Enjoy your bike-holiday in Selva Gardena and our bike hotel!

KEEP CALMAND RIDETHE DOLOMITES!

Page 3: Ride the Dolomites Magazin - English

It’s finally springtime! Get out there! The poor snow this winter does have its plus sides: we can already start rocking the best trails right now. That goes for the Dolomites too.

The good thing about biking at the start of the season is that the trails belong to the bikers alone. There are also trails that are completely deserted even in high season. You just have to look for them. Our new tour, the “Wild East Tour” is one of those tours. You can find out more about the “Wild East Tour” in our magazine. The Bike Region Val Gardena and the valleys around the Sel-la Group are also investing a lot of money in building trails this year. Come and see for yourselves. You’ll also find high quality interviews in our magazine. Thomas Raith, man-aging director of Derby Cycle and Focus, tells us all the big news from our collaborative partner. Sports photographer Harald Wisthaler explains what it takes to make a good bik-ing photo and shares lots of other photographic tips.I hope you enjoy our magazine and “Ride the Dolomites”!Günther

THOMASRAITH:

„Our bikes are competition-ready

machines that make riding a real pleasure“

[interview]THOMAS RAITHHello Thomas. As the managing director of the Derby Cycle Group, could you please explain the philosophy of the company to our reader?

Thomas: It’s actually very simple: our motto is “Derby Cy-cle – moving you forward” – we want to get every single bike-lover in the saddle and produce a bike that is ideal for them. It doesn’t matter whether you’re into mountain bikes, racing bikes or e-bikes. Derby Cycle is Germany’s leading bicycle manufacturer and covers nearly all of the segments with the distribution of the brands Focus, Kalkhoff, Raleigh, Univega, Cervélo and Rixe.

Cycling should be a real experience – we deliver the mod-els to make it so. And we continue to develop them further. That’s why innovation is of such great importance to us.

This is particularly evident in the area of e-bikes, where we already caused a big stir back in 2011 with the launch of the very first mid-drive bike with back-pedal brake in the world. With the next-generation Impulse 2.0 we are not only setting new benchmarks in terms of safety, riding comfort and per-formance, but are also serving the growing e-mountain bike segment with an off-road model.

But we are also continuing to move our innovations forward in purely pedal-powered bikes. Here we are concentrating especially on the sport segment and high-quality racing and mountain bike models. In the racing bike sector, for example, we have the FOCUS Izalco Max. At under 6 kg it is one of the lightest racing bikes in the world and has already been ridden with great success at the Tour de France by our professional sponsored team AG2R La Mondiale.

As a passionate mountain-biker, our mountain bikes are par-ticularly dear to me. Just as with racing bikes, the demand for high-quality, innovative models is growing all around the world. We have a lot of things still in the pipeline this year.

And to be honest, I’m already looking forward to riding one of our new models in the Dolomites in July with the guides from Hotel Linder.

FOCUS Bikes also belongs to the Derby Cycle Group. Why should a mountain-biker choose FOCUS Bikes?

Thomas: FOCUS was founded by Mike Kluge with the intention of never being satisfied - even as a multiple cyclocross World Champion - with the level of quality that had been achieved.

Page 6: Ride the Dolomites Magazin - English

[focus bikes]We have stayed true to this philosophy to the present day. Our bikes are competition-ready machines that make riding a real pleasure. This is what makes our bikes stand out: developed with the help of professionals in order to give our customers a bike that can help them handle any trail or race.

But we don’t only make bikes for elite sportsmen. FOCUS also has the right model for those coming back to the sport or beginners who want to have fun with their bike.

Just take a look at the new models we’re bringing out in the spring and summer. Fun and innovation in its purest form. Full-suspension 27.5 wheels, 120mm and 160mm suspen-sion travel, with carbon or aluminium frames that will set new benchmarks. We’re particularly proud of SAM: a full-suspen-sion mountain bike with 160mm suspension travel that has already won plenty of races with our FOCUS Trail Team.

