PARISH PICNIC NEWS

St. John Parish will hold its third picnic roundtable meeting next Thursday, June 16th at 6:30pm in the resource room. The eighteenth annual picnic will be held on Sunday, August 7th,2016. To help with the math, the first (on the parish grounds) St. John Picnic was held on Sunday, August 1st, 1999. The picnic, was originally an idea and outgrowth of the Fellowship group, which was called the Social Club at that time. To quote an article which appeared in a June 1999 issue of the St. John Bulletin; “The ranks of St. John Boosters swelled as an enthusiastic group of new and prospective members attended the last meeting of the Social Club. True to the group’s purpose of enhancing our parish and our love and understanding of each other through fellowship. . . the group approved and planned. . . “A Parish picnic for all parishioners” to be held the first Sunday in August. The picnic evolved into an annual “parish-centered” activity with refreshments, Bingo, goodies and games for children and adults - all at ‘no cost’ to attendees. Throughout the years, the picnic has been planned and organized by a core-group of parish volunteers who head up the various aspects of the picnic and form the Picnic Round Table. Each committee is responsible for plans, purchases, securing volunteers and overseeing workers on picnic day. In addition, round table committees submit a financial report and summary of activities listing the pros, cons and suggestions. Roundtable members for the 2016 picnic are: Grounds Bob LeLuga & Vince DeLaurentis Registration Phyllis Drewno Concessions Tom & Anna Davis Bingo Rosalie Prystalski Cooks Jon Douglass Decoration/PR Trudy Miller Beer/Soda Tent Joel Krezman Security Dan Genisio Music Fr. Karol Tybor Kitchen Judy Konieczka Adult Games Dave & Nancy Galbreath Childrens Entertainment Cheryl Hyzy Childrens Games Melissa Doud Facilitator Bill Miller As always, picnic help is needed during both the planning stages and at the picnic. Picnic volunteers and donation of food items will be solicited on the weekends of July 16/17, 23/24, and 30/31. Volunteers will be needed to help with bingo, registration, balloon decor, concessions and indoor and outdoor setup. In addition, lots of help will be needed with lunch service and kids games. Please circle these dates on your calendar. During next Thursdays meeting, roundtable members will report on-going plans and budget. In addition, each group will sub-mit worker and donation needs for the upcoming sign up weekends. All parishioners are welcome to join the picnic round table to assist in planning and preparing for the picnic.

HOPE AND FORGIVENESS There were some interesting conceptions of sin prevalent in the time of the Hebrew scriptures. There was the belief that God punished sin immedi-ately. Those who suffered disease or misfortune were, therefore, sinners getting their due from the Almighty. Today’s first reading hints at another kind of God. When David admits his sin, Nathan declares, “The LORD on his part has forgiven your sin” (2 Samuel 12:13b). Here was not a vengeful God but a merciful God. What good news that must have been to David and those who, like him, could be honest enough to admit their sinfulness! Jesus is the good news of God’s mercy and forgiveness incarnate. Without Jesus, perhaps the good news would have been too good to believe, too difficult to imagine. But there he is in today’s Gos-pel, the God-man, forgiving a sinner and declaring that she is forgiven because of her great love. There is hope, then, for the rest of us sinners, if only we love enough! Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co. —————————————————————————-

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Last week’s “Treasure” no doubt raised an eyebrow or two with the image of the deacons scurrying through the streets of Rome, or perhaps galloping on horseback, with fragments of eucharistic bread from the bishop’s liturgy. These would be dropped into the chalice at outlying celebrations, presided over by presbyters, to express unity with the bishop, and perhaps also to remind the presbyters that they were not free agents. The Council of Laodicea forbade the custom of the fermentum in the year 348. Generally, one of the rules of interpreting law is that people don’t make laws about things that aren’t happening. So, by mid-fourth century, we have an important clue that what had once been a Roman custom had become widespread. Interestingly, when the Church of England (and its related bodies) went through a liturgical renewal in the mid-nineteenth century, they reclaimed this custom from the mists of history. Today, it is the custom in some Anglican dioceses for a fragment of the host from the bishop’s Holy Week liturgy (what we call the Chrism Mass) to be carried to every parish. On “Maundy Thursday” (our Holy Thursday), the frag-ment is dropped into the chalice to signify the parish’s communion with the bishop. This modern revival of the fermentum is different from the “co-mingling” action we are used to, in which a fragment of the consecrated bread is dropped into the chalice just before Communion. —Rev. James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.
