TRANSCRIPT
The Scroll of the prophet Isaiah was
handed to Him. Unrolling it, He found the place
where it is written: “The Spirit of the LORD is on
me, because He has anointed me to preach good
news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim
freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight for
the blind, to release the oppressed, to proclaim the
year of the LORD’s favor.” Luke 4:17-19/Isaiah 61:1-2

Greetings in the NAME of CHRIST!
March Madness is here! Millions of people will be hunkered down around the TV for hours during
the month to watch the NCAA Tournament. For many it is a ritual, a tradition, that marks the end of the
college basketball season and the beginning of Spring. The drama, the suspense, the agony of defeat
and thrill of victory will mesmerize millions all through March and into the first week of April.
There is no telling how many tons of junk food, millions of gallons of soft drink and other
associated “beverages” will be consumed during one of the most sacred rituals/traditions in American
sports. March Madness certainly has the potential to add inches to one’s waistline, spike those
cholesterol levels, and increase those systolic/diastolic blood pressure readings! If you are participating
in the “Madness,” here is some advice. Make sure your annual physical Is scheduled after all the
“Madness.”
Well, there is another ritual/tradition that comes along in March. I am afraid most Americans will
not be observing this ritual/tradition. That ritual/tradition is called Lent.
What is Lent? I invite you to read the accompanying article on page six for a brief overview about

What a Season!
We discovered what is was to be on “The Jesus
Team.” From workers, to coaches, to folks praying
for the season—it was remarkable.
Teaching basketball players and cheerleaders to
be all they can be through Jesus Christ who
strengthens them, UPWARD sports is dedicated
(and that is a big, big word—dedicated) to
developing young athletes to “Rise UP” to their full
potential. But it doesn’t stop there. We want to
help transform them (as Christ is doing for us) into
total athletes: mentally, athletically, spiritually,
and socially.
At each practice the coaches share a life lesson
with our players. This centers on Christ-like virtues.
This season we focused on service, contentment
and hope. Each virtue had a corresponding Bible
verse.
At the end of every basketball game our athletes
were recognized by their coach for their actions
and attitudes on the court through the
presentation of game day stars. The stars
represent the following attributes: Effort, Defense,
Offense, Sportsmanship and Christ-likeness. As you
can see, a lot is being taught besides basketball.
Our volunteers this season were amazing. The
dedication of these folks spoke volumes to the
children participating and to the families present. It
was the presence of the Kingdom’s work, in all its
glory. Many “thanks” to all who participated in this
event.

Lent. Many of the liturgical Churches, such as the Catholic, Presbyterian, Lutheran, Episcopalian and
Methodist Churches have for centuries observed the Lenten Season. On the whole, Baptist Churches
observe Lent to a lesser degree and in some cases not at all.
However, increasingly, we see Baptist Churches are recognizing the power of the Lenten Season.
Kenny Lamb, the Worship Consultant for the N. C. Baptist State Convention puts it this way, “unless
we truly experience Lent, Easter is not nearly as great a celebration.” I commend his article, “Why
Baptists Should Celebrate Lent.” You can check the article out at renewingworshipnc.org. Scroll down
and click the Hillsong You-Tube video, “Lead Me to the Cross,” and you will truly see “Why Baptists
Should Celebrate Lent.” Be forewarned the video is graphic and will make you weep!
So, during the Lenten Season, let me simply ask you to do three things. First, take time to reflect
and meditate on your spiritual health. Ask some HARD questions and ANSWER them honestly. GOD
already knows the TRUTH. WE can’t hide. Ask how is my relationship with Christ? Am I hungering and
thirsting after a deeper relationship with Him? If not, why not?
Second, take some time to examine your priorities. As a pastor I often hear folk say, “God, family,
Church, and work are my priorities.” Ok. That’s fine. But the question I will always ask is, “How does
your life reflect those priorities? How do you allocate your time, talents, and treasures? Follow the
trail and you will REALLY see what your priorities are. Again, God knows, so be truthful.
Finally, in light of the answers to these questions, ask yourself this FINAL question, “If I should die
tomorrow what would Jesus say about me?” Will I hear His beautiful words, “Well done good and
faithful servant.”? Sobering thoughts worth meditating upon during this Lenten Season.
Back to March Madness. James, the brother of Jesus, writes in James 5:16, “confess your sins to
one another and pray for one another.” Well, let me be the first to offer a confession this Lent. My
Tennessee VOLS are on the bubble for the NCAA bracket. However, if they make it, well, I just might
have to watch a game or two or three. As for all that junk food—well—I had my physical February 20.
Selah—meditate upon these things! We’ll SEE YOU at The Creek on the next Lord’s Day!

