The Montana Tech defense officially can’t catch a break.Last week, the No. 21 Orediggers (1-2) faced the nation’s second-leading rushoffense of No. 15 Montana Western and sustained a heartbreaking, last-

minute 29-22 loss in its first game on Bob Green Field. On Saturday, Tech’s Homecoming, they’ll follow that up against No. 18 Rocky

Mountain College and the nation’s top passing offense at 1 p.m.Neither Western (3-0) nor Rocky (3-1) was ranked heading into the year and, after

falling to resurgent No. 3 Carroll College 21-7 in its second game, a possible 1-3 startis something few imagined for a Tech team which entered the season as reigningFrontier champions and ranked No. 7 in the nation.

“Obviously the guys are a little frustrated, but that’sto be expected,” third-year Tech head coach ChuckMorrell said. “I mean, we have that expectation of going1-0 every week, and we have not succeeded in that thelast couple of weeks.

“I told the guys after the (Western) game: We’re notgoing to get our season back overnight. We’ve got to takeit one play at a time. It starts with a good practice week, and then taking care of the little details going into gameday. That’s been our big focus here the last couple ofdays.”

The Orediggers have plenty to peg their hopes on for Saturday and the rest of theseason, starting with the defense. Tech has harassed opposing quarterbacks to thetune of a Frontier-high 3.2 sacks per game, a league-low pass efficiency rating of83.5 and no passing touchdowns. The Orediggers fought Carroll to a near standstillin the first half, before the Tech offense stagnated and put its defense on the field forthe majority of the final 30 minutes. The Orediggers then led the majority of thegame against Western, before surrendering the go-ahead touchdown with just 1:01on the clock.

“I thought we’ve played fairly consistently defensively this season, except for acouple of spurts, and those are obviously the ones that hurt us and put us behind the8-ball here a little bit,” Morrell said. “It’s obviously tough for us (to lose to Westernlate). We’ve got too many veteran guys on defense to not find a way to come up withthat stop at the end of the game.”

Senior outside linebacker Ryan Jones leads Tech with 25 total tackles and hasadded a pair of sacks, as well as two tackles for loss. Junior linebacker MikeTouzinsky, who was hospitalized with the flu during the Carroll game, is just behindwith 22 total tackles, 2.5 tackles for loss and a sack thus far.

In all, nine different Orediggers have registered at least a half-sack, and thatnumber could increase with Tech facing its first pass-heavy offense of the seasonagainst Rocky. The Battlin’ Bears, though, have allowed just seven sacks throughfour games, including just one to a battle-tested Carroll defensive front last week.

Behind that stellar protection, Bears quarterback Bryce Baker has blossomed inhis third year as starter. The 6-foot-3 junior has completed 70 percent of his passesfor 1,412 yards, 11 touchdowns and four interceptions. He stepped up last weekagainst Carroll with a 30-of-46 day for 384 yards and a pair of scores.

“You can just see there’s a comfort level that maybe (Baker) hasn’t had the lastcouple of years,” Morrell said. “And the receivers are in the right spots. They’ve gotguys making plays for them going down the field, so he’s not afraid of taking somechances because he’s got guys making him right. You can see there’s great commu-nication going on there on the offensive side of the ball. They’re all on the samepage.”

Baker, who likes to stick to the pocket and has rushed for just 6 yards on the year, has made 6-foot-1 wideout Andre McCullouch his top target this season. The

sophomore leads the country with 531receiving yards, and has scored fivetouchdowns while lining up in severaldifferent spots on the field.

“He’s a baller. He’s excellent allaround,” Morrell said of McCullouch.“For a younger guy, he’s really explosive. They find a lot of different ways to getthe ball in his hands — he’s definitely a vertical threat, but you know they’regoing to find him in space on some short

stuff and let him runafter the catch. He’s beena big-time playmaker.”

McCullouch couldfind his match this weekwhen junior Tech cornerback AndreCornell, who has used hisleaping ability and 6-foot frame to haul in aleague-high three inter-ceptions thus far, lining

up across from him.“I barely got to watch a little bit of

film on him, but he’s an aggressivereceiver,” Cornell said of McCullouch.“He’ll go up to get the ball, and that justmakes my job a lot harder. And I’mgonna compete, I’m a competitor. It’sgoing to be two guys going at it. It’sgoing to be a battle.”

Cornell wouldn’t say how much ofthe game he expects to spend lined upacross from Rocky’s sophomore standout, but he added that the rest ofRocky’s receivers — including 6-foot-5senior and Wyoming transfer JonathanAiken — are just as deserving of Tech’sattention.

“There’s definitely some big guys, and they’ve got some athletes,” Cornellsaid. “But we’ve got some athletes, too. Itrust our guys and coach (Morrell) trustsour guys, and I think it’s going to be agood good battle all game long.”

In all, 18 different receivers havecaught balls for Rocky this season, andfive of them — including McCullouchand Aiken — have caught at least 10 witha touchdown mixed in.

