    WHAT ARE HUMAN RIGHTS?

Human rights are something we all share. They are

about recognizing the value and dignity of all

    people.

In learning about human rights, we learn about

ideas of respect, fairness, justice and equality. We

learn about standing up for our own rights andabout our responsibility to respect the rights of

    others.

The rights that someone has simply because he or

she is a human being & born into this world.

A set of performance standards for duty-bearers atall levels of society, but especially organs of thestate.

It grantsjustifiable legal guarantees to everyindividual as a rights-holder.

Because people believe that human rights areimportant, countries make laws to protect them. These laws say that governments cannot take away

people's basic rights. They make sure people who

take away other people's rights are punished.

Where do human rights come from?

Discussion about these ideas can be traced back to theancient civilizations of Babylon , China and India . They

contributed to the laws of Greek and Roman society and arecentral to Buddhist, Christian, Confucian, Hindu, Islamic andJewish teachings.

A significant development in human rights took place in the18th Century, during a time of revolution and emergingnational identities. The American Declaration of Independence(1776) was based on the understanding that certain rights, such as life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness', werefundamental to all people.
