Colin Hall
Mr President 2013
President’s Day – Sunday 25th August 2013
It was with a significant degree of trepidation that the 42 couples entered in this year’s
competition approached the first tee for the President’s Day Mixed Event. After many years
of playing a Greensome, the clock was turned back to a time when golf club Presidents were
the elder statesmen of the club with stern expressions and white beards – a bit like this year
really!
Colin Hall had decided that he wished to revert to the more traditional Foursome form of the
game, played from the first tee with gentlemen driving at the odd numbered holes, and ladies
at the evens.
Champagne was available as the President welcomed competitors to the first tee, where
Mike Bury acted as Starter. The champagne received a mixed reception – particularly from
ladies whose partners had partaken and then knocked the tee shot into a difficult position.
Four gentlemen suffered the indignity of hitting out of bounds, with the resultant second ball
being played by the lady from the white tee. “What – from here?” was heard from one lady.
I played with my usual President’s day partner, Alison Reed, with Janet Worthington and
Steve Harrison making up our group. Alison and I were proud of the fact that, even with the
difficult format, we only had two sixes in our round. Unfortunately though, they were
accompanied by three sevens, three eights and two nines. Steve Harrison invented a new
word – shankathon – as we made our way round the eleventh green. Foursome is definitely
a format of the game for golfers who play regularly together and know each other’s strengths
and weaknesses.
However, the weather held fair for the day, and the golf course was in fine fettle, despite
some particularly difficult pin positions. The Foursome format certainly suited some of the
players with Peter Milnes and Pam Cunnington returning an excellent 84-17=67 to win the
first prize. In his acceptance speech, Peter, who is of course the Greens Director, remarked
that the course was “set up very well.”
Pam Cunnington, Mr President and Peter Milnes,
Winners with a nett 67
Garry Hall and Carolyn (What - from here?) Brinsley came in with 91-22=69 for second place,
and Mr Captain and Lady Captain were third with 84-14=70.
Mike Murray and Diane Houghton won the best gross with 82 after a card play-off with Mark
Kitchen and Denise Booth.
2nd: Garry Hall and Carolyn Brinsley with nett 69
3rd: Mr Captain and Lady Captain with nett 70
The President was delighted to welcome
Past President Barney Kelly and
Past Lady Captain Joan Kelly
when they joined him for a glass of
Champagne on his special day.
After a splendid meal, the President took to the floor for the
presentation, and in an emotional speech thanked all the
members and staff who had contributed to making such a
memorable day. He noted that it is the only day during his
42 years of membership that he has been at the club and not
hit a single bad shot.

President’s prize to the men, Saturday, 24th August 2013
Winner: Graham Nuttall 42 pts
3rd Peter Milnes 40 pts 2nd Graham Couser 41 pts
No champagne from the President for the gentlemen on Saturday, and drizzle threatened to
sabotage some scores, but the above three gentlemen obviously didn’t feel a thing and loved
the course to bits judging by the scores. Peter Milnes had a brilliant weekend—docked a shot
after his score on Saturday and still won on Sunday, with a lot of help from Pam of course.
The President’s prize to the men will be presented at the annual presentation evening so the
winners will just have to grit their teeth and contain their excitement. Graeme Nuttall has
already given his apologies for absence that night but his son Richard will attend on his behalf
to accept the prize. Lovely.

St Anne’s Hospice Fashion Show
On Friday 12th July RGC hosted a fashion show in aid of the St Ann’s Hospice shop, Romiley.
A comprehensive range of fashion and everyday garments, all donated free to the Hospice,
were beautifully and elegantly modelled by members of the Hospice shop staff and our own
Maureen, Kim and Jade.
Over 130 guests attended, which was way above expectations. Judith Howcroft managed to
overcome her natural shyness to act as compere for the night. Esme, the Hospice shop
manageress, organised the quick changes for the models, and her husband Greg arranged the
sound system.
All the items modelled plus extra back-up stock were available for sale at the end of the show.
There were lots of smiling faces clutching designer label dresses and tops bought at amazingly
low prices.
There was also a raffle, and a “new goods” stall, all items kindly donated by manufacturers
and local businesses.
A fantastic £1,525 was raised on the night, all of which goes direct to the Hospice.
Esme would like to thank all at RGC who supported the event, in particular Heather and the
girls.
The success of this latest event has prompted us to look at a repeat “Glitz and Glamour”
Fashion Show later in the year, in time to refresh your wardrobe for Christmas and New Year.
Watch the notice boards for details.

