This past Saturday the “Medicine Walk” took place down at Fort St. Joseph. It was an opportunity to learn about traditional indigenous medicine and the medicine wheel of life. It was a very hands on experi- ence to smell and touch various plants that grow locally among us and how they are used medicinally naturally. We were even allowed to pick some of the purple berga- mot and eat it. It was a little strong and overwhelming, but still pretty delicious. The purple bergamot’s name is inspired by the bergamot orange, which its leaves smell like, and if you take a walk around the fort at this time of year the orangey scent of the leaves in the breeze is a welcoming atmosphere. Several groups throughout the morning and early after- noon participated on guided walks to various stations on the grounds of the fort. In addition to the traditional indigenous medicine, the voyageurs, the Metis, medicinal ways were also on display. While medicinal information was the main theme, there was also the opportunity to see some of the toys early settlers entertained themselves with, listen to delightful fiddle music and drumming and singing, and learn a bit about what life was like at the time. Everyone even got to help in a native drum birth- ing ritual. PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENTAugust 18, 2017

It’s Out of This World! A Portable Planetarium Comes to Richards Landing.

Science North, Ontario 150 and The Township of St. Joseph are pleased to present - Under the Same Stars: Minwaadiziwin – a portable planetarium experience.

The First People of Northern Ontario were scien-tists and innovators, carefully tracking and mov-ing with the seasons, and creating inventions that allowed them to survive in thenorthern forests of our province. With this close connection to the natural world, the Indigenous People developed a strong culture, rooted in respect for the environment.

Through this portable planetarium experience, vis-itors will learn about the Indigenous worldview and sit at the fire with two people who are connected to the traditional ways. They will leave the planetarium with an understanding of common constellations visible in the night sky and theAnishinaabe stories that define them.

The planetarium will be set up at the Richards Landing Old Town Hall, 1211 Richards Street. This free presentation is available one day only, Thursday August 24th. Eight show-times are available, thirty minutes each. 12pm, 12:30pm, 1pm, 1:30pm, 2pm, 2:30pm, 3pm, and 3:30pm. Seating is first come, first serve. Please call 705-246-2625 ext. 201 for details.

Solar Eclipse Monday

While we are sure most people are well aware of the eclipse, here are the times for Monday’s event below. The times listed are for the island, but if you are in the surrounding area the times will be the same.

From start to finish the eclipse will be visible for 2hours and 38 minutes. If you happen to be further south then it will be longer. Never look directly at the eclipse without proper protection. If you do not have protection you can make a pinhole viewer (instruc-tions to contstruct one are on the next page). Also, remember not to buy any strange plants and name them Audrey, Seymour!

Plan Ahead Using a Pinhole Projector

Extra fun

Make your Pinhole Projector

Find a Spot

People across North America will be able to see an eclipse on August 21.A solar eclipse happens when the Moon passes between you and the Sun.The Moon blocks your view of the Sun.Some lucky people in the USA will see the Moon totally block the Sun.Most people will see the Moon only parally block the Sun.

Make a fancy pinhole projector. Draw a simple design on your card and use the push pin to punch holes about 1/4 inch apart. What does its shadow look like during the eclipse?

Look for natural pinhole projectors, like in the dappled shade of trees. What happens to the tree shade during the eclipse?

Look for your shadow. At the same me as the eclipse (between 1:01 and 3:38), you need to clearly see the shadow of your head and shoulders.Your shadow can fall on the ground or on a wall. You can be indoors or outdoors.

You should see a circle of light on your screen card. That is actually an image of the Sun!When you use your projector during the solar eclipse, you will see something other than a circle. You will see the shape of the eclipsed Sun.You can watch the Sun's crescent grow smaller and then bigger again.

Materials:• 2 cards or small paper plates• push pinProcedure:Use the pin to poke a hole in a card. That's it! You now have a pinhole projector. The card with the hole is your pinhole card. The other card is your screen.

1. Go to your eclipse viewing spot. Stand facing AWAY from theSun, and find your shadow.2. Hold your pinhole card up so that you can see the card'sshadow above your shoulder's shadow.3. Hold the other card (the screen card) in front of you. Make itsshadow overlap with the shadow of the pinhole card.

St. Joseph IslandMuseum Moment

Well here we are, creeping closer and closer to Labour Day, the unofficial end of summer. It’s been a busy summer at the museum, I haven’t done final tabulations yet but it appears that visitor numbers are up, thanks in part to the number of rainy, cool days this summer I’m sure. What a great way to spend a day rainy or not, touring through our buildings and taking a stroll through time. Why all this end of summer talk? Well I have BREAKING NEWS! I have finally firmed up the prizes for the “member’s only” draw that takes place at Harvestfest. They are as follows…and pretty exciting I might add.

1st prize-$500 cash-generously donated by the Matthews Family

2nd prize-$500 cash-generously donated by Algoma Power

3rd Prize-$300 cash-generously donated by Al-goma Financial Group

4th prize-Silver gemstone ring valued at approx. $300-generously donated by Northern Jewellery and Crafts

There is still plenty of time to renew or become a member. Drop by the museum any day of the week between 10-5 except Tuesday as we are closed. Or you can drop by our table at Har-vestfest, it’s cutting it close but you will still be eligible for our draw.

