ADAPT AND EXTEND

STAGE 2 DESIGN prOJECT

WITHIN THIS PROJECT I FEEL AS TOUGH I HAVE SHOWCASED MY LOVE OF HAND DRAWING IN A WAY THAT IS ARCHITECTURAL AND CONVEYS MY IDEAS ABOUT THE DESIGN AND

IDEAS AT HAND. WHEN REFLECTING BACK ON THIS PROJECT OVER ALL MY SCHEME MY NOT BE THE MOST LARGE OF ARCHITECURAL FEETS HOWEVER IT AT THIS TAGE I CAME TO

REALISE MY MINMALISTIC INTENTIONS AND IMPLCATIONS TO THE EXTERIOR AND LANDSCAPE.

THE PROJECT BRIEF WAS TO design an adaptation or extension of an exsisting building: i.e. a disused pump house in chatham. we were to design a conference/ THE PROJECT BRIEF WAS TO design an adaptation or extension of an exsisting building: i.e. a disused pump house in chatham. we were to design a conference/

media hub and exhibition space with restaurant and bar facilities. catering and promoting an olympic sport of ones choice. the new additions should count as

t least one third of the area of the exsisting building.

in my design i wanted to create an extenstion that was entirely new and contrasting. the shapes suggest a morphing and developing space. or perhaps a in my design i wanted to create an extenstion that was entirely new and contrasting. the shapes suggest a morphing and developing space. or perhaps a

series of objects that have ‘latched’ onto the exsisting pump pump. my conceptual ideas were of the building as a ship and the extenstion as an iceberge. the

idea of the extention burrowing downways rippling the landscape and mimicong the ,medway. my extention also included resinstating the pump house tower

as it had been removed as technology has evolved and also a more enkeeping wooden paneled extention that kept with the rhythm of the exssiting windows

ad archways for the residence, which is a more private space.

MODULAR

STAGE 3 DESIGN PROJECT

HALLS OF RESIDENCE

in the modular design project i became more acquainted with using the computer to convey my design. this is the rpject were i began to create a design that

was just to some extent ‘multi use’ as younger years like to do but more of a focus on the user and social intereaction of the space and how my design could

benifit their life style. i.e. students in halls of residence.

the breif entailed a group master planning stage to tackle a site within canterbury walls which were to be landscaped and divided amoungst five budding the breif entailed a group master planning stage to tackle a site within canterbury walls which were to be landscaped and divided amoungst five budding

student designers to increase site potentional. we were then to design modular components i.e. the student rooms. then to design the student block and how it

would interact within the masterplan and the site of grey frairs canterbury.

within my design i took my experience of living in halls of residence ANd my feelings of what suited the historical site of greyfrairs in canterbury. the masterpwithin my design i took my experience of living in halls of residence ANd my feelings of what suited the historical site of greyfrairs in canterbury. the masterp-

lan descisions allocated me with the meadow space. i then designed the individual modules to allow privacy and differenct space use compartments, from most

private to most open.; bathroom, sleeping space and open study area. as well as a focus on a main viewpoint from the door to a juilette balcony. designed

were intergrated furniture and privacy screens. my overall building design came from the concept of butterflies within the meadow. a winged for that would

display movement.. as well as the design of social space (the most important and influentual in student accomodation.). therefore i designed equal interior display movement.. as well as the design of social space (the most important and influentual in student accomodation.). therefore i designed equal interior

social zone and exterior. the interior and the kitchen north facing to experience the sunny view and allow a cool space for an active area and the sotuh

facing balcony for solar gain social area. each module has its own baclony space as the floor plane shifts bACK AND FORTH BETWEEN FLOORS.

HOLGA PHOTOGRAPHY INTERGRATION

WITHIN MY FINAL DESIGN PROJECT I MANAGED TO INTEGRATE MY UP AND

COMING LOVE OF ANALOGUE PHOTOGRAPHY. I TOOK PHOTOGRAPHS USING A

COLOUR NEGATIVE FILM ON A TOY HOLGA 120 TO PRODUCE THESE GHOSTLY

IMAGES OF RAMSGATE WHERE I PHOTO,MONTAGED MY BUILDING FROM KEY

VIEWS OF THE SITE. MY DESIGN WAS TO CREATE THE AUSTERE OF A MOD-

ERNIST CHURCH AND I THINK THESE IMAGES HELP CREATE A SOT GLOW

AROUND A REGIMENTED FORM. THE MATERIALS IN LOW OPACITY ARE LIKE A

CHALK STACK, AS MY MAIN MASSING CONCEPT ORGINALL STATES. THESE CHALK STACK, AS MY MAIN MASSING CONCEPT ORGINALL STATES. THESE

VIEWS HELP CREATE AN IMAGE THAT HAS NOT PREVIOUSLY BEEN SEEN

WITHIN THE SITE. AN IMAGE AND STATEMENT OF HOW MY DESIGN PERHAPS

FITS WITH AN ALREADY EXSISTING GHOSTLY GLO OF RAMSGATE..

