Top-Flange Valve Box Top vsNo-Flange Valve Box Top

The top-flange valve box top has more than doublethe support area of a no-flange valve box top, thus willnot settle under normal installation and will not losealignment.

It is more difficult to stabilize a no-flange valve boxtop than a top-flange valve box top.

The top-flange valve box top will support a muchgreater traffic load than a no-flange valve box top thusthere is less chance of settlement. If the subsoil is notfully compacted, a no-flange valve box top will settle.

Effects of Frost

Frost can raise the road and a no-flange valve box toptoo. The top-flange valve box top moves with the road.

Our company designed the first top-flange valve boxtop in 1946. Water utilities in the North prefer it.

Typical ApplicationA valve box is installed over an underground

mechanical joint gate valve to permit access to the gatevalve's operating nut. By removing the valve box coverand inserting a long-handled “tee wrench” over the oper-ating nut, the valve can be operated from ground level.

Erie Style Service Boxes

The EJP SERVICE BOX is the result of many years of development. It is made up of three basic components: the cover, the service box, and the rod.

The EJP service box cover features two designs. The standard cover is the plug-type which has a deep slot for the release of surface water and removal of debris. The brass pentagon plug features a coarse “rope” thread to enable quick and easy removal. The two-hole cover is available in cast iron with non-seize Teflon lubricant, or a bronze thread insert.

The EJP service box is available in a number of heights to accommodate any bury depth from 4' 0" to 8' 0". Each box is adjustable 1' 0" within its height range. The service box base is reinforced at the arch and pipe ring area and the arch will accommodate up to 1" curb stops.

The EJP service box rod is the key to a proper box. The rod is offset for centering in the pipe and has a heavy ductile iron yoke end, with a brass cotter pin. The rod’s strength is derived from hot swedging it into the ductile iron yoke. They also come in stainless steel.

Service Box Extensions

Our service box extensions are made from Schedule 40 pipe and are used to increase the height of an existing service box or to accommodate greater depth in a new instal-lation. The service box extension is installed by removing the existing cover and sliding the extension over the top of the box pipe. The extension is adjusted to the desired height and the set screw(s) are tightened to lock it in place before replacing the cover. Extensions are made in lengths from 3" to 24".

cutting of existing 1" service box pipe without rethreading. Cover slides over 1" pipe and locks with pent bolt.

Service Box Foot Piece

The service box foot piece is used to install an Erie or Buffalo Style service box over curb stops larger than 1". The foot piece is centered over the curb stop and the service box is then installed over the neck of the foot piece. The neck of the foot piece fits snugly into the arch of the service box to provide a stable and tight fitting installation. The foot piece fits all standard 1" Erie Style service boxes.

The valve box top has a smoothly cast seat to accept the valve box cover and insure a non-rocking installation. The top is available with a top flange (as shown) which helps eliminate settlement from traffic loads, and prevents frost from raising the box above the road surface. The Gate Box Seat is a high-strength, plastic device designed to eliminate the annoying and costly problem of having to re-dig a valve box base that has shifted off center during the backfilling process. The Gate Box Seat is easily installed by removing the valve’s operating nut and sliding it over the valve stem. When in place it automatically centers the valve box base around the operating nut and prevents the backfill material from interfering with valve operation while still allowing surface water to drain out. Any surface debris that does enter the valve box can quickly and easily be flushed out using air or water.

Pioneer Style Slide Extensions

These valve box top extensions are designed to fit Pioneer style valve boxes. Each extension is supplied with its own cover. Top Extension Rings are used to raise the top extension a fixed dimension of ½" to 1".

Slide Type Top Extensions

Top extensions allow existing valve box covers to be reused. The top extension slides into the existing valve box top and is adjusted to the height required. The actual exten-sion length is 2" less than the overall length to allow for the valve box cover.

This reduced neck valve box riser is specifically designed to be used in valve boxes that have previously had a riser installed. minimum height gained is approxi-mately 2". The top flange securely holds the extension in the pavement. When used with the dirt shield, it becomes a conventional slide riser for standard use.

The Trench Adapter is a fully adjustable valve box and extension stem system available in trench depths ranging from 3 feet to 13 feet. The Trench Adapter eliminates the problems of trying to locate and engage the operating nut on the valve. The Trench Adapter ensures that the valve can be operated at ground level. All you have to do is remove the lid and the operating nut is accessible and ready to use. A grit washer supports the extension stem in the top sec-tion of the valve box. The grit washer is designed to keep dirt and grit from entering the valve box interior. The valve box lid is color coded to indicate drinkable water, sewer or reuse water.

Each Trench Adapter includes a self-centering align-ment ring. This two-piece ring installs in seconds and locks in place under the wrench nut of the valve. The centering ring aligns the valve box dead center over the valve. The sides of the alignment ring are 1½" high, which aids in keeping the valve box in a vertical position while backfilling the trench. This makes correct installation of a valve box easier than ever before. The alignment ring can be purchased separately for use with standard valve boxes.

All components shall be joined with a permenant locking design.
