TEXAS ALMANAC 2014 - 2015

Discover the talent and motivation of early Texas artists through the

eyes of J. P. Bryan, who has amassed the Torch Collection, the largest private collection of Texana. He and Torch Col-lection Curator Jamie Christy tell how “French, Spanish, English, and German artists, among so many others, became Texans by either choice or chance, and a large body of their work bears visual testimony to their enduring affection for the region.” Be swept up in the history of the King Ranch and other storied Texas ranches by Texana writer Mike Cox: “Some Texas ranches—past and present—are Lone Star icons, as much a part of the state’s image as bluebonnets, oil wells, or rangy longhorns.” These special articles are just part of TSHA’s Texas Almanac 2014–2015. Every section of the Almanac—from the environment and weather to sports and recreation to gov-ernment and elections—is updated with new data and information, including the latest population figures. Printed in full color, the 67th edition brims with hun-dreds of photographs from every region of the state. Color maps of the state and all 254 counties show relief, major and minor roads, waterways, parks, and other attractions. Each county is profiled with its history, physical features, rec-reation, population, and economy. First published in 1857, the Texas Almanac has long chronicled the Lone Star State and its residents. Available for purchase in Novem-ber, the Texas Almanac 2014–2015 can be preordered now. In partnership with the Association, the University

of North Texas announced the successful completion of fund-raising for the endowment of the Lone Star Chair in Texas History. Michael Monticino, as interim vice president for advancement and director of development of the UNT Foundation, led the university’s fundraising efforts. The first phase in creating the chair was completed by TSHA in March 2011. J.P. Bryan, Chair of the Development Committee and Honorary Lifetime Board Member, led the Association’s effort to raise funds to create the Lone Star Professorship. Bryan’s contributions joined those of John Middleton, Margaret Vonder Hoya, Jeff Haynes, Ralph Thomas, Chris Reeder, and Monroe Garrison in raising $750,000 toward the endowment. Creation of the chair is the fundamental project of TSHA and UNT collaboration that began in 2008. The holder of

the chair serves as Chief Historian of TSHA and oversees its scholarly mission. While ensuring that TSHA will be able to attract the most talented historians in the field to provide scholarly oversight to its programs, the chair also serves to enhance the scholarly mission of the university and strengthen the place of Texas history

in the History Department and in the College of Arts and Sciences. In March 2011, Randolph “Mike” Campbell, TSHA Chief Historian and Regents Professor of History at UNT, was appointed Lone Star Professor of Texas History. With the

Call for Papers for Caldwell Award

Each year the Walter Prescott

Webb Historical Society recognizes excellence in historical research and writing with the C.M. Caldwell Memorial Awards, open to both undergraduate and graduate students with papers on state and local topics. Entries for the 2014 awards are due by January 24, 2014, with award recipients announced at the TSHA Annual Meeting. Cash prizes range from $75.00 to $400.00, and the opportunity to be selected for publication in the Webb Society’s journal, Touchstone. We have seen growth in the number of new schools submitting papers and corresponding growth in the number of papers submitted. Options for undergraduates to publish are rare, so be sure to take advantage of this fine opportunity.

Texas Quiz Show 2013 Footage

Through November, we are rolling out the footage of the 2013 Texas Quiz Show

State Tournament. This year’s show includes contributions of elementary students from across the state as they attempt to stump the middle schools students in the new “Are You Smarter than a Fourth Grader?” round.

Tune in to see which group of middle school students has the best knowledge of all things Texas. The 2013 program was made possible thanks to the generosity of the Summerfield G. Roberts Foundation, University of North Texas, Texas General Land Office Save Texas History Program, numerous book publishers, and TSHA members like you.

The Hoggs of Texas: Letters and Memoirs of an Extraordinary Family, 1887–1906 by Virginia Bernhard arrives in time for holiday giving. TSHA Chief Historian, Randolph “Mike” Campbell describes the latest book from the noted historian:

During the 1890s, Governor James Stephen Hogg headed what could be called the “first family of Texas”—himself, his wife Sallie, their sons Will, Tom, and Mike, and their daughter Ima. Virginia Bernhard has skillfully edited family letters and memoirs to let the Hoggs tell their own story from 1887 until the death of Jim Hogg in 1906. Readers will find themselves being drawn into and through these years with the Hoggs, experiencing the hopes, joys, successes, and sorrows of a special Texas family. It is a fine read.
