Big Sky Country is the home to the most amazing things you could find. The most gracious, yet strong people you can meet, and the biggest skies you might ever see. It’s a destination for tourists, engaged couples, entrepreneurs, and those with the Wild West in their hearts.

What is it about this place? What makes couples want to share their love in the vast valleys or tall peaks that make Montana a “Last Best Place?” To answer these questions, it is necessary to KNOW Montana. Not just read about it in magazines, or tally up how many times a Montana town is listed on the “US Top 10 cities for …” It’s about visiting, exploring and experiencing all that we have to offer.

Getting back to nature is the first part. Montana has so much to do and enjoy, and more than all of that, it has a lot to teach about what getting outside really means. When a bride and groom bring their friends and family to Montana, maybe for the first time, they have the opportunity to share wild waters, quite woods and peaceful yet tremendous mountain tops. Recreational activities will not leave thrill seekers disappointed, and those craving calm will find it next to a river or soaking in a hot spring pool.

Once the nature and the wildlife is appreciated, then it’s the charming towns and downtown Main Streets that will keep guests occupied from morning to late night. There isn’t a town in Montana that does not strive to have the most friendly, cutest downtowns

in the whole US. If it is an urban setting that a destination bride & groom might crave, downtown Montana is where they will go. For example, finding a gorgeous boutique hotel is easy. Then a couple can pair it with the wilderness, so close it can be seen from town; each guest can experience the best of both worlds.

Weddings in Montana are gorgeous, rustic and professionally created – just ask the professionals in this magazine! Check out our professional profiles to see what these great wedding vendors have to say about why they are part of this wedding industry. Maybe it is the easy access to rustic venues, but Rocky Mountain Bride would say that it’s the people. It always is. Wedding professionals in Montana are widely recognized across national websites, print magazines and more for their excellence in wedding planning. In this great state, couples find the same talent they would find anywhere else plus that little something about Montana personalities that make them fun-loving, friendly and personable.

Ok, there’s the point. Image a wild, rugged nature that invites visitors in through a calming presence and daring landscape. Then, captures them by offering a friendly experience that visitors just can’t get enough of. Still don’t believe – join everyone who has already found Montana and – Get Lost in Montana! Visit us to plan a destination wedding and an experience your guests have never had before.

A Gift of Giving

Wedding Professionals giving back in their community

In the spirit of charity, one group of wedding specialists are doing amazing work to give back to a deserving couple the gift of a lifetime – a $40,000 wedding. Almost all aspects of the couple’s wedding were donated by area wedding professionals who contributed their services as “The Gift Worth Giving.”

Three Bozeman business owners began the idea to gift a dream wedding to one deserving Montana couple. Larry Stanley, photographer and owner of Montana Wedding Photographer, Jena Silverness, event designer and owner of Silver Lined Weddings and Megan Jacks, owner of After 5 and Weddings bridal and formal wear shop, along with producer, Stana Milodragovich, teamed up to give a dream wedding each year.

“Through marriage vows, two people start a new life

together – perhaps the ultimate expression of love between two individuals. So, in order for us to help perpetuate the love, we’ve decide to gift it in the form of an unforgettable wedding day to a deserving, loving Montana couple,” say The Gift Worth Giving Founders.

For the past three years, this dream wedding has been held at Springhill Pavilion. Owners of the Pavilion, Sally and Chum Howe, reserved one prime wedding date for the deserving couple while Gift Sponsors filled in the rest. The event design, the bridal gown, attendants’ dresses, tuxedo rentals, photography, flowers, catering, DJ, wedding rings, make-up, beverages and more are provided for the couple by an amazing group of top-notch, local wedding businesses.

Besides the necessary requirements for a wedding, such as music, flowers, the bridal gown and others, business owners across the Gallatin Valley have donated services that make the couples’ experience truly one of a kind. From a workout regime to dance lessons and a honeymoon package, the amount of services donated to make a difference to the Bozeman community truly has no price.

Each year, many couples apply to be considered for this once in a lifetime opportunity. The winning couple is chosen by The Gift Worth Giving founders and contributing sponsors. As Founder, Megan Jacks, states, “Deserving can be defined in many ways. Our couples have experienced financial hardship, illness or they might have been very community-minded and deserving of this gift because they themselves were so giving of their time as volunteers. Our couples have been considered for many reasons.”

