Welcome

Quite appropriately this month we have the restored war memorial on Croeshowell Hill on the front cover to mark the 100 years since the first world war. It looks great doesn’t it? Mind

you I feel guilty as it has reminded me of the number of times I have gone past it and not noticed it. Soon sadly we will lose connection with real history as the remaining few that are still around from the first world war won’t be with us. I remember my own grandparents stories vaguely from the second world war when my nan worked in the land army, with the other females I think, farming food etc, and grandad worked in an engineering factory for the war cause, down in Gloucester, if my memory serves me right. I can’t imagine what it must have been like to live through a war, and it’s thanks to all the people at that time and involved in the 2 wars that I don’t have to, and it’s lovely we are remembering it this month. Mind you Putin frightens me, but we won’t go there!

I was also fortunate to go to the Eisteddfod a few weeks ago. Every year I have said I must go and never made it. I attended the Saturday evening event, at the end of the week long international music and dancing celebration and competition at the pavilion in Llangollen, and was enjoyably entertained by the 2 welsh singers from Britain’s Got Talent, Richard and Adam. They weren’t competing, I think they’ve proved their

worth on the singing front on national tv, but it was great for them to attend the Eistedffod as local guys and open and close the Saturday evening show. I am sure they are greatly in demand these days. They sang a few songs and were fantastic and were followed by some cultural dancing and singing finals. I was amazed at how far the singing groups and dancers came from: Argentina, Czechoslovakia to name but a few, although visa restrictions hampered more attending this year which was a shame. So if you haven’t been, put it in your diary for next year. It’s a very professional and enjoyable event and like all local events needs our support. Thank you to GHP Legal for their kind invite and hospitality.

Thank you to Ollie Buckley for his keen interest and help in the magazine on a voluntary basis, a budding journalist and photographer hopefully and grandson of local Burton residents. Keep your eye out for his contribution, so we can help develop his portfolio for university. I am hoping he will attend the local shows at the end of the month to take some snaps, which reminds me, a local event mentioned that someone had said they were the essentials journalist recently and were let in. If you are intending to attend an event and take pictures for the magazine please let me know first so I can clear it with the organisers to save any embarrassment.

Have a lovely August, and see you around the villages in the sun.

All the best., Jill

Anyone visiting our unique offices set in the picturesque village of Harthill, just outside Tattenhall, almost always comments about how relaxing they find it. A visit to a lawyer’s office can be daunting, so we have tried to change the experience and make it one that you will want to repeat! Parking is right outside and office and free.

Deborah Wilkinson is a qualified specialist Lawyer and Commissioner for Oaths (FCILEx) and is also a full professional member of Solicitors for the Elderly, which is a national network of Lawyers who are trained in advising on matters that affect the elderly.

If you need some advice on making a

Lasting Power of Attorney, making a will, inheritance tax planning within a will or assistance with an estate when someone has passed away, we can help you. Many clients ask “how can we ensure our property stays in the family?” and “how can we protect our property should a person go into care?”; the answer could lie within your will. Under current legislation if you own a property, solely own the property, become ill or infirm and have to be taken into residential care, the local authority have the power to order the sale of the family home and use the proceeds of sale to pay toward the cost of such care. If this happens, it could mean that your children lose out on their inheritance.

If you are interested in finding out more, please contact us and we would be happy to provide more information.

This is Malcolm Hemmings aged 77 who moved to Rossett over a year ago. From the age of 8 he has entertained in pubs, nightclubs and theatres all over Britain, as a

comedian ventriloquist and for some years travelled in circus. In April this year he was invited to take part in the popular tv game show Deal or No Deal, and asked to take his ventriloquist dolls with him to add to the entertainment.

These programmes are recorded 6 months in advance and so will be seen on our tv everyday from the 15th of October to 5th November. I did ask if he won the big one but he’s not allowed to say. However, he did assure us that Noel Edmonds and the banker, do not know what is in any of the boxes and that they really look after the contestants.

We look forward to seeing his game on November 5th, and no doubt we will easily recognise him!

In June, Gresford Craft Group once again held a most successful Craft Exhibition at All Saints’ Church and the Memorial Hall, Gresford. A team of very able Craft Group members planned the Exhibition and a Craft Challenge, and then labelled and arranged all the items for display in the Church and Hall. There was a modest admission charge and the ever popular refreshments served in the Church House. Along with sales of Craft materials, art, plants, jams and chutneys, a Tombola and raffle, the Group raised a total of £6,714.58 during the week. Over 930 visitors came to enjoy the Exhibition with some visiting from far afield.

