MCS Journey

2012-13K-1 Teachers decide to create common core standards-based report cards.

2013-14All MCS K-1 teachers used electronic standards-based report cards

2013-142-6 teachers representing all 22 sites agreed standards-based report cards were a more effective way of reporting to parents.Teachers identified priority standards & created rubrics.

Comparing grading practicesPrevious Grading Practices Standards-based Grading

Percentage scores lump students into categories.

We compare students against students rather than the standard.

We consider other factors than simply a student’s ability to meet the standard.

Teachers weight assessments differently.

Students and parents know a student’s strengths / weaknesses.

Expectations are consistent from teacher to teacher – school to school.

Reports indicate a progression of learning.

Bring clarity in defining objectives.

Achievement levels show a progression of learning over the year.

Often students can mask their level of understanding in a grades-based system through effort, attendance or extra credit.◦ A student may know a concept, but due to

attendance issue receive a bad grade.◦ A student may not know a concept but because

they completed extra credit they get an “A.”

Benefits of Standards-based Reporting

Teachers met in the computer lab to take the SBAC practice test and tallied what standards were being assessed.

Teachers reviewed the previous grade’s standards and the next grades standards to select priority standards that will build endurance in our students.

How were the standards selected?