“We just need to know our assign-ments against this offense, and every-body’s gotta do their job,” Cornell said.“We’re going in there with the mentalitythat we’re going to come out victorious, and we’ve just got to go 100 percentevery play.

“We know it’s a big challenge for us,and we’re ready for it. Coach is going toprep us all week and, by the end of the

week, we’re going to be ready for them.”There’s no doubt with the

gaudy stats pro-duced alreadythat Rocky is apass-first team, but the Bears havemaintained a level ofbalance with 130rushing attemptson the sea-son.FreshmanscatbackJade Olson, form Malta, hastaken the lead on the ground with 217rushing yards overall and 5.0 per carry. He has also punched in three touch-downs.

“I think, when they get you in somecertain looks, they are going to reallywork on you physically,” Morrell said.“They’re really going to try to soften youup by pounding the ball a bit. But at anytime they can get back into their spreadstuff and start going down the field withit again. They’re a team that, if theyneed to, can score points in bunches. They’ve had a lot of success getting inthe end zone this year.”

INTO THE END ZONEGetting in the end zone is something

Tech is still waiting for its offense to do.The Orediggers’ final possession of lastweek’s first half ended with an incom-plete pass on fourth-and-10 atWestern’s 28-yard line. Then, late in thethird quarter, Tech came away with justa field goal after having a first-and-1o atthe Western 16-yard line with a chanceto push the game to two possessions.Tech has converted just 34 percent of itsthird downs and 37 percent of its fourthdowns thus far on the season.

“This is an offensive league andyou’ve got to be able to put points on theboard,” Morrell said. “You look at Rockyor Southern Oregon or MSU-Northern,there’s a lot of very explosive offensesout there. You’ve got to be able to putthe football in the end zone on a consis-tent basis.”

Tech’s offense saw signs of life in itsfirst home game, when senior quarter-back Brian Schwarzkoph returned to thefield to split snaps with sophomorestarter Herman Tapley in the first half. After Schwarzkoph took advantage of afree play to find sophomore Alec Brayfor a 73-yard touchdown strike and thenled the late drive deep into Western ter-

ritory in the first half, Tapley neverreturned to the game.

Schwarzkoph finished 27 of 46 for293 yards, including a pair of scores toBray, who broke out for 168 yards onseven catches.

“The first couple games was kind oflike: ‘Oh, alright. Three passes.’ But thenwe started opening it up left and rightand the offense was going 100 miles anhour,” Bray said. “When you get a longtouchdown catch like that, it reallyboosts you. It was pretty great, but atthe end of the day we lost the game.

“We just have to battle adversity. Thelast couple of games we’ve left drives onthe field. I mean, we drove down thewhole field and just kind of ended upnot scoring three or four times. We justhave to come down and score every timewe get in the red zone. That’s really whatit comes down to.”

PASSING GAMEWhile the passing game got rolling —

senior and leading receiver Zack Kinneyadded 13 catches for 94 yards and ascore — Tech’s rushing game fell silentfor a second straight game againstWestern. Standout junior running backPat Hansen, who is going for his third-straight 1,000-yard season, managedjust 27 of the team’s 44 rushing yards on13 carries. The inability to run the ballproved even more costly when theDiggers were unable to sustain a latedrive, and eat up enough clock, to pre-vent Western from getting the ball backfor the go-ahead touchdown.

“Did we have some spurts of gettingsome things going? For sure, but there’sno doubt we need to be able to run theball effectively, which we haven’t beendoing the last couple of weeks,” Morrell

said. “Running helps us control theclock a bit and get some of our playmak-ers going. I think we’ve got a long waysto go (offensively), yet.

“We know we’ve got to work towardsbalance. Pat’s an integral part of ouroffensive game plan and we’ve got tomake sure he stays involved throughoutthe course of a game. That’s somethingwe’re focused on this week.”

Morrell also said he wasn’t ready toreveal who would be starting at quarter-back, though he said Schwarzkoph’srunning ability and downfield throwingwere “assets” the team appreciates.

“It’s definitely nice to have

(Schwarzkoph) back with us, but we’re still constantly evaluating which directionwe’re going to go in moving forward,” Morrell said. “I think both guys have certainskill sets which help us out quite a bit. So we spend an incredible amount of timeevaluating and making decisions about which guy needs to be out there at certainpoints during the game.”

Regardless of who starts at quarterback, Bray said the offense believes itsstruggles in the red zone are something that can be fixed by Saturday. He saidmeeting expectations this season for the Diggers will be a matter of getting theoffense, defense and special teams putting together a full game at the same time.

“I know all of these guys have the heart and the desire and passion to want to bebetter than a 3-8 team or anything like that,” Bray said. “We want to be one of thebest teams out here, so we’re going to work to be one of the best. I want ouroffense to be better than (Rocky’s) offense, and I’m sure (the Tech defense) wantus to be better than them, too. We’re going to leave it up to the defense to stopthem, and we’ll get this offense rolling.”

OFFENSE ROLLINGTech’s offense will need to get rolling against a Rocky defense that hasn’t put

up the eye-popping numbers of the offense, but has still exceeded relatively lowexpectations coming into the season. The Bears are fourth in the league with 24.3points allowed per game, and fifth with 416.3 yards allowed.