As a result of this most successful and popular event Gresford Craft Group has chosen to donate a total of £6,814.00 to their chosen charities this year.

I’m writing this in the middle of a heatwave; at least I hope it’s the middle and not the end. It’s meant that we’ve had a lot of insects, bees and butterflies and no more

so than in Maes-y-Pant. The meadow area, which I

think is known locally as “The Sheep Field”, has been packed with butterflies; initially ringlets but now gatekeepers and peacocks. If it is too hot for you, then Maes-y-Pant offers plenty of cooling shade under the conifers, as well.

I hoped to tell you about installing the pond and landscaping the centre of the site. We still haven’t a definite date, but it’s looking like September now. We will put up notices to let you know and we will need volunteer support. If you can help, then the pond will be something you can point to in the future and say you helped create it. Even so, we’ve decided to run volunteer sessions every Sunday morning during August for other tasks. We meet at the main entrance on Pant Lane at 10am. You can stay for as long or as little time as you can manage, but we aim to finish by 1pm - and with cake! All welcome.

We have been busy even without working on the pond. We’re in the middle of

designing four more information boards; one for the woodland gym area and one each giving information about the pond, meadow habitat and the trees to be found on site. Watch out for these. We’ll also be providing a bench for the meadow, pond and gym areas. All by request! If you are interested in sponsoring a bench, then please go to our website www.maes-y-pant.com and get in touch with us.

Talking of the gym, I hope you’ve seen the new equipment we’ve installed. It is signposted, so no excuses. Claire of Time2Train runs classes on Wednesday evenings and Friday mornings if you’re interested. There will also be sessions for over 50s, starting in August and subsidised by Actif Woods, Wrexham. Please watch out for advertisements about this.

We’re looking forward to the Gresford Festival on Bank Holiday Monday 25 August. We’ll be there, so come and visit our stand. The Marford Guides and Brownies will

also be there to tell you about this year’s Scarecrow Trail on September 14th. We’ll be pleased to talk to you about the site and what you think and we hope to have some other attractions. If you want a raffle ticket for the Festival and don’t know who to buy from, then please get in touch with us via the website, as anything we sell will help our funds.

Enjoy the summer!

As youngsters in Wrexham start school for the first time, and many more change classes or schools, parents may be interested in a gentle way of helping those who are struggling to cope.Anxiety about starting school is normal, but for some children the stress of a new school or teacher can be overwhelming. Symptoms of a child struggling to cope with the change in their routine can include behavioural problems such as aggression, or clinginess, physical problems like digestive upsets, headaches or a change in their sleeping pattern or excessive dreams or nightmares.

If you notice any of these changes at the start of the school term and know that the likely cause of the symptoms is anxiety and not something more serious, over the counter homeopathic remedies can be used at home to help youngsters through the difficult transition period. Here are just a few remedies and the situations in which they may be useful.

Press Release

Thinking of studying Medicine, Veterinary Medicine, Science or Engineering at a top university? We are a group of experienced teachers who hope to establish a specialist 16-19 free school in Chester, focusing on A levels in Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Maths and Further Maths. However, we will also offer Psychology, English Literature, History, Geography and French. We aim to recruit the best students from all backgrounds who are aspiring for entry to Oxford, Cambridge and Russell Group universities. We intend to do this by offering a sixth form experience that will equal the best of independent schools, but will be free of charge as this will be a state-funded school. All students will be offered research opportunities and work experience to help them realise their ambitions. We are also offering a problem-based learning course in medicine that is

not available at any other school or college, and specialist preparation for the most competitive universities and courses.

Our college will also offer an inspirational enrichment curriculum involving excellence in such areas as music, performing arts, theatre, and the history and philosophy of science. This bespoke environment will give our students the best possible chances of success in gaining places on competitive courses at leading universities.

We have been successful in gaining approval from the New Schools Network, which is helping us to prepare our application to the Department for Education. As part of our application we need parents to register an interest in the school to show that we have public support. This does not commit you to anything. We are hoping that parents of students who will be in years 9 and 10 in September will express an interest in coming to our college so that we have evidence of demand to present to the Department for Education. Registering an interest simply means that you would like to see this college being available as one of your options when your child reaches age 16. Although the college will be in Chester, we can accept students from anywhere within commuting distance of Chester, including students from Flintshire and Wrexham.