The story of the first ever Gift Worth Giving couple is one of the most poignant: Heidi Turney and Tanner Lagge are native Montanans living in Dillon, Montana. Heidi and Tanner met the first time when she was a senior in high school. Almost three more years went by before they ran into each other again, and found that they still had a connection. They knew then that they were meant for each other. Tanner not only fell in love with her, but also her then 7 month-old son. Heidi is the youngest of five children in a very close knit family. Almost exactly a year before her application, their father, Bobby Joe, was tragically killed in an avalanche while snowmobiling. Without

her father, her family had no way to provide financially for a wedding. More importantly, her dad was not there to walk her down the aisle and her mom was heartbroken. This dream wedding meant the world for the whole family.

“The selection process is always the most difficult part”, says Megan Jacks, co-founder of The Gift and owner of After 5 and Weddings. “Once we meet the finalists and hear their unique and deserving stories, it is so difficult to only choose one! We would love to be able to give a wedding to each couple who has shared their story with us.”

The founders and organizers of The Gift Worth Giving, along with countless local wedding businesses work tirelessly over the course of four months to prepare the wedding and the couple for their dream day. This amazing group only has roughly four months to complete the planning process; much less time than the normal bride has to plan her wedding day. However, due to the top quality and heart of all those involved, the deserving couple is given a day to remember.

The Gift Worth Giving has completed three successful years of donating a wedding. This year the founders have chosen to take a summer off to reflect upon what has already come to be appreciated in the Gallatin Valley and Montana community. They are not accepting applications for this coming year, but are looking forward to the exciting growth that has stemmed from the charitable hearts of this community. Check out images and more about The Gift Worth Giving on their Facebook page.

What trends do you see for Montana Weddings in 2014? I see lace continuing to be a strong trend for 2014 but with more dramatic backs. Also, shorter skirts and gowns with appliques will start to make an appearance. Color combinations such as black and white will be trending. The key theme for this year is less is more, sleek and modern.

How was your business created? How did you get your start? In 2008 I was shopping with my sister for her gown at Kleinfelds in Manhattan. I had been researching the Bozeman area to figure out a niche I felt I could fill. After experiencing the big corporate side of bridal retail, I decided I would love to bring a more personalized boutique style to Bozeman where I would get to know each customer by name and they would have confidence in my store and walk away with a memorable experience. My vision was to bring unique bridal fashion

sensibilities to Montana brides-to -be.

What is your greatest form of inspiration? Beautiful clothing that makes a woman feel gorgeous is my inspiration in life. Wedding gowns aren’t just dresses, they speak to who a woman is inside. Seeing a woman feel beautiful in the most important dress she’ll ever put on is such a great feeling.

What is one goal you have for your business? We want everything about your experience at Plume to be a celebration of who you are. We want you to feel beautiful in your gown… we want your time with us to be an extension of the most magical day of your life.

What makes Montana weddings unique? Montana weddings are truly spectacular due to the endless options for picturesque nuptials. Whether along a river, by the white rocky

What makes a mountain man? Is it their likeliness to have facial hair and a scruffy do, or the constant smell of campfire that lingers with them around town? Have you ever gone to a wedding and seen the “mountain man?” Here are RMB, we understand that you want your mountain man to look his absolute best during your special day. We are here to help and to show you that your mountain man can remain himself but impress the rest with his sharp style, good looks, and even better attitude

with just a little help from our friends.

Bozeman, Montana - a popular destination for a mountain man, located in the western Rocky Mountains is known for Yellowstone National Park, Hot Springs, mountains ranges, rivers, fishing, and skiing.

Hours were spent in waders and water up to your waist with Tom Melvin, Bozeman local and flyfishing guide for world-reknowned, Yellow Dog Fly Fishing. Tom was ready for a day with the Rocky Mountain Bride make-over team. Warming up slowly, Cali Frankovic captured the perfect images of Tom in his element, at one with nature, fishing the Madison River, just outside of Bozeman. With his southern charm, the ladies are going to be taking a second look after this transition.

