five minutes after the restart an Ian Robinson goal threatened to make a game of it, but five minutes from time Jason Stokes struck the decisive third goal for Rossington.

2005 // NCEL DIVISION ONEROSSINGTON MAIN 3-3 LINCOLN MOORLANDS

Eight years ago today saw an eight goal thriller at Oxford Street as Lincoln Moorlands held the Colliery to a 3-3 draw. Remarkably this was Rossington’s second 3-3 draw in eight days as they’d been held by the same scoreline at Worsborough Bridge Athletic on the preceding Saturday, and the stalemates would continue

the following weekend too with a 2-2 draw at South Normanton Athletic. Of those results this one with Moorlands was arguably the most impressive as the Lincoln side were still in the hunt for promotion at this stage of the season, but would eventually finish fourth. Main on the other hand would end the season 13th.

CENTRAL MIDLANDS RESERVE DIVISION ONEROSSINGTON FC 11-1 LONG EATON UNITED1994 //

No game for the old Rossington FC 1st team nineteen years ago today, but the 2nd team more than made up for it with an 11-1 tonking of Long Eaton United’s reserves on the Welfare fields.

The Rossington side featured current Main manager Steve Lodge in goal and started as they intended to continue posting a 7-1 lead before the half-time whistle had sounded. In the second half the goalscoring pace

lessened a little, but it was still the biggest win of the season by some distance.

Leighton Lee struck five of the Main’s goals, with Michael Abonyi and John Griffiths each grabbing a brace. Neil Moran and Nigel Bray completed the scoring for Rossington, and no doubt Lodgey would have been very disappointed to concede the one!


TODAY’S VISITORS

Football has been played in Staveley for well over a hundred years, with a Staveley side beating Sheffield Wednesday 3-1 in the F.A Cup in 1883. In 1962 at nearby Barrow Hill a Sunday side was formed under the name Nag’s Head FC; they played friendlies for three years before being accepted into the Mansfield League. In 1968 they transferred to the Chesterfield League, and in 1989 a Saturday side was formed at the club’s current home of Inkersall Road with much success; finishing runners-up in the Chesterfield Amateur League, and winning the Byron Cup.

In 1991 the club moved up to the Sheffield County Senior League and won Division Three, then Division Two in consecutive seasons. Staveley by passed Division One and were welcomed into the Central Midlands League in 1993. They finished 4th, 12th, 5th and 3rd in the CML’s top flight and, after passing the necessary ground grading requirements, continued their rise up the pyramid with acceptance into the Northern Counties East League in 1997.

In their very first season in the NCEL they finished runners-up in Division One, and secured their place in the Premier Division for the following

A WARM WELCOME TO STAVELEY M.W.campaign. In 1998 the club also picked up their first piece of Northern Counties silverware, when winning the Wilkinson Sword Trophy, beating Harrogate Railway 8-3 on aggregate.

In 2000/01 Staveley MW suffered the first relegation in their short history after finishing bottom of the NCEL Premier and then following another disastrous season finished 2nd bottom of Division One in 2002, but survived in the League by re-election. In 2003, a terrible pre-Christmas run which brought just one win saw the club still finish bottom of Division One, but were again duly re-elected, and their escapism continued in 2004, when they avoided the relegation places in the final minute of the final game of the season.

After a succession of mid-table finishes the club suffered a set-back in May 2007 when the committee resigned en masse and Staveley MW came close to folding. The club were saved from extinction by current chairman Terry Damms and a host of helpers who manages to get the ground back up to NCEL standards ahead of the new campaign, and a youthful squad achieved a commendable 8th place finish.


STAVELEY M.W.top flight Staveley finished fifth, but the real highlights came in the FA Vase where, having reached the last 32 the previous season Staveley surpassed all expectations to reach the semi-finals. Having lost 1-0 at Northern League Dunston UTS in the first leg, the return fixture at Inkersall Road was drawn 2-2, Dunston’s winner six minutes from time ending Staveley’s dreams of Wembley.

