Basic Race Management Seminar OCBC hosted a Race Management workshop on Feb 25. Course leaders were Wayne Cou-lon, our Area Race Officer, from Plano, Bruce Greene, a national race officer from San Diego and Gil Greenwood, who has won the St Petersburg award, at Windycrest. Twenty seven folks participated in the workshop that was designed for certification for Club Race Officer. Although only nine were interested in taking the test for certification at the time they registered, twenty five ended up taking the test and twenty two passed. Our program was one of the three newly revised workshops designed to enhance the education of those attending and recognizing folks who are interested in further recognition for their knowledge of good race management. Also attending the workshop was Jack Gierhart, the executive director of US SAILING, who also passed the test. OU Sailing Team helps with Spring Cleaning!

OU Sailing Team Members, Kyle DeFreitas, Jacob Wallace, Isaac Pato, and Shelby Aughtry assist Pascal Aughtry with maintain-

ing, repairing, and installing the Purple Martin houses on the club grounds. The Martin houses were originally donated and main-

tained for many years by long time member, Dr. David Brinker. Purple Martins migrate from South America (mostly from Brazil)

and return to the same nesting area each spring. The Scouts, the mature males, have been spotted in the Okla. City area during the

last week of February checking on housing and available food supply. They will signal to the rest of the martins that it is safe to

return. Martins eat only insects and are known to eat mosquitoes, so we may have them to thank for our mosquito-free evenings at

the boat club. Thanks to Pascal Aughtry for his donation of a new house to replace an old one, and two new telescoping poles that

will make annual cleaning much easier!

Rear Commodore's Report The calm before the storm…… It has been quite the last month but the time has come to get busy. I have schedule a work party on March 24th, which is the forth Saturday of the month. We have a lot to do around the club house and grounds. We have docks to re-pair, dry slips to clean up, maintenance on the club house, and several other items to take care of. If you know of something or would like to see something done around the club, please do not hesitate to send me an email with the request ([email protected]). I have been asked when we are going to turn the water back for the power washers and the answer is after the last freeze. Now who can tell me when that s is going to be and I will turn the water back on after that. Projects that are in progress:

Weather Tower update, we were rejected on our foundation inspection because our drawing was not stamp by the permit depart-

ment that they approved, I thought. Also the inspector said I need to get an engineer letter staying that the foundation would

be adequate for the tower. So Ken Wert is taking the drawing and plans to see if he could get one of Manhattans Engineers

to sign off on it for us.

The other is the vent hood for the stove. We removed half of it last week but still need the go back and get the exhaust fan

from the roof once we get the close-out cover for the hole in the roof. Once we have everything on site we will evaluate the

system and see what we need to do to install it (Willard).

I hate repeating myself, but, as the Re”mind”ar Commodore, I want to take the time to remind everyone to put their names on

their property (boats, trailers, etc..) and mow or trim their grass and small trees in their assigned dry slips (this includes the center-

board lot too). Cold weather is upon us and everyone wants to run a heater on their boats. Unfortunately, we do not have enough

electrical outlets or the amperage for everyone to run heaters year around. We ask that you be considerate to the club and your

neighbors and use only the minimum power needed to keep your engine from freezing (such as a 100 watt drop light).

Vice Commodore’s Report

Wow! What great weather we have had this winter. Many OCBC members have been taking advantage of the nice afternoons, sailing on Lake Hefner’s recently acquired water. The construction of the sea wall is complete, with only landscape, sod and some other details yet to be accomplished. (Some help will be requested at the General Membership Meeting.) This project has been a heavy burden for the entire club. So many people have spent so much time and energy putting together and implementing the plan, and I would like to thank them all. Great job! We should be clean and green by Splash Day. We are looking at the possible designs for floating docks and a ramp access to make landing boats along the wall a convenient procedure. The monies are in place to ac-complish this additional piece of the project. In other business, the beach area will get a makeover, new sand and sod at the top. The centre board parking and beach will be a busier place this summer, as we are increasing the youth sailing program, and the collegiate sailing grows in numbers. Some new decking and other improvements are being considered. Any one that wants to suggest a design can contact me with sketches or plans. Also any member who owns a derelict center board or catamaran needs to remove or repair their property (or give it to some-one that will). There is not enough space for the active sailors to allow for storage of unusable vessels. Please, please, please take care of your own junk so the Rear Commodore does not have to do it for you. The new website is ready to launch. It has a new look and feel, but has all the stuff that we are accustomed to, plus additional fea-tures. There have been some questions about the security of the new site floating around. The security has been vastly improved over the old system, which was designed a decade ago. The old site has been an asset that we all have appreciated. Kudos to Bayless Kirtly for building and maintaining it for so many years. This new website will serve the Club and Members well and will be easy to use for future Boards of Governors and webmasters, whoever they may be. Summer is almost upon us. Racing starts with the Splash Day Regatta. There is time to prepare your boat and participate in this prestigious first race of the season. This is always a fun event, so try to come and enjoy the competition. Wednesday night racing starts three days later, May the second. After all the missed races last year, I’m sure we have many anxious sailors ready to take to the water. We really need to promote participation whenever possible. Thank you to all the sailors who are actively promoting their fleets. I think we are all looking forward to a great season. That is all I have for now, Thanks much.