Tom went from luscious locks to a shorter British-styled haircut thanks to the The Loft Spa in downtown Bozeman. It was time to trade in the waders for a black classic tuxedo from local shop, After 5 & Weddings. Dressed to impress, we headed to The Baxter Hotel and Baccus Pub located in Bozeman’s downtown historic district - open since 1929. Cali was able to capture the elegant, sophisticated side of Tom, however, he will always remain a true mountain man at heart.

Why should a man wear a flower on his lapel, especially when he is likely to be the only fellow sporting one? I’ll give you three reasons:

1. It’s a great conversation starter – I guarantee someone will ask about it; the key is to be confident as to why you are wearing it. If a compliment is given, simply say thank you, and then move on with the conversation unless your conversation partner(s) wishes to dwell on it. Nothing sours a conversation more than a man who displays arrogance and who talks about himself too much – the flower in your lapel

should be like a spark….a conversation starter, not the subject of the conversation.

2. You have something to give – How many times have you spent a wonderful evening with a woman you just met, and at the end of the night the only thing you can give her is your business card? Try leaving her with something a bit more unique and memorable. Or perhaps you want to make your aunt’s 70th birthday even more special – there are few things nicer to receive than a sincere showing of love accompanied by a flower.

3. It shows you pay attention to details – When wearing a boutonniere, it’s about realizing and showing that the little things matter.

{his fashion}

The Manly WayBoutonniere:

32 rockymountainbride.com

Page 35: Rocky Mountain Bride Montana Spring 2014

How to Choose the Flower for Your Jacket’s LapelFirst the flower should fit the occasion – simple white or red blooms for formal occasions, while for less formal occasions more colorful and exotic flowers are fine. Second, the boutonniere should be coordinated with the clothing you are wearing. If in doubt, a simple white bloom, like a white pocket square, is always a safe bet. And speaking of pocket squares, you are permitted to wear a boutonniere with a pocket square, although a boutonniere by itself can stand in for a pocket square. The rule here is balance; avoid too much of a good thing by muting down the color of your square or wearing a white pocket handkerchief. The final factor in selecting a boutonniere flower is how long you plan on wearing it – many flowers will wilt after a few hours in the heat and without water, so if you are looking for something that will last all day in the West Texas heat consider consulting a florist.

The Carnation Boutonniere – Simple, affordable, easy to find; of all the flowers a man can choose for his boutonniere, the carnation is perhaps the most versatile and

easiest to pull off. White is always acceptable, although it is best suited to more formal occasions. Red is a close second, and can bring a dash of color to a black tie outfit or dress up a sport jacket and jeans. I personally prefer miniature carnations; however, a normal bloom that hasn’t fully opened works well. The only downside to a carnation is that it will begin to droop after a day of wearing, so wear it fresh or if for a long day consider having it professionally prepared by a florist.

The Rose Boutonniere – About as easy to find as carnations, roses are more complicated to wear as they are substantially larger and must be free from imperfections. To the general public, they are considered the most formal flower, and they are perfect choices when celebrating love at either a wedding or anniversary. Rose boutonnieres look best when they are professionally prepared as then they can be permanently tilted and even hydrated with a tiny water stop. If you head down this route ensure your jacket lapel can support the weight.

Other Flower Options – Gardenia, Lily of the Valley, Sweet William, Orchids, Hyacinths, Daisies, and Lilacs are all excellent choices. You may have to special order these, but

the reward is that you’ll have a unique and beautiful companion.

Remember that flowers have meanings and that these meanings change across cultures. Carnations are one of the most common boutonniere flowers in the United States, are the national flower of Spain, and show respect in Korea. In France however, carnations are a common funeral flower and considered unlucky outside of this setting.

RememberWear It with Confidence – Do not be afraid to be an individual. Wear a boutonniere because you want to.

Pay Attention to Proportion – If you’re a small man, wear small flowers. If you’re a large man, consider something that is more befitting your size.

Never Upstage the Ladies – A boutonniere is a single flower or a small collection of tiny blooms; never wear something unwieldy.

