Tradition says that on December the 6th - Saint Nicholas Day - is one of the most important festivals of the year, especially for children. On the evening of the 5th of December, boots are being happily polished in every home. People usually put boots near entrance door, waiting for presents. He puts a little present into every one's boots. For naughty children, Saint Nick can bring a stick and nothing else.

Christmas Eve brings us inside houses a Christmas tree. It used to be natural, but now, year after year the ecological trees are more used. We decorate fir trees with Christmas balls, angels, tinsel, sweets and chocolates.

THE CAROLING Traditionally, during first hours after dark on Christmas’ Eve is time for children to go caroling and adults stay home to greet them. As they go caroling from house to house, children receive treats like candy, fruit, baked treats and sometimes even money in appreciation of their performance and as a sign of holiday good will.

THE EPIPHANY

One of the most important religious holidays is the Epiphany. This holiday marks the day when Jesus was baptized in the Jordan river by John the Baptist.

The celebration starts on the eve of the Epiphany, on January 5, when the priests across all Orthodox churches begin to bless the waters. The holy water (agheasma in Romanian) is then given to the people on the Epiphany day, after the religious mass. The believers use the agheasma to bless their houses, goods, and animals, as it is believed that this blessed water has miraculous powers and protects them. They also drink the water every morning, usually before eating, before January 6 and January 14.

Page 20: Romanian celebrations 2015

Some of the religious ceremonies usually take place near large bodies of water, such as rivers or the sea. After the priests bless the waters, they throw wood crosses into the cold water and young men go in their search. It is believed that the one who finds the cross and brings it back to shore will get purified of all sins and will have good luck the entire year.

In some of Romania’s regions, the priests also bless the horses with holy water, in a ritual called the Baptism of Horses

Dragobete is a traditional Romanian holiday celebrated on February 24. Dragobete is the day when people celebrate love (same as Valentine’s Day). The day is particularly known as "the day when the birds are betrothed". It is around this time that the birds begin to build their nests and mate. On this day, considered locally the first day of spring, boys and girls gather vernal flowers and sing together to Dragobete.

1ST OF MARCH

Page 23: Romanian celebrations 2015

On the first of March Romanians celebrate a specific holiday called "Martisor", the triumph of spring over winter. On this occasion they offer an object tied with a white and red cord as a symbol of time's renewal and the rebirth of nature. In the past this symbol was just a cord made up of two white and red strings representing the unity of contrasting items: summer and winter, warmth and cold, light and dark.

Page 24: Romanian celebrations 2015

This cord used to be either tied around one's wrist or worn over one's clothes in the chest all around the month of March. Then it would be tied around a rose or a blossomed tree for good luck. Nowadays, the value of this symbol is given by the artistic craftwork. The object tied with a white and red cord can be made of anything.

Page 25: Romanian celebrations 2015

It is offered to women and girls to wear it all through the month of March, as a sign of spring's arrival. And the string means red love for all that is beautiful white symbolizes purity health and the snowdrop, the first flower of spring.

1ST OF APRIL

APRIL’S FOOL

It started celebrating in the 19th century. All day long people like playing jokes on one another. One of the superstitions here says that a joke has to be played before noon, otherwise it will bring bad luck. It is also said that if you do not play a joke on somebody on 1 April, you will be the one who is going to be fooled the whole year.

CONSTANTA CITY CELEBRATION21ST OF MAY

This day coincides with the Orthodox feast of Saints Constantine and Helen. The Byzantine Emperor Constantine I was the one who decided the expansion of the Greek origin settlement of Tomis with the new city of Constantiana. Cultural and artistic, historical and religious events dedicated to the celebration of the new town were first held in May 2002.

FAIRIES’ DAY (SANZIENELE/ DRAGAICA)

‘Sanzienele’ is a Romanian tradition with pre-christian roots which is celebrated on June 24. It is a midsummer tradition which celebrates nature and fecundity. The word “sanziene” is also used for a plant with golden flowers, which are gathered into wreaths and placed in the house to protect the house and its inhabitants from evil spirits. The legend goes that Sanzienele are young girls who give their magical powers to flowers and herbs during this period. During this time, young women can find their destined one – if they put the sanziene flowers under their pillow during the night before the holiday, they will dream their future husband, the tradition goes. In more traditional romanian villages, young girls are dancing hora dragaicelor. Hora is a traditional folk dance that gathers everyone into a big, closed circle, with all dancers holding hands.

INTERNATIONAL DAY OF THE TRADITIONAL ROMANIAN BLOUSE (IA)

The form and ornametics of the contemporary garments preserved a part of the language of signs and symbols specific to the mythical thinking of those times. Thus, the first testimonies about Romanian traditional port are set in stone, on Tropaeum Traiani monument in Adamclisi (Constanta County) and Trajan's Column in Rome. For example, women portraits carved on Trajan's Column after the Dacian wars provide information about their clothing. Dacian women wore shirts rippled at the neck related to the Romanian ie. Sleeves were either long and wide or short. The dress was long to the ground, over which sometimes was attached a wide draped mantle. In the feet they wore leather sandals in summer and fur sandals in winter.