The FA Vase run was hoped to be the precursor of bigger things, with the club targeting promotion and further ground developments in the coming seasons, but just last month club sponsor Baris were forced to withdraw their backing and manager Billy Fox and a large number of the 1st team squad have since moved on meaning that Staveley will instead be targeting staying in the Premier Division on restricted means for the coming season rather than pushing on for further glory.

In the 2008-09 season an incredible 23 game unbeaten towards the season’s end propelled the club to a fourth place finish in Division One and also helped secure the Wilkinson Sword Trophy for a second time. The club also added a reserve side who finished second in the Central Midlands Reserve League, whilst the under 19s secured promotion to their top-flight. In 2009-10 the club matched their previous season’s achievements, now under the stewardship of Billy Fox they again came fourth and lifted the Wilkinson Sword Trophy for a third time.

In 2010-11 Staveley secured the Division One title, thanks in no small part to NCEL Top-scoreer Ryan Damms who netted 38 times, to earn promotion back up to the NCEL Premier; and the silverware didn’t end there with the reserves lifting the Central Midlands Reserve League title. In their first season back in the

For the visit of high-flying Cleethorpes manager Steve Lodge kept faith with most of the side that had gained a result at Grimsby Borough the previous week. Liam Copley returned in goal with young Wildey away and Ben Clark replaced Rhys Brailey on the bench.

On a glorious afternoon for football early exchanges were fairly even but the quick long ball was catching our defence out in our eagerness to get forward, and it was no surprise that this was how Cleethorpes took an early lead; the visiting forward getting clear to lob the on-rushing Copley from the corner of the 18-yard box. We pressed forward in search of an equaliser as had been the case the previous week, but often left ourselves exposed and we were fortunate that we did not find ourselves further behind. Without really testing the visitor’s keeper we actually scored from a quickly-taken corner midway through the half; Nathan Fraser’s kick met by Dean Thornton’s clever run and flick at the near post to be knocked over the line by Brandon Fallon with the Cleethorpes defence almost static.

Copley saved well from a Cleethorpes header and Billam forced his counterpart into action with a shot from distance, but we went further behind before the break when a shot from the left hit the foot of the post, rebounded across the goal-line and was tapped in at the other post by the on-rushing Mascall to record his second

goal of the game. Although we had not been at our best we were still in with a shout at the interval, Cleethorpes had threatened going forward but their defence looked vulnerable under pressure.

Quite how the second half remained goalless surprises me as both sides went in search of the vital goal that might determine the final outcome. Copley had to make many timely saves and interceptions on the edge of his box, and the visiting keeper was in the right place as close range headers from both Holvey and Thornton were held right on the goal-line. A Cleethorpes free-kick shaved our post and Fallon’s effort under pressure from two defenders beat the keeper but had the same outcome at the other end.

In the dying minutes under intense pressure the visitors’ defence was visibly panicking, and following the award of a free-kick the Cleethorpes No.11 was dismissed for verbal abuse aimed at the linesman. Sadly there was little time remaining to cash in on our numerical advantage, and the game ended with all players bar Copley in the Cleethorpes half. Perhaps we deserved a point for our late pressure but Cleethorpes should have had the game won before that.

Tonight’s opponents Staveley Miners Welfare have recently appointed a new manager, with Neil Cluxton stepping into the hot seat. Cluxton replaces Billy Fox who ended his very successful spell at Inkersall Road earlier this month to concentrate on work and business commitments.

The club have been in a period of upheaval of late with an end to a sponsorship agreement with Baris, seeing finances tapered and as a result over fifteen players have left the club in the past month.

A club statement, published on the Staveley Miners Welfare website read; “First team coach James Earl offered his services and full blown commitment as usual but the club felt it would in the short term be better for Neil and his reserves/under 19 management team to see the season out.

“A huge thank you to James for his great input and good luck to Neil and his team as we see how the young lads may now cope. It will, as usual, be an attempt to play football as we see it in the right way whatever team we put out.”

CLUXTON TAKES CHARGE AT STAVELELY

It’s been a good week for local football in Doncaster with the Rovers maintaining their place at the top of League One, but there has also been a great boost for the women’s game too in the past few days.

