FROM THE PRINCIPAL In this final newsletter for 2009, I would like to thank all those members of the school community who have continued to support the school through their assistance and support. This assistance has come in many forms and I thank all members of the wider school community on behalf of the whole staff, for your encouragement and cooperation as we have done our best to prepare the young people in our care for the future. 2009 has been an extremely demanding year with all the issues associated with the swine flu pandemic and the many other issues we as a school have endeavoured to manage and respond to. The year has also had many highlights. Many of these were acknowledged in our annual Achievement Afternoon assembly this Tuesday. Included in this newsletter are the names of all those outstanding students who received awards. Also included in this newsletter are the names of all those students who received certificates in our final assembly as a result of their efforts in our final reports for the year. Staff Farewells
At the end of the year we also often say goodbye to staff who for a variety of reasons will not be with us next year. This year is no exception, however, on this occasion we say farewell to one of the stalwarts of this school, Mrs Sue Newstead.
Mrs Sue Newstead after a long career in education has decided to retire from her formal position within this school. Mrs Newstead has been a member of this school’s teaching staff since 1990 and in this time she has made an outstanding contribution to the very many students she has taught and cared for. As a support teacher, Mrs Newstead has always ensured that those students within the school who needed extra assistance in their learning have been looked after. She has been a strong advocate for her students and has always ensured that their learning experiences have been highly effective and supportive of their needs. Mrs Newstead has also ensured that those students within the school who could benefit from an alternative education program, through such activities as a work placement or a wilderness experience through programs such as Project Hahn could also be assisted. In recent years, Mrs Newstead introduced our Co-Pilots mentoring program which has been an outstanding success. I am pleased that Sue has agreed to continue to assist us in a voluntary capacity to maintain this very successful program. Mrs Newstead’s retirement will be a great loss to this school. Her corporate wisdom and experience will be impossible to replace. I know, however, that Sue is looking forward to the opportunity to travel and to also spend more time with her grandchildren. Thanks Sue and have a happy, healthy and fulfilling retirement. We also farewell Mr Darren Sangwell who joined our staff three years ago. Mr Sangwell has done an outstanding job as our leading Drama teacher and only Dance teacher. Mr Sangwell has been offered his ‘dream job’ at Rosny College working in the area of theatre production. I know our departing students in future years will be very glad to see a familiar face as they begin their studies at Rosny. Thanks Darren for all your excellent work, your enthusiasm and energy and we wish you all the best for the future. Mrs Jaynee Charleston will take maternity leave in Terms 1 and 2. We wish Jaynee all the best and look forward to her return to school in Term 3 next year.
We also farewell our Social Worker, Mel Langford, who has been transferred to new schools for 2010. Mel has done an outstanding job and I know will be greatly missed by our students and the many families she has given assistance to. We also farewell two staff who have been on temporary contracts in parts of the latter half of this year; Mr Robert Rands has done a great job in Science whilst Mrs Pam Morse has been on extended sick leave. Mr Phil Cases has also done a great job filling in for Mr Geoff Doig who has also been on sick leave during this term. We have really appreciated having such experienced staff to assist us in these positions. We also say farewell to two of our teacher aides who will not be with us in 2010. Michael Johnstone has done a great job in the learning support area along with Mrs Linda Riley who has also provided our students in the support area which much care and attention. Finally, we say farewell to our deaf interpreting staff. As a result of significant technological improvements for deaf and hearing impaired students, we will not require deaf interpreters in our classes for the first time since we took over the role as the Secondary Centre for Deaf Education in Hobart in 2002. Whilst we continue to have some hearing impaired students with us, most deaf students today can benefit greatly from cochlear implants and as a result do not need the assistance of an interpreter in their classes. I would like to thank Muriel Kent, Susan McGuiness, Veronica Azzopardi, and Roey Wilkinson for their often very demanding work in our classrooms over this seven year period. You will all be missed from our classrooms and from our school assemblies. On behalf of all members of the school staff I wish you all the very best for the future. Merry Christmas and have a safe and happy new year. Stephen Mannering Principal

Congratulations to: Welcome to the final update for the Rose Bay High Tiger Cubs Touch football Team: Grand Final. Our Captain for the final was Madi Gadd. Welcome to my final update and wrap up of our Grand Final. We entered this game against a team we had not played through the rounds. The Condors, a club side. So far we had not lost a game and finished on top of the ladder, Minor Premiers, a massive achievement for a school side. Not knowing much about this team we entered this game blind but very focused. We played our hearts out and dug deep, with all of the team working well as a unit. It was a hard fought match with both sides making errors that were uncharacteristic of a team in a grand final. Even though we did not win the game, we walked off winners. We made Rose Bay High proud and we walked away with the silver. I would like to take this opportunity to inform all the Staff and Students of Rose Bay High, this team has done our school proud and I hope that you see that what these girls have done, has now made our school a force to be reckoned with in the touch football arena. From me, YOU GIRLS ROCK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Mick Sharman Coach Rose Bay High Tiger Cubs Breakfast with the Stars Women’s Sport and Recreation host a special breakfast at the Grand Chancellor each year to
celebrate and encourage young women to be active. This year the highly successful Grade 7 Girls Hockey team and their Coach Mrs Miller
attended. A highlight for the girls was listening to the motivational guest speaker Allana Corbin who wrote the book “The Best I Can Be”, who spoke of her miraculous recovery from a Plane crash to
now inspiring others to be the best they can possibly be. Thank you to the parents who were able to attend and help with transport to the event. Senior Concert Band Tours Feeder Primary Schools The word for the tour was “brilliant” – as commented upon by many of the staff members
from the primary
schools who saw the show. On the 30th of November and 1st of
December, our Senior Concert Band performed at Lindisfarne North, Lindisfarne, Montagu Bay, Warrane, Bellerive and Cambridge Primary schools. We included in the performance, items from our Stage Band, Burning Ernie, an unplugged acoustic number by Sean Delaney and Jonno Ainslie, and the highlight of the show, for the younger members of the audience, was the Musical Fairytale, where Callum Johnston made an interesting debut as the sensational princess. Other pieces played by the Senior Concert Band included: Mission Impossible and Bohemian Rhapsody. It is always a hectic and busy tour and our members need to be exceptionally co-operative, caring and organised. So, well done to all our band members for the work they put in over the two days. J Dawes Animal Studies This option, for both Grades 9 and 10, has had a successful first year and I would like to thank those students who share a passion for animals, have worked hard and contributed to a successful unit of study. Thankyou also to those parents who shared their expertise and knowledge with us. Should any parent have an area of interest relating to animals, whether it be a business, hobby or on a volunteer basis please do not hesitate to contact me as I am always interested, as are our students.
I can be contacted through the school or via email. Many students received an overall assessment of either Good or Satisfactory on their reports. Whilst these are admirable I would like to acknowledge the following students who were recently presented with certificates in assembly for Excellence in Animal Studies. Special congratulations to Luke Johnston from Grade 10 and Isaac Williams from Grade 9 who have shared the top award for this subject. This was presented on Tuesday at Achievement Afternoon.