You can register interest and find out more about our proposed free school on our website at www.cheshireschool.org

Way back some twenty years ago in 1994, a small group of people decided to form a social club playing indoor bowls. This was the beginning of the Burton & Rossett short-mat indoor Bowling Club which continues to thrive to this day. What began as a very limited number of people soon grew to over 30 members, all of whom played bowls at St Peter’s School in Rossett on a Monday evening from 7pm to 9pm. Having so many members soon resulted in a committee being formed and, after some generous loans from a few of the original founders, the club found itself on a sound financial footing enabling the purchase of necessary equipment and, more recently, a much sort-after handling unit.

The 18th of July this year saw the club’s recently introduced Presentation Evening which is held annually in celebration of a year of success for everyone involved. It became apparent to me, since I was given the honour of attending the event, just how close this group of people have become and, in many ways, it was heart warming to see the bonds formed between each and

every one of the members. Everyone was enjoying themselves and, after a three course meal,

the winners were announced. The best male, female and duo were all awarded their trophies and given an ovation by their fellow club members. It really was a sight to remember.

What an achievement for those who founded the club, enabling so many others throughout the past twenty years to enjoy themselves. Not to mention having a great game of bowls, lots of fun and a worthwhile catch-up on a Monday evening. Roll on the next twenty years!

New members are always welcome. If you would like to be a part of this club and help it grow and prosper or if you would simply like some extra information regarding the club, please contact Vivienne on 01244 579053. Thank you.

Gresford Methodist Church recently celebrated it’s 135th birthday. The week-end was marked with an Afternoon Tea on Saturday 28th June in the church hall. An audience of church members enjoyed a talk by Penny who showed her dresses from her days as an officer on cruise liners. A sum of £260 was raised for the new project of improvements to the church building.

Sunday 29th June was the day when the church’s birthday was celebrated. The Marford Guides and Brownies paraded their flags into the church at the beginning of the service. The preacher was the Rev. Philip Barnett, who had been invited as a former superintendent minister of the Wrexham Circuit. He stressed the need for the church to be ready for new challenges that may

arise, and to take the church out into the community.

A lunch followed the service, prepared by church members, and the money raised will be given to the Wrexham Roofless Appeal.

Balanced reporting of Homeopathy

I see in your July 2014 edition of Essentials an article on homeopathy. I’m not adverse to reporting on pseudoscience type topics but think it is important to provide balance to ensure that readers are fully informed of what they are reading.

The last sentence in your article states “Homeopathic remedies are non-toxic, non-addictive and can be safely prescribed alongside conventional drugs”. In the interests of journalistic balance it would also be appropriate to add “and in scientific test these remedies have been found to be no more effective than placebos”.

Alternatively like other magazines do you have a clear statement that says that “This is an Advertisement Feature” since it was related to the advertisement on the opposite page.

Otherwise a very good magazine and very interesting, informative and read from cover to cover.

Thanks,G James

Hi Jill

Just to thank you very much for coming up here to deliver the magazines. It’s very interesting and I’ve enjoyed reading it and getting up to date with the news.

I was sorry to read that ATS is moving. Totally agree with your comments about the staff, especially Carl.

Dear Readers

Rossett Community Council recently held an open surgery and one of the main issues for the local community related to dogs fouling in public places and either it not being removed by the owner or put in a bag and the bag left.

Additional bins were also requested but with the current financial situation for the County Council any additional equipment will be limited.

The removal of dog faeces tends to be a reoccurring frustration and yet it is so easily remedied by responsible owners. As the mother of a child who must have poo magnets in his shoes, can I please ask again that all dog owners clean up after their dogs.

Regards.

There has been a Methodist Church in Gresford/Marford for 135 years, serving both villages as a place of worship and a centre of communal activities. The church hall, which is part of our community service, is at the rear of the church building and is used for many regular activities including Guides, Brownies and Badgers. It is also used for dance classes, Welsh language studies, slimming meetings and various other activities in addition to church based meetings, BBQ’s and special events. It is also available for hire for birthday parties or similar events.

This community hall was recently refurbished to improve its appearance and enhance the ambience. The lighting was improved, including the stage lighting, disabled access was improved and more comfortable seating was provided.

We celebrated our anniversary in June and at the same time launched fundraising to carry out much needed improvement for the church. We need also to ensure that we meet current health and safety requirements as well as improving disable access. The heating, lighting, seating and decoration all need improving. We need to raise £45,000. To this end we will be holding various events over the next few months and would be delighted if the communities of Gresford and Marford could offer their support in any way. Details of our events will be posted on the notice board outside the church and on our website at: gresfordmethodist.wordpress.com. All contributions and offers of help will be much appreciated.

