A Day in the Life…

Reagan is a junior at Columbia College Chicago studying fashion business. She lives in the Lakeview East neighborhood of Chicago with two roommates. The three girls have been friends since the beginning of their college careers, all meeting their freshman year at Columbia. Reagan takes public transportation to get to school and her part time job, working at The Gap. In her spare time, she enjoys volunteering, going to festivals and outdoor markets where she buys fresh fruits and vegetables.

Reagan is a strong willed and creative girl. She is thought of highly by all of her friends and family; she is reliable and always ready to lend a helping hand. Reagan participates in the green movement when it is convenient; she tries to recycle and enjoys reusing items in a creative way. Reagan enjoys staying active at her gym, and likes taking walks and running on the lakefront when the weather is nice.

Reagan stays up to date on trends by reading magazines and keeping an eye on street fashion. She doesn’t have a lot of extra money to spend on clothing, but when she does, Reagan enjoys quality over quantity. She likes having the choice of one-of-a-kind pieces and is often complimented on her style. She likes visiting ShopColumbia at least once a week, usually when she has time to kill between classes. Reagan buys birthday and Christmas gifts for her family and friends from the ShopColumbia store because they are unique and student-created.

Background on ShopColumbia

Support Student Artists.

ShopColumbia, Columbia College Chicago’s student art store, features original designs created and inspired by Columbia artists. Spanning all media and disciplines, ShopColumbia is defined by what Columbia students are making right now. The store supports students by providing a professional environment to learn the process of marketing and selling work and a vibrant venue for earning income.

The Department of Exhibition and Performance Spaces, the student centers and galleries of Columbia College Chicago opened ShopColumbia in October 2008 in order to provide students a commercial venue for showcasing and selling their work. Half of the total proceeds from sales goes to the student and half helps to support the student scholarships. In addition, with the skills learned by working with the store, students become empowered to expand into external marketplaces. New work is added daily, so it is exciting and important to check back regularly.

Do you ever wonder what to do with old books? Maybe you inherited some unique vintage textbooks and are tired of them collecting dust on the bookshelf. Welcome to our line of clutches, wallets and coin purses made from books of all sizes and colors found at thrift stores. All items used to complete the project are also from thrift stores such as Goodwill, Value Land and Thrift Center. We purchased old purses and wallets and used the needed pieces on our creations, such as the clasps and the toggles. We also used belts as a handy strap for the clutches, and vintage scarves for lining.

In order to create another collection of the same style of clutches, wallets and coin purses, we would shop at thrift stores for the books and scarves, and an art store for the other items needed. Part of the charm of this collection are the different vintage books, so we would not want them to all look the same, which could be an issue if they were to be mass produced.

Each piece required different amounts of time, an average of about 5.5 hours. Saving time would be possible for the next collection of book clutches because we would know exactly what we are doing. During this first round, we were still guessing and trying different things for each piece.

In order to sell our products on a larger scale, we would be cautious and research each boutique that is interested in order to make sure that the store’s aesthetic matches ours. While the merchandise can certainly be bought at boutiques, we also could take personal orders, in which the customer would give us a hard back book of their own and we would make it into a clutch, wallet, or coin purse. This aspect will cheapen the price of the final product, because the book is being provided, and will directly connect us to our loyal customers.
