How much is your Pension really worth?

I received an email this week advising of a new scam. Particularly likely in the countryside a child’s seat is being left on the side of the road with a blanket across it, giving the impression a child may have been abandoned.

However, if you get out to help apparently you will become the target of crime and be dragged into the nearby hedge and robbed! Whilst I would like to think this would never happen, the cynic inside me wants to share this with you and make sure you stay safe, and alert. And if you’ve ever watched Crime Watch I don’t think you’d dismiss anything.

What kind of world do we live in? It will come to the point soon where we will be too afraid to stop and help anyone for fear of our own safety. At a time when the news is full of Jimmy Savile and Lance Armstrong , I find it difficult to console myself that this kind of thing is the minority.

I’m sorry to be doom and gloom at a time when we should be gearing up for Christmas and getting out our festive spirit for another year, but I do really wonder whatever’s next. It must be particularly difficult for those

more senior members of the community that were brought up in very different times.

I remember the stories from my grandparents how they always left doors open and children played out in the street unsupervised. Bring back those days!

And only 2 more pay days until Christmas, I can’t believe it’s come round so quick again! How are all your preparations coming along? Non- existent if you’re like me. Mind you I appreciate not many of us are flush with cash what with the price of fuel and utilities.

So whilst you’re thinking about present buying, organising Christmas parties, family meals and get togethers please consciously try and use our local independent businesses and retailers where possible. In this economic climate they are the ones that deserve, need and value your business, so please bear this in mind before you shop, and do your bit to support the local economy.

All the best, Jill

Dragonsong is a new, glee-style youth choir for 13-18 year olds from across the county of Wrexham. The choir is currently working towards a concert on the 11th December in Central Station, the rehearsal venue, where they will perform a range of modern songs in choral arrangements. The choir is led by their Musical Director, Charlotte Jones. In only two rehearsals, the choir have already started practising songs such as Price Tag by Jessie J, Someone Like You by Adele and Wings by Little Mix, with Charlotte’s choral arrangements often splitting into three-part harmony. Rehearsals are fun and easy going, and there’s no need to panic - solos are only given to those who volunteer! In addition, there is no painstaking audition process to join Dragonsong, it is open to anyone who loves singing and wants to join. It provides a fantastic opportunity not only to develop your singing but to socialise and engage with a new hobby in a relaxed environment. Andrew Fergus, the founder of Dragonsong, is keen to regenerate youth choirs by moving away from the common misconception that choir music must stick rigidly to its roots.

Working with modern songs allows young people to engage more passionately with the arrangements, undoubtedly a key element in what makes Dragonsong so innovative. Tom James, Wrexham’s gold medallist rower, had been named patron of the choir and is keen to be involved in a Wrexham-based project. He believes Dragonsong will be highly successful in getting the younger generation involved in something “new and rewarding”.Dragonsong rehearsals are held every Tuesday at Central Station in Wrexham, from 6.30-8.00pm.www.dragonsong.org.uk

ENJOY A UNFORGETTABLE FAMILY DAY OUT ON A VINTAGE ROUTEMASTER BUS

Pick up and drop off in

Rossett & Gresford

Bird flocks are a feature of winter. The vast assemblies of Starlings containing thousands of birds are mainly migrants from eastern Europe. Smaller gatherings may be made up of family groups like the 40 odd Long-tailed Tits seen with Siskins and Goldfinches feeding in alders by Rossett weir. Kingfishers returned after workmen left the reconstructed fish pass. Gull numbers (mostly Lesser Black-backs) build up on Gresford Flash and down the road in Darland 80+ Pied Wagtails have been feeding on a waterlogged field. These birds probably roost nearby. There is another Wagtail roost in the Maelor Hospital. The hospital recently hosted a Dipper spotted on a stream running through the grounds by a friend visiting his wife in the labour ward. (Mother and baby are both doing well). Flocking helps birds share information about food sources and provides a measure of protection from predators. The more pairs of eyes the better for spotting impending danger. Once aware of a potential killer small birds can effectively thwart an aggressor by taking to the skies and whirling en masse. Hundreds of small birds scattering

in a disorganised flying rabble confuse a hawk or falcon by making it impossible to concentrate on a particular target. If this does not work their Plan B is mobbing.