It was announced at the FA headquarters last week that the 2013 FA Women’s Cup Final will be held at Doncaster’s Keepmoat Stadium on Sunday 26th May . The news is a great boost to both the town and to women’s football in the borough ahead of the Doncaster Rovers’ Belles third season in the FA Women’s Super League. The final will also return to terrestrial television too with BBC winning the rights to broadcast the final to the watching public.

This year marks twenty years since the FA took over the running of the women’s game and also twenty seasons since the Belles themselves last lifted the trophy, defeating Knowlsey United at Scunthorpe in 1994.

The announcement that the final will be played at their home ground will give added incentive to the Belles who kick-off their season with a fifth round FA Cup tie at home to Bristol Academy on Sunday 17th March.

If the Belles are to recreate the spirit of 1994 and Gillian Coluthard, Karen Walker et al then they may have to hope for a favourable draw that keeps them apart from Arsenal, who have won five of the last seven FA Cups.

fanzine popular STAND, John Coyle looks back at another County Cup.I started supporting Doncaster Rovers in the autumn of 1969, not long after we won the Division Four Championship under Lawrie McMenemy. The years that followed were hardly trophy-laden and for a long time I had to admit that Rovers had lifted only one cup during my tenure as a fan. That came on 7th May 1976, when Rovers beat Sheffield United 2-1 at Bramall Lane to win the County Cup. That trophy, not to be confused with the Senior Challenge Cup for which Rovers competed in during their Conference years (and won it twice), is now a relic of a bygone era, but it provided some memorable local derbies in an era where the football calendar seemed at least to be less crowded than it is today.

The Sheffield & Hallamshire Football Association County Cup, to give it its full title, was conceived at a meeting of the S&H FA in August 1920. It followed the example of similar competitions being run in Lancashire and the West Riding in which the ‘senior clubs’ from the county were invited to play. By ‘senior clubs’ they meant those in the Football League - Sheffield United, Wednesday, Barnsley and one of the Football League’s recent additions, Rotherham County. The aim was to raise funds for the Association. Four teams meant two semi-finals and a final, the original plan being that the games be played in May, at the end of the regular football season. In May 1921, having squeezed past Barnsley in

a replayed semi-final, Sheffield United beat their neighbours at Hillsborough in front of 20,000 people to become the first winners of the County Cup. The competition was all completed within a week, and the County FA must have thought they were onto a winner. In 1923, the Sheffield FA’s ‘senior clubs’ increased to five when Rovers were elected to Division Three North of the Football League. However, the newcomers were not invited to participate in the County Cup and when they applied to join the party in 1925 they were rebuffed. A year later Rovers were accepted, but they were forced to play a preliminary round against Rotherham (now United) who must have been equally delighted by their treatment! The Rovers’ first County Cup game took place at Millmoor on 27th September 1926 and although Tom Keetley put the visitors in front they ended up losing by the odd goal in three. Rovers had little joy in these early years, and when Rotherham were excluded in 1930-31 due to an administrative error, Rovers were seen off at Oakwell in the semi-final.

By 1932 the County FA decided that the competition needed shaking up, as attendances were falling, especially for games that did not pit the two Sheffield sides together. It was resolved that Wednesday and United alone would compete for the County Cup, with the other clubs relegated to an Invitation

Cup. Rovers and Barnsley were “invited” and after a 2-2 draw at Belle Vue, Barnsley won the replay at Oakwell to be the only winners of the Invitation Cup. The 1932-33 “final” at Bramall Lane, won by United, had drawn a disappointing crowd, so the Sheffield FA reverted to a five-team format and now adopted an open draw for the preliminary round.

The new format suited Rovers and in 1934 they reached the final for the first time, losing 3-0 to Wednesday at Hillsborough after a thrilling replay victory over Sheffield United. The crowd of 4,832 that saw goals by Ronnie Dodd and Stan Burton give Rovers a 2-1 extra time win over the Blades was higher than that for the final. Two years later Rovers won the Cup for the first time. Having beaten Barnsley 3-0 in the semi-final at Belle Vue in November 1935, they won the final at the same venue in May 1936, overcoming Sheffield United 2-1 with both goals coming from Reg Baines. In May 1938 Rovers won the cup for the second time, Mick Killouhry’s goal being enough to overcome Barnsley at Belle Vue.