Team manager Fabian Scholz, who was involved full-time as an engineer in the development of the bike, continues to test it to its limits as a rider in international competitions. To great success – he won the Specialized-SRAM Enduro Series just last year. He also offers courses on riding techniques here at Hotel Linder. I can truly recommend them. It’s unbe-lievable what he can do with that bike.

You were at Bike Hotel Linder last year and have al-ready ridden in our Bike Region. In your opinion, which FOCUS model is the right one for the Dolomite region?

Thomas: The FOCUS SAM is the ideal partner for lovers of Enduro tours. This bike offers both control and comfort. Its geometry is designed especially for fast downhill rides where the rigidity of the frame is particularly advantageous.

If you’re still not convinced, you can see the bike in action with Fabian Scholz as part of the Enduro Dolomite Camps. But I can assure you: the SAM is a dependable off-road part-

ner with riding characteristics that leave nothing to be de-sired. If you prefer fast cross-country routes, then you should look no further than the FOCUS Raven 29R.

For cyclists who want to explore the terrain with electric sup-port, we suggest the FOCUS Thron with 120 mm full sus-pension – a dependable partner for lots of off-road fun. In general, we try to fulfil the wishes of the whole mountain biking community with our various FOCUS MTB models.

The Dolomites offer exactly the right terrain to show off our bikes’ strengths. So if you want to experience the breath-tak-ing trails here with added intensity, you’re sure to find the right choice among our bikes. And you can also test out our bikes here at Hotel Linder! Bike Hotel Linder and Focus have entered into a col-laboration starting this summer. What do you expect from your collaboration?

Thomas: We want to get people into cycling and open up a door to a very special cycling experience. Which region offers a better atmosphere and surroundings than the Dolomites? Bike Hotel Linder offers top-class mountain biking experienc-es and that’s why we decided to collaborate.

The range of camps and tours on offer is just as diverse as our bikes. We’re really looking forward to the guests at Hotel Linder taking advantage of the chance to test our bikes and make their own impressions of the quality and fun they offer.

Even the guides are mightily impressed and can give tips to those interested. So why not leave your own bike in the ga-rage and try something new. In addition, we offer tours together, in which we give tips on improving your riding technique.

For me mountain biking has always represented much more than just sport. It’s a kind of self-fulfilment and is generally good for your health. The fitter you are, the better you feel. And that connects us with Hotel Linder.

What do you think of the Val Gardena Bike Region / Dolomites?

Thomas: I’ve been into mountain biking for over 25 years now, but the Val Gardena Bike Region still sets my pulse rac-ing every time. The Dolomites are unique and offer the ideal conditions for mountain biking. There’s a broad range of trails. Whether challenging or easy-going, hard-core Enduro tours or narrow Flow Trails,

there’s something for everyone here. The Val Gardena is di-verse and varied. That’s what I really appreciate and what distinguishes Val Gardena from other regions. All degrees of difficulty are covered, while the rugged mountain backdrop provides the fitting ambience.

Not to forget: if your stomach starts to rumble, you’ll always find pastures and chalets to help you quickly recharge your batteries with their idyllic locations and good food.

FOCUS engineer Fabian Scholz founded the FOCUS Trail Team, with brothers Markus and Tobias Reiser, in 2013. His motivation: to test the FOCUS SAM to its limits in competition.

As FOCUS developer and team rider in one, Fabian’s impres-sions and experiences from the trail flow directly into the con-tinuous development and construction of new projects.A young and successful project, as not only did the FOCUS SAM prove itself worthy, but the team, competing during its first year in both national and international races, cleared the board with titles and successes.

Fabian Scholz won the overall category of the Special-ized-SRAM Enduro series. Marcus Reiser took third place, while Tobias Reiser won the final stage in Leogang, as well as becoming German run-ner-up in 2014.

NEW SINGLE TRAILS FOR NEW

EXPERIENCES

For years the valleys around the Sella Group

have been investing heavily in the building

of trails.

[trail news]NEW SINGLE TRAILS

Work on many new trails around the Sella Group will begin in spring. We’ve put together an overview of the new single trail routes for the coming bike season.

