Ridgefield Developments March 2015 Volume 12, Issue 4
President’s Message - Jeff Black
A little over a year ago a group of your neighbors informally gathered to
discuss the idea of neighborhood communications and what we could do
to extend, and, thereby, improve these communications. A communica-
tions committee was formed and a few key items were agreed to and
prioritized.
With the launch of Nextdoor came the ability to communicate in real time on any number of
neighborhood topics including social activities, utility questions/issues, contractor questions/
recommendations, crime and safety information, classified offerings, lost and found, and a
whole lot more. The opportunity to post reminders, ask questions, and post thank yous to your
neighbors is easy and reaches all members immediately.
For those who have yet to join this website, I strongly recommend you take the few short mo-
ments to create an account and join us. The process is quite easy and not time consuming.
2. The need to update our own website (www.ridgefieldhomeowners.com) was recognized and
given high priority. An outside website development specialist was hired to provide oversight
and assistance. The site will be managed/administered by residents specifically trained by our
website specialist. With multiple people having editorial access to the site, it is envisioned that
information will more easily be kept up to date. This includes an active current calendar that
can be accessed for all activities, current committee and board minutes and reports, and an easy
way to communicate with committee chairs and board members. Included also are links to Bob
Schmitt Homes and the City of North Ridgeville.
Note that we have removed the on-line neighborhood directory based on privacy issues and rec-
ommendations from our attorneys.
The rebuilt website came on-line in February and can now be accessed using all forms of cur-
rent electronic technology including computers, tablets, and smart phones. In addition to easier
access by all residents, the new website now provides a very positive image to any prospective
homebuyers.
Continued on page 43.
Newsletter
1. A neighborhood social network website, operated by
Nextdoor.com, was started and now includes 330 residents of
Ridgefield. Prior to the launch of our Nextdoor website, if you
wanted to organize an activity, you had to: a) post a notice at the
Rec center which was seen only by those going to the Rec. Center;
b) wait several months for a notice put in the newsletter; or, c) put
the notice on Channel 19 which was only open to TWC customers.

Recipe Corner - Mary Anne Kohl
Hawaiian Cheesecake Bars
2 cups flour 2 eggs
1 cup sugar 2 tsp vanilla
1 cup butter 16 oz crushed pineapple, drained
16 oz cream cheese 2 cups flaked coconut
4 Tbsp sugar 2 Tbls melted butter
4 Tbsp milk
Combine flour, 1 cup sugar and 1 cup butter. Pat mixture into ungreased 9x13-inch pan. Bake at 350° oven
for 14-19 minutes. Cool slightly.
Mix together cream cheese, 4 Tbsp sugar, milk and eggs. Fold in vanilla and drained pineapple. Spread over
baked crust.
Combine coconut and 2 Tbsp melted butter. Sprinkle over pineapple layer. Bake 350° for 15-20 minutes.
Cool and cut into desired size bars.
Crunchy Maple Cinnamon Chickpeas
2 cups chickpeas (cooked/canned)
2 Tbsp coconut oil (you may substitute olive oil)
3 Tbsp maple syrup
1 tsp cinnamon
Pinch of sea salt
Move oven rack to middle of oven and preheat to 400°. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Rinse
chickpeas well and drain as much water as possible (don’t worry about the skins, they make a nice crunchy
addition). Transfer chickpeas to a medium bowl and stir in oil, then add cinnamon and salt. Spread (in a sin-
gle layer) onto prepared baking sheet and place in oven for 40 minutes, stirring every 15 minutes to evenly
crisp. Remove from oven and stir 3 Tbsp maple syrup well into the chickpeas. Return to oven for an addi-
tional 10 minutes, stirring once after 5 minutes. Remove from oven and allow to cool undisturbed. It will
crisp up like brittle. Serve and enjoy!