SKETCH BOOK MENTALITY

THE WAY I LIKE TO DESIGN IS BY SKECTHBOOK. THE WAY I HAVE TO DEVELOP MY IDEAS IT THE WAY I LIKE TO DESIGN IS BY SKECTHBOOK. THE WAY I HAVE TO DEVELOP MY IDEAS IT

TO BE FOEVER JOTTING THEM DOWN TO COMPLIE MORE OF A THINK BOOK THAN ANYTHING.

BY COMMUNICATING CURRENT AND PREVIOUS IDEAS TO TUTORS AND MORE SO TO MY SELF

I CAN MOVE ON QUICK FROM IDEA TO IDEA. MY SKETCH STYLE ALSO CONVEYS INTO EARLY

FINAL WORK (OASIS, DESIGN PROJECT STAGE1 ABOVE AND STAGE 1 SHELTERS PROJECT

BELOW). I HOPE TO CONTINUE THIS THINKING PROCESS WITH PRACTICE AS I FEEL IT IS A

CLEAR REPRESENTATION OF THE WORK STYLE THAT I EXCEL IN.

urban

final stage 3 design project

as can be seen through my portfolio the urban design project is my final and most

developed design scheme as far. i traveled through many stages in design to finally

conclude on a musuem of gothic architecture. using ra,msgates history and my un-

derstanding of modernist architecture i have developed forward into perhaps a

different catagory of design

the brief required a musuem of architectural hsitory in which the v&a plaster

casts are to be displayed. to display the casts in a way that tells a story of

western architecture. the overall design must realte in a cultural context of

ramsgate. we were required to carry out a fesiability study to decide the suitab-

lity between two sites in cantrbury. i chose site 2 (the larger and more proma-

nent of the two)

my design is based on ramsgates heritage and history assocaited with a.w.pugin. by

reading his book ‘remarks of ecclesiastical architecture’ i gathered a feel of his

principles of design and writings behind the gothic revival. i then implemented these

principles in a translation of modern style which is essentually a modernist

church. pugin discusses that “buildings of the same purpose...” should recognised in

terms of the faith in which they were erected, this led my onto think of what a

musuem looks like and the relationship in then forms to buildings of the same pur-

pose. i.e. ramsgate’s musuem of architectural history to the recently built turner pose. i.e. ramsgate’s musuem of architectural history to the recently built turner

contemporary in margate. i then took the literal representation of the contents

to s being in gothic in nature and therefore mostly religious to reflectine that as

which to appear as a chuch also. an indepth design form allowed me to conclude

at the final design illustrated throughout the portfolio.

my personal hobbies and interests:

boxing

in the third yeAR OF KENT UNIVERSITY I HAVE BECAME A MEMEBER OF THE KENT BOXING CLUB. I HAVE RECENT WON

MY FIRST BOUT IN THE CLUBS SHOWCASE. WE TRAIN 3 TIMES A WEEK AND I CAN BALANCE THIS WITH ANY DESIGN

WORK. I HAVE FOUND A REAL PASSION IN BOXING AND I WILL CONTINUE OUTSIDE OF UNIVERSITY FOR MANY YEARS,

WELLBEING

DURING THE SUMMER OF 2011 I TRAINED IN INDIAN HEAD MASSAGE, WHICH ALLOWED ME TO FURTHER MY INTERTESTS IN DURING THE SUMMER OF 2011 I TRAINED IN INDIAN HEAD MASSAGE, WHICH ALLOWED ME TO FURTHER MY INTERTESTS IN

HOLISITC HEALTH AND PATTERNS OF WELL BEING. IN DESIGN WORK AND GENERALLY DAY TO DAY WELL BEING IS ESSEN-

TIALLY KEY TO OUR EXSISTANCE AND LIFE STYLES