Among our local birds of prey are Wrexham’s iconic urban Peregrines. They are regularly seen over Gresford Flash. Earlier in the year a youngster begging for food from a tree top was an unexpected addition to our back garden list. Buzzards are now our most widespread hawks, currently outnumbering Kestrels, with Sparrowhawks the most likely to be seen in gardens. The speed and agility of a hunting Sparrowhawk is breathtaking. Females are bigger than males and capable of catching and lifting prey larger and heavier than themselves.

The female Sparrowhawk pictured subsequently took to the air carrying the Woodpigeon in its talons. To squeamish readers I apologise but these things happen in the natural world and for a bird photographer obtaining such a shot, gruesome as it may be, is a once in a lifetime opportunity.

The September figures for inflation as measured by the Consumer Prices Index (CPI) are important for all state benefits as it determines how much pensions and other benefits are to increase in the following tax year. The September figures have just been revealed as we go to press which show that in the twelve months to September 2012 prices increased by 2.2%. (ONS 16/10/2012) State pension rates will increase by 2.5% as the Government has agreed a minimum increase of this amount going forward.

Inflation seems higher than 2.2% especially with energy companies having recently announced increases substantially above this figure and with savings interest rates seeming to be going in the opposite direction it is important that investors look for the best returns for their capital. Currently the best instant access rate is 2.85% (Moneysupermarket.com) which net of basic rate tax is only 2.28%, hardly making any real return above inflation.

The alternative option of investing in the stock market is regarded as too risky by some, particularly in the volatile period we have had over the last few years but for people who are prepared to invest their capital for the longer term there are means of managing this risk.

Most succesful investment strategies usually involve spreading capital between four assets - cash, shares and property- with the allocation of capital to each asset depending on the amount of risk an investor is prepared to take and if they want income, growth or a combination of the two.

No-one can predict which investment is going to produce the best returns year after year, but there are two things we can be fairly sure of; the best performing investment in one year can often turn out to be the worst performing investment the next year and, by spreading your money you stand a better chance of achieving more consistent returns. In 2008 UK equities (as measured by the FTSE All share index) lost 30% over the year, yet in 2009 investor confidence grew and shares improved by over 30% over the year. Rebalancing a portfolio to take advantage of this volatility is a vital part of the ongoing risk management to ensure that too much money is not allocated to the wrong asset at any one time.

Investors who are prepared to commit for the longer term are likely to be well rewarded in terms of their income and capital if they adopt this strategy.

Cider roast turkey

Jones Brothers Farm Shop, Stansty Lodge, Mold Road, Wrexham LL11 4YF

www.jonesfarmshop.co.uk • 01978 359 001

FOR THE TURKEY 4.5-6kg/10-13lb turkey (giblets removed and kept)450g stuffing 2 leeks, trimmed and halved 2 carrots, halved 50g butter, softened 300ml dry cider FOR THE GRAVY300ml dry cider 600ml chicken stock 2 tbsp quince or redcurrant jelly

Heat oven to 190C/fan 170C/gas 5. Wash and dry the turkey, removing any feathers. Pull out the giblets and the neck, then set aside. Lift up the skin that covers the neck opening, then stuff the stuffing up and under the skin, securing it tightly underneath with a skewer or two cocktail sticks. Weigh the stuffed turkey, then calculate the cooking time, allowing 40 mins per kg (20 mins per lb).

Put the leeks and carrots along the bottom of a roasting tin in a single layer - this will make a trivet for the turkey to sit on and add flavour to the gravy. Add the neck to the tin. Sit the turkey on top and coat the breast all over with butter. Pour in the cider, cover with foil, then roast according to your timings. Keep checking the tin - if the vegetables look like they’re burning, add a splash of water or cider. At 30 mins before the end of cooking, remove the foil and season generously. To test that the turkey is ready,

Recipe of the month

pierce the thigh through its thickest part; the juices should run clear. Take the turkey out and leave to rest, covered with a clean tea towel. Can leave to rest for up to 1 hr. Now make the gravy. Drain the fat and juices from the tin into a jug, discarding the veg and the neck. Place the tin over a flame, then pour in the cider, scraping up the flavour-filled crusty bits with a wooden spoon. Reduce the cider by half, then strain into a saucepan (this will save you hob space later).