Really, these two individuals work quite synergistically together and do not compete against each other. However, many brides don’t know the difference between the two besides their titles. Mostly unique to resort areas around the country, catering managers often take the place of a wedding planner’s role, but only up to a certain point. Let me explain.

We all know what the typical planner will do; the movie “Father of the Bride” often comes to mind. Really, your planner’s duties are unlimited, but your catering manager just might have boundaries. Destination weddings really do require a planner to help a bride who just isn’t around to tend to all of the necessary details. Local wedding planners get to know on-site catering managers personally, as they work with them over and over at their resort. Starting to become a little clearer? If not, read on.

The catering manager’s title doesn’t really do the position justice. In fact, they do quite a bit more than just manage the catering of your wedding. This is where brides become easily confused. A catering manager will often answer questions about processionals, music selection, lodging,

and more. Because they see so many weddings each season at their resort, they have a lot of expertise and answers to share. However, ask them to facilitate your rehearsal and you might get an answer you weren’t quite expecting. The fact remains; catering managers really represent the property and not the bride. Instead of managing your every wish, oftentimes they stick around to make sure the property is doing what was promised, like the kitchen is properly staffed and things are flowing smoothly with the AV set-up for the slideshow.

There is certainly some overlap between the two. Our best advice: interview your catering manager well and identify where their duties end and where you will need to pick things up with your wedding planner. If you hire your wedding planner locally, he or she will be back in the mountains preparing things the way you would want them while you are busy working in the big city in the months leading up to the big day. And rest assured that he or she is meeting regularly with your on-site catering manager working over all the details.

Bottom line: you need them both.

RMB is simply smitten by these gorgeous photos! The rugged, raw landscape blended with the classic gold and rich floral is perfection. Orange Photographie, located right here in Montana, traveled to Oregon to capture this look – “We had the opportunity to photograph this organically styled wedding shoot

during a workshop hosted by photographer, Erich McVey. While it took place in Bend, OR, we feel it is a style that fits equally as well in the rugged and majestic Rocky Mountains. It is a graceful blend of effortless and elegant, from the ethereal gown to the uninhibited florals and organic calligraphy."

The natural elegance of the gold blends in perfectly with the rugged and raw landscape – A 2014 trend to look out for brides.

Choosing Floral – choosing flowers rich in texture and color will give you the “WOW” factor!

Weathered Woods – Market Tables are simply fabulous! The natural wood grain gives you the more rustic feel that works great when blending modern with the Montana landscape.

Whimsical White Dress – Organic is the perfect word to describe this dress. It’s natural shape and airy feel fits in perfectly with the outdoor space.

RMB Trends – Gold is back! Just like the candlesticks and vase is these photos, gold is the perfect way to add classic elegance to your big day. Gold accents work in any space too! Whether you are getting married in a ballroom or in a meadow – gold will create the perfect blend of “organic and ethereal”.

Paper Perfection – Sometimes when it comes to invites, less is WAY more! By choosing a natural, textured paper, will give you that organic, yet classic feel. "Laura & Billy were our beautiful couple that accompanied the details to create a styled wedding shoot for the attendees. Laura's ethereal gown form White Dresses has an effortless beauty and grace, paired with a simple Chloe flat and crown braids with interwoven silk ribbon. We imagined this couple embracing a blended design both understated and graceful. This was accomplished with exquisite unruly florals, organic calligraphy and paper, and a rich and graceful table nestled within the brush." - Stylist, Ginny Au

OUT WEST

Engagement

48 rockymountainbride.com

by Abby Turner

Inspiration comes from all kinds of places, but many times more than not, in the great Out West, we find our inspiration in the landscape, the nature, the “westness”of the west and the people. Capturing the moment of love with a rugged Western man and a classically beautiful Montana gal is a photographer’s goal. Using an engagement shoot to bond with the photographer before the wedding day is the perfect opportunity to also get accustomed to the camera being

focused on a bride and her most important person.

Couples use this time to create lasting images of casual elegance, fun and grace before the big day.

Out West, as easterners generally say, we have a ruggedness that makes us strong to the core, but soft on the edges – just like a Montana engagement shoot should be. The stage is one of many abandoned buildings on a ranch available to the Western-focused couple.