Calendar Calendar
Lent is the span of time in the church calendar that starts with Ash
Wednesday and ends with Easter Sunday. Ash Wednesday commemorates the
beginning of Jesus’ 40 day fasting and temptation in the desert, and Easter
Sunday commemorates Jesus’ resurrection from the grave after his crucifixion.
Lent, then, is generally observed as a time for Christians to reflect, repent,
and pray as a way of preparing their hearts for Easter. It is commonly observed by many Christian
denominations—Catholic, Anglican, Lutheran, and others—although not every Christian church or
denomination does so. Because Lent is not officially instituted in Scripture, observing it isn’t in any way
a “requirement” of Christianity. However, Christians from many different theological persuasions
choose to observe it as a way of focusing their thoughts on Jesus Christ during the Easter season. How
does one observe Lent? It differs from person to person, and church to church, but some of the things
Christians opt to do to observe Lent include:
On the first day of Lent (Ash Wednesday), some Christians mark their foreheads with ash as a
symbol of sorrow and mourning over their sin. (See Job 42 for an example of ash used as a
symbol of repentance.)
Special worship services, or additions to regular worship services, that focus in various ways on
man’s need for repentance. This often takes the form of extra Scripture readings and prayer.
Some Christians choose to give up a habit or behavior during Lent as an exercise in prayerful self-
denial. This might range from something as simple as not drinking soda during Lent to a full-
blown program of fasting.
Some Christians commit to a special devotional activity during Lent—for example, daily Scripture
reading, regular prayer for a specific person or topic throughout Lent, or volunteer work in their
community.
The choice to observe Lent is a personal one—the whole point is to focus your heart and mind on
Jesus during the journey to Easter. There’s no requirement to observe it, nor should you feel guilted
into participating. However, millions of Christians around the world do observe Lent each year; if you’ve
never done so, why not give it a try? Whether you observe Lent in a small or major way, you’ll be
amazed at what happens when you devote a part of each day to reflecting on Jesus Christ and God’s
Word.

by our very own. The breakfast was fabulous and
the car wash a great success with our youth
involved. This year we will offer these items
along with new additions.

Dear Deep Creek Family,
This year our youth will participate in Impact Yadkin for our annual mission project. It is only four
months away and God is moving in some amazing ways. I would like to take a few minutes to maybe
introduce those who are not aware of the opportunity and impact this week of ministry can offer.
What Is Impact Yadkin?
IMPACT YADKIN is a collaboration of volunteers from many different churches whose mission is to
share the message of Jesus Christ and His love with the people of Yadkin County. In addition to reaching
out in the community, IMPACT desires to see students and adults grow in their relationship with Christ
through nightly worship, Bible study, missions, ministry, and outreach.
Supported by several different churches of various denominations, the event takes place during one
week in June. The primary area of mission work is to provide home repairs to those in need.
Eligible home repair projects are identified through an application process with aid of local churches,
Yadkin County Department of Social Services, Aging Planning, and YVEDDI.
The biennial event began is 2011 with approximately 400 volunteers completing 55 home repair
projects.
In 2013, over 600 youth and adult construction volunteers completed 75 home repair projects.
In 2015, forty-three churches provided 776 construction volunteers who completed over 100 home
repair projects during the IMPACT event. Also, local churches completed several projects after the event
ended.
In addition to construction crews, another 800-900 volunteers provide support (prayer, Party in the
Park, meals, water, evangelism, clean-up, video, publicity, administration, etc.) during each IMPACT
event.
Party in the Park events (similar to backyard VBS) have had additional impact on our community. In
2013, park events were held in five different places throughout Yadkin County. These events involved
over 65 volunteer leaders ministering five days to an average of 230 children in grades1-6. IN 2015, Party
in the Park grew to seven locations covering a large portion of the county.
IMPACT YADKIN 2017 dates are June 17-23

old to minister,” therefore all are welcome. Please be in prayer, not only for this mission, but if God is
calling you to actively take part in the unhindered blessing that will flow from participating. This is a
great opportunity to say “yes” to God. When Isaiah was asked “Who shall we send?” he didn’t say
“Only the young or those who have time.” He said, “Send me.”

Who Is This Man Called Jesus?
Jesus performed miracles and signs. He healed
the sick, raised the dead, quelled storms of
nature, fed the multitudes and exercised
absolute authority over the spirit world. Yet—
He wasn’t accepted as Israel’s Messiah.
One might think that with those credentials, He
would automatically be proclaimed Messiah.
We are told, however, that “He came to His
own (people) and His own did not receive
Him,” (John 1:11). After three and a half years of
ministry, only 120 followers were there for the
miraculous beginning of His Church (Acts 1:15).
One of the prophecies about the Messiah
foretold that He would be “despised and rejected
by men” (Isaiah 53:3).
The great works Jesus did that brought about His
popularity in the country were not enough to
overcome the disfavor He incurred from the
religious authorities—or enough to secure loyalty
from the fickle hearts of the common man.
Come and explore this man called Jesus. Join us
upstairs on the third floor in the Searchers
classroom. Bible study begins each Sunday
morning at 10:00 am.