The County Cup enjoyed something of a revival during and after World War Two. During the latter it was played over two legs, games sometimes doubling up as Regional League fixtures. Rovers won the Cup in 1940-41, beating Rotherham 3-2. The post-war boom saw the County Cup’s largest attendance, 49,980 witnessing an all-Sheffield semi final in 1948-49.

However, attendances soon tailed away again. When Rovers won the Cup for the fourth time in May 1956, only 3.048 saw them spank Sheffield United 4-0 in the Final at Belle Vue (Ronnie Walker (2), Johnny Mooney and Alick Jeffrey were the scorers). Falling gates and other football competitions (from 1960 the Football League Cup was introduced) meant that for three seasons the Cup was not contested and from 1963 Sheffield Wednesday agreed to pay an annual fee to the S&H FA rather than competing in the Cup.

The competition was clearly in decline, but it still had its moments. Not least in 1965 when in a replayed semi-final at Belle Vue Rovers were trailing 0-2 to Rotherham with a few minutes left. Keith Ripley, normally a defender, was sent forward and scored twice to send the game into extra time. He then completed a hat-trick from the penalty spot to win the tie. Over 11,000 turned up a week later for the final, but Rovers lost 0-4 to Sheffield United. In the 1967-68 competition Rovers reached the final which was held over until the following season and in October 1968 Roger Barrett’s goal gave them a 1-0 win over Barnsley. Rovers’ skipper Stuart Robertson was handed a Cup, but it was the Senior Challenge Cup as the County Cup had gone missing! It was eventually found but Rovers were not to receive it again until May 1976 when two goals from Peter Kitchen secured victory over a Sheffield United side just relegated from the First Division.

The County Cup continued to be played until the early 1990s, although increasingly teams chose to pay a fee to the Association rather than participate. For 1985-86 Rovers and Rotherham elected to play rather than pay and the “Final” was played as a curtain-raiser to the following season, Rovers winning 1-0 via a Neil Woods goal. That was Rovers last success in the competition, though they did have the honour of participating in the last-ever final at Oakwell in May 1993. Despite a spirited showing, Rovers lost 3-2 to their higher-division opponents, meaning that Barnsley remain “holders” of the County Cup.

While it is unlikely that the County Cup will ever be revived in its old form, such is the proliferation of other competitions, it is worth noting that in

the pre-season period this year Rovers met Barnsley, Sheffield Wednesday and Rotherham. With a little co-ordination it might be possible to set up a pre-season “mini-league” involving all five local Football League clubs and reintroduce the Cup. It might give the pre-season game the edge they sometimes lack and increase public interest. For the record, Rovers won the County Cup seven times, including the wartime win in 1940-41, some way behind Sheffield United’s 21 triumphs. It would be nice to be given another chance to catch the Blades up - assuming the County FA can find the trophy, that is.

FOOTBALL’S FAULTS CONTINUING MAIN ISSUE’S LOOK AT FOOTBALL’S UGLY SIDE

NO. 12. IDENTI-KIT MODERN FOOTBALL STADIAI have long come to accept that modern football is not for the likes of me, something you’ll have no doubt gleaned if you’ve been reading this feature throughout the season. I don’t go in for the hype you see, I don’t view Sunday clashes between Stoke and Sunderland as being all that ‘Super’, I don’t understand the idea of football clubs as businesses, and I couldn’t care a jot what Harry Redknapp thinks about anything.

I’ve tried to examine and determine the route of this disdain for the game at its top level, and aside from the obvious – money, hyperbole, Alan Shearer’s analysis – I think it may be down to the arenas in which it is increasingly played. And that is the increasing similarity of each and every new stadium that is built. Another corporate concrete bowl, more corrugated sheeting, waves of more plastic seating, the only differential between one and the other being the colour of the seats and the sponsors name picked out within them. Each of them built further and further from town and city centres, designed for access for the car drivers in a world where increasingly more of us cannot afford to drive.

