• On return from Nigeria went to Gravesend grammar school and had no other thoughts other than going to sea.

• 1972 Joined BP completed apprenticeship 2nd Mates ticket

• 1977 Joined RFA, 3rd mate, 2nd mate, Sen. 2nd mate, Mates ticket.

• 1981 to 1982 short-lived campaign as a 'Marine Consultant' in KSA working for father's firm.

• 1982-1986 a spell on the NW European coast with Crescent Shipping