Ladies’ Presentation Evening, 8th August
The Rose Bowl, 8th August 2013
2nd: Kathryn Pendleton, 88-17=71
The last major of the season - can you
believe it’s nearly over! - took place on
yet another sunny day, in fact near perfect
conditions, on our wonderful course.
Mr Captain was a guest of Lady Captain
for the meal and admirably entertained
the ladies, both during the meal and when
he presented his prizes to the ladies.
None of the ladies can remember in the
past that any Lady Captain has ever won
Mr Captain’s prize but, records are there
to be broken and a very excited Francine
was pleased to have done it with a super
score of nett 66. Lady Captain wins Mr Captain’s Prize to the ladies
Lady Captain and the winner, Irene Barrow, 87-18=69
3rd: Janet Worthington, 101-28=73
Lady Captain’s excitement at winning was
equalled, if not exceeded, by Irene Barrow who
won the Rose Bowl with a brilliant nett 69.
Irene commented: “Recently I’ve been
disappointed because my handicap has steadily
been going up so I’m really pleased to have
reduced, won a Major, the Eaton Vets, the
EWGA medal and put my name on a board, all
at the same time.”
Some fabulous scores are being carded this
summer with the run on the ball and the lovely
condition of the greens.
Romiley Vets v Mellor Vets … 09.08.13
A little light drizzle was not enough to dampen the enthusiasm of the teams assembled for this
local derby, especially as it cleared away quickly to give another pleasant morning. All were
agreed that the course was in superb condition.
It’s always handy to have a maths teacher (even a vintage model) handy
when the handicaps need sorting-out.
It would seem that some of the visitors suffered a little from conditions in the oxygen-rich lower
levels as scores of 8 & 6, 6 & 5, 5&4 in favour of the home team were registered, but enough of
them rallied to make a close match of it, the final result being 4 v 3 to Romiley, with one match
halved.
And so the juggernaut rumbles on - only one defeat so far this season!

John Glynn
One might well ask why David Mason should
decide to trek 25 and a half miles across country
and climbing Pen-Y-Ghent, Whernside and
Ingleborough (over 2100 metres in total). He has
not enjoyed the best of health in the last few years
but he did it in just 11 hours, in far from convivial
weather, and is now the possessor of a medal to
prove it.
David is thrilled that he has raised about £1,200 for
the Alzheimer’s Society and thanks all contributors
for their help.
If you are puzzled by the scenery in David’s
picture, this could be because it was taken when he
was training in Abergavenny!

LOTTERY DRAW
SATURDAY, 17th AUGUST 2013
Winning numbers drawn out by Mr Captain
1st Prize: Phil Barwick, £72 2nd Prize: Martyn Wilson, £43.20 3rd Prize: Jen Higgins, £28.80
Phil Barwick had just left the club so no-one witnessed his excitement, but Martyn Wilson
could hardly believe his luck and members present could be forgiven for thinking that he had
actually won the town hall clock. Geoff Higgins was delighted to have won, until he found
that the cheque was made out to his wife. Geoff was thinking of taking Jen out to celebrate but
then decided he would have to ask Jen what she wanted to do with her winnings.
Never too late
It’s easy to enter the draw. Just write your name on a little brown envelope, put £5 inside and
place it in the white lottery box at the side of the social notice board in the main bar, or
download a copy of the standing order form from the Club website.