Red Lion Retail Unit to go ahead As you know Marstons now have permission to build a shop on the Red Lion car park.

According to the approved plan, all vehicles will enter the site through the entrance nearest to Chester and leave at the pub end of the car park. This is considered to be a safer exit for the increased traffic expected.

It may become advisable to have the 40mph restriction on Marford Hill reduced to 30mph. I would be interested in your views.

Appeal against Drilling for Gas planning refusal We are still waiting to hear whether permission will be granted by the Planning Inspector to drill a test borehole for methane gas in the coal seams under parts of our villages.

Resurfacing of Roads I have been assured that the much delayed work on the road near the Red Lion pedestrian crossing is to be carried out in September. In the same month the junction of Hayfield Drive and Hillock Lane will be attended to and we will hopefully no longer have a skating rink there this winter.

Marford Community Centre New windows have been installed in the hall. To facilitate this work, the Management Committee have been lent £4788 by Gresford Community Council.

As soon as they receive the grant they have been allotted, the Community Council will be repaid.

Gas Fired Power Station The consultation period for the planned power station on the old Owens Corning site on Wrexham Industrial Estate closes on 24th August. Details can be found on the website wrexham-power.com. The plans will be dealt with by an Inspector and not by Wrexham Council. Any new overhead electric supply line will need a separate application.

Marford and Gresford Luncheon Club The Club meets again after the summer break on 9th and 23rd September at 12.30pm at Marford Community Centre. Please ring Beryl Blackmore on 01978 855691 to book a meal. Further meetings are planned on 7th and 18th October.

Reading the article in last months Essentials Mag. about the forthcoming Vintage and Classic Car event by the Bersham Vintage Machinery Society on the old iron works site at Bersham on August 24th., it made me think how lucky we are in this area to have so many such colourful vintage events- very often with the added magic of steam! The mere mention of Bersham also reminds me of Jasper Williams who lived at the Ddol, Bersham, and became first Chairman of the newly formed Clwyd Vintage and Veteran Machinery Society in the ’70s. Who could ever forget Jasper on such occasions, dressed in period breeches, waistcoat, red neckerchief and bowler hat -a typical vintage showman. He was also the proud owner of a 1929 Morris Commercial lorry that had once belonged to Cudworth Engineering of Wrexham, with the unique telephone number of Wrexham 1. Alas, Jasper passed away some years ago, but the vintage movement is rich in knowledgeable characters of his type. We certainly won’t forget ‘Bill the Beard’ Davies and his unique vintage fire engine - a very colourful character indeed.

What wonderful old vehicles you see at the shows, all kept in pristine condition by their dedicated owners. Steam adds a magic all its own, and the sound of the steam organ sets your pulses racing as you approach the ground. The steam rollers and traction engines show

just how the Victorians used to do it, and the ingenuity of the threshing demonstrations etc. are also very interesting to watch. The steam wagons, such as Sentinels, could seemingly pull anything, and I always remember the Castle Brick wagons and their heavily laden trailers shrouded in clouds of steam, as they laboured up Marford Hill.

A fiend of mine, Dennis Jones, used to drive the shunting engine at Gresford Colliery for many years, and always told me about the merits of the oily rag! He owned an old Ford Corsair at the time, and had coated the underside with oil which made it completely rust free. His brother did the same with his Austin A60, but went a stage further by filling the sills with oil as well. We used to pull his leg about changing the oil in his engine and sills every 10,000 miles!

The brass medallion bedecked Shire horses usually add the finishing touch to many vintage shows. Many years ago, two such horses were used by Woods, Chain Makers of Saltney, to move the heavy anchor chains around their yard. My mother in-law, Gladys Lewis, used to work there and loved those horses. She died two years ago in her ‘90s, dementia having taken away most of her memory, but she could still remember their names until the end - Captain and Dandy!

Llangollen International Musical Eisteddfod 2014

This year’s Llangollen International Musical Eisteddfod was special. Of course they are all special but somehow this year everything seemed to work together, the wonderful weather, the teeming crowds, the enthusiastic performers merged into one magical whole.

This little Welsh town has

played host to people from across the world in a spirit of unity. It began in 1947 as a result of an idea to promote harmony between nations following the Second World War. A choir was formed to welcome the first performers from across Europe and beyond. It has continued to grow forming friendships between different peoples and cultures.

This year the feeling was almost tangible, everyone seemed to be affected by it. One day dancers and singers from the Ukraine and Russia performed for each other, and were congratulated by Terry Waite.