Meandering horses, a stray silo or two and the

backdrops to profiles provides texture and variety to the wide landscape. Engagement sessions might seem necessary while booking a wedding photographer, but keep in mind – there’s a reason for each moment.

Photographers want to get to know the couple whose most precious moments they’ll be photographing. Take advantage of this moment to get some amazing casual images as a couple, bond with your photographer and each memory will be priceless.

What is one goal you have for your business? Though our catering division is in high demand (50-60 weddings a season) we are exploring some ideas to offer a better wedding planning experience with an all inclusive package.

What is the best advice you give your brides? Have a good team of professional vendors you can trust that fit your personality and vision. You will be working with these vendors to make serious decisions so you want to have a good relationship with them.

What are your favorite moments at weddings? Happy clients! I love to visit with clients and guests after dinner to hear how pleased and grateful they are. We want every diner to enjoy their meal.

What is something unexpected a destination bride would discover about Montana? Quality vendors are limited in Montana. Making arrangements last minute can be close to impossible as the best venues, DJ's, caterers and even officiants/pastors book fast. Put your mind at ease and start early!

What makes Montana weddings unique? Unparalleled beauty! They don't call it the Treasure State for nothing! Snowcapped mountains in summer, amazing sun sets and golden wheat fields make Montana THE place to get married in the Rocky Mountains.

The Coeur d’Alene Resort opened in May of 1986 and recently went through a multimillion dollar renovation in March 2012 highlighting a new, fully renovated lobby, completely redesigned on-property Dockside restaurant and lounge with new atmosphere and menu. The resort is home to an award-winning golf course with the world’s only floating green, a full-service spa, signature restaurants and year-round recreational activities. Coeur d’Alene Resort is located in

northern Idaho approximately 31 miles east of Spokane, Washington and 100 miles south of the Canadian border.

So many popular honeymoon locations are classified by their prime attraction: water, mountains, adventure, food, or spa. But after months of planning the perfect rocky mountain wedding, a bride also wants the perfect rocky mountain honeymoon. Lots of Montana brides want the perfect rocky mountain honeymoon with water, mountains, adventure, food, AND a spa. Somewhere that was easy to get to without

spending hours in transit but far enough away to feel like a true respite. That place is the Coeur d’Alene Resort, which, quite literally, has it all. It is easily accessible by car, plane, or rail. Each transportation method offers a scenic route winding through forests and quaint mountain towns only to be greeted by a vast mountain lake at the end. Upon arrival, couples will notice the architecture of the resort mimicked the surrounding mountains with copper trimmings catching the sun for an amazingly romantic sheen. Within the first few steps inside couples become acquainted with the resort’s dominating characteristic: comfortable elegance. The entry is decorated in precious metal tones with floor to ceiling windows looking at the lake, while lush seating areas made it a very comfortable view to enjoy.

The Coeur D’Alene Resort staff makes sure that honeymoon couples have a very special occasion made for two. Even the front desk is separated out so each arrival experience is private. Amenities in each room include a raised level for a better view and an easily controlled fireplace and curtains by remote control, not to mention the window seats giving amazing views of the lake.

Cuisine at the Coeur D’Alene Resort is unparalleled. There are lots of options in every price range for every type of dining experience. Dockside is the main restaurant with a large menu and a great view of the lake. There is a small café for snacks and a great bar with intimate tables in every nook and cranny. Room service has a “Rose Petal Brunch” with delicious wild huckleberry pancakes. When it is delivered, the server scatters fresh rose petals on the table, too. However, the pinnacle of the Resort restaurants is Beverly’s. The menu is designed around

“Northwest flavors” and boasts the Pacific Northwest’s largest wine cellar. Every day there is a complimentary wine tasting with the sommelier that is friendly and fun. The menu options ranged from comfortable burgers with exceptional ingredients to prime rib and seafood. Couples enjoy the amazing services as servers greet them with friendly congratulations on their wedding and aim to make you feel relaxed despite the pristinely elegant atmosphere of the restaurant and food. Be sure to sample the orange rolls when offered. To finish with a grand flourish, your server might even present a couple with fresh cotton candy swirled on a delicate cake stand that encased delicious homemade

ice cream. The chocolate plaque said, “Congratulations.” Once again, the Resort combined comfort and elegance with ease.

