Gospel Reading: Luke 2:22-40 Today’s Gospel describes the presentation of the child Jesus in the Temple and shows Joseph and Mary as de-vout Jews, following the prescriptions of the Law of Moses. The Gospel alludes to several aspects of the Law of Mo-ses: circumcision, the dedication of the firstborn son to the Lord, and the purification of a woman after childbirth.
According to the Law of Moses as presented in the Book of Leviticus, a woman was considered ritually unclean during her menstrual period and for a prescribed period of time following the birth of a child. After the birth of a son, a woman was considered ritually unclean for 40 days. After the birth of a daughter, a woman was considered unclean for 80 days. In order to be restored to ritual purity, a Jew-ish woman performed the appropriate rites of purification and made the prescribed ritual offering.
Today’s Gospel notes that Jesus was circumcised on the eighth day after his birth, in accordance with the Mosaic Law. At that time, he was called Jesus, the name he was given by the angel Gabriel. On the 40th day after Jesus’ birth, Mary performed the appropriate purification rites and made her offering at the Temple. Although the Law of Moses required an offering of a lamb, those who could not afford a lamb could substitute two turtledoves or two pi-geons. In this scene, Luke identifies Joseph and Mary as being poor, and indeed throughout Luke’s Gospel, Jesus will show special concern for the poor.
Another Jewish rite referenced in this Gospel is the dedica-tion of the firstborn son to the Lord. In remembrance of the feast of Passover, when the firstborn children of the Israelites in Egypt were saved from death, the Law of Mo-ses prescribed that all firstborn males of Israel should be consecrated to the Lord. In this tradition, Mary and Joseph present the infant Jesus in the Temple in Jerusalem.
In Jerusalem, Luke reports that Mary and Joseph encoun-ter two devout Jews, Simeon and Anna, who recognize the infant Jesus as the fulfillment of Israel’s hope for redemp-tion. In Simeon’s words we find a prediction of Mary’s wit-nessing of Jesus’ death on the cross.

St. Thomas the Apostle Mission Statement The Roman Catholic faith community of St. Thomas the Apos-tle recognizes God’s call to be a sign of His Kingdom in the communities we serve. We respond to this call by:
Leading people to a deeper relationship with Christ by providing opportunities for spiritual growth, renewal, educa-tion, the celebration of the Sacraments, and the worship of God in the sacred liturgy;
Encouraging a commitment to justice and to service of those in need;
Promoting good stewardship of our time, talent and treasure;
Building a community of hospitality and support in the daily living out of Christian ideals by nourishing mutual respect and understanding within our Church, our families, our com-munity, and other faith traditions .
U.S. Bishop Chairmen for Pro-Life and Doctrine Address Ethical Concerns on the New COVID-19 Vaccines
WASHINGTON– On December 14, Bishop Kevin C. Rhoades of Fort Wayne-South Bend, chairman of the U.S. Conference of Cath-olic Bishops’ (USCCB) Committee on Doctrine, and Archbishop Joseph F. Naumann of Kansas City in Kansas, chairman of the USCCB’s Committee on Pro-Life Activities, issued a statement on the new COVID-19 vaccines. In their statement, the bishops ad-dress the moral concerns raised by the fact that the three vaccines that appear to be ready for distribution in the United States all have some connection to cell lines that originated with tissue taken from abortions.
With regard to the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines, they concluded:
“In view of the gravity of the current pandemic and the lack of availability of alternative vaccines, the reasons to accept the new COVID-19 vaccines from Pfizer and Moderna are sufficiently serious to justify their use, despite their remote connection to moral-ly compromised cell lines.
“Receiving one of the COVID-19 vaccines ought to be understood as an act of charity toward the other members of our communi-ty. In this way, being vaccinated safely against COVID-19 should be considered an act of love of our neighbor and part of our moral responsibility for the common good.”
With regard to the AstraZeneca vaccine, the bishops found it to be “more morally compromised” and consequently concluded that this vaccine “should be avoided” if there are alternatives available. “It may turn out, however, that one does not really have a choice of vaccine, at least, not without a lengthy delay in immunization that may have serious consequences for one’s health and the health of others,” the bishop chairmen stated. “In such a case … it would be permissible to accept the AstraZeneca vaccine.”
At the same time, the bishops also warned that Catholics “must be on guard so that the new COVID-19 vaccines do not desensitize us or weaken our determination to oppose the evil of abortion itself and the subsequent use of fetal cells in research.”