He also spoke about the ending of apartheid when he was still in captivity during a concert by the Cape Town Opera Company and others, which brought everyone to their feet in appreciation of this great man who has done so much to encourage world peace.

I feel so lucky to live close to such a special place where each year the hope is kept alive that one day all the world will be one.

Protect your property with Immobilise

At any, but especially this time of year, both opportunist thieves and seasonal burglars are on the look-out for easy targets. The Immobilise register – which has been promoted by North Wales Police for some time, is an online tool where people can register their possessions and valuables free of charge.

Immobilise is the world’s largest free register of possession ownership details. These details are searchable by all UK Police Forces and form an extremely powerful tool in helping to identify and return recovered, lost or stolen personal property to its rightful owner. Virtually any item can be registered, from your TV to your toaster! You can also register bicycles & jewellery on the database and upload a picture to help distinguish it from any other property.

Immobilise has been proven to be effective at tackling crime on a national level. These details are held on a secure system that is approved to Government standards. Once an item has been registered, officers can access the database to trace the owners of any property they may recover.

Other valuable items such as iPads, laptops, iPods, game consoles, cameras, mobile phones and satellite navigation systems can also be registered with Immobilise.

“The free Immobilise property registration service is a very powerful tool in the fight against crime,” said Inspector Julie Sheard from the North Wales Police Community Safety Department.

“We are urging people to register their property, in particular items such as mobile phones onto the Immobilise database. It only takes a few minutes

and if your property is stolen and later recovered, there is a greater chance of it being returned.”

“Once you have opened a free account on Immobilise, it is important to keep it up to date, either in notifying the system that an item has been lost or stolen or

in registering new items that you have purchased.”

She added: “The more people that register their items such as phones and computer tablets on the Immobilise website, the better chance we have of tracking down criminals and returning stolen property back to its rightful owner.” Immobilise is used by various police forces all over the country and has proved to be a popular tool in deterring crime. Register your property for free at Immobilise www.immobilise.com and improve your chances of getting it back if it’s ever lost or stolen.

Gardening Tips

Watering your garden is a must during the summer months to keep everything lush and flowering (make sure there are no restrictions in place). But make sure you do it correctly.

Don’t water in drips and drabs! How often do we turn on the hose in the evening and water the whole garden in half an hour? And because the soil looks wet we assume all is well. Wetting the surface in this way will encourage plants to grow shallow roots to reach that water instead of deep ones. Has this happened and you fail to water regularly or are on holiday the damage to the plants will be similar to drought conditions.

Give the garden a thorough drenching!Drench it every 10 days during dry weather but take care to avoid water logging as few

plants will tolerate that. The soil should be damp about 5-6 inches deep. A fairly fine spray is always better than large droplets as it won’t damage any plants and won’t cake the surface.

Water in the evenings!Because temperatures are lower, water evaporation is slower and the water has more time to penetrate the soil. The widespread belief that watering during bright sunshine will scorch the leaves of plants is a myth by the way. There is no evidence of plant damage during bright, showery weather.

Be particularly generous on climbing plants close to a wall! The wall absorbs a great deal of moisture from the soil so compensate that when watering. It’s best to plant the roots 15in from the base of the wall for that reason.

Network RailI have held several meetings with both Network Rail and the sponsors of the dualling scheme, The Welsh Government. I have made it clear that I will strongly oppose the permanent closure of the Broadoak crossing. I have also received a written acceptance from Network Rail that their contractors have been less than good neighbours in their execution of the contract to date. I have been given assurances about the way in which they will manage the contract in the future. I have requested that Network Rail donate the site of the former Station to the Community on completion of the work in order for the site to be available for a potential new Doctors’ surgery. That request is being considered.

Webcasting As part of the strategy for more open government, the meetings of full Council and Executive Board are now available on the Wrexham County Borough web site. The set-up is easy to follow and you can see all of the meeting or just skip to the agenda items that interest you.

Alyn Drive Footpath The formal proposal has been submitted to the Council by Watkin Jones, and this now has to follow the statutory process before the footpath can be designated. Hopefully this will be done as soon as possible.

Darland Woods I have received a number of complaints from residents regarding irresponsible dog owners who allow their dogs to foul this area. I am trying to get a waste bin, but in these straightened times, even that takes time. In the meantime I would ask all dog owners to remember these areas are for the enjoyment of all and to use bags for waste and place them in your own bins.

