EPSOM, originally Ebbiaham, derived ite name from St . · Ebba,-. a NorL bombrian princess,. and is a market, Union. and.• railway town, paved and lighted with gas, in the Union of Its name, and eastern division or the Hundred of Copthorneand Effingham, West Surrey, 15 miles south of London by road, and 18! by railway, 16 from Guildford, and 1 from Ewell, delightfully situated on the western verge . or Banstead downs, on t.he main road from London to Dorking, Horsham, Guildford, and Worthing, and on ·the branch railway from Croydon. The government of the town is •ested in the r esident magistrates, viz., the <Baron De Teissier,Jolm Trotter, Esq., Henry Gosse, Esq., Edward Richard Northey, Esq., \V. F. G. Farmer, Esq., . Robert Carter, Esq:, and James Gadesden, Esq., and four constables, appointed annually by the leet jury. .All ' the public and county meetings are held here for this division of the and Petty sessions for tbe division of Epsom, comprising 14 parisbe3, every Friday, and on the first and third Monday in each month, at the Albion hotel. The corn market is held on Wednesday, and. a {11ir on the 25th July. The number of acres js 4 1 389, and the population 4,129 (whereof 3,390 are in the to!'n). The great celebrity of Epsom is derived 'from its horse races, taking place in May 1 the chief point of attraction being on the Wedneday (the Derby day), when a sweepstakes of upwards of £5,000 is run for, 25 or more horses star ting; the races are held on the do\vns south-east of the town, where the ground is exceedingly favourable for gratifying the spect11toN; :the grand stand, which was erected in 1829-30, at an expense of .£20,000, raised by J ,000 shares, rorms a prominent object. on the east from the road between :Ewell and Epsom. The chief support of the town arises from the immense assemblage of persons at the races, and the thorough fa re situa lion of the town. The centre of the town, or High stnet, is on the main road; there are a great many agreeable private residences In tbi.-i parish. The church is dedicated to St. Mar tin, and con- tains a monument, by Flaxman, to the Rev. John Park- hurst, compiler of the Hebrew Lexicon; also a very handsome one by Cbantrey; the church is situated almost at tbe eastern extremity of the parish; it is "" handsome Gothic structure, which was entirely rebuilt, with the ex- -ception of the tower at the north-west corner, at the expense of nearly £7 ,000, in the year 1824; the interior of the church presents a light and elegant appearance, the eastern windows being of rich stained glass. The benefice a vicaraRe, value £346 per annum, in the patronage of the Rev. W. Speer; the Rev. Benjamin Bradney Bockett, M.A., is the incumbent, and the Rev. Richard Stamford ·Philpott, B.A., is curate. There is a new church erected on the common at the west end of the town, which is sm'.all, it . a built of bnck, .1n the Elizabethan style; there are for 200 persons, all free. There are also three Dissenting chapels, one of the Wesleyan, one Independent, and . one Calvinistic. Here are a National' British and Foreign, ani:i two Infant schools (4 schools in all), also almshouses for 12 poor widows, built by John Livingston, a parishioner, in 1703. The almshouses" are condemned as unfit for residence, and the almsowuer_ s longer inhabit them. It is hoped that new almshouses may soon.be erected. The bank has been removed to a house built specially for the pur- pose, opposite the County Court . The Board of Guardians meet at the workhouse every Wednesday. , The : Union Workhouse is a building in the Elizabethan style of arch!;. tecture, and presents an appearance superior .. to ' most buildings of this class; it will contain 3.50 inmates/" 1848 a building was erected by George White, 'Bsq:, adjoining his residence, Ashley House, for the County Court; the jurisdiction of this court extends over the parishes in the Epsom Union; the sittings are hel.d every fourth Saturduy. Henry VIII: bad a palace near Epsom, called Nonsuch, which' was, in 1670, pulled down by the Duchess of Cleve- land. There was another palace, called DURD.f.N!J, now the seat of Ar1hur Heathcote, Esq. The medicinal springs, 1 mile west, were, in the reign of Queen Eliza - beth, frequented by the country people for ulcers, but purgative powers were not discovered till afterwards;. the waters contain sulphate of magnesia, with a little l)ydro- chlorate of lime and magnesia. In the time of Charles I. these salts were so celebrated as to sell at 5s. per ounce; they are now manufactured from the residue of the water, calle<l bittern; after the- ext raction or the common salt. In 1690 the concourse of families and foreigners was very great, and the town was much enlarged. In 1720 the wells.were in their greatest splendour, but in 1804 the mansion at the old wells was pulled down. 'l'here. are waterworks erected by the Board of Health on the downs, for the supply of water to the town. There is also a very handsome building in progress, intended for a medical benevolent college.
