Holiday Safety TipsThe winter holidays are a time for family, friends and fun… but don’t let the hustle and bustle of the season take away your attention to safety. Keep your holidays happy by following some simple safety tips! Live Holiday Trees●Choose a fresh tree, put it in a sturdy stand and keep it watered.●Place the tree away from all heat sources and out of the way of traffic.●Dispose of the tree properly. Do not burn it in the fireplace!Lighting●Check each set of lights for broken sockets, frayed or bare wires or loose connections. Discard all damaged sets.●Don’t overload electrical outlets. Use no more than three sets of lights per single extension cord.●Only use indoor lights indoors and outdoor lights outdoors!●Always unplug all lights before leaving home or going to sleep.●Timers are a good alternative to leaving holiday lights on for extended periods of time. Candles●Keep candles away from decorations, and place them in sturdy, non-combustible holders.●Never leave lit candles unattended.●Don’t leave children unattended in a room with lit candles.●Battery or LED candles are a safe alternative to wax/flame candles.Cooking●Never leave cooking unattended. If you leave the kitchen while cooking, turn off the stove.●Turn pot and pan handles toward the center of the stove, and out of the reach of children.●If a pan or skillet catches fire, slide the lid or larger pan over the skillet and turn the stove off. ●Keep a fire extinguisher within reach and know how to use it.Smoke DetectorsIf your smoke alarm randomly beeps, your battery needs to be changed. Change your battery right away. If you need help changing your BEEPING battery call the RVFD non-emergency number at 480-471-3504.

Create an Inviting Entry With Colorby Noelle JohnsonThe entry of your home gives guests their first preview of what lies beyond the doors. If the front of your home is rather dull and colorless, the same may be expected to be true inside. One of the standard principles of landscape design is adding color leading to a home’s entry which is attractive to the eye and inviting to visitors. Add Small Colorful Plants Color can be added in a variety of ways and plants are a great way to do this. By adding smaller, colorful plants along the entry path, we create an inviting route to our front door for guests. Arrange plants in groups of three for maximum impact. Adding boulders next to plants adds an additional element that is attractive too. Plants that work well along entryways are those resistant to frost damage, which include Angelita Daisy, Blackfoot Daisy, ‘Blue Elf’ Aloe, Golden Barrel Cactus, and Goodding’s Verbena. Color Throughout the YearFor color throughout the year, select plants with overlapping seasons like Damianita and Penstemon for cool season interest and Lantana for vibrant blooms spring through fall.Flowering annuals have long been a great way to create colorful interest alongside the entry to a home. Flowers can be switched out seasonally and changed from year to year for a new look to outdoor spaces.Color in Shady AreasAdding color in shady entry areas can be especially challenging, as there are few plants that will flower in the shade. One way to get around this is to place a colorful pot in a vibrant shade of blue, purple, or burnt orange. The color comes from the container, which can be planted with a shade loving succulent such as Elephant’s Food or filled with bamboo or curly willow branches.Color in Large Entry AreasLarge entry areas allow for other ways to introduce color. Placing a painted bench or adding colorful pillows to an existing bench creates instant interest and is an easy way to dress up a front entry.By using one, or more, of these colorful tips, you’ll soon have a beautiful entry that accentuates the interior of your home.