Welcome New Residents
Don and I have been welcoming new residents to Ridgefield for the past couple years and have really enjoyed this re-
sponsibility. We plan to stay involved but would like to have a discussion with some of our current Ridgefield residents
to generate some new ideas. If you are interested in sharing your ideas and being involved in helping our community
welcome new residents and make them knowledgeable about what Ridgefield has to offer, please contact me by phone
at 440-281-9550, text at 440-724-7246, or send me a message through Ridgeville Next-door. For many, this is the first
time they have lived in a community such as ours and it is important for new residents to understand how this commu-
nity functions to maintain the quality of life and atmosphere for all who live here.
Hope we will see you at the various activities available here at Ridgefield. Be sure to check out all the information
available on Ridgefield Next-door, our website, and at the Recreation Center.

Pool News
Only 3 more months until our awesome pool opens for the season! Opening day at Ridgefield Pool is Satur-
day, May 23 and that just happens to be my birthday! What a nice birthday present that will be! Of course,
what will be great is that all our snow and cold weather will be gone and the sun will be shinning every day by
then! All residents who use the pool during the summer are required to complete a registration form annu-
ally. The form is available at the Recreation Center and on our website. If you plan to take advantage of the
pool, be sure to review the Rules and Regulations which can be found on the website as well. Entrance to
the pool is free to residents and guest tickets can be purchased at the Recreation Center beginning April 1. (no
kidding!) Prior to opening day (that means from April 1 - May 22), the guest tickets are sold at a dis-
count. The price of the guest tickets increase the day the pool opens! You can buy as many guest tickets as
you want and you can carry them over from year to year. Feel free to pay for the tickets with cash or check
which should be made payable to Ridgefield Homeowners Association.
The pool hours are posted in this newsletter, at the Recreation Center, and on the website. We will make every
attempt to have the pool open the stated hours during the pool season which is May 23 (Memorial Day Week-
end) - September 7 (Labor Day) as long as the weather cooperates. Because Memorial Day is early and Labor
Day is late, we have a longer pool season this year. In addition to our regular life guards, I am looking for life
guards or someone willing to to be trained as a lifeguard (must be at least 16 years old), who would be avail-
able during the day when our local students return to school. All our lifeguards are employed by Metropolitan
Pools but we request the ones who work at our pool. I believe many of last year’s lifeguards will be returning
and Aimee Caraszi will again be the Head Lifeguard.
Hope you will join us for the Pool Reverse Raffle on Saturday, May 2 at 6:30 p.m. at the Recreation Cen-
ter. Look for a flyer in this newsletter with all the details. Thanks again to Kathy & Billy Cavett for being in
charge for the 6th year in a row of this fantastic annual event. Paid reservations can be made at the Recreation
Center. Please do not delay in making your reservations because I believe the main board numbers (limited to
100) will be all gone by the end of March. Joyce Cerullo is collecting donations of baskets and gift items for
the Chinese Auction. Hope you will invite your friends and relatives to join us at this fun event with about 200
in attendance. Everyone will have a reserved seat so if you know you want to be seated by someone, please
indicate that when you make your paid reservation or let me know before the day of the event. If you would
like to help in any way, please contact Kathy, Joyce, or me and this can easily be done by sending a private
message through the Ridgefield Next-door website. The Pool Committee who sponsors this fundraiser hopes
you will support this event as the profit has allowed us to purchase picnic tables, chairs including chaise
lounges and adirondack, umbrellas, sun sails, and 2 sets of concrete steps.
Currently, the Pool Committee meets on the second Tuesday of each month at 7 p.m. at the Recreation Center
to discuss activities related to the pool and then recommendations are brought to the Board of Trustees which
meets the third Tuesday of the month for approval. All residents are welcome and encouraged to attend either
meeting. Our next Pool Committee meetings will be held on Tuesdays, March 10, April 14, and May 12.
The water aerobics class will be held during June, July, and August on Monday and Wednesday evenings from
6:15 - 7 p.m. at the far end of the pool. You can pay $2 per session (guests need a guest pool ticket or pay an
additional $2) or purchase a pass which will be available when the pool opens.
If you have any ideas or suggestions please let either Kevin Frederick, Chairman of the Pool Committee, or me
know. We are looking for a wonderful season with lots of residents and their guests enjoying our heated pool.