The fact is that if I plonked you down now in a grey concourse between a food concession stall and a queue for a toilet you would have no way of knowing

whether you were in the Ricoh Stadium or Pride Park, Keepmoat Stadium or St Marys. I think this is what puts me off, the fact that I won’t be seeing anything I haven’t seen before.

In the non-league game though there remains quirks a plenty, with grounds built and developed over decades through grants, unexpected windfalls and more often than not volunteers; grounds that have evolved naturally rather than been copied and pasted from lego plans. It is at these grounds you get gems like Teversal’s Trolley Park terrace, our own Allotment End stand, the high hill of Worsborough Bridge Athletic and the sloping sides and dry-stone walls of Hallam. Give me Oxford Street over Oxford United’s Kassam Stadium any time.

Of course not all new stadia are formulaic, some have retained an element of individuality; Huddersfield’s arced ground (whatever it is called now), Brighton’s fantastic Falmer Stadium, or Dartford’s unique eco-friendly stadium. All new grounds with that key, too often, missing ingredient; character. Of course it’s unlikely that any new ground will incorporate the oddities like Worcester City’s ‘changing cottage’ or The Dell’s diagonal end stands into their plans, but at least, to keep us on our toes, stray from the blueprint once in a while.

MEET THE MAIN MENSteve Lodge (Manager)Steve took over the reigns for the end of the 2010/11 season, leading the club to the Wilkinson Sword Trophy. Last season, Steve’s first full season in charge, was also successful as the first team broke a number of club records to achieve their best NCEL finish. A firm believer in club spirit, which is why most players and officials at the club are local.

Ian Wilson (Assistant Manager)A former Wales youth and amateur international Ian also does an excellent job as club groundsman amongst other roles. Previously in charge of Rossington FC, he took that club from local Sunday football to the top flight of the Central Midlands League

Lee ApplebyNow in his 7th season at the Main, making him one of the top appearance makers in recent years Lee was instrumental in our record breaking season last year with some outstanding performances and 12 clean sheets. Dedicated, honest and hardworking as well as agile, quick and boasting superb handling Lee is one of the best keepers the NCEL has to offer.

Jordan WildeyYoung Jordan will provide competition for the number one shirt this year after some impressive displays in tough games for both 1st and 2nd teams last season where he performed maturely and competently. He is a fantastic shot stopper, agile and very confident.

Bradley BillamFlying full back Brad continues to grow at left back; combining athleticism, confidence and consistency with a willingness to work forwards and backwards to become a valuable member of the Main squad. His attacking prowess was clear to see last year as he was credited with 8 assists.

Dan ElcoatPrimarily a central defender, Dan can play anywhere across the back four and also in

central midfield. He is strong in the air and tenacious in the tackle, boasting good communication skills and a strong desire to play.

Chris HansonChris joined the Main late last season from Yorkshire Main, playing a versatile role in the Rossington defence. Chris is calm in possession and is a good reader of the game.

Tom HarteVery good on the ball and well organised Tom came back to football last year after some time away from the game. He played with the Reserves last season but has shown during pre-season that he is capable of becoming a 1st team player.

David Holvey2011/12 Manager’s Player of the Year; Club Captain Dave lead by example last year and his never say die attitude and loyalty to the club make him an invaluable asset. A great leader and robust defender Dave is also capable of pin-point long range passes that turn defence quickly into attack.

Dean JonesDean can play in any position across the back four, as he has done for the Reserves. Another player to return to the game after some time away, Dean is a good footballer and very good in the air.

Will Rowley2011/12 Reserves Players’ Player of the Year. Long-time Main man Will is an old school central defender who provided some excellent displays last season. Solid in the air, well-timed in the tackle and a threat at set pieces he is reliable and extremely valuable for both sides.

