Dear Educators,

It is our pleasure to introduce our 2015-2016 Educator Guide containing exciting learning adventures in history that are available to you and your students this year. With this guide, you will find programs, most of which are free, to suit your curriculum.

Programs are offered not only for the classroom, but also field trips to the Richard and Pat Johnson Palm Beach County History Museum and its historic courtroom, professional development, and Palm Beach County History Online website containing lesson plans that can be used right in your classroom.

We believe that history brought to life for children in a relevant, engaging manner can open doors of social and inter-generational understanding, provide powerful intellectual inspiration, and help kids feel a sense of place and pride about their heritage.

The Historical Society exists to further an understanding and appreciation of Palm Beach County history and heritage by collecting, preserving, interpreting, and exhibiting cultural resources for the education and enrichment of present and future generations. Let us find a way to share it with you.

Traveling Educational TrunksThe Historical Society of Palm Beach County’s Traveling Educational Trunk Program offers an exciting series of educational resources for the classroom. Trunks are based on a specific theme and include information and activities to help students better understand the history of both Palm Beach County and Florida. Instructional material for the teacher is provided. The trunks are designed for 4th and 5th grades but can be adapted for other grade levels. Trunks are available for teachers to use for a three-week loan period. Loans are on a first come, first served basis and must be reserved in advance. There is no charge or deposit for the use of the trunk. The Traveling Educational Trunk Program meets Florida Sunshine State Standards and Common Core Standards.

The Ancient People Trunk offers an exciting educational unit about south Florida’s early inhabitants: the Calusa, Tequesta, Jeaga, and the Belle Glade Culture. Students will explore how these people lived prior to and just after the arrival of Europeans in Florida. The trunk includes a teacher’s guide, photographs, prints by Florida artist Theodore Morris, reproduction artifacts, a map, books, a video, and a student handout. Suggestions for activities are included, such as making rope from palm fiber like the first Floridians did. Students will be able to handle the reproduction artifacts and discuss with their teacher how these tools were made and used by Native Americans. This trunk is designed for 4th grade but may be adapted by teachers for different grade levels.

This traveling trunk is a great way for students to learn about the Seminoles and Miccosukees of Florida through the items they have created. A teacher’s guide is provided that contains lesson plans, background information, and activities. A student handout is also provided for use in class or at home. The objects, photographs, and resources will provide students with a better understanding of Florida’s Seminoles and Miccosukees. This trunk is designed for 4th grade but may be adapted by teachers for different grade levels.

The Pioneer Trunk offers an exciting educational unit about Palm Beach County’s pioneer era (1860-1893). Students will explore how the settlers lived in the late 19th century in the sub-tropical area that is now Palm Beach County. The trunk includes a teacher’s guide, photographs, a large map of the Lake Worth area where the settlers lived, reproduction 19th century artifacts, books, replica fruits and vegetables, deerskin that was traded with the Seminoles, pioneer girl’s clothing, part of a barefoot mailman outfit, and a student handout. This trunk is designed for 4th grade but may be adapted by teachers for different grade levels.

The Holocaust Studies Trunk for 5th grade is designed as a supplement for teachers to use when teaching the Holocaust. It is aligned to the Next Generation Sunshine State Standards and Common Core Standards. One of the most distinctive buildings in downtown West Palm Beach is the historic Neo-classical Revival style 1916 Palm Beach County Court House. This courthouse is actually the second one; the first was in an old schoolhouse located just two blocks south on Dixie Highway.

The 1916 County Court House was destined to be destroyed when the new courthouse across the street opened in 1995. Due to an increase in enthusiasm for preserving Palm Beach County’s history, the Board of County Commissioners voted to restore the courthouse in April 2002. The restoration process began in January 2004 with the demolition of a wraparound structure that had been added in 1970. The building was designated a historic site by Palm Beach County on September 27, 2005, and the project was completed in November 2007.

Now take the Architectural Tour and learn about the architecture elements that make up this Neo-classical Revival style building, the history of the founding of our county, why this courthouse, and its additions were built, and why its name, courthouse is spelled with two words. As you tour the courthouse inside and out, you will learn about the restoration process to restore this building to a beautiful recognizable icon of Palm Beach County history.

Visitors will walk around the inside and outside of the building. The tour will begin in the front hallway of the Johnson History Museum and then move outside for a walk-and-talk around the building. The tour will then re-enter through the first-floor door and tour each floor.

Visit the Museum Tours section under Education at www.historicalsocietypbc.org to download the teacher’sguide and build your own courthouse. You can also scan the QR code to the right.