Get to know Ridgefield Board of Trustee members:
Georgia Awig was elected to the Board of Trustees in October 2014. Her husband, Don, and she
have lived on Quail Court for the past 6 years where Georgia was a Cluster Trustee for 2
years. Georgia grew up in Elyria and prior to moving here, she lived with Don and their 2 children,
Brian and Michelle, in N. Olmsted and Olmsted Twp. They travel frequently to visit their children,
who are now married, and their 5 grandchildren who live in Troy, OH and South Riding, VA.
Georgia graduated from Kent State University where she met Don and they have been married for
40 years. In addition to being a Registered Nurse, she is a Licensed Nursing Home Administra-
tor. She worked various nursing positions for 24 years including 10 years as a Nursing Instruc-
tor. She retired from her position as Administrator of a Home Health Care Agency in 1997 and has been a Mary Kay
Sales Director for the past 18 years. She utilizes her professional knowledge to serve as a patient advocate for friends
and family.
In addition to serving on the Pool and Social Committees at Ridgefield for the past few years, she volunteers at Corner-
stone of Hope and Dress for Success. She is a member of Professional Network Group, Senior Network, Order of the
Eastern Star, and N. Ridgeville Chamber of Commerce. She can frequently be seen at various meetings and activities at
the Recreation Center and Pool. You might also see her riding her bike though out the development in warmer weather.
Because of her love for Lorain County, North Ridgeville, and Ridgefield, Georgia Awig has decided to run for the 3rd
ward Council Seat which will be vacated by Dr. Ron Arndt at the end of this year. She welcomes your comments and
suggestions.
Watch for articles on Harvey Levitt and David Wilson in future Ridgefield Newsletters. They also recently became
members of our Board of Trustees.

What Can I Do to Help a Neighbor? By Mary Anne Kohl
You may already be aware of the story of Glen Ailport, our resident
plumber. He has been posting updates on Nextdoor Neighbor since last
January. To learn more and keep up-to-date on happenings in our neighbor-
hood, join NDN, it’s a free, secure website for residents of Ridgefield only.
Simply google Nextdoor Neighbor Ridgefield in your browser. Keep in-
formed and up to date on local happenings.
In January Glen posted a plea for help. After having 10 surgeries in three
years for osteo-arthritis, which has caused the bones in his hands to disinte-
grate, he finds himself no longer able to perform the job he so loved. Even
Pat, his wife, has gone with him on occasion to do some of the things he’s
no longer able to perform.
If you don’t know Glen, let me fill you in on his background. Some years
ago we had an article in the Newsletter about him and his military service.
You can refer to that article if you can find it or to summarize: Glen
enlisted in the army at the age of 19 and by the age of 21 was chosen to
serve under the European Command in Berlin, Germany, working with the
British and French Military to protect the German citizens’ freedom from
the Eastern Block. In 1981, under President Ronald Reagan he received a
Presidential Citation for his service. Subsequently he received his staff ser-
geant stripes as well as World War II Occupation Medal, Good Conduct Medal, Air Assault Wings, Master Jump
Wings, Jungle Training Badge, and Expert Weapons Badge, as well as commendations from the French and British gov-
ernments. He left the military after 12 years of service and moved to North Ridgeville.
I met with Glen and asked him what brought him to the position he’s now in, that of needing our help. Here is what he
told me. Glen’s been a plumber for 30 years, 13 or 14 of those with Bob Schmitt. There he was covered by insurance.
When he left Schmitt’s employ, he became self employed and decided since his family was young and healthy, he
would not buy insurance. If he needed medical attention, he would go to the Veteran’s Hospital in Lorain. Sure
enough, in 2011, when all his issues began, that’s exactly where he headed. After a botched surgery and many referrals
to other surgeons in several hospitals during that two year period with no insurance, he found himself with $191,000 in
medical debt. He’s seen about 15 different doctors, one who said, “you have the bones of a 90-year-old!” (Remember
he was not even 56 at the time.)
Glen’s had surgeries on his feet, hands, and wrists but continues to have multiple issues with his knees, shoulder and
back. He is now a high-risk patient on his wife Pat’s health insurance, with a $6,000 deductible. That amount had to be
paid before his October surgery and again in January, that’s $12,000 within a 4-month period!
He does still have a plumbing company which employs one person. You can find his ad as a flyer in this newsletter. If
you’re wondering, I asked him, “what is the prognosis?” According to one doctor, he could be in a wheelchair by the
age of 62. Regarding his most recent surgery however, they have done all that can be done, having given him a com-
plete wrist replacement. He will be in a full arm cast for about 15 weeks to help things heel in position. If the body
starts to reject the parts implanted, they will have to amputate his forearm. He takes multiple prescriptions to prevent
rejection.
Glen is an honest, generous, caring person. Someone who would often perform plumbing favors without charge. He
now finds himself in a position which he is not comfortable with, that of asking for support from his friends and
neighbors.
Glen will probably never be able to use his left hand again and although he still can run a business, his income has been
severely cut. Yes his wife Pat works and provides for the families insurance needs, but mounting medical bills have
made it difficult to provide for his family of three teenage children.
Most of us are probably on Medicare. Do we worry much about deductibles or co-pays? We all have problems, but is
raising three young children one of them? If you’d like to help out, you can contact Glen at 440-454-4628, or send a
check to: Glen Ailport, 8751 Mallard Circle, NR. Glen wishes to thank all those who have so generously donated thus
far. Please keep him and his family in your prayers as he does you.