As temperatures are set to drop in Wrexham and the county prepares for wind, rain and snow the message from WCBC this winter is: KEEP WARM, KEEP WELL.

WHAT ARE THE RISKS? We all know just how important it is to keep warm in winter. Keeping warm can help you stay healthy and safe and can help prevent serious health problems like pneumonia. There are some simple things you can do to keep yourself and your home warm this winter.EAT WELL Eating regular meals will help keep your energy levels up when it is cold STAY ACTIVE Exercise can help to keep you warm. Try to move around at least once an hour.WEAR WARM CLOTHES Wear plenty of thin layers. Put on a hat, scarf, coat and gloves when you go outside. Wear clothes made of wool, cotton or fleecy material. Wear thermal underwear and bed socks at night.HEAT YOUR HOMEIn the day time heat your main living room to around 18- 21°C and the rest of your house to at least 16°C

Try to keep the temperature above 18°C in your bedroom overnight. Set the heating to come on earlier, rather than turn the thermostat up, so you won’t be cold while you wait for your home to heat up. Dear residents,Here we are again - November! Where has the summer gone? As I’m sure you are aware, this is one of the busiest times of year for us, with Halloween, Bonfire Night and the run up to Christmas and New Year. By the time you receive this edition, Halloween and Bonfire night will have passed, so I do hope this has run its course without any problems for you all.I would like to mention to you that PCSO Kelly Ellis has moved onto a new position within North Wales Police and no longer works in the ward area of Rossett. Please can I say a big ‘thank you’ to Kelly for all her hard work in the community and wish her well in her new post. The new PCSO for Rosset is currently PCSO Luke Dobby, who I’m sure you will see and get to know in the near future. As mentioned earlier, Christmas will soon be upon us so please may I take this opportunity to provide (below) a few simple steps in order for us all to be safe this Christmas and New Year.

Remember, if you need to contact North Wales Police, please do so on numbers 101 for non-emergency and 999 for any emergency.

A FEW FESTIVE TIPS!Personal Safety: • Only carry small amounts of cash. • Always make sure your purse/wallet is in a secure place.

• A lot of people will be attending Christmas parties or just going out to celebrate this festive season. Always remember to let people know where you are going and what time to expect you back.

Home Security:• Make sure all doors and windows are

locked when you are not home. This also includes garages and sheds.

• Use timer switches to turn your lights on when you are not home, especially during these dark nights.

20

• Professional steam cleaning of freezers and fridges • Intensive cleaning and sanitising of washing machines,

dishwashers and tumble dryers • Microwave oven cleaning and sanitising

• Commercial ranges, salamanders and extraction hoods• Commercial contract work undertaken for pubs, schools,

nurseries, play barns, colleges and letting agents• Set prices including bulbs and filters

POST BOX I have received an assurance from the Post Office that the replacement for the stolen box on Croeshowell Lane will be in place by the beginning of December. The delay in replacing it is as a result of a large demand due to the number of thefts across the Country.

FLOODING ISSUES I have persuaded the Head of Environment to carry out works to the brook that runs alongside Greenfields. The legal department were holding the work up due to land ownership issues. However, common sense has prevailed and the work will be done. This should alleviate many of the flooding problems in Greenfields and Croeshowell Lane.

TRAVELLERS I For 10 days a Traveller family from Daisy Lane camped out in various parts of the village. They were demanding a council house in Rossett. During this period they twice occupied the church car park, camped out in the grounds of Darland

School and on Network Rail land on Station Road. I held daily meetings with senior council officers, lawyers and police officers. We had to operate at all times within the

constraints of the law and their irresponsible behaviour

wasted many hours of our time during that period. We

now have a position

whereby if they return to Rossett they will be served with a notice that will ban them from the village for three months. It has also been made clear to them that they will not be offered a house in Rossett. The illegal site which they formally occupied is now in the process of being returned to agricultural land.DARLAND SCHOOL Congratulations are due to the head, staff and governors for the way in which the school has been turned around in the past two years. This autumn it was the only school in the County Borough that was oversubscribed for its intake. This is a tremendous achievement for all concerned.