You must be in it to win it,

Over the hills and far away at Nelson, Ladies’ Exchange Day, 22nd August 2013
The welcome the ladies received at Nelson could not have been warmer, beginning with a meet and greet of
the coach by the secretary, Richard, in the car park and directions for the safest place to leave the clubs and
then a short speech whilst we ate a lovely breakfast. Richard had done his homework too. He had been on
the Romiley website and howdidido and looked at recent scores. He identified Lady Captain and Audrey
after their recent wins but in the end he said he would put his money on Jane because of her consistency.
Looking at the prize winners, if he had been able to actually have his bet he would have made a profit.
The ladies left Romiley and headed north with some concern about the hilly terrain but were very pleasantly
surprised by everything, no mountains to climb, great greens, lovely wide fairways and, of course, the
fabulous views from every hole—with, thankfully, no sign of the witches of Pendle Hill. The first green
proved to be elusive for some ladies but what a super green it was, once found, on the RIGHT of the trees,
over the brow of the hill and in a big hole!
The format was a team of three, two scores to count, with phantom cards for the two balls, and someone did
a great job at picking the phantoms because the two teams who must have set out thinking they didn't have
a chance actually came second and third, with phantom Lady Vice Captain being the only team member
present to accept the prize for the two ball in which she hadn’t played because Gill and Maureen couldn’t
stay for the meal.
Many thanks to Nelson for their hospitality, for wonderful food and thank you to Richard for presenting
Lady Captain with a copy of their Centenary Book.
Winners of the Trippers’ Trophy, Frances West,
Lynn Nuttall and Audrey Jones with 78 points.
Phantom Lady Vice Captain, Anne Harrison,
accepting 2nd prize for Gill Walker, Maureen
Codling with 77 points.
Glynis Hunt and Pam Cunnington with phantom
Lady Captain, 3rd after cpo with Lynn Schofield,
Pauline Walker and Jane Hawke.

Gloomy skies greeted the early arrivals for the
latest seniors match but, any fears of a repeat of the
torrential downpour which signalled the
cancellation of last year’s corresponding fixture
were soon dispelled as the clouds lifted and the sun
broke through to give another lovely morning.
A series of closely fought but, sadly from a
reporter’s point of view, apparently incident-free
games ensued. There were one or two noteworthy
incidents, however. Joergen Frederiksen and Eric
Jones experienced unspecified ball-confusion on
the seventh which contributed to their losing the
hole, although they rallied to win the match.
Organisational confusion on the part of
Disley resulted in ‘Stan’ having to play on
his own against Bill Swindells and Peter
Howcroft … and a very good job he made of
it too, taking the match to the last hole
despite giving away 11 shots in total. Stan
also spoke for the visitors after the meal,
lavishing praise on the course. No doubt the
visiting party from Poynton Presbyterians
would endorse his view.
After a very welcome meal of cottage pie
followed by apple flan & custard, the usual
brief speeches rounded off the day. Peter
Howcroft, deputising at short notice, spoke
on behalf of Romiley, finishing with a short

joke which, unusually for Peter, didn’t mention hydrogen at all (I’m positive!). Despite the
closeness of some matches, the result went Romiley’s way by the impressive score of 8 v 1, so
this year’s good form continues.

The Evening Mixed – Saturday 3rd August 2013.
A warm and sunny evening saw a good turnout with some new faces joining in for the first time. The
competition over nine holes saw the re-emergence of the dreaded dice!! All tee off, each player
numbered from 1 to 4, and then throw the dice. If the dice comes up with nos. 1-4, that’s whose drive
you take, 5 and 6 means throw again. We gave our dice to the wonderful Pam who managed to roll it at
least 5 times before it actually came up with a number other than 5 or 6! We’ve all heard the
expression “damned with faint praise.” Garry Hall’s comment to his playing partner, Carolyn Brinsley
going down as a perfect example– “You’re better than I thought you’d be.”
We all had a lovely evening’s golf and then had a couple of drinks before going downstairs for a meal.
As usual the food and service were excellent.
In second place were myself, Chris Broster and Pam Cunnington with Mr Captain and Rachel, pipped
at the post for first place by Derek and Janet Worthington with Trevor and Isabel Wright.