Grass Cutting A review is being carried out as to the poor performance in this area this year. Instead of working out how to perform more efficiently with less money, the Environment Department resorted to a 50% reduction in the number of grass cuts. It is clear that in the future there will be more areas left to grow naturally and in some cases wild flower seeds planted. This has to be balanced with the need to have regard to road safety and a satisfactory appearance in residential areas.

Budget It is anticipated that the Council will have to cut a further £11 million pounds from its 2015/16 budget. This is in addition to the £15m in recent years and is likely to be £45m over the next three years. I am leading on the public consultation and in the autumn we will embark on an extensive consultation exercise aimed at informing the residents of the County Borough what the options are and asking them to respond to those available to us.

Fibre Optic Broadband I receive many requests for a progress update. The latest information that I have is that the Rossett exchange will be included in the July – September 2014 programme.

An apology I wrongly gave the date of the Rossett Village Festival as Bank Holiday Monday, when of course it is Saturday August 23rd.

For birds August is a quiet month. Following the breeding cycle the next major task facing all species is plumage renovation. Typical songbirds have between 1,500 and 3,000 feathers most of which are replaced at this time of year by a progressive moult; worn feathers drop out and as new ones develop their flying ability is inevitably impaired so while moulting they need to keep a low profile. Singing is much reduced and emerging replacement feathers tend to be dull thus reducing their likelihood of attracting unwelcome predators. For waterfowl the contrast is particularly marked. Ducks, geese and swans drop and replace all flight feathers together so are temporarily grounded. As they can swim the inability to fly is no great problem but for good measure gaudily feathered drakes assume dull camouflage plumage known as “eclipse.”

Camouflage plumage is distinctive for some of our familiar garden birds. Juvenile male Blackbirds are brown with mottled breasts and resemble their thrush cousins. Young finches lack many colourful adult features; Goldfinch fledglings have plain faces and young Greenfinches are brown and streaky. It is fortunate for spotty young Robins that they do not have red breasts - not least to protect them from their own parents. Despite featuring as amiable symbols of

peace and goodwill on Christmas cards Robins are cantankerously belligerent and obsessively territorial. For an adult Robin the sight of another red breast is like the proverbial red rag to a bull. Thanks to a spotty brown breast many a young Robin may have been spared infanticide!

Adult Spotted Flycatchers are misnamed as they are actually streaky but the name is appropriate to the spotty young. The Burton pair mentioned in last month’s article produced five chicks. The accompanying photograph shows one of the parents at their nest in a requisitioned planter. As Spotted Flycatchers are in serious decline, possibly due to problems in their African winter quarters, it would be good to hear of any other successful local breeding pairs.

Well by the time this edition of Essential pops through your letter box, the Gresford Village Festival will only be a matter of days away. On behalf of the committed team that have worked

tirelessly behind the scenes, I would like to thank Jill for help and support in promoting the event which all readers will know is planned for Monday 25th August at the grounds of the Memorial Hall. There should be something for everyone – we have a Children’s Funfair, Donkey Rides, sideshows galore, entertainment by Tenovus Choir and Gresford Bell ringers, Tai Kwando and Olympus Gym Club displays, a Gresford Mining Exhibition and this is to name just a few of the attractions planned. I am putting the final touches to the event programme at the moment so if any local businesses would like to support the event by placing an advert please call me on 07525-824-679.

As indicated in last month’s edition, I have included this feature on

Gresford Cricket Club and particularly their vibrant Youth section. They have a dedicated set of coaches at the club but mentoring their very successful Under 13 side is Neil Ellwood whose side were winners of the North Wales Knockout Cup which subsequently saw them reach the all Wales final in Newport, Gwent. Despite a gallant display, they were out-muscled by a Cardiff Academy side. Neil must also be rightfully proud of the current formof his two

sons Alex and Christopher who have both been scoring runs for fun and last month added further County caps representing Denbighshire. I also enjoyed watching Chris etch out a career best 7 wickets for 15 and was then unbeaten on 35 runs when his side gave Conwy quite a thrashing.

What a delight it was to receive feedback from Val Shields and Susan Hill from the village Craft Group who shared the

staggering news that their recent exhibition raised in excess of £6,500 all of which was presented to a wide variety of local charities and included a £1,000 donation to Gresford Trust. A hearty congratulations to you all.

There have been changes behind the scenes at both of the football clubs. At Gresford Athletic, Julian Davies is back at the helm as Chairman and appointed as secretary is Timothy Jones. Taking over the Chairman’s position at Marford and Gresford Albion is Rob Cole

and he is seen pictured here with Under 11 manager Tony Roberts and Secretary Paul Roberts as they proudly display the

Award the team won for their sportsmanship.