Page 11: Ride the Dolomites Magazin - English

LET’S SHRED SOME TRAILS!

VAL GARDENA:

Val Gardena will open three routes in summer 2015. There’s a new trail from Passo Sella, with a length of 4.5 km, offering an altitude difference of 600 metres. The route has been relocated to the right-hand side of the road and thus puts you even closer to the Sella Group. A real highlight in terms of landscape. A new 6-km-long trail takes you from Passo Gardena towards Selva Gardena with an altitude difference of 550 metres.

Single Trail Vallongia:There’s new blood for the free-ride trail at Ciampinoi, with a second variant at Vallongia. This trail is 2.3 km long with an altitude difference of 460 metres and will also be used as one of the stages of the Italian Enduro Championship on June 28.

ALTA BADIA: The well-liked single trail, Frara, which you’ll probably know as the “cow trail”, will begin at Passo Gardena this summer, meaning the less appetising asphalt road to Pisci-adu car park is no longer used. The length of the trail is 3 kilometres this year, with an altitude difference of 510 metres.

PORDOI: There are also changes at Pordoi. The existing trail has been extended and leads to Pont de Vauz. The work on this trail began in the autumn. By the summer the trail will be 2.7 kilometres long, with an altitude difference of 385 metres.

Page 12: Ride the Dolomites Magazin - English

ALTA BADIA: Singletrail „Frara“ from Passo Gardena

ARABBA: Bec de Roces, Pordoi Pordoi - Pont de Vauz

VAL DI FASSA: Freeride Park Belvedere

The Sellaronda tour is open from June 20 to September 20 this year and can only be ridden with a local guide!

The Sellaronda is expanding and will be offering new trails and descents from summer 2015!

[interview]HARALD WISTHALERHello Harald. Please introduce yourself to our readers.

Harald: Yes, hello to everyone, my name is Harald Wisthaler, I’m 28 years old and I live in Innichen. I work as a freelance photographer, especially in the outdoor and sports fields.

You’re very well known as a photographer. When and how did you first come into contact with pho-tography?

Harald: I got an analogue camera from my grandpa with a b/w film more than 10 years ago. I was immediately im-pressed by the capturing of moments, and a digital camera soon followed, the technical side of which fascinated me in particular as a young man.

How did you learn photography?

Harald: Mostly as an autodidact and by reading lots of books. I also had the opportunity to go out with photographers who were already successful and I learnt a lot there.

I attended courses and workshops from the beginning, and I still do in order to continue my development.

You have photographed some big events, such as the Sellaronda Hero Marathon and you’re a sport pho-tography specialist. What is specifically important in sports/bike photography?

Harald: I think, like in many other areas, the most important thing is that you have passion for what you do. Of course, it’s

„It’s an advantage in sports photography if you

know the sport and can always predict a bit what

might happen next...“

Page 19: Ride the Dolomites Magazin - English

an advantage in sports photography if you know the sport and can always predict a bit what might happen next… And you also know if a moment looks “good”, especially from the perspective of the sportsman.

Is it helpful when photographing bikers that you ride yourself?

Harald: Like I said in the last answer, it’s very helpful and also necessary, otherwise you would have to ask the biker whether the moment was good from their perspective too – but that’s not possible when you’re reporting events and so you have to decide yourself…

What’s the difference between a snapshot and a “real photo”?

Harald: Henri Cartier-Bresson said, “A good photo is a photo that you look at for more than one second.”

I think this is true especially because you look at a good photo for more than 1 second when it tells a story, it conveys the

emotion of the motive or of the photographer, or when it can inspire someone to reflect.

What are the 5 most important points that go into making a really good photo?

Harald: Good question - a lot of the time it’s a matter of taste. I can’t really name 5 points that are important for mak-ing a photo, but I’d begin with a camera :-) no matter whether it’s digital and the newest model or old - or analogue.

The choice of perspective is one of the most important points for me and shouldn’t be underestimated.

