NoticesThese instructions cover the installation of the D185 Reverse Polarity Signaling Module in afire system supervised by a fire alarm control panel (FACP) or a combination Burglary/Firecontrol panel. Before installing the module, become familiar with the Installation and Operation Guide for thecontrol panel you are using.Install, test and maintain the module according to these instructions, NFPA 72, local codes, and the authority having jurisdiction (AHJ). Failure to follow these instructions can result infailure of a detector to initiate an alarm event. Bosch Security Systems, Inc. is not responsiblefor improperly installed, tested or maintained devices.

!Warning!

Follow these instructions to avoid personal injury and damage to equipment.

NFPA 72 requires that you perform a complete system wide functional test following anymodifications, repair, upgrades or adjustments made to the system’s components, hardware, wiring, programming and software/firmware.

DescriptionThe D185 Reverse Polarity Signaling Module connects a control panel with either a single setor a pair of leased telephone company (telco) lines in NFPA 72 remote station applications. The module’s three input terminals accept alarm, trouble, or supervisory input from thecontrol panel, and the module transmits this information to a monitoring station after a built-in20±5 sec) delay. This module operates with either a 12 VDC or 24 VDC supply. All circuits arepower limited. The module can be used with the Bosch Security Systems, Inc. control panels indicated in thefollowing table. You can also use the module with non-Bosch, UL Listed control panels whereit is referenced as compatible in the control panel's installation instructions.

OperationUnder normal conditions, the module sends a steady 10 mA of current to the alarm telcooutputs and 14 mA of current to the supervisory output which connects to a monitoringstation. In an alarm or supervisory condition, the module reverses the output current polarityand signals a trouble condition by interrupting the output voltage and current.

Table 3.1: Input and output states

Alarm and trouble responses (alarm output telco lines)The module responds to an alarm input from the control panel by reversing the alarm telcooutput polarity. The module responds to a trouble input from the control panel by interruptingthe current to the alarm telco outputsIf the control panel sends an alarm during a trouble signal, the module overrides the troubletelco output and responds with an alarm telco output (reversed polarity).

Supervisory response (supervisory output telco lines)The module responds to a supervisory signal input by reversing the polarity of the supervisorytelco outputs. A second set of telco lines must be connected.

Alarm testThe Alarm Test Switch (Item 18 in Figure 1 on page 2) disables module output during testingthat triggers a trouble output from the module during testing. Generally, this switch is off butduring an Alarm Test, you must move the switch to the ON position. Turning on the Alarm TestSwitch lights the Alarm Test LED (Item 17 in Figure 1).

InstallationNotice!

Install the module within 20 ft (6 m) of the control panel with a minimum of 22 AWG

(0.34 mm2) wire. Ensure all wiring is in conduit.

Danger!

Inform the operator and the local AHJ before installing this module in an existing system.

Disconnect all power to the control panel before installing this module.

1. Removing power from the control panelBefore making or removing any connections to the FACP, remove the standby batterypower.Remove AC power from the system at the dedicated 120 VAC breaker.

2. Mounting the moduleThe module mounts on a snap-track and installs with a supplied screw in the controlpanel enclosure.

3. Connecting the moduleThe module has twelve screw terminal connection points, six on the left side for inputsand six on the right side for outputs (see the D185 reverse polarity signaling modulefigure in Description, page 3 and the Wiring, page 6 section).

!

Caution!

Connect input power only to the PWR Terminals.

4. Restoring power to the control panelRestore AC power to the system at the dedicated 120 VAC breaker.Reconnect the standby battery power.

5. Adjusting the amount of output currentTo adjust the amount of output current required on the telco output, use a screwdriver torotate the alarm signal adjuster.

WiringAn external 12 VDC or 24 VDC power supply listed for fire signaling units or commercial orresidential burglary units can be used. The external power supply must be UL1481 or UL864 Listed, regulated, and power‑limited.Install the control panel and external power supply in the same room no more than 20 ft (6 m)apart. The interconnecting wires between the control panel and external power supply mustbe in conduit. The power source for both the auxiliary power supply and the control panel must be from thesame dedicated AC branch circuit.