Wrapping up this months update is the latest winners of the Trust 100 Club. 1st Prize C E Morgan, 2nd Prize P Charles and 3rd prize R Willis.

We have been writing a wide range of articles in Essentials magazine for over 9 years (time flies!) so a change of tack is perhaps now due.

We would like to introduce the completely imaginary/made up ‘Taylor’ family to you. Some of their issues and concerns we are helping them with might sound familiar – because whilst of course they are not based on any real single family they represent perhaps some of the challenges many of us face with our finances today.

Here goes with a little background.

Pete and Sally (who are both 48) have been married for 24 years and have 2 kids Adam and Bethan who are 16 & 14.

Pete has worked in the electrical engineering industry all of his life, originally for a couple of large employers but 10 years ago set up his own business to provide electrical design solutions (whatever that means) in the North West and North Wales. Business is good, keeps him very busy and generates a healthy profit.

Sally has always worked within the NHS. Full time before the kids arrived, part time for a few years and now back to nearly full time.

They describe themselves as reasonably well organised with their facts and figures and are keen to make sure they are doing the right things now and for the future with their finances.

When we met recently one real problem was bugging them. They always used to go to their Bank and by and large take the steer of an adviser who had been there a good while with their savings, pension planning, mortgage and life cover needs. However, he has gone (and will not be replaced) and they are told now that ‘no advice’ is available going forward, which is to say the least disappointing.

We discovered that neither Pete nor Sally had made a Will. They mistakenly believed that their parents would simply be able to sort everything out for the kids if sadly they were to pass away.

Peter was particularly keen to find out just how well his Pension funds were doing (he had no idea how his funds compared to the best performers). He wants to retire in 10 – 12 years time and thought it was sensible to invest some time now getting to grips with this area.

Sally was more interested in their ISAs. We discussed what she could do with the Savings ISAs which were offering around 0.5% interest and have sat there for some years “doing nothing”.

We moved on to talk about the kids and two very different plans emerged.

Adam wants to be in a rock band and can’t wait to leave school. Bethan is very academic and has set her sights on working in the nuclear industry and wants to do a 4 year degree followed by a Masters and PHD – in all perhaps 7 or 8 years of further education.

At Hadlow Edwards we offer a distinctive approach to our clients and their financial affairs. You get all the benefits of personal attention and years of experience, from an approachable, friendly team of professionals. We take car of the details and take away the frustration of financial planning.

Your home may be repossessed if you do not keep up repayments on your mortgage.

Fortunately Sally’s parents are in a position to offer some financial help but the whole family finds this a delicate area to discuss and don’t really understand the gifting rules and opportunities. At the end of the day Sally’s parents very much wish to support their only grandchildren.

Sadly, Pete’s Father passed away nearly 2 years ago leaving Mum who is not in the best of health, financially “very comfortable”. Mother lives in a house much too big for her and having just turned 80 is concerned about Inheritance Tax and the challenges of her care needs in the future.

She has heard from friends that Wills can sometimes be “varied” and Trusts can be

used to make the very best use of their capital built up over many years. Pete and his Mother plan to explore this area further.

I think we all realised there was perhaps more to do than we originally thought. Our first meeting highlighted the need for both Pete and Sally to review some of their own affairs and think more carefully about the kids needs and their Parents planning.

By next month we will be able to tell you what their first steps were.

Perhaps one or two of the above subjects could remind you of your own position? We would be delighted to hear from you.

The writing of a Will involves the referral to a service that is separate and distinct to those offered by St. James’s Place. Wills and Trusts are not regulated by the Financial

Conduct Authority.

The value of an investment with St. James’s Place will be directly linked to the performance of the funds selected and may fall as well as rise. You may get back less

than the amount invested. An investment in a Stocks and Shares ISA does not provide the security of capital associated with a Cash ISA.

AL FLOWER SHOW

Burton and Rossett Horticultural Society’s annual June plant sale and flower show was held on Saturday 14th June in the Rossett Village Hall. It was supported by Rossett WI who provided wonderful home made cream teas. Carolyn Bates won the trophy for the most points in the show and Frank Evans won the Society Cup for the best rose.

The number of exhibits and exhibitors were up this years and it was very pleasing to see such a large number of entries from children. I hope their success encourages them to enter the Junior Section at our Horticultural Show which will be held 23rd August in conjunction with the Village Festival. In addition to the Horticultural classes there are classes for Cookery, Craft, Floral Art and the Junior section.

