MechanicalengineerSteveCiattihasdevelopedacombustion

systemthatoperateswithhighefficiencyandpracticallevelsof

powerdensitywhiledrasticallyreducingtailpipeemissions.Ifthe

calculationspersecond.By2012,ArgonnewillbehometoanIBMBlueGene/Qsupercomputer

capableofrunningprogramsat10quadrillioncalculationspersecond.Itwillbeabletodoinone

secondwhatitwouldtakeeveryman,womanandchildintheworldtodoiftheyperformeda

calculationeverysecondformorethantwoweeks.

Materials and Molecular Design and DiscoveryArgonneismakingrevolutionaryadvancementsinthescienceofmaterialsdiscoveryandsynthesis

—predicting,understandingandcontrollingwhereandhowtoplaceindividualatomsandmolecules

toachievedesiredmaterialproperties.Theultimategoal,whichliesmanyyearsinthefuture,isto

engineeringbreakthroughsforhumanity.Nolongermere

toolsinthesearchfortechnicalknowledge,supercomputers

havebecomeincreasinglyessentialtoalmosteveryaspect

Argonne Tandem Linear Accelerator SystemTheArgonneTandemLinearAcceleratorSystem(ATLAS)

isthepremierDOENationalUserFacilityforlow-energy

nuclearresearch—theenergydomainbestsuitedtostudy

thepropertiesofatomicnuclei,thecoreofmatterandthe

fuelofstars.Scientistsfromallovertheworldusethefacility

andtheassociatedexperimentalequipmenttounderstand

thenuclearforcethatbindsprotonsandneutronsintonuclei,

todeterminetheratesofthenuclearreactionsthatmake

thestarsshineandtomeasurewithexquisiteprecisionthe

InresearchconductedattheCenter forNanoscaleMaterialsandthe

ElectronMicroscopyCenter,materialsscientistMihaelaTanasediscovereda

newmethodtocontrolthewayatomsinamagneticdiskorientthemselvestoform“nanoscale

vortices.”Thiscouldchangethewaywestoredataelectronically,eventuallyenablingthewriting

andreadingofdigitalinformationwithgreatersensitivity,reliabilityandefficiency.

Atmospheric Radiation Measurement Climate Research FacilityLedbyArgonne,nineU.S.DepartmentofEnergynationallaboratoriescomprisetheAtmosphericRadiationMeasurement

(ARM)ClimateResearchFacility,whichprovidestheworld’smostcomprehensiveobservationalanddatagathering

capabilitiesforclimatechangeresearch.ARMservesnearly5,000registeredusersfrom15federalandstateagencies,

375universitiesand67countries.Datacollectedgivesscientistsawaytoidentifyimportantatmosphericprocessesand
