•The Allies Situation when the Americans arrived in 1917.

Millions of Allied soldiers had died. Civilians were starving. Russia had withdrawn from the war. Germany had started a new western

offensive.

The Role of American Troops in Victory•Their victories in Belleau Wood and the

Argonne Forest kept Germany from taking Paris and then forced a German retreat.

• Wilson’s plan ran into trouble at Versailles because it was idealistic (“peace without victory”). The other Allies wanted revenge and reparations.

• The Senate rejected the treaty because many were against the League of Nations. ▫They did not want the US to have to defend

other nations.▫They also wanted a case by case vote on

whatever the League of Nations decided.