2012 WINTER EDUCATION SERIES

Hoist Seminar Re-Scheduled for Sunday March 11

Due to cold weather and high wind on February 12, the seminar How to Properly Use the OCBC Hoists

had to be re-scheduled for Sunday, March 11. The seminar begins at 1400 hours (2:00 p.m.) and will be

presented by Jeff Burke and Mike Hahn. Although everyone is encouraged to take advantage of this op-

portunity to re-familiarize yourself with our hoists, the Membership Committee wants to remind all pro-

visional members they are required to attend.

Commodore’s Report

Seawall Project - We're Almost There For those of you visiting the club regularly, you've seen that Manhattan has left and that we're down to the landscaping and beautifi-cation aspect of finishing up the seawall. (We are still withholding 10% from Manhattan's payment as they address the punch list items.) What's left to be done? Lighting, electric, conduit, soil remediation, sod, and the planting of shrubs/trees. And speaking of which, check out the following pictures of our youth and collegiate sailors helping to get everything ready for Splash Day. (Take special notice of our own Carole and Jack Woods, David Bass and Jake Dragoo leading the charge. Good work guys!

The Social Scene February brought us a couple of informal Valentines Day Parties (sponsored by the Handicap Fleet and the ballroom dancing group) as well as Mardi Gras. Be sure to check out John Walters site for pictures - he's doing a great job. Coming up on March 17th is the Annual St. Patrick's Day Party - organized by our own Bayless Kirtley. It's an event you certainly don't want to miss! Finally, Splash Day is just around the corner - Saturday, April 28th, starting at 1600 hours - with music and dancing beginning around 1830.

Race Management Seminar February 25th was a banner day for OCBC. We held the Area F Race Management Seminar and over 20 race enthusiasts attended, with most taking the test and all but two passing (anecdotal - I don't know for sure, but I'm certain we get the results shortly). Thanks go to Gary Sander for organizing same - and be sure to read his follow up article (which will undoubtedly be included in this edition of the Ye Logge).

A Reminder from the Handicap Rating Committee

We again remind all keelboat owners that our racing season is scheduled to begin in April and the scoring program needs a Valid OCBC-Lake Hefner PHRF number to score your boat. The boats not having a valid rating are: 1. You have not requested one for the boat you plan to race. 2. You have made changes to your boat that changes the information on your present certificate. Owners needing a new certificate are encouraged to submit their request for rating now by completing the 1st page of the Rating Certificate and providing it to Tony Fuller, Handicap Rating Committee Chair. The rating committee needs sufficient time to process, review, rate, and provide the rating to the Regatta Committee so it can be entered into the scoring program before our racing season begins. Blank certificates may be obtained by contacting Tony at [email protected]. Copies are also available in the PHRF section of the Club’s bulletin board. We need your help to keep our valid ratings list up-to-date. If you have sold your boat please let Tony know. Also, if you’re aware of a boat being sold, please let Tony know so he can follow-up if the owner hasn’t advised our committee. Some clarifications and additions to our PHRF Bylaws were approved by the Board of Governors at their March 1, 2012 meet-ing. These are: 1. Article I, Introduction, Item 3, reworded to clarify an annual review of assigned numbers is conducted prior to the beginning of each racing season and also during the season as needed. 2. Across the country, larger multihulls are being given PHRF numbers and US Sailing now publishes a Multihulls PHRF list. The only local multihull on the list is the F-28R Trimaran. The owner has requested and been given a temporary PHRF number of 21 to allow it to compete with self-righting monohulls on Lake Hefner on a trial basis. Based on race results, the rating com-mittee will either assign a valid rating or cancel the temporary rating. 3. Article VIII, Appeals, reworded to reflect appellants will now submit their request for appeal on an OCBC-Lake Hefner Handicap Rating Appeal Form, the Chair will coordinate with the appellant if further information is needed and schedule the hearing when sufficient data is available. Coordination is occurring with the webmaster to include pertinent Handicapping information on the new, soon to be released, Club website; and, the updated Bylaws will also be in the 2012 Roster.