Richard SpearsVery hard working, committed and energetic, Richard played an important role in the club’s strong 2011/12 campaign. Richard will no doubt look to continue working hard to cement his place in the team.

Q1. When was your debut for Rossington Main & who was it against?A1. I was 15 when I made my reserves debut at Mexbrough. My first team game came when I was 16 (August 2005) in the FA Cup, at home against Washington Nissan where we lost 2-1. Richard Sennett was in charge, he saw me training with the Over 35 team and asked me if I would be interested in playing in the FA Cup…and I jumped at the chance, of course! Q2. First footballing memory?A2. My first training session with my junior side at 9 years old.

Q3. First team you played for?A3. Rossington Juniors FC, loved every minute of it!

Q4. Which team do you support?A4. Although I’m not a die hard, I do follow Sunderland. I’ve never really had a club, just a general football fan I suppose.

Q5. Which footballer was your boyhood hero?A5. Zinedine Zidane. I loved watching him play, the man was a genius.

Q6. Who do you consider the greatest player in your position? A6. I would have to say Gary Neville. A very good right back and a fantastic attitude, the man was a winner!

Q7. What was the first professional game you ever went to watch?A7. I went to watch Sheffield Wednesday play Man United at Hillsbrough, I think it was 1995, about 7 years old.

Q8. If you could travel in time to attend any match ever which would you choose?A8. It would have to be the 1966 World Cup Final! The biggest game in English football history!

Q9. What is your favourite ever football kit? A9. My brother had an away Newcastle shirt. It was purple and dark blue hoops with a cream round neck collar! Cream shorts and blue and purple hooped sock. Very smart.

Q11. Favourite ground you have ever played at (apart from Oxford Street obviously)?A11. I played at Glandford Park when I was at Scunthorpe as an under 16, had a nightmare. My favourite NCEL ground would be Winterton, I like the surface there.

Q13. What is your most prized footballing possession?A13. I have the match programme from the last game to be played at the Old Wembley! It was a fantastic occasion, despite the result

Q14. What is your proudest achievement in football so far?A14. Serving as the Main’s Assistant Manager last season alongside my Dad. We had the most successful season in the Main’s NCEL history. I would love to go back into the coaching and management side of the game when my playing time comes to an end… again.

Q15. Sum what Rossington Main means to you in 5 words or less. A15. Proud to be a Blue

Q15. What has been your favorite moment whilst with Rossington Main? A15. Watching the lads reach the Wilkinson Sword Trophy final after an amazing game at Louth. I wasn’t involved because of injury but was there watching. A brilliant night.

Q17. Who is the best player you have ever played alongside?A17. Tough question….I am going to have to say my brother Matt. I have played with some very good players, but I am very proud of his achievements.

Q18. Who is the best player you have ever played against? A18. An ageing Chris Waddle once sat me on my backside without even touching the ball. He was playing for Staveley. He barely moved but he was class! He ran the game from the left wing, I struggled big time! I was about 17 years old, great education! Q19. Lastly, which other players would make up your dream 5-a-side team?A19. Moore, Pele, Maradona, Zidane (don’t need a keeper with that side!)

MEET THE MAIN MENShaun PendletonShaun played the majority of last season at centre back before moving into central midfield where he put in some great displays. Versatile and very professional in his approach, Shaun is a hard worker. His defensive attributes are as impressive as his offensive ones. A very strong passer of the ball, he can play a vital role in playmaking from deeper positions.

John TunneyJohn joins the club from Yorkshire Main after several very successful seasons there. A versatile player who is equally capable of playing anywhere in defence or midfield.

Marcel ChipamungaYoung local lad Marcel is making his first steps into senior football this season, hoping to gain experience and develop as a player. Marcel has already shown the management team that he has bags of potential and willingness to learn.

Ben ClarkYoung and enthusiastic with a good attitude to learning the game. wide man Ben is also making his first step into senior football. He is full of pace and positive running which will no doubt cause a problem for defenders.

Niall DoyleAs the Reserve team captain Niall has become an important part of the club, helping the Reserves to a close title race last season. Niall likes to keep the ball moving and push forward into goal scoring positions whenever possible.