The Palm Beach County Bar Association’s government and law exhibit, “and Justice for All,” in our Historic Courtroom provides an engaging civics lesson for all to enjoy. It is comprehensive, with different elements of government: the election process; law and court systems at the federal, state, and local levels; historic documents, including the US Constitution; local people that have shaped government/law in Palm Beach County; and other relevant information. A short introductory video about civics is available to view before touring the exhibits.

For this tour, lawyers and judges have been trained to lead classes through the civics experience. When available, they will spend an hour discussing with your students the finer points of government and law. To book the Civics tour, please follow the same procedures as for booking a Museum tour (see page 5). Visit our website: www.historicalsocietypbc.org to download the teacher’s guide for the “and Justice for All” exhibit.

The Historical Society of Palm Beach County presents the special exhibition By Land and Sea: Florida in the Civil War, at the Richard and Pat Johnson Palm Beach County History Museum in the 1916 Palm Beach County Court House from September 8, 2015 - July 2, 2016.

Visitors to the exhibition will be immersed in the history of Florida from 1861 to 1877, encompassing the period during the Civil War and immediately following known as Reconstruction. The exhibit tells the stories of Floridians and how they joined the fight, including Confederates, Unionists, and former slaves who escaped their bondage with the help of the Union. It will focus particularly on how Florida contributed to the Confederacy, and the high costs of war and freedom.

The exhibition will emphasize three Florida-specific themes:

Naval Contributions. By examining everyday life aboard a US naval vessel searching for Confederate blockade runners, the exhibit endeavors to expose the amount of activity in Florida’s coastal waters. From escaping slaves hired by the US Navy to serve aboard ships, to the ship’s doctor who recorded each encounter and the injuries and illnesses associated with the conflict, visitors will reach an understanding of the vicissitudes of the war’s participants.

Agricultural Contributions. Florida supplied the Confederacy with vital supplies, including salt, beef cattle, and other goods smuggled in past the Union blockaders. After the war, the cattle industry and agriculture expanded to become the backbone of the state’s economy.

Daily Life at War. Music and games helped relieve the tedium of shipboard and camp life. Examining the rudimentary medical equipment and the weapons of war will provide a view into the obstacles participants had to overcome in order to survive.

Chasing Dreams: Baseball and Becoming American (December 2015 – March 2016)

Chasing Dreams celebrates baseball and the many fans, players, and characters who helped shape our American story. Every triumph and defeat, every hero on and off the field, has become another chapter in the history we all share. And for immigrants and minority groups especially, it has played a crucial role in understanding, and sometimes challenging, what it means to be American (chasingdreams.nmajh.org.).

The Place GalleryWith its balmy weather and natural bounty, Palm Beach County is a wonderful place to live, work, and play. The county is mostly flat. It has rich soil and a mild climate suitable for growing crops year-round. Salt and fresh waterways provide ample opportunities for recreation. While in many ways a paradise, the county also presents physical challenges of various types and sizes—from mosquitoes to hurricanes.

Rapid Growth and Change: Interactive Map: Visitors activate an interactive map to watch the county grow. As the years on the counter pass by, the map fills in with towns, roads, key sites, and population and demographic figures.

Climate and Physical Features: Central Diorama, Explore Palm Beach County: Here, within a matter of steps, you can walk the breadth and depth of Palm Beach County’s six major physical zones.

Getting Around and Staying in Touch: Once settlers arrived, they were virtually cut off from the rest of the world. With ingenuity and grit, the county’s earliest residents gradually found ways to meet transportation challenges and connect with the rest of the world.

Communication: There were no post offices here when the first settlers arrived. It took up to eight weeks for a letter to get from Jupiter to Miami. The first post office, Lake Worth, opened on the island of what is now Palm Beach in 1880. Gradually, other post offices were established across the county, along with power stations and telephone lines.

Building Homes and Communities: Within the first 50 years of Palm Beach County’s settlement, residents built shacks fashioned from scavenged lumber—as well as some of the grandest homes the nation had ever seen. Since that time, a great diversity of people has moved into the county, often in response to regional and national events. This continual influx of newcomers led to the development of distinctive and vibrant communities.

Enjoying What’s Here: In the late 1800s, hotels began springing up to accommodate visitors—from basic pioneer hotels to grand resorts. To keep visitors entertained, activities varied from tea dances to gambling. By the 1920s, Palm Beach had become one of the world’s premier resorts.

Growing Things in the Glades: In the early 1900s, as wetlands were drained and canals and railroads extended west, the county’s agricultural center shifted to the Glades. Farmers soon learned that this area’s rich soil could support a variety of crops and large, productive farms.
