Historical Trauma and Boarding SchoolsFrom 1870s - 1930s, many Native children were forced into the schools to be “civilized” Indians and eradicate all traces of Native culture.
Punishment was severe for speaking native languages or practicing traditions and customs. They were forced to speak English and practice Christianity.
The Meriam Report, a major investigation into Indian affairs, was published in 1928 and confirmed the complaints Indian families and students had been making for years

Trickle Down Affect
The genotype is the genetic makeup of an organism. The phenotype is how genetic and environmental influences come together to create an organism’s physical appearance and behavior.
Internalized Oppression• Internalizing the beliefs and values of the oppressor, or dominant group, in order to feel a sense of power.
• Self-worth of the individual and/or group has sunk to a level of self-hatred. This self-hatred can be either internalized or externalized.
• When self-hatred is externalized, we encounter a level of violence within the community that is unparalleled in any other group in the country. (Duran and Duran, 29)

Sometimes violence was used as a protective factor • Harsh punishment of kids because they would be lynched if they acted up
• Parents rather be the ones to issue corporal punishment – sign of “love”
• Aligning behaviors and actions with those with the power was for survival

Domestic Violence:• is a pattern of physical, sexual, psychological and economically assaultive and coercive behaviors;
• is used to gain compliance or control;
• causes physical and psychological harm to the victim and children;
• exists in current or previous intimate partner relationships.
Sexual Violence:• is forced upon someone, eliminating their right to consent, their choice, and denying them their sexual freedom;
• is about dominance (power over another);
• is seeing another as a sexual object – including TV, ads, and movies;
• can exist in current or previous intimate relationships, between acquaintances or strangers.
Facilitators of ViolenceHierarchy - believes he is the authority in the relationship/family
Objectification – the process of reducing a person, or group, to an object (i.e. name calling)
Horizontal Hostility – internalizing negative external perceptions and projecting that violence and oppression to members of one’s own group
Impunity – no consequence for actions
CollusionCollusion is any act that intentionally or unintentionally supports bad, deceitful, or illegal behavior.
Cooperation is always positive, Collaboration is positive, and Collusion is always negative
Collusion makes the batterer more powerful by reinforcing his use of abusive and violent tactics and also prevents him from being held accountable for his violence.
Ways friends and families collude• Accepting his excuses: “I was drunk”; “I only pushed her; “She just pushed my buttons.”
• Saying things like: “Well, if she were only a better wife/mother”; “She gets drunk all the time”; “She verbally abuses him, too.”
• Ignoring his behavior or laughing at his jokes and stories about her that are demeaning, embarrassing, or humiliating to her.
Ways institutions collude•Not arresting when there is probable cause.
•Reducing charges to lesser crimes, like disorderly conduct.
•Not determining who is the predominant aggressor and making a dual arrest.
•Not having policies, procedures, and protocols that hold him accountable or provide her safety (work place, housing, child protection).
Ways society colludes• Uses terms like “Dysfunctional Family” “Crime of Passion”
• Statements like she “allows” or “enables” the violence; “failed to protect” the children
• “He was/is such a nice guy”
• Views domestic violence as “he just needs to deal with his anger” or “he has an anger problem”
