COVID-19: Highlights and Situation Overview

• Worldwide, there have been over 30.2 million cases and more than 948,000

deaths attributed to COVID-19.

• According to World Health Organization’s (WHO) Director General on

September 17, more than 170 countries have joined WHO’s COVAX global

vaccine plan to help buy and distribute immunization shots for COVID-19 fairly

around the world.

• Myanmar authorities are advancing to build a field hospital in the commercial

capital of Yangon to cope with a surge of coronavirus infections that doctors

fear threatens to overwhelm the country's health system. Three hospitals in

Yangon, the site of most of the cases and now under a second lockdown, have

been repurposed to treat COVID-19 patients and the government is building a

field hospital with 500 beds on a football pitch.

• Indonesia's capital, Jakarta, plans to double its COVID-19 testing capacity in

the near future according to the Governor on September 17. Jakarta alone

has seen more than 1,000 new daily cases on average this month, more than

double the average in the first half of August. Governor Anies Baswedan said

in an interview that the city of 10 million was conducting about 50,000 daily

coronavirus tests and hopes to "at least reach double from where we are

today". He added that the rapid case rise left him no choice but to bring back

social restrictions that was eased in June, with limits on commerce, transport

and places of worship shall be re-imposed. Indonesia reported 3,635 new

infections and 122 deaths on Thursday, taking total cases to 232,628 and

fatalities to 9,222, Southeast Asia's most deaths.

Travel Advisories (new update/s)

• Philippines: The Philippines is considering allowing more nurses and other

medical professionals to leave for jobs abroad after banning them from travel.

The labour minister has proposed to expand exemptions to those who had

contracts abroad as of August 31.

• Singapore and Thailand have been added to England's and Scotland's COVID-

19 trave list according to authorities on Thursday (September 17). From

Saturday (September 19) 4AM UK time, travellers from these countries will no

longer have to self-isolate for two weeks upon arrival in England and Scotland.

• Vietnam: The country has postponed the resumption of specific international

air routes until further notice as the authorities continue to work on pandemic

prevention measures. Vietnam had earlier planned to resume air routes with

Guangzhou (China), Seoul (South Korea), Tokyo (Japan), Taipei (Taiwan),

Phnom Penh (Cambodia), and Vientiane (Laos) from September 15.

Cases and Deaths as of 18 September 2020

• As of September 18 (2PM, GMT+8), worldwide, there were 30,315,469 confirmed

cases, including 950,607 deaths. Globally, Case Fatality Rate (CFR) is 3.14.

• In China, there were 90,811 confirmed cases with 4,743 deaths, including

deaths in Hong Kong (102) and Taiwan (7). Confirmed cases in China include

confirmed cases in Hong Kong (4,994), Macau (91), and Taiwan (503).

• 585,543 confirmed cases of COVID-19 have been reported in the ASEAN region

with a total of 15,397 deaths