The spa is another unexpected “built for two” experience. In addition to an extensive menu of services for women they have a great selection of options for the guys. Their treatments are focused on sports, deep tissue, and minerals. Couples can stay in each other’s company in a co-ed relaxation room with wall to wall cushions, an epic fireplace, and tasty snacks. Insiders tip: order the “Sole Soak” and reserve a spot earlier in the day so you may be lucky enough to watch the fog lift from the lake. There are several couples treatment rooms so even though different services are selected, you can still enjoy them together. Couples leave the Coeur D’Alene Resort well-rested and more in love than ever before. Because it is such an easy trip to make you can plan to return for your anniversaries to relive the magic for years to come. A perfect rocky mountain wedding concluded with the perfect rocky mountain honeymoon.

How was your business created? How did you get your start? Having discovered a love for photography, I began taking photos for friends and family. I quickly learned I had a passion for weddings and families; capturing those moments of significance that want to be forever remembered. It is hard to believe that 7 years have gone by since I started.

What is the best advice you give to your brides? Do not skip out on doing an engagement session with your wedding photographer! Think of your engagement session as a test run. You get an idea of how your photographer works and your photographer learns what works for you based on personality, comfort in front of the camera, and personal taste.

What details have you swooning right now in weddings? I honestly just love it when you can see personality in the

wedding details. The best details are ones you can use to decorate your home later or use after the wedding. The more details you use, the more unique photos you end up with. Whatever your taste, decide on a theme and go with it!

What are your favorite moments at weddings? I love those moments when people forget I’m there. When they can be comfortable enough to be themselves---that is when you capture the best photos. Being able to capture the moment and emotions as they happen lets genuine expressions show through the photo.

What is your greatest form of inspiration? Light. It creates emotion in a photograph. How natural light comes through a window and illuminates the bride just right can create a feeling of awe. A haze in the photograph from the sun can create warmth….joy. However you choose to use

it, light can move the viewer to feel something, even if they weren’t there. Seeing light and knowing how to use it to my benefit has been one of the best inspirations in my photography.

About Kristal Lohse and Evolve Images I have had an interest in photography since I was little and I was one of those kids in school that loved working on the yearbook. I took a Film Photography: Dark Room class, in college & graduated with an Art Degree with a concentration in Computer Graphics, and discovered during that time that photography was the medium I had the most interest in. I bought myself my first Mac computer and Digital SLR camera soon after graduation. After much thought, I decided that I wanted to pursue what I love.

When planning a mountain wedding, the effects of altitude should be addressed. It need not be a scary thing, but if everyone has the facts, it is easier for your friends and family to be at ease.

ALTITUDE FACTS: As you ascend to higher altitudes, atmospheric pressure decreases, the air is thinner and less oxygen is available. It is also colder, drier and the ultraviolet rays from the sun are stronger.

After arriving at high altitude, you will probably notice that your breath-ing is faster and/or deeper, and you may feel short of breath especially when exercising. This is the body's first and most effective response to higher elevation. In addition, your heart is likely to beat faster and you may develop nausea, unusual tiredness, headache, or have difficulty sleeping.

Before you leave home, you can do a few things to decrease the effects of high altitude. Spending two nights at modest altitude, 5000 to 6000 feet may decrease symptoms when you ascend. Eating foods which are

high in carbohydrates, drinking more water than usual and using less salt may also help.

Once you arrive take it easy for the first day or two. Adequate hydration is important in the prevention of altitude illness. Drink two or three times more water or fluid than usual. Limit alcohol consumption for two or three days and minimize caffeine intake. Limit salty foods and increase carbo-hydrate consumption. Above all, listen to your body! Do not push the limits of your physical capabilities.

Big Sky wed-cations

Known as the Big Sky Country, the blue, vast sky goes on forever through the prairies and over the mountain peaks of Montana. The former Governor of Montana, Brian Schweitzer, always called Montana the “Last Best Place.” Montana is majestic and

special with one of the premier resorts for destination weddings, Big Sky Resort.