Nathan FraserAnother very versatile player who is naturally gifted, Nathan loves to attack and run at players and his creativity could prove important . Nathan’s ability to play out wide, down the middle, up front and even at the back makes him a key squad member.

Jonathan MirfinMain’s 2011/12 Supporters’ Player of the Year. Jonathan continues to impress at the Main with consistent displays in the centre of

midfield. Jonathan rarely gives the ball away, starting attacks and creating chances for his team mates. The controlled midfielder is also useful from free-kicks.

Danny TaylorDanny joins the club from Askern this season and can play across the midfield and at full back, is very confident in possession and looks after the ball well.

Brandon FallonBrandon burst into the Main squad in March. Tall, powerful and very quick and for such a young lad he fits in very well at this level. After only seven appearances last season, we are waiting to see even more of Brandon this year.

Tom McLaughlinPace, dribbling and finishing are just three attributes that make Tom a very dangerous opponent for defenders. He can play up front or on either wing. Tom joins after several seasons with Askern Villa and will be looking to cement a starting role at the Main this term.

Scott MaughanThe club’s overall top scorer last season.as he make his return to football after some time away from the game. It proved very successful as he fired the Reserves into a title chasing spot. Scott is a natural finisher who comes alive around the penalty area.

Dean ThorntonA former regular scorer for the Reserves, Dean has returned to force his way into the 1st team. Dean is excellent with his back to goal and good in the air, but equally as effective running past the back four. A natural finisher and confident in front of goal.

Adam WisdomAdam is blessed with pace and power and his physical attributes and appetite to work make him a handful for opponents. A threat running beyond defenders, but really comes alive from close range, where he scored all of his goals last season.


STARTING ELEVENTHIS ISSUE’S XI... THINGS MODERN STADIA LACK

Proper FloodlightsProper lights on proper metal structures in the proper corners of proper grounds. Not simply a traditional aesthetic, but also more often than not how you would find the ground too.

TerracingOften lamented, but amongst the arguments for terracing’s return they always seem to overlook the obvious one; not ‘atmosphere’, not ‘cost’, but the fact you can easily move away from the annoying pillock next to you.

PillarsNever great when they obstruct your view, but you’re hard-pressed to beat the hilarity of seeing a mate get lumbered with a seat bang behind one.

A Sensible LocationThere was a time when football grounds existed in the communities to which their team belonged, surrounded by the houses of those who supported them. Now each new ground is plonked in an industrial estate in the middle of nowhere.

CottagesFulham maybe the obvious one, but they weren’t the only club to have a semi-detached house in the corner of their ground housing their changing rooms, the practice is also used at Worcester City, the referee escorting out the teams from their respective front doors.

Foreboding EndsNothing daunts an away side like having to play towards a menacing enclosure; the Cold Blow Lane end at The Den, the Cemetery End at Bury’s Gigg Lane. For

some reason the Findus Family Stand doesn’t instil the same fear… unless you’re allergic to horsemeat I suppose.

Less Corporate SeatingHard to word, but it’s not that long since the fancy dans and the bid wigs had to endure the same weather as us commoners, sat in a small walled off portion of seating straddling the halfway line. Now they get glass boxes and canapés. Hardly football.

Away Fans Getting WetYou’re playing awful, you’re getting tonked at home, but it doesn’t matter, because you can at least enjoy the schandenfreude of seeing the away fans get a soaking on the uncovered terrace.

Snack Bars With a ViewConcourses never used to exist at football grounds, just airports, and so snack bars sat on the terraces meaning that anyone queuing at them would be able to do so without missing any of the action on the field. Plus there was the added bonus of the potential for a hoofed clearance to go flying in over the fried onions.

Anecdotal ToiletsEveryone has a story of the open trough at Rotherham, he brick wall with a pipe at York, plus the portacabin at Doncaster, the middle urinal of which actually offered the best view from the Pop Side.

CharacterI suppose all of the above adds up to this; an air of individuality amongst stadia that meant when they appeared on television you could identify instantly which ground it was.
