AWARD OF EXCELLENCE
Purpose: To give recognition to any member or members for work of outstanding merit in any
field of surveying. The award also affords the opportunity to inform the public of the
service provided by surveyors and to obtain favourable publicity for the work of
members. The award was previously named as the Award of Merit.
Conditions: The award may be made to a member or members who have submitted for consideration a
project for which they have been responsible and which in the opinion of the Council, is
worthy of the award.
It is a requirement of the Award that the physical development or status of projects
submitted for the Award are sufficiently advanced to enable a proper assessment of the
worthiness of the project.
Nature of the Award:
A suitably inscribed certificate.

BOGLE YOUNG SURVEYOR OF THE YEAR AWARD
Purpose: To perpetuate recognition of the outstanding services given and contributions made to
the survey profession by Archibald Hugh Bogle, CBE, a Fellow of the New Zealand
Institute of Surveyors, Councillor, President, Editor of the Journal and Member of the
Survey Board. The award was created in 1969.
Conditions: The award may be made annually to any Registered Surveyor who is a member of the
New Zealand Institute of Surveyors and who is not more than 35 years of age on 31
May of the year in which they are nominated and who has, in the opinion of the
Council, made a significant contribution to the profession of surveying.

FULTON BEQUEST
Origin: This award was established from a legacy from the estate of James Edward Fulton (1854-
1928) who was a foundation member of the New Zealand Institute of Surveyors and
who served as a Councillor, Vice-President and President.
Conditions: Class A.1. Awarded to a member for outstanding service to the New Zealand Institute
of Surveyors or to the profession of surveying.
Class A.2. Awarded to a member who has written a paper of sufficient merit on a subject
of professional or technical interest to members of the profession of surveying.
Class B.1. Awarded to a B.Surv graduate from the University of Otago who has been
awarded the degree with distinction or credit and who, on the recommendation of the
NZIS Admissions Panel and in the opinion of the assessors, is deemed worthy of the
award.
Class B.2. Awarded to a student member or associate who has written a paper or thesis
of sufficient merit on some aspect of surveying.
Nature of the Award:
Class A. Gold Medallion and a suitably inscribed certificate.

MEMORIAL PRIZE
Purpose: To perpetuate the memory of Maurice Crompton-Smith (1865-1953), Fellow of the New
Zealand Institute of Surveyors, Editor of the Journal and Secretary of the Survey Board.
Conditions: Awarded annually, on the recommendation of the NZIS Admissions Panel, to the
candidate submitting the best set of projects for a Certificate of Competency, which in
concept, content and presentation are deemed by the Admissions Panel to be worthy
of the award.
Nature of the Award:
The payment by the New Zealand Institute of Surveyors of $100 towards the purchase
by the recipient of a book or books which will be suitably inscribed, plus a suitably
inscribed certificate.

SURVEY AND SPATIAL NEW ZEALAND AWARD
Origin: This award was established by the New Zealand Institute of Surveyors in 1974 to
recognise the value of the work carried out by Technicians within the scope of the
profession.
Conditions: Nomination for the award was available annually to all members of the New Zealand
Technical Surveyors’ Association (NZTSA). The award was made by the Council of the
S+SNZ on the recommendation of the Executive Committee of the NZTSA to any person
who merited the award for the following:
(a) Had made a significant contribution in the field of surveying to the advancement of technicians of the NZTSA; or
(b) Whose accomplishments reflected credit on himself and the NZTSA.
The award was discontinued when the NZTSA was disbanded in 1988 at which time
members of the NZTSA were eligible to become Technician Members of the Institute.

who, in the opinion of the Council, is worthy of the award.

PERCY DYETT AWARD
Purpose: The award was established from a legacy from the estate of Henry Lewis Percy Dyett,
Fellow of the New Zealand Institute of Surveyors and Member of the Survey Board for
23 years from 1942 - 1965. It is intended to encourage a greater interest and all-round
knowledge of engineering and to encourage candidates to professionally present
themselves and their project to the NZIS Admissions Panel.
Conditions: Awarded annually, on the recommendation of the NZIS Admissions Panel, to the best
overall Land Development Engineering candidate in the Professional Entrance
Examinations.
Nature of the Award:

STATE SECTOR GROUP AWARD
Purpose: The award was established at the suggestion of the State Sector Group following its
dissolution in January 1998 and is intended to acknowledge academic excellence.
Conditions: Awarded annually to the highest placed candidate in the Cadastral Law examination
conducted by the Survey and Spatial NZ.