I’d say the moment is the most important point. If I still had to name 5 points: the image should have a clear message and make sure that there’s nothing to distract the viewer in the background…

„A good photo is a photo that you look at for more

than one second“Henri Cartier-Bresson

[trail tip]WILD EAST TOUROur new trail leads us through the Dolomites’ wild east to Cortina. Cortina is well known in the Alps for its classy boutiques and luxurious hotels.

Page 21: Ride the Dolomites Magazin - English

Beyond the popular city centre, the region around Cortina offers a trail and tour paradise that is second to none. The great thing is that the nature here is still really wild – and thus the name “Wild East Tour”.

The “Wild East Tour” starts nice and early with a shuttle trip over the Passo Gardena to Alta Badia and then to Val Parola. After almost an hour we reach Passo Falzarego where the “Wild East Tour” begins.

The panorama at Falzarego Pass gives you an idea of what awaits. Wild, breath-taking nature and trail fun. From the very first descent you’re into it. Challenging, in places damp passages lead to the valley station of the Cinque Torri chair lift.

Once the first descent has been negotiated, the chair lift brings us right up under the Cinque Torri. The view from the mountain station is breath taking. The Cinque Torri, Falza-rego, Averau and Nuvolau are at your feet.

Here we have two possibilities to choose from. Either a steep climb up to the Averau alpine hut or a very techni-cal route towards the valley. Hairpins, high steps and flow passages await you on this challenging trail. The second lift ride to Cinque Torri follows.

By now you should be sweating as the steep ramps lead up to the Averau alpine hut. But all your exertions are quickly forgotten with the amazing views of the Civetta and Mar-molada. Next is the descent towards Santa Lucia. The first alpine piece isn’t the easiest technically. The second part is a great wild off-road flow trail, ending at Colle Santa Lucia. In Colle there’s time for a short lunch break with pizza.

Refuelled, a taxi and then lift brings us comfortably onto the Averau. From here an adventurous trail on alpine ter-rain leads to Scharte. The following descent to Falzarego isn’t the easiest, with some passages of carrying to be expected.

The eastern part of the Dolomites is very suitable for All Mountain and Freeriders and offers a large variety in high mountain and flowing trails.

RIDE THEDOLOMITES:

„The landscapes of the Dolomites are unique

and the range of tours on offer in our Bike Region

is enormous.“

Page 23: Ride the Dolomites Magazin - English

We like to offer you something more and something new every year. As always, we’ve expanded our range of tours, with the “Wild East Tour” being added to this summer’s pro-gramme.

And that’s not all. We’ve got two more tours in mind that we’re going to test out for you and might even roll out this summer.

One of these tours takes us to Arabba. This alpine village offers bikers great facilities and tour possibilities. The second planned tour leads us into the Eisacktal.

As soon as the snow has cleared from higher locations, the adventure begins.

Stay tuned!

[speed interview]DANIEL SCHÄFERHello Daniel. A huge section of our biking community already knows you. Can you introduce yourself to the rest?

Daniel: I grew up in Chiemgau, so I’ve had a connection to nature and Bavaria from early on.

My weekends have always revolved around sport and I don’t like short notice changes of plan. Fantasy is my strength and parties my weakness.

Nonetheless, I’m reliable and grounded, even though I love being unrestrained and up in the air.

You’ve ridden in Val Gardena a few times. Describe this valley in 4 keywords/sentences

Daniel: Endless riding/nice variety between built and natu-ral/panorama/welcomes MTB tourism despite the sensitive Dolomites.

What does Val Gardena need to become the perfect biking region?

Daniel: A decent practice park and a trendy place to get together in the evenings.

„I’m Dan and I like getting

The Dolomites Style Camp at Bike Hotel Linder with you as the professional. What awaits the participants?

Daniel: Mostly riding, riding, riding with some technique stops at selected locations, e.g. steps or drops, curves... Tips and tricks on biking technique, but some posing tricks like the front wheel pivot too, for style. Of course, there’s also the whole Italian mountain pro-gramme, with good weather, good food, that chalet feeling and cable cars.

Our goal is for every participant to refine their riding tech-nique, have fun and to get down any S2 to S3 trail safely.
