Definition of Smart Cities?

“A smart sustainable city is an innovative city thatuses information and communicationtechnologies (ICTs) and other means to improvequality of life, efficiency of urban operation andservices, and competitiveness, while ensuring thatit meets the needs of present and futuregenerations with respect to economic, social,environmental as well as cultural aspects”.

What are smart cities…..

Smart Cities rely onintegrated andinterconnected systemsto effectively providebetter services andincrease quality of life ofcitizens, ensuring equalopportunities to all andprotecting theenvironment.

Why Connected Communities and Smart Cities?

The desire to offer quality of life to citizens

through the provision of adequate fresh water;

general access to cleaner energy, access to

services; the ability to travel efficiently from

one point to another; a sense of safety and

security

Address exponential growth of urbanization

By 2050, 70% of the world’s population is

expected to live in some kind of urban areas and

connected communities.

The challenge will be to supply these

populations with basic resources like safe food,

clean water and sufficient energy, while also

ensuring overall economic, social and

environmental sustainability.

Modern day cities and communities are deprived of vital elements like quality of life and socio-economic development which can be delivered by the smart cities.

Smart cities and connected communities are an endeavour to make cities more efficient, sustainable and liveable

There is a need to redesign the cities and communities and migrate them

• good governance, especially e-Governance and citizen participation

No Electricity and Water! = No Smart City!.

First step to a Smart City: reliable access to electricity and clean water

Not every Smart City is built up from the scratch.(They gradually

evolve and become smarter).

Building a Smart City is highly complex

Every city faces its own challenges

Every city requires its own mix of solutions

Standards: = One common denominator that greatly simplifies

this task

Therefore:

No standards, No smart cities

The Role of Standards

Standards facilitate the integration of structures from

different suppliers

• Interconnection in cities (both physically and virtually)

can only be achieved by standardized interfaces using

the same harmonized technical rules that are

exemplified in Standards.

• The use of International Standards also facilitates the

long-term maintenance and repair of city infrastructure.

Spare parts can be bought from anywhere in the world at

more competitive prices.

Standards = Many Solutions —

• Companies use Standards to build the electrical and

electronic components, devices or systems which

support smooth and integrated Smart City development.

• Standards facilitate the development of tailor-made

solutions that are adapted to a given city.

The role of standards in making cities smarter

• Smart Transportation eg air transport:

The computers, printers and ticket readers at check-in; baggage tagging (RFID), conveyor belts, lighting, announcement systems, security and access control, scanners and biometric readers, escalators and elevators, luggage dispatch, airfield lighting, communication and radio equipment, flight surveillance instrumentation, and more are all covered by international standards

The intended outcomes of amanagement system for sustainable development incommunities include managing sustainability andfostering smartness and resilience in communities.

ISO 37120, Sustainable development & resilience of communities -Indicators for city services & quality of life

This standard defines and establishes methodologies for aset of indicators to steer and measure the performance ofcity services and quality of life. The standards is applicableto any city, municipality or local government thatundertakes to measure its performance in a comparableand verifiable manner, irrespective of size and location.

ISO/TR 37150:2014, Smart community infrastructures - Review of existing activities relevant to metrics

The standard provides a review of existing activities relevantto metrics for smart community infrastructures. In ISO/TR37150:2014, the concept of smartness is addressed in termsof performance relevant to technologically implementablesolutions. The standard addresses community infrastructuressuch as energy, water, transportation, waste and informationand communications technology (ICT).

The framework describes theplanning, development, operation and maintenancemethodology to facilitate the harmonization of eachinfrastructure as a part of a smart community and ensuresthat the interactions between multiple infrastructures arewell orchestrated.

Localisation and Implementation of Smart City Standards

Countries need to understand the International Standards

Local Standard Organisations should provide a repository of all the standards and be part of the cities migration to Smart Cities

Countries should have clear policies, visions, strategies and resources to implement smart cities and connected communities

Recommendations and Way forward Smart Cities and Connected Communities are no longer the wave of the

future. They are here now and growing quickly and lets our difference whenwe go back home by lobbying and contributing to the processes.

Going smart would not be easy given the lack of critical infrastructure in thecountries and the non availability of reliable power supply, clean water andmodern standardised buildings and homes/houses.

The Cities are growing fast and efforts must be made to ensure that they takeadvantage of available smart technologies to provide infrastructures andservices needed for the cities to function effectively.

The development of smart cities and connected communities requires theinput of all stakeholders; government, private sector organizations and thecitizenry.

Most importantly , realising that standards make cities smarter, we mustembrace standards to make our cites and communities are smarter

We must all join hands to make a reality in our region .

Lets make our countries provide better the best places for people to live,where businesses can prosper, people are part of the economy, they caninnovate and we have sustainable economies