PCSO We are saying farewell to Kelly Ellis who has been our PCSO for the past three years. She is moving to the Wrexham Industrial Estate and we say “Thank You” to her for the work that she has done in recent years. We are currently sharing PCSO Luke Dobby with Holt and will have our own dedicated PCSO by the end of the year.

HEDGES During September and October I arranged for a significant number of overgrown hedgerows to be cut back. This is an annual problem and we need the co-operation of owners who have hedges that are alongside pavements. It is unacceptable for parents with prams, wheelchair users and the disabled to be forced to walk in the road.

As always I can be contacted on 01244 571747 or [email protected].

Road RepairsCan I congratulate a determined group of residents, past and present, whose lobbying has finally paid dividends in the long awaited re-surfacing of Winchester Way? (You know who you are!). Having fought hard for these road repairs prior to 2008, Winchester Way along with Annfield and Old Wrexham Road were my election priorities this year. After a few “false dawns” the repairs are finally being done. It has shown up flaws in the council’s contracting system - a councillor should be able to use their local knowledge to ensure that nearby off-shoot roads (in this case literally just a few yards long) are included in the contract and do not have to be returned to separately. I will be making this point in the relevant scrutiny committee this month.

Darland SchoolIn my August news I referred to a number of factors that were indicators of a good year for Darland School. One of the issues was the return from a licensed deficit to a projected balanced budget for 2012-2013. This was made very clear in October’s Customer, Performance and Resources Scrutiny meeting from a budget monitoring report. With a projected positive shift of £167,075 in secondary school balances, Darland provides over 95% of this increase. Whilst not without its pain, this is a tribute to the work of head teacher Peter Agnew, bursar Janice Barnes and the Darland team. Well done all.

Records of Marford QuarryI am proud to be a working director of the MYPAG group (with a stress on the working!) and work is continuing on the paths and potential tree planting. I can remember seeing photos of the Marford quarries as working quarries in local history talks. If anyone has such photos or other records, the MYPAG group would welcome and look after them and once archived the originals will be returned.

ChristmasMany thanks to those who donated spare decorations for the tree; we will ensure they are put to good use. The semi-traditional community carol-singing around the tree near Gresford Post Office is to take place on Saturday December 8th starting at 6.00 pm. It is hoped that a number of the local shops will be opened prior to this for Christmas fare and it is also rumoured that a bearded gentleman in a red coat may put in an appearance.

PEDESTRIAN CROSSING I am still worried by the number of vehicles that fail to stop for people who are crossing the road at the top of Marford Hill. The only statistics kept by the police and the Council Highways department are for accidents. I would like to know how many near misses have occurred. Would you send me an e-mail if you have stepped on to the crossing and a vehicle has failed to stop for you recently (since January 2012)? If you can say what time of day it was, the date and which way the vehicle was going, it will help. For any dangerous incident ring the police on 101.MARFORD PLAY AREA After complaints were made about the poor reinstatement of the field, the contractors came back, dug over and reseeded the area. Unfortunately this has delayed its use again for general games, but I am pleased that a reasonable surface will be achieved.ROAD & PAVEMENT RESURFACINGWe are still waiting for the resurfacing of Willow Drive, Hayfield Drive and Birch Drive. I hope this will not be delayed by bad weather. Any piece of roadway or pavement which develops a pothole should be reported to the Council on their website or by ringing 298989. If you think that a particular stretch is particularly poor and in need of resurfacing, please let me know and I will get it assessed to see if it can be included in the programme for next year.MAES Y PANT / HOLLOWFIELD The main paths have been laid and it is much easier to walk around the old quarry now. Hundreds of small trees will be planted in November by volunteers. These trees (which are varieties native to this area) have been donated by the Woodland Trust which is committed to restoring native woodlands. Work is carried out by groups of volunteers trying to make it safer and tidier, particularly on most Sunday mornings from10.00am,. Anyone who wants to help should check on the Maes y Pant website.

