Dear Parents/Caregivers, Welcome back to school everyone. Here we are in Term 4 already! Where did the year go? I hope youve all had a relaxing break after a very busy Term 3. It sounds like everyone has had a great time enjoying the lovely weather. Were off to a flying start to the term and everyone has settled back into the school routine quickly. As usual, well be very busy again this term as we approach the end of the year. We have some special events along the way including Swimming, Sports Day, POP night and our end of year class party. It has been a pleasure to get to know all of the Room 10 students, parents and families this year and I feel very lucky to have worked with such a great class. The staff working with your child this term are: Sarah Whelan (Class teacher) Stephanie Ryan (Health and PE) Georgia Yates (Music and Drama) Kylie Neilson (Auslan) Homework Students will continue to bring home a new homework contract each fortnight, which supports the work we do at school. If your child should finish the set tasks early, please encourage him/her to access Studyladder activities for 10 minutes per night instead. English Spelling Our weekly spelling lists are comprised of words based on the Sound Waves spelling program, which focuses on synthetic phonics. Students will also be given a challengeword each week to stretch their spelling skills. Reading Students will develop their reading and comprehension skills through shared reading experiences with both fiction and non-fiction texts and through guided reading activities. Writing and grammar Our grammar lessons will be centred around punctuation and sentence structure. These elements will be incorporated into studentswriting as they focus on poetry, informative and procedural writing this term. Technologies We will focus on digital technologies this term and learn to code using both Spheros and Ozobots. Students will also learn about Maker’s Empire and 3D printing. Health and Physical Education - Mrs Ryan

Wow! Term 4 is already here and it’s going to be a busy one in Health and PE! We have our Sports Day on Friday of week 2 (25th of October) so we will be getting ready for that in the first 2 weeks of term. We will be practising for our events as well as discussing different techniques and strategies to use to be as successful as we can on the day. Children have been allocated teams already, so if you are unsure of your child’s team, please speak to their class teacher. We would love to see parents and friends coming to cheer and celebrate on the day. We will also be learning about striking sports, including cricket and badminton and focusing on some fundamental skills, like hand/eye coordination. In Health we will be covering more safety topics, including Road Safety and learning more about our bodies. I look forward to a fun, busy and productive term 4.

Music and Drama - Ms Yates This term in music, students will continue working with the Music Count Us In song ready to perform in Week 4. Early in the term, students will continue participating in the Recorder Karate program. They will be working in small groups to develop the skills required to earn belts. Later in the term, we will focus on folk dance and learning dances from other cultures.

If your child has their own recorder, please make sure they have it at school on Friday for lessons.

In drama, students will be focusing on improvisation. They will participate in a range of games and tasks to explore the concept. Auslan - Mrs Neilson During Term 4 the students will be reviewing Colour & Number, and using them in relation to the new vocabulary of “Sport and Games” and “celebrations”. This will be delivered through sign games, songs, video and the use of IT equipment.

Handwriting Students enjoyed learning the cursive alphabet last term. This term we will review the letter formations and practise linking our letters to form cursive words. Oral language We will continue with our sharing program this term, wherein students will talk to the class once per week for a few minutes. Please see the weekly sharing topics and roster on the next page, which you can cut out and keep for future reference. Mathematics Money and time will be our main focus areas in Maths this term. Students will also continue to develop their understanding of number through the Big Ideas in Number program and Natural Maths. They will practise addition, subtraction, division and multiplication strategies. Science Students loved learning about the Earth, moon and sun last term during Science. Each Wednesday afternoon, students will continue to work in The Hive, together with other year 3 students from rooms 7 and 28. Our learning this term will be centered around heat and its affect on different substances. We will also revise some of the key points from our Term 3 program to make sure that students have a good understanding of day, night and the seasons. HASS (Humanities and Social Sciences) and Visual Arts Last term students researched convicts, the First Fleet and colonisation’s devastating impact on Aboriginal people. This term in HASS, we are all very excited to be learning about celebrations and commemorations from around the world. Students will learn about the history and culture of a different occasion each week. Our art lessons will tie in with our HASS program this term as we make a variety of crafts to match the celebration or commemoration of the week. Here are a few picture clues – can you guess some of the special occasions we will be learning about?
