•STD’s are considered an epidemic among teens and young adults▫Epidemic- the occurrence of more cases of
a disease than expected▫STD’s are also know as a silent epidemic
because people don’t often talk about sexually transmitted disease
STD’s spread• Any type of sexual activity that brings an
uninfected person in contact with body fluids from an infected person
• Any sexual activity that results in contact between one person’s genitals and another person’s skin or mucous membrane, in which one of the persons is already infected with an STD
• Direct contact with open sores• A mother to her baby before birth, during
birth, or during breast feeding
STD’s caused by bacteria
•Chlamydia•Gonorrhea•Syphilis•Pelvic inflammatory disease (PID)
Chlamydia
•An STD caused by bacterium that infects the reproductive organs and may cause a mucous discharge
•Be passed from pregnant women to infants during childbirth
•Highest rate of Chlamydia infections in the U.S are found in 15-19 years old
•Treatment: both partners take antibiotics at the same time
Gonorrhea
•An STD caused by bacterium that infects mucous membrane, including the genital mucous membranes.
•Can be passed to infants during childbirth
•Treatment: both partners take antibiotics at the same,
•Becoming more difficult to treat because it is becoming resistant to antibiotics