Living the 3 T’s What shall I return to the Lord for all His goodness to me? (psalm 116: 12)
Now is a good time to rejoice in what the Lord has done for each of us, and to look back at what we have done and given back to Him and His / Our Church.
It is also a very good time to recommit to being more generous by sharing our Time, Talent and Treasure for the Lord and others.

O Lord, for those of us who have not yet been made ill by the ever-present virus, we are tempted to feel like we are doing all things right and perhaps the virus will pass over us like the plagues passed over the Israelites and only felled the Egyptians. But we know better. This virus is no respecter of persons. It has no boundaries. We have no natural defenses. We are all at risk. So, Lord of Life, we ask you to stay near us for better and for worse, in sickness and in health, and may not even death part us from you. Amen
The Prayer Shawl Ministry would like to remind our Parishioners that we have lap robes and shawls for you to give to a loved one going through a difficult time. When we give a shawl /lap robe our mission is to provide you with prayers, warmth and comfort, to share your pain, sorrow, or your joy and to remind you that you are never alone. To request a shawl/lap robe please call Betsy @ 973 893-2441 or [email protected] and one will be given to you. The Prayer Shawl Ministry is in need of new members who knit or crochet and would like to share their talent with our ministry. At this time, we all work from home. Please call above for information. Our ministry mainly provides baby blankets to our newly Baptized, lap robes & shawls for those in need. Let us continue to pray for those making shawls and those who receive them. Donations and gift cards to Michaels and yarn are always welcome and ap-preciated to be able to continue with our shawls, lap robes and baby blankets.

Gospel Reading Luke 2:22-40
Mary and Joseph present Jesus at the Temple in accordance with the Law of Moses.
Feast of the Holy Family Family Connection Today’s celebration of the Feast of the Holy Family highlights the importance of family in our religious life. We know that Mary and Joseph’s faithfulness to God enabled them to cooper-ate in God’s plan for our salvation by accepting the responsibil-ity to raise God’s Son, Jesus. From his parents, Jesus learned how to be a faithful believer in his Jewish tradition. Simeon’s prophecy about Mary’s sorrow alerts us to the importance of a family’s commitment to one another, a commitment that is ex-pressed in both good times and bad.
Gather as a family and recall times when your family showed its commitment to one another in good times and in bad. Recall times when your immediate family was supported by members of your extend-ed family. Note that today we celebrate the Feast of the Holy Family, and we see in the family of Jesus an example for our own family life. Read together today’s Gospel, Luke 2:22-40. Joseph and Mary ex-pressed their faithfulness to God through their observance of the Law of Moses. Simeon prophesied the grief that Mary would experience at the foot of Jesus’ cross. One of the blessings of family life is our commitment to one another, sharing good times and supporting one another through difficult times. Conclude in prayer together thanking God for the grace expressed in your family’s commitment to an-other. Write a prayer together, thanking God for your family life and asking God to strengthen your family’s commitment to one another. Pray this prayer together.
PRAYER FOR FAMILIES God, Our Father, loving and merciful,
bring together and keep all families in perfect unity of love and mutual support.
Instill in each member the spirit of understanding and affection for each
other. Keep quarrels and bitterness far from them,
and for their occasional failures instill forgiveness and peace.
May the mutual love and affection of parents set a good example. Instill in children self-respect
that they may respect others and grow in mature independence.
May the mutual affection and respect of families be a sign of Christian life here and hereafter, through Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior.
Amen.