Ladies’ Handicap B and Plate Team
Our Romiley ladies’ teams have had a happy year of golf with mostly good weather, except for the last
handicap match which we won in rain, sleet, thunder and lightning (in the distance!). Thank you, girls.
The Plate team came second in their group, playing Bramhall, Dunham, Northenden and Stockport,
short distances from the home club and excellent venues.
Result: Won 4, lost 3, halved 1.
Our Handicap team played Davenport, Hazel, Grove, Mellor and Northenden.
Result: Won 4, lost 2, halved 2, winning their group but, disappointingly, losing to Lymm in the quarter
finals after a valiant effort at neutral venue Withington Golf Club.
Barbara Leith, Jill Woolstencroft, Irene Barrow, Sandra Hewitt, Janet Godfrey,
Liz Wilde and Anne Ludford, the Handicap Team obviously enjoying themselves at Withington
One would think that, having thirty available players under 30 handicap, it would be easy to field two
teams; not so! There is a core of five players for each team, plus the three musketeers, all of whom are
the best of sports, and we have represented Romiley to the best of our ability, but, there are ladies out
there who are missing the fun! It’s not winning or losing but playing the game that counts. The teams
are open to any member under 30 handicap so please put your name forward and come and join us at
these lovely courses.
Needless to say, we have the best match teas in Cheshire, thanks to Heather and her girls, and we have a
course in immaculate condition, thanks to our greens staff, but my biggest thank you goes to our teams
for all their support throughout the summer.
“Play up, play up and play the game.”

Inspection of Course Architect’s Work by his Grandson
On Tuesday 27th August, at the reception desk for the 2nd Senior Men’s Open, one of the
competitors introduced himself as E R “Ted” Williams, the grandson of the course designer
T G “Tom” Renouf, English International golfer, golf course architect and Professional at
Manchester Golf Club.
RGC started as Woodley and Romiley Golf Club near the junction of Werneth Road and
Werneth Low Road in 1897. In 1905 it moved to Goosehouse Green with a 9 hole course
and became known as Romiley Golf Club. In 1925, after the acquisition of land on the other
side of Heys Lane, Tom was engaged to survey the land and supply a sketch of the layout.
Tom’s design was adopted by the Club and the present 18 hole course was built and opened
in October 1926. A copy of the Tom’s letter to the Club and the layout sketch can be found
in the Centenary Book.
Ted entertained the reception desk members for quite a while with tales of his grandfather.
Ted especially remembers that his grandfather was a particularly fine golfer but a rather poor
putter. As a boy Ted remembers putting competitions with his grandfather and grandfather
being very upset indeed when Ted beat him. Unfortunately for Ted, Tom died before Ted
started to play golf so he missed out on what would have been excellent tuition, in the long
game at least.
Ted was delighted to see the Centenary Book and, after his “inspection” and enthusiastic
approval of our maintenance and improvement of the course, a copy of the book was
presented to him by Vice Captain Andy Reed, RGC Secretary Charles Haworth and Men’s
Open Organiser, Mike Bury.
But the story is not yet over. David Mason is also related to Tom Renouf so he and Ted have
another tale to tell….. and it turns out that Ted was a colleague of Neville Frost at ‘The
Bank’......
It really is a small world!

Vets at Davenport, 30th September 2013
On a fine, late August day, the Vets’ team of 16 players visited Davenport for their annual
away fixture.
Results on the day saw a 5-3 victory for Romiley,
with 3 wins and 1 loss with 4 of the matches
halved.
One notable half was the pairing of Mike Wilson
and Paul Trafford who recovered from 3 down
after 9, including a 40 foot putt by Mike.
Both teams were served an excellent fish and chip
lunch with chocolate gateau to follow.

3rd Successful Corporate Sponsors’ Day
Tuesday 20th August 2013.
On a fine, sunny morning Romiley Golf Club welcomed their Sponsors to the 3rd competition for their
Cup. 24 pairs filled the starting sheet and a two tee start ensured that everyone was away by 10 am.
The Club has four new sponsors this year, The Foresters Arms, T. N. Robinson, Federation of First Aid
Training Organisations and C.P.M. Design and Build, and all of them accepted the invitation to play in
what is becoming a popular annual event.
The format was a two ball better ball Stableford and the winners were C & C Insurance Brokers
represented by Wayne Andrew and John Mitten with a tremendous 45 points. Wayne, playing off 19,
secured their first place by parring the 9th, their last hole, for 4 points. They were closely followed by
the Moorcroft Group with Ken Cooper and Phil Roberts with 43, obviously using their course
knowledge, and in third place was the Foresters’ team, Paul Reyner and Mark Kitchen with 42 points.
Nearest the pin prizes went to Phil Smeathers of Leama Cars, Steve Bridgeman of T.N.Robinson, Ron
Harrison of Mercury Finance and Peter Milnes of the Moorcroft Group. There were prizes for the
longest drive at 17th for ladies and gentlemen. There wasn’t much doubt that the one lady playing,
Libby Smeathers, would land her drive on the fairway, and Paul Butler of Brown Shipley won longest
drive for the men.
After an excellent lunch, with much talk of golf rather than business, the Chairman, Neil McRoberts,
presented the Cup and prizes. The Chairman thanked all the sponsors for their continued support and
said he would try his best to arrange another sunny day next year.
The Chairman expressed thanks also to Mike Cope and Mike Bury the starters, and Murray Padkin on
the reception desk and organiser.