Hi Readers,

Well, it’s been quite a month for me – after last month’s revelations about Woodygate, I have been besieged with requests for interviews. However, I have retained my dignity and resisted – if only Kira had done the same…………….enough of this!

I have been busy dealing with correspondence that has come in during the month and in response to the lady from Burton who raised the point about the missing letterbox – I have mentioned this again to Himself and he assures me that he has spoken to the Post Office and the replacement is due in December. I miss having my walks up there, particularly as we have to pass Striker’s house where there is often a juicy treat on offer! Strangely enough, I have also been handed copy correspondence in respect of a young Cairn Terrier called Lottie, who has received a warning letter from the Post Office as she has apparently been ‘menacing’ the postman – I guess in effect she has had an ASBO for dogs. Not the way us terriers should be behaving, but sounds like a very spirited young lady to me – maybe I should call round and interview her! Watch out, Kira!!

I have been visiting the Ynys Mon again which I always enjoy. Whilst Himself enjoys trawling around graveyards looking for his long departed relatives, I enjoy racing around on the beach. I amazed Himself by managing a 4 ½ hour walk with no complaints at all. Just shows what I can do when I want to! Somebody had spotted a West Highland Terrier walking with the Monday afternoon group who walk from the weir and I was asked if it was me – I have to admit that I was fast asleep at the time but if anyone has any information as to who this fine specimen is I would be interested to hear! I also have to mention that I noted one of the contestants on ‘Strictly’ had a Cairn Terrier under her arm last week – takes me back to when I used to dream about Kira and I appearing on the series, but sadly that seems to be a fading dream.

I’m not looking forward to the dark nights coming upon us once again and fewer opportunities for running across the fields. Can you believe it – as soon as the temperatures start to fall, guess who is taken to have most of his hair cut off. I am feeling very chilly at the moment ….. never mind…

See you soon,

Douglas xx

essential gardening

Plant spring bulbs - Continue to plant spring-flowering bulbs, making sure you place them at the right depth. Tidy borders - Any perennials past their best can be cut right down, clearing away remains and adding them to the compost heap. Plant new hedges - Container-grown evergreens and conifers planted now will get a really good start in life, so complete new hedging projects as soon as possible. Divide perennial asters - Perennial asters like Aster x frikartii ‘Monch’ produce striking display of bold daisy flowers from late summer for an attractive autumn show. Lift and divide clumps every second or third year after removing old flowering stems and replant the new sections, watering them in thoroughly. Wallflowers - Fill gaps in borders with wallflowers for a great blaze of spring colour. Space them so that they will grow into one another and, for extra impact, plant tulips with flowers in a contrasting colour between them. Lawn care - Spike lawns using a hollow-tined aerator and brush grit into the holes to improve drainage.Frost protection - Watch out for frost, which can bring a sudden end to fading summer displays. Bring tender plants and crops under cover or, if time runs short,

keeping a few sheets of fleece handy to throw over plants or containers can give some temporary protection.

Collect fallen leaves - Make light work of your autumn leaf collection by investing in a vacuum for the garden. Many have an internal shredder blade fitted that chops up the leaves as they pass into the collecting bag. This helps to speed up decomposition into friable leaf-mould.

Seeds - Saving seed not only spares you expense, but can produce novel results. Try leaving the last of the sweet peas on their plants to set seed and develop pods. Once ripe, they can be picked and the seed removed, cleaned and stored. Alternatively, sow sweet peas now for early blooms. Seed can also be saved from crops such as peas and runner beans.

Green manure - Cover areas of bare soil with green manure crops, especially in the kitchen garden. Field beans and winter rye can be sown well into November. Both these green manures can be dug into the soil in spring, helping to improve its structure and increase its organic content. They are equally valuable in breaking down clay soils and adding heart to sandy ones.

Houseplants - Should be watered less frequently as temperatures drop.

Wrecsam Tri Club’s Tim Burnett has gone to take on the world for Team GB in the ITU World Triathlon Championships in Auckland, New Zealand, which is to place at the end of October

Tim, from Rossett, qualified for the Olympic-distance event this summer at the Shropshire Triathlon in Ellesmere and backed this up with a 4th place in his age group at the Deva Triathlon in Chester – also a qualifying event – a week later. He is hoping to improve on his performance at last year’s World Championships held in Beijing, where he finished in 16th place, 8th of the GB Team.