“Their defense is, up front, I feel like they’re very good as far as getting afterquarterbacks and attacking run games,” Morrell said. “Coach (Brian) Armstrongdoes a great job. They’re very well coached.

“And their linebacking corps has a ton of experience right now with a lot ofguys who have been very good. Travis Bertelsen has been an excellent player forthem going into at least his third year of starting. He’s always been a big-timeplayermaker for them.”

Bertelsen, a senior from Wibaux, is tied with fellow senior linebacker JoshJohnson for the team lead with 36 tackles apiece. The team has registered just onesack on the year, with senior linebacker Austin Fedderson and freshman linemanSeth Swandal credited with a half-sack apiece. Four different players, includingBertelsen have picked off passes for Rocky.

“Their secondary can be fairly conservative at times, but sometimes it’s hard toget guys to their level to start with,” Morrell said.

Morrell admitted that Saturday being Homecoming feels a little odd followinglast weekend’s all-class football homecoming and field-opening ceremonies.

“But it’s great to be home again, there’s no doubt about that,” Morrell said.“Playing at home is certainly an advantage for any team in the FrontierConference. Logging 6,500 milesin six weeks sets teamready to play at home

BY ALAN DALEof The Montana Standard

It was one thing to start a season onthe road, but a six-week long road trip isanother thing.

Call it the voyage of the Ark with anoccasional pit stop or two back at the oldneighborhood to feed the dog, say helloto a few friends, or take a yucky test.

The Montana Tech Orediggers’volleyball team did find time to go toclasses and enjoy the familiar confinesof Butte, but what began exactly 40 daysbefore those ladies finally could play atthe HPER Complex (For more informa-tion on those matches, go towww.mtstandard.com/sports), mayhave done more to define them thananything else.

“It’s the nature of trying to get gamesand our tournament schedules,” Tech’ssecond-year head coach, Brian Solomonsaid. “It worked out well since we had alot of things going on campus-wise andwere fortunate to be on the road at theright times. As young as we were, someof our players didn’t know any better. Ithink it worked out pretty well.”

With an itinerary that would havemade Magellan pause and a journey thatwould have made Noah hang around thestables with more appreciation, theOrediggers ended up logging approxi-mately 6,500 miles via the ground or byair:

■ Two tournaments in Helena: 3 round trips total, 420 miles.

■ One trip to Spokane, Wash.,600 miles

■ One trip to Houston, via air,3,600 miles.

■ One trip to Lewiston, Idaho,840 miles

■ One trip to Dillon, 120 miles■ One trip to Salt Lake City,

840 miles

Once they wrapped things up onSept. 21 with a big five-set match winover Westminster College, theOrediggers, despite all the long hours in

vans or having to eatwhat amounts to apeanut dinner on today’sairlines, stood at 12-4overall and 2-1 in FrontierConference play.

How tough is that?“Everyone’s attitude

on the team, we are all socompetitive, we justwant it so much more,”sophomore Tech liberoKimmy Kavran said.“That kept us going thewhole time. After goingthat far, driving thatmany hours, you don’twant to lose.”

So be it the capital ofMontana or one of theworst known places forhigh humidity —

Houston — the Tech team perseveredand stayed the course.

“Definitely it was hectic for a whilealways being on the road,” Kavranadmitted. “There was a lot of bondingwith our team. We were rooming witheach player and so you get to know eachother better. The road trips or flying toTexas was fun at times too. One timeone of our vans got a flat tire going toHouston before one of our games. Thatwas some excitement right there.”

Yes, they travelled only 15 actual daysout of the 40, but still, knowing youcome home to only get ready to leaveagain does throw off one’s equilibriumand not allow for a comfort zone.

It also creates a bit of hectic ‘Hihoney I’m home’ moments.

“Half the challenge is to get enoughlaundry done so you can turn aroundand leave again,” Solomon said. “We arefortunate enough now with technologywe can do our scouting on the road. Butyour time back home is limited.”

Once back in Butte, especially duringthe final three weeks of travel, the teamhad to focus on schoolwork and just getting a few of those social moments inbefore taking off again.

At least the first half of the seasontook place before classes were in sessionand that took some of the onus off theteam.

“It’s not easy to be on the road forthat many miles or dealing with missing

exams,” Solomon said. “ We won’t be onthe road basically for a month now andwe are in the middle of the season. It’snice to have games coming aroundwhere we won’t be travelling. Exams areincreasing and that’s added stress compared to travelling during non-school times.”

Solomon, who saw a team that couldhave easily been affected by the wearand tear of travel, witnessed a groupcome together and keep themselvesfocused with eyes on the prize.

“We have a real good mix and they areall excited to be here and work on thesame page,” Solomon said. “They areexcited to be home. We were fortunatethat we did have three days off after oneof those weekends and a few timeswhere we had a couple of days off, sothat helped. They need time to take careof schoolwork and their own business. We ran that red line and managed it