2012 Lighthouse Charity Regatta Beneficiaries

The LCI Beneficiary Selection Committee has chosen Child Abuse Response and Evaluation Center (C.A.R.E), and Salvation Army Boys & Girls Club of Oklahoma City as this year’s beneficiaries. The C.A.R.E. Center Inc. is a non-profit organization and Nationally Accredited Child Advocacy Cen-ter. Serving Oklahoma County, the Center provides investigative forensic interviews and medical exami-nations in a child friendly setting for professionals who investigate child crimes. Working together as an independent member of an interdisciplinary team with

medical professionals, law enforcement agencies and child protection services, the staff provides the most efficient and comprehensive services to children and their families. At the CARE Center, children and their

families find a team of compassionate, sensitive professionals who come together to meet the needs of children who have been abused. It is a team of real people who give their lives to serve those needing protection and help. A special understanding exists between these people—a bond that strengthens all those involved and increases the help they offer. Made up of law enforcement investigators, child protective service workers, assistant district attorneys, medical and family advocacy personnel, and volun-teers, this team works together on the investigation, treatment, management and prosecution of child abuse cases, ensuring the best possible outcome, while creating a caring, supportive, and safe environment for children and their families.

The Salvation Army Boys & Girls Club serves families and children ages 6-18 on the southeast side of Oklahoma City. Our goal is for all of our members to be academically successful, lead healthy lives, and develop great character and citizenship by growing in faith. Over 90% of the families in our community receive free or reduced lunches at school. We offer for free, or at very little cost, after-school and full-day programs, homework help, a year round sports program, classes in drama, dance, mu-sic, visual arts, digital arts, and photography, and a host of fun physical activities. The Club provides snacks and dinner at no cost to every child. And every member is eligible for Salvation Army Corps programs, which includes scouting, brass band, guitar, and voice lessons. The Club is a safe haven on the southeast side of the city. We provide transportation to the Club for parents who are working.

Members do not have to walk through the neighborhood, and, most importantly, do not sit at home alone waiting for their parent

to get off work. Members at the Club are protected from drug abuse and gang violence. Instead of roaming the streets after

school, members laugh, sing, put on plays, learn new games, play on the playground, and shoot basketballs. They come to a

place where everyone knows their name and cares about how their day at school went. The Salvation Army Boys & Girls Club

is irreplaceable in this community.

Ballroom Dance Class This seasons ballroom dance class includes 16 couples who enjoyed a Valentine's Day dance at the club. The evening included dancing along with refreshments ranging from heart shaped pizzas to some of the finest desserts to have ever crossed a taste bud. Although this was a little more elaborate due to the day the standard fair for Tuesday evenings is danc-ing, good food and drink and time spent with friends. Ethelyn Barnett, Dance Goddess

Santana 20 Fleet The local Santana 20’s have put together a travelling series

that is going to include four local regattas. We are looking

forward to a great season and should have some new owners

showing up to regattas. The “Sailing Sisters” , an all woman

group out of Perry Lake sailing club recently bought a

Santana 20 as did Paul Harrow out of Kansas City. Both plan

to travel to the series regattas so it should be a lot of fun!

Not Enough Water to Sail? Dust off your Bike and Ride!

Join a Group of high and mostly dry sailors riding around the lake. We try to start between 0800 to 0830 On Saturdays and ride the 10 miles around the lake at an easy pace. Some of us stop for a great breakfast at the golf course. If we get enough sailors riding bikes to the golf course they may give us the private room just to keep us away from the non-sweating golfers. And just like “Alice’s Restaurant”, if we get enough sailors riding around the lake and stopping at the golf course; it could be come a movement; we could win the golfers to our side, demanding that the City take a release from Canton just to get the stinking-bike-riding-sailors out of their clubhouse