mulching, edge beds, & apply bed control for weeds.
Core Aeration starting at $40 lots under acre, Thatching starting at $70
Lawn tips:
Mowing- Never cut more than 1/3 of the grass blade at any one time.
*Change directions each time you cut the grass, so you don’t get ruts in the lawn.
*Sharpen mower blade at least two times during the season, or you will damage the grass blade by not getting a clean cut. When
grass blade is damaged you weaken blade and then lawn gets disease and insects problems.
Compacted Soil – High traffic, children playing & cutting grass all contribute to compacted soil. Nothing grows well in compacted
soil.
Core aeration helps break up compacted soil and allows the lawn to breathe. It also allows fertilizer and water to get down to root
zone.
Thatch – More than ½ inch of thatch is too much. A good way to tell if you have too much thatch is when you walk on it, if it feels
like a carpet or you can’t feel the soil under your feet.

Club Corner - Mary Anne Kohl
About 73 people enjoyed games of all kinds at the first Polar Bear Card Party held on January 11th. Georgia
did a terrific job of organizing this event. There was plenty of food and desserts, door prizes and most of all
fun! Don’t miss the next one.
Canasta meets the first and third Thursday of every month, year around, at 7:00 pm in the Rec Center. Each
table sets the “rules” for that night. Sometimes we have refreshments! We’re usually done by 9:00 pm. If
that’s your favorite TV night, set your DVR! Newcomers are always welcome, we’re patient and will help
you learn. We’re there for the social aspect!
Call me at 731-3229 for more info.
Join us at Bunko, an easy to learn game of dice. Cost is $5.00 and the money will go towards prizes that
night. Coffee and light refreshments will be available. This is really a hoot and I highly recommend it. The
next dates are March 25th, April 22nd, and May 27th, so mark your calendars and meet us at the Rec Center at
7:00 pm. Call Barb Safarz, 748-0028, for more info.
A lot of interest has been shown for a Scrabble group. If you call Louise at 440-864-2530, she will get one
organized. You can decide where to play, either at the Rec Center or at your home, weekly, monthly, daily
(lol)! All levels are invited.