For as little as $20 for a single or $30 for a fami-ly you could be entered into this “member’s only draw”. Membership has its benefits, besides having the opportunity to win a prize, you will have access to the museum all season long, as well receive our annual member newsletter in the spring. This newsletter outlines all of the current events of the museum and plans for the upcoming season. As well, the money received from our annual membership drive allows us to provide excellent educational exhibits and preserve and maintain the over 7000 artifacts within our 6 historic buildings. Wouldn’t it be nice to know that you have helped to preserve a part of the past? For more details feel free to call the museum at 705-246-2672.

Recipe Corner

Apple Cake

This is a really neat cake – not cakey …. But it’s really nice.

This apple cake, from THE PARIS COOKBOOK is a very homey recipe from a lady who has a market stall in the shadow of the Eiffel Tower. Simple French home cooking; I have served this one many times to guests! It has a surprisingly small ratio of batter to apples. The batter is just there to hold the apples together. Cortland and Gala apples are recom-mended for this recipe …. You can also use less acidic Golden Delicious. Serve with Ice Cream or a big dollop of whipped cream ….

½ cup all purpose flour1/3 cup sugar1 Tbsp baking powder1/8 tsp fine salt½ tsp pure vanilla extract2 large eggs, lightly beaten2 Tbsp vegetable oil (I use Becel)1/3 cup whole milk4 baking apples (about 2 lb. total), cored, peeled and cut into thin wedges

Topping1/3 cup sugar1 large egg, lightly beaten3 Tbsp unsalted butter, melted

EquipmentA 9 inch spring form pan

Preheat the oven to 400 deg. FButter a 9 inch spring form pan and set it aside (I like a parchment circle on the bottom)In a large bowl, combine the flour, sugar, baking powder and salt. Stir to blend. Add the vanilla extract, eggs, oil and milk and stir until well blended. Add the apples and stir to thoroughly coat them with the butter.

Spoon the mixture into the prepared cake pan. Place the pan in the center of the oven and bake until fairly firm and golden, about 25 minutes.Meanwhile, prepare the topping: In a small bowl, combine the sugar, egg and melted butter, and stir to blend. Set it aside.

Remove the cake from the oven and pour the topping mixture over it. Return the cake to the oven and bake until the top is a deep golden brown and the cake feels quite firm when pressed with a finger-tip, about 10 minutes.

Transfer the cake pan to a rack and allow to cool for 10 minutes. Then run a knife around the sides of the pan. Release and remove the spring form side, leaving the cake on the pan base (I find I can slide it off with the parchment on the bottom but whatever works for you... Serve at room temperature, cut into thin wedges.

This little book has an alternative title on the back cover “How to Live at the Intersection of Wonder, Awe, and Curiosity”, that I feel better reflects the content. The book can likely be read in a couple of hours includ-ing a wee bit of reflection. The author uses both words and simple drawings to communicate her message. Although you likely have heard some of the tips before, her writing style and diagrams might be just the nudge and approach one needs to live life fuller.

Hagy arranges her ideas into 10 simple main steps, all of which have a dozen or so secondary suggestions to drive the main idea. Here are the 10 main steps;1. Go Exploring2. Share what you Discover3. Do Something….Anything4. Embrace your Weirdness5. Have a Cause6. Minimize the Swagger7. Give it a Shot8. Hop off the Bandwagon9. Grow a Pair 10. Ignore the Scolds

All the steps and sub steps, which include a dozen words at most, are accompanied by a simple drawing to illustrate her ideas. At first glance it looks like a bunch of scientific diagrams, but it’s not. She seems to use the tension between the ideas to illustrate the gap, or intersection, where the good stuff lies.

Here is an example of what to expect on each page. Below I tried to replicate pages 210 and 211. In every page, narrative is captured in a sketch or two: A picture worth 1000 words.

Bravery is needed to have contrary opinions and to take unexpected paths. If you’re not courageous, you’re going to be hanging around the water-cool-er, talking about the guy who actually is.

Monarch Butterfly

The Monarch’s population has been the highest it’s been in five years; however, the species is still at risk. Illegal logging, herbicides, lack of milkweed plants and climate change have had effects on the Monarch’s populations. The caterpillars you see on milkweed plants today will soon be turning into butterflies that will make the long migration down to hibernate during the winter in Mexico, a 2000-5000 kilometer journey!

Monarchs lay their eggs on the undersides of milk-weed plants, which is the source of food for the caterpillar. The eggs hatch in about four days, then the Monarch spends two weeks as a caterpillar. The caterpillar then forms a chrysalis and hatches into a butterfly after about ten days. The life span of an adult butterfly is 4 – 6 weeks, unless it’s late summer generation that live between 6 – 7 months migrating down to Mexico.

You can help the Monarchs by planting a butterfly garden (from our trip down to the fort we found that they are quite fond of purple bergamot) and also planting milkweed on your property.
