Special Learn to Sail Edition

Welcome to our Club

Welcome to all of you learning how to sail. Sailing is a wonderful sport offering a variety of experiences depending on what you like – whether it is just travelling along at a gentle pace enjoying the natural beauty of your surrounds, or whether it is going extremely fast, racing against other extremely fast boats. We will be learning to sail in three different types of boats. Firstly

a boat called an O’Pen Bic (Bic for short). These are the boats in the picture above with the numbers on the sails, usually sailed by one person. Secondly a boat called a pacer which is larger than the bic and mainly uses two sails (see the photo below of the boat with the blue sails). Pacers are usually sailed with two people but can be sailed with more. Finally a boat called a Nacra 350 catamaran which has two hulls and which is sailed with two people (see the photo with the boat with sail number 595).

Although some learn-to-sailors might be experiencing a few nerves about aspects of learning how to sail (which is perfectly normal), the club has very experienced instructors who will show you how to do things. It really doesn’t take too long to gain the basic knowledge needed to sail a boat. However, it is very important to listen carefully to the instructors at all times. Part of this process will be knowing the names of the various parts on a boat, learning how to set up (rig) a boat, and knowing how to de-rig a boat (put it all away again).

Calendar of Lessons (Weather permitting) Week 1 – 23rd September (miss one Sundays due to school holidays) Week 2 – 7th October (miss one Sunday due to club Regatta Week 3 – 21st October Week 4 – 28th October Week 5 – 11th November (miss one Sunday as club is away) Week 6 – 25th November Week 7 – 2nd December Week 8 - 9th December