“Ladies’ Stableford, Hole in 2 final and Annette’s Nine, 29th August 2013
So many competitions on the same day, but it all makes sense when each one is explained.
The Hole in 2 final is for any lady who entered the competition after last year’s hole in two final
and has had a 2. The Stableford is for those ladies and also the ladies who didn’t have a 2.
Annette’s trophy is played just on the back nine so that the nine hole ladies are included, and
the trophy has kindly been donated by Barry Broadhurst. The silverware that is played for
throughout the year is presented to the winner at the presentation evenings but then has to be
returned to the display cabinet, but Annette’s trophy can be taken home for the winner to

Romiley GC vs Disley GC
Dunham Forest Trophy Quarter Finals
Friday 30th August 2013
What a fine win by our club, 5-2, over a young, but strong, Disley team.
With clouds glowering, a gathering wind and not the best of light, the 60 plus spectators
around the course were treated to a tense match. Our captain, Mark Jones, had a good win
over the reigning Cheshire champion, James McCormick.
Disley started by winning the first two matches but that was the last of their success as the
rest of the team gained a significant advantage by the 14th hole. Alex White, our
professional, was not to know that the match was won as he approached the 14th and was 4
up. He was surprised to see all the team and spectators gathered near the 15th green. Alex
duly put his shot about 4 foot from the pin and as the Disley pro approached the green he
formally conceded. Joy unbounded! Mark Worsley tried not to gloat too much as his brother
was playing for Disley.
And so the team can look forward to a day of 36 holes when the semis and final are played at
Dunham on Saturday, 21st September, 2013. They would love as much support as we can
give them.

The Evening Mixed Saturday 31st August 2013
The last evening mixed of the season saw a cracking turnout with over 40 players taking part.
The weather was fine, if a little cooler than of late. However, the heat of battle soon warmed us
all up.
The format was a Stableford with two to score on the par 4’s and 5’s and all on the par 3’s, plus
the dreaded yellow ball. Copious instructions were handed out, plus a numbered yellow ball
which was to be returned after playing. The scoring method took a little while to sink in but,
after a light bulb moment and the realisation that “aggregate” meant adding the two scores and
the yellow ball together, it turned out to be a really fun competition. Unfortunately, though, the
pressure and magnetism of the pond on the 2nd was too much for one player and that was the
end of the yellow score and the competition for them.
The following two sentences appear every time I write up the evening mixed, and I see no
reason to depart from that habit at this stage in the year:
1. After a fantastically enjoyable game we all made our way up to the bar for a well earned
drink (or two).
2. Then we retired to the downstairs lounge for a lovely meal served by Heather’s wonderful
girls.
Once the dessert had been served, (cheese and biscuits or trifle, I had both!!) Mr Shaun Slate
rose to thank those who had helped to organise the event and also thanked Heather for another
delicious meal. He then went on to announce the winners but before he did so he congratulated
the team in third place – Mr. Vice and Alison with Derek and Janet Worthington who had an
amazing score of 60 points but didn’t actually win anything, which I thought was rather amusing
if a bit cruel. In second place on count back, also with 60 points, were Irene and Bill Barrow
with Steve and Heather Denton, but the winners with an incredible 61 points were Alan Martin,
Barbara Leith and Angela and Shaun Slate. Well done!
Unfortunately Al was unable to stay for the meal, so he isn’t in the photo with the rest of his
victorious team.
This year’s evening mixed events have been an unqualified success and I, for one, can’t wait for
next year’s. Thank you Shaun. You did a great job.