Located only 18 miles from the border of Yellowstone National Park and just south of the busiest airport in Montana, servicing 13 non-stop flights from major

"The Last BEST Place

To Get Hitched"

cities, Big Sky Resort is sought out by many brides and grooms for their “Best Place” to say “I Do.”

Destination weddings today have become more of a wed-cation for the wedding party, family and friends. The scenic backdrop and outdoor activities may be tops on everyone’s mind, but quality accommodations, a professional staff, catering and food services are just as important in bringing a couple’s dream to life.

Planning and finalizing the wedding day can be very stressful. Add in planning an outdoor destination wedding and it can be downright daunting. Big Sky Resort has a specific Wedding & Events Manager, Margo Humphries, to help each bride and groom through every step. “I want to give each of my brides the peace of mind that everything can be done in one place. It’s their vacation too and I want them enjoying Big Sky Resort with their guests” says Humphries.

Summer is a popular time for weddings in the Big Sky, each as unique and special as the bride and groom hosting. With Big Sky Resort and Moonlight Basin merging as one resort under one name, Big Sky Resort, it’s now the largest ski resort in the United States. So, it isn’t unusual to host winter weddings.

Cold temperatures and mountain snow aren’t usually in the picture when brides dream up their perfect wedding day. But for Tracy Corwin of Dallas, TX, Lone Peak in December was the ultimate backdrop for her white wedding to husband to be, Mike Martin. For her big day, Mother Nature offered up an unequaled mix of sunshine and snow to make the

ideal backdrop for her dream outdoor nuptials.

Just ask Laura Parker, who brought a team of 10 aspiring photographers with her to capture every moment of the Martin family’s celebration of love and commitment. “This was one of the most beautiful winter weddings that we have ever seen,” Parker said.

The couple exchanged vows in an intimate outdoor ceremony in Big Sky’s base area - the bride braved brisk mountain air in an elegant strapless dress. A few members of the photography team even hung suspended in mid-air to get the perfect shot, thanks to the help of the resort’s Twin Zipline.

Following the ceremony, Tracy, Mike and their guests dined on Mexican Meatballs and Lemon-Thyme Roasted Chicken, and danced into the wee hours of the morning. Local favorite the Sweet Pea Bakery crafted a beautiful three-tier wedding cake decorated with intricate candied snowflakes to complete the couple’s winter wonderland theme.

Who wouldn’t want an element of adventure to begin a lifetime together? With new husband Mike’s arms wrapped firmly around her, Tracy couldn’t help but join the fun in Big Sky Resort’s Tube Park, wedding dress and all.

Big Sky Resort’s Director of Conference Services, Kura Liedberg, expressed “Our entire team enjoyed every minute of this wedding. Tracy and Mike were the perfect couple!”

Big Sky Resort can handle everything from multiple venues to catering to decorations to lodging arrangements at both Mountain Village and Moonlight Lodge with over 60,000 square feet of function space. Throw in a full service spa, complete with a hair salon, and added events like rehearsal dinners and farewell brunches, Big Sky is truly a one-stop destination resort.

In the Mountain Village is the Lone Peak Pavilion, a perfect setting for an outdoor wedding or reception for up to 180 guests, offering scenic views of Lone Mountain and the surrounding Spanish Peaks. With its own catering tent, updated landscaping, custom lighting, and outdoor heaters,

the Pavilion is the perfect venue for memorable mountain weddings, receptions, and events.

A multitude of reception options are available in the Mountain Village from the Talus Room, seating up to 100 guests, to the Peaks Restaurant, seating up to 80 guests, to the spacious Missouri Ballroom with seating for as many as 750 guests.

Moonlight area features the Moonlight Lodge with a towering stone fireplace, floor-to-ceiling windows highlighting majestic mountain views, wide-open patio, and a touch of rustic elegance in the décor. Moonlight Lodge is an ideal venue for up to 200 guests. An impressive staircase makes for a grand entrance for an indoor wedding. While the picturesque outdoor setting on the patio offers the iconic Lone Peak as the backdrop.