Tim has also qualified to compete in the ETU European Triathlon Championships to be held in Alanya, Turkey next June, after finishing 3rd in his age group at the Bala Standard Triathlon in September.

“It’s a great honour to be able to compete for Team GB once again. The atmosphere of the big events is superb. Britain always sends a good number of athletes which makes for a real party atmosphere but, of course, there is some serious racing to be

done as well! This year in particular we will be hoping to continue the excellent run of TeamGB sporting success. I am extremely grateful for all the support I have received, in particular for sponsorship from Hadlow Edwards Wealth Management and also from Wrexham Council, including access to the superb council sports facilities. Also from friends, clubmates and a very understanding family who put up with me going out training!”The Age Group World Championship coincides with the elite World Series Grand Final and paratriathlon world championships, all being held over a 3-day weekend of racing. Britain’s Jonathan Brownlee, Olympic bronze medallist, currently heads the World Series and will be looking to consolidate his position and take the championship.

Want to lose weight and get fit but don’t want to put the hours in?

GET FIT FASTHigh intensity training is the most effective way of shedding weight and getting fit fast, and beats slogging for hours at exercise etc. What high intensity training does for the body is to educate the body to recover quicker. This includes the heart which I will come back to. High intensity training works by getting your heart rate to maximum or as near as you can get, then recover until back down to resting heart rate, then repeat the exercise until you reach maximum or as near as.This type of training kick starts the body into adapting quicker and gaining more fast twitch fibres ( these are the good looking fibres like you see on sprinters instead of long distance runners) and most importantly shedding those unwanted pounds.

Back to the heart, the heart is also a muscle and therefore can grow and get stronger. So this type of training comes with loads of health benefits. One of them is the less likelihood of having a heart attack. Think about when most people have heart attacks, we have all heard the stories of someone running for the bus, or someone getting scared, this raises the heart rate up phenomenally and the heart is just not prepared for this, so by conditioning the heart we are without even knowing becoming less prone to a heart attack.

If you want to find out more about HIT (high intensity training)training, or just general advice give me a call on 07909300024 or go have a look on my website JasonPena.co.uk

mailboxLAVISTER CHAPEL SUPPORT GROUP

AUTUMN EVENTA pleasant evening was enjoyed by our supporters listening to “Sounds Familiar” a mixed choir from Mold. They sang a selection of well known songs and a compilation from “Les Miserables”.Also taking part were several young musicians from Gresford Methodist Church, Rebekah Bentley, Bethan and Robert Tarver, who were accompanied by Sandra Tarver. Supper was served by the support group members together with fruit drinks provided by Moira Taylor and friends. A raffle helped swell the amount raised to £500, and £130 of hospice merchandise goods were also sold.Eluned Griffiths, Chair of the Board of Nightingale House, thanked the group for their support over the last twenty years. On Saturday 24th November Gresford Methodist Church arepresenting a concert in aid of Nightingale House. Dear Mr. Isaacs. The Rossett Fish Pass Project. This Council has grave concerns about the now completed Fish Pass at Rossett weir. The project has not come up to the standards promised at pre-construction meetings with your Officers. The particular concern is that of Child Safety. The weir now presents itself as a Playground in that, at normal river levels it is possible for a small person to easily walk across the top of the weir and stand on the top of the fish pass walls. When this concrete surface of these walls become clad in algae and moss it will be extremely slippery and, bearing in mind the depth of the ‘Resting Pool’, will present a dangerous hazard. As a minimum, Notices are required pointing out this hazard. It was believed that the construction of the fish pass walls would be totally clad in stone with the effect that the aforementioned hazard would not exist.Mr. Winstone of your Bangor Office has offered to place a commemorative seat at a location to be decided. This gesture is welcomed with the final decision as to its location yet to be decided. The placing of an information board is also welcomed, it’s location to be decided in consultation with local residents.Yours sincerelyF.