The Blues’ Overwhelming Victory
Derby Day, Sunday 1st September 2013
43 members and guests rose early from their beds to dress in the team colour of choice, arrive
at the golf club and find their allocated tee in time for a 9 am shotgun start.
The format was a 4BBB match play, but all matches had to complete 18 holes. Most knew
which team they wanted to support, but there was a little jiggery pokery and changing of sides
to make up the numbers. The Captain, a through and through red, changed to blue for the
occasion, drafted in a lady guest (5 hcap!) and won his match against Ken Cooper and Denise
Booth, 2 up much to the amusement of the blues’ team captain, Peter Wagstaff, who
unfortunately couldn’t play this year because of his recent health problems. Mr Vice Captain
Andy, who has no particular affiliation, adopted a blue shirt for the day but, even encouraged
by his definitely blue partner Karen Hooley, failed to beat Barry Leech and John Nolan. Man
of the match was David Wilson for City who singlehandedly beat Steve Cleary and Lee
Prendergast, 7 up!
Peter attended to see everyone off and returned for the presentation, and for brunch, which
everyone needed to warm them up after the coldest day for many a week.
There was no doubt which side won. The blues were 6 matches up and the reds only 3. Even
on a calculation hole for hole the result was still 28 to 12 for the blues, and Peter Wagstaff
“graciously” accepted the presentation of the trophy by the Captain who told Peter that he had
played very well.
Victorious Peter Wagstaff
but why is that red and white ribbon on the cup?
President’s Prize to the Juniors, Sunday, 11th August 2013
This Stableford competition was held on Sunday 11th August. The weather was fine and playing
conditions superb.
After 9 holes all the competitors were within 3 or 4 shots of each other, then Jordan Walton
decided to put away his driver which had been causing him some problems and played off the
remaining tees with a 4 iron. After 11 holes, although of course he didn’t know it, he was lying
3rd. Amazingly, he then scored 3 points on each of the remaining holes to return a very creditable
winning score of 36 points. Toby Sinclair was second and Reece Chesworth 3rd.
The trophy was presented to Jordan by the Club President, Colin Hall.

Captain’s Prize to the Juniors, 7th July 2013
The “Captain’s Prize” to the juniors competition was held on 7th July. This year there were

“The Andrew Cup” – “Vice Captain’s Summer Challenge”
This competition, which was an initiative of our Club Vice Captain Andy Reed, has been a
great success. Five 9 hole Medal Competitions were held on Tuesdays during the school
holidays, with the best three nett scores deciding the winner. Overall 13 juniors took part.
The results were:
1st Jordan Walton with 39+35+30 = 104.
He showed a very consistent improvement and recorded a nett 30 having had his handicap
reduced from 30 to 28.
2nd Tom Swarbrick with 34+43+39 = 116.
Tom started superbly and, although he was unable to repeat his score from the opening
competition, he did very well.
3rd Toby Sinclair with a net 34+41+43 = 118.
Toby also started superbly but just missed out on the prizes.
Note on the trophy – The Andrew Trophy was presented in 1990 by the late George Andrew,
who was a Past Captain of the Club, to be competed for annually by members of the Junior
Section. Regretfully, the trophy was only used once and was then mislaid until it was found
recently in a cupboard at the Club. It has now been resurrected as a prestigious trophy and
will be competed for each summer holiday as the “Vice Captain’s Summer Challenge”.
It’s great to see a resurgence of the Junior Section.

The McRoberts Trophy for Juniors, Friday, 30th August 2013

Thanks to our Chairman, Neil McRoberts, a new
trophy was played for by the Juniors. It was an
18 hole competition with a Stableford format.
The winner was Sam Ashworth Jones, 14
handicap, who was way out in front with a
magnificent 40 points. His lovely, easy swing is
reminiscent of his granddad’s, Roger Ashworth.
Aaron Chesworth just beat Joe Mulhearn into
2nd place with a card play off, both on 32 pts.
Harry Doyle and Alex Jones did not enjoy the
front 9 but both scored 19 pts for the back 9.
It was great to see so many Juniors revelling in
the golf.