The bridal party can relax, renew and revitalize at Big Sky Resort’s Solace Spa, providing everything from the bridal party hair and makeup to pedicure and manicures to relaxing massage options. Solace Spa has two locations at Mountain Village and Moonlight Lodge. The Moonlight Lodge location also offers the Signature Vichy Shower Experiences. Solace Spa also makes condo calls too, bringing their expertise to you.

As the saying goes, location, location, location. Not just where the wedding venue will be, but where the guests will lodge and congregate. Big Sky Resort offers accommodations from value to luxury within walking distance of most of the wedding venues. The centrally located Mountain Village plaza has guests bumping into each other as they head off to go ziplining, experience the Lone Peak Expedition: Tram to the Top, or a leisurely scenic lift ride. Big Sky’s Basecamp to Yellowstone has so many activities; it will be a true wed-cation for your guests.

wedding planning checklist

APPROXIMATELY ONE YEAR OUT:• Buy a binder, the best place to hold ideas, contracts and other info,

and keep it nearby -- you never know when inspiration will strike!• Make a guest list, and start collecting snail-mail and email addresses.• Hammer out a budget -- figure out where you can cut back and

where you want to splurge.• Decide on a destination. Unsure? Talk to a travel agent or hit the

internet.• Research the marriage requirements in your chosen destination. • Look into the potential wedding and reception sites, hotels and

wedding planners in your locale.• Book your engagement photo session.• Start shopping for your gown, taking into consideration the

ceremony site and the destination's climate.• Choose your maid of honor, best man and other attendants.• Design a wedding website. Add links to the tourism board, hotel

and venues so your guests can have important info and get excited about where they're going.

SIX TO NINE MONTHS OUT:• Set the date, reserve your site and pick your planner.• Send out your save-the-dates with your website address.• Select vendors, including caterer, photographer, florist, and band

or DJ. Get recommendations from your hotel or planner, and check references from past clients.

• Choose an officiant, and start planning the service.• Research activities and tours available in your locale, and plan at

least one group option per day.• Order your gown, and select attendants' dresses.• Investigate any ethnic customs or cultural traditions you might want

to incorporate into your event.• Register for gifts or create a honeymoon registry.

FOUR TO SIX MONTHS OUT:• Order your wedding rings.• Obtain your passports and visas, and if necessary, get any

needed blood tests or vaccinations.• Arrange any rental needs like chair covers and sound equipment.• Order your wedding invitations and thank-you cards, plus any

special stationery (welcome letters, menus, maps, itineraries, signs).• Buy or reserve wedding duds for the groom and wedding party.• Buy gifts for your attendants and family members, and start com-

posing your thank-you notes to them.• Book accommodations and airfare for your wedding and honeymoon.

• Make hair, makeup and spa appointments for you and your 'maids.• Shop for wedding accessories (shoes, jewelry, headpiece, lingerie),

resort wear, decor and other goods (cake topper, guest book, ring

pillow).

TWO TO FOUR MONTHS OUT:• Arrange and confirm all of your group activities, including transpor-

tation for off site excursions.• Finalize details with your vendors, including menus, photo poses

and locations, floral specifics and special songs -- and get every-thing in writing.

• Make or order the guest favors and welcome-bag items.

ONE TO TWO MONTHS OUT:• Send out your formal invites six to eight weeks before the big

day; include a program of scheduled events, plus dress code, if applicable.

• Arrange for when and how welcome-bag items and decor should be delivered to your hotel.

• Have your final gown fitting, complete with lingerie and acces-sories.

• Assign wedding-weekend tasks to trusted friends and family mem-bers.

• Write your vows.

TWO WEEKS OUT:• Review all the details you agreed on with your planner, caterer,

photographer, videographer, florist, musicians and any other ven-dors involved in the wedding events.

• Confirm your travel bookings.

• Put together a seating chart, if needed, and make place cards.

ON ARRIVAL:• Confirm details with your planner and officiant.• Apply for a marriage license.• Inspect ceremony and reception sites.• Assemble or approve welcome bags, and have them delivered to

guests' rooms before they arrive.

THE WEDDING DAY:• Forget about all the planning and focus on having a blast!