RESEARCH GRANT
Purpose To provide financial assistance to anyone wishing to carry out research into
some aspect of surveying, planning or spatial science
Eligibility Open to all applicants
Conditions Research outputs will be negotiated with each applicant, at a minimum a
report for Council or a refereed paper for a reputable journal will be
required
Payment Grant value and payment schedule will be based on the individual
application
Note that a total R&D pool of $15,000 is available for all Institute awards
each year

The scholarship applicant must describe:
• Full details of the research topic; • A proposed timetable for the research; • Where the research is to be carried out; • An outline of how the wider NZIS membership will benefit from the
research The applicant shall provide a Curriculum Vitae outlining, in particular, their

Purpose To provide financial assistance to members towards postgraduate studies
in Surveying at the University of Otago. The bursary is available for study
towards the following courses:
• Postgraduate Diploma in Applied Science (Surveying) • Postgraduate Diploma in Science (GIS) • Master of Surveying • Master of Science (Surveying) • Master of Applied Science (GIS) • Doctor of Philosophy
Eligibility Each applicant shall be an NZIS Member and have fulfilled one of the
following requirements:
• Have been admitted to the degree of Bachelor of Surveying or Bachelor of Science (Survey Measurement); or
• Have been admitted to the Diploma of Land Surveying and have been admitted to graduate status with the right to enrol for the Post Graduate Diploma in Science; or
• Have been admitted to graduate status with the right to enrol for the Post Graduate Diploma in Science
Conditions On approval of an application the applicant will supply a certificate from
the Registrar, University of Otago, certifying that the applicant is enrolled
for an appropriate post-graduate qualification
A successful applicant will be required to produce a paper for an NZIS
Annual Conference or a refereed paper for the New Zealand Surveyor on a
topic relevant to their study
There is an expectation of ongoing membership of, and active involvement
in, the NZIS throughout the course of study
Payment The amount shall be $3000 per applicant
Two thirds will be payable on receipt of evidence of enrolment

MAORI LAND ADMITTANCE BURSARY
Purpose The purpose of the Bursary is to promote surveying as a career option for
Maori students.
Eligibility The Maori Land Admittance Bursary is available to Maori students enrolled
in the intermediate (pre-professional) year of the following degree level
courses at the University of Otago:
• Bachelor of Surveying • Bachelor of Science, majoring in Land Planning and Development • Bachelor of Science, majoring in Survey Measurement • Bachelor of Applied Science, majoring in Geographic Information
Systems
Conditions A maximum of three students may receive this bursary each year
On approval of an application the applicant will supply a certificate from
the Registrar, University of Otago, certifying that the applicant is enrolled
for an appropriate qualification
Payment The amount shall be $1000 per applicant
The bursary will be payable on receipt of evidence of enrolment

Conditions A maximum of one student may receive this bursary each year
A successful applicant will be required to produce a paper for the Survey
Quarterly or New Zealand Surveyor on a topic relevant to their study
On approval of an application the applicant will supply a certificate from
the Registrar, University of Otago, certifying that the applicant is enrolled
for an appropriate qualification
Payment The amount shall be $2000 per applicant
Half will be payable on receipt of evidence of enrolment
The remaining half will be payable on publication of a paper derived from
the research project

obtaining an acceptable degree or diploma in land planning at a New
Zealand university

the Registrar of the university at which the recipient intends to study,
certifying that the applicant is enrolled for an appropriate approved
tertiary qualification
A successful applicant will be required to produce a paper for a NZIS
Annual Conference or a refereed paper for the New Zealand Surveyor on a
topic relevant to their course
There is an expectation of ongoing membership of, and active involvement
