West Auckland is a great place to get on your bike.This loop connects the dreamiest cycling destinations out West and offers a little something for all riders. Love a challenge? Spend a few hours on the whole 33 km loop. Bringing the kids along? Swap the traffic for trees on an off-road stretch. Only have an hour to spare or keen to skip that big hill? Hop on and off the train to just do your favourite stretch!

All bike rides should be rewarded with an ice cream or a cuppa. So pop in to one of the Bike-Friendly Cafes marked on the map, show them this map and get a tasty deal (see other side for more information).

We don’t offer a certified bike mechanical repair service, but we work alongside you to develop your skills and knowledge so that you can freely enjoy the benefits of cycling. This is a short on-road stretch with a few dedicated cycle lanes. Take care at the busy roundabout in Avondale.

Waterview Shared Path 2.4km, shared path

This is a wide, off-road shared path that goes through a few parks as well as across the Unitec grounds.

Northwestern Cycleway 7.4km, cycle path

This is a dedicated cycle path that runs along the motorway. The open stretches can be quite windy.

Twin Streams Shared Path 7.6km, shared path

This is a wide, off-road shared path that goes through lovely parks and follows a stream. Use the traffic lights to cross Great North Road, the path continues across the bridge.

Henderson Valley 1.9km, on-road cycling

This is a short on-road stretch with a slight incline, access to the Oratia Stream Shared Path is just past the bridge across the Oratia Stream.

Oratia Stream Shared Path 1.6km, shared path

This is a wide, off-road shared path that follows a stream and goes underneath Sunnyvale train station.

Sunnyvale - New Lynn 8.7km, on-road cycling

This is a long on-road stretch with quite a bit of elevation. Take care on busy roads and intersections and use the sidewalk where needed.