A copy of the Schedule can be obtained by contacting the Show Secretary on 01244 571338 or on the above website. Schedules will also be in local shops from the end of July.

The stalls did a roaring trade and the readings by local authors Mike Scott (of Glyndwr University), Lord Thomas and Gareth Roberts were packed out.

The volunteers did us proud selling raffle tickets, contributing things for stalls and prizes, helping on the day and we received a number of donations from people who could not attend; people have been so supportive and generous and we really appreciate this.

Speaking of prizes, there were lots to be won, with 15 prizes in the raffle, a Golden Ticket draw using the numbers on the entrance tickets and a Lucky Birthday draw too. A list of prize winners will be put up in the library and on our webpage on the Community Council website (http://www.gresford.org.uk/library.html). We’ll be putting pictures up on our FaceBook pages too (https://www.facebook.com/GresfordandDistrictCommunityLibrary).

We’ve had great support from all our local schools; they sent flyers home with the children, put up posters for us and bought raffle tickets. Special thanks go to All Saints staff who helped us with chairs, tables, games, photocopying – anything we asked for, really. The three primary headteachers have also welcomed us in to talk to pupils about the Summer Book Buzz; if all the children who said they were going to visit us actually do so we’ll be very busy bees indeed! We’re looking forward to it! (Thanks to those kind folk who have made £5 donations for Book Buzz prizes; we’ve received £30 to reward six avid readers already! The more donations we get, the more prizes we can award.)

We’re also very grateful for the support of local businesses. Delicious strawberries were provided at cost by Dickens Butchers in Gresford and the bubbly for the Buck’s Fizz and wine was also provided at a low price by the Clear Black Wine Company who also sold tickets for us, as did Gresford Newsagents, The Golden Lion and the Village Store in Rossett. Thanks to The Plough for giving us some liquid ink pens for our blackboards and to Jill and Essentials Mag for all the wonderful publicity and information-sharing.

We’re not certain at the time of writing exactly how much we raised through the Garden Party for GDCL but we think it will be close to £2k – a massive result considering the weather. This goes to show how many people in Gresford, Marford and Rossett believe that retaining their local library is vitally important and that they are prepared to back it with both their financial and hands-on help. Look out for other events; we’re planning something for Halloween - watch this space.

Finally, biggest thanks of all go to Lord Thomas and Baroness Walmsley who offered to open their garden for us and opened their lovely home instead. Lots of people with wet feet traipsing through – it’s a big ask, and they didn’t hesitate, they offered! Thank you both very much.

Red Lion AppealOwing to family reasons, I submitted my “words of wisdom” early last month so I am grateful to Jill for squeezing my comments concerning the Red Lion in. Even after twenty years dealings with planning decisions, some still mystify me and the Red Lion appeal decision fits firmly into that category. What I do know is that local people made their knowledge and views of their area crystal clear by a ratio of 600-5 and I applaud them. It is now up to us to prove the inspector right on one point. The report included conditions to “protect the viability of the Gresford Shopping area”, and whilst it is the job of our thirty plus businesses to compete for our needs we have a role in ensuring our independents stay vital.

Village activities 1-2-31. The report of the library group’s garden

party at Glasfryn are elsewhere in Essentials so I will just echo a huge Hoorah to our hosts, Lord Thomas and Baroness Walmsley, for their hospitality and also to a wonderful band of volunteers and the villagers of Gresford, Marford and further afield who lightened up a grey afternoon. As one of our directors said “if you believe in libraries it is money well spent.” Don’t worry Rossett - you too will host a fundraiser!

2. With many others, we shall be supporting the Rossett and Burton Show on the 23rd and the Gresford Festival on the 25th. Do come along!

3. In complete contrast, if you want to don wellies and the like, the annual “Lake Clear-up “is on the weekend of 6 & 7th September - start at 10am. Wrexham Council’s ecology officer is consulted on plans, and anyone interested in joining us can ring Marion Williams 01978 854633.

Rail link improvementI shall be attending the Rail Improvement session at Rossett in late July to see the plans and put my case. I try not to be jealous, but a very small slice of the billion pound Newport by-pass money may have truly provided a dual track all the way from Chester to Wrexham overcoming a lack of foresight by the planners in the 1980’s when the new A483 was planned. On a smaller scale, I shall be tackling Network Rail about the stone wall boundary between the rail line and the carriageway on the Griffin Hill, which is down in places.
