Thank you for picking up a copy of Shanghai Centre Magazine!

Most properties use a tag line in their marketing to entice potential customers to their pre-opening or newly opened property. You have probably read many of them, especially the "Heart of the City" tag line, which I believe is one of the most re-used tag lines of all time. Tag lines come and go and usually once a property is past the initial occupancy stage they fade away and are forgotten forever.

At Shanghai Centre we live and breathe our tag line: "Life at your doorstep". It is a tag line we have used for many years. It is not just a mere semblance of crafty words but rather our daily mantra which guides us in everything we do to ensure your experience at Shanghai Centre is a great one.

You might have noticed that we are re-energizing our Retail Plaza by bringing you more of what you want: new dining choices, expanding existing ones, and creating more patio dining so you can entertain and relax, right at your door- step. Inside this issue of our magazine you can read more about some of the great new dining outlets that are planned to open soon. We also have a lot more exciting venues coming throughout the year.

In addition to more dining choices, our retail area will be expanding on Xikang Road to add more shopping options. Within the next couple of months there will also be a dramatic transformation of the hotel entry which will surely become the central point of our Plaza. All this represents our commitment to continually provide our tenants and guests with outstanding products and services. Enjoy this issue of our magazine and remember, at Shanghai Centre, life is always right at your doorstep!

the fourth floor of Shanghai Centre, just off the Atrium, is the office containing the nerve center of the NFL in China. Richard Young, who hails from Sedona, Arizona, is the Managing Director. Holding a football, he strides into the conference room where we meet him. His eyes scan the room. For a moment it looks like he’ll throw a Terry Bradshaw “long bomb” but tosses the ball from hand to hand instead. He smiles and you get the feeling right off that he really enjoys what he does for a living. And who wouldn’t? Founded in 1920, the NFL is by far the most popular sports league in the United States. The Super Bowl is the largest single day sporting event in the world and individual Super Bowls hold all of the top ten places for most-watched television programs in American history. In the United States, the National Football League has television contracts with four of the major US networks, CBS, ESPN, Fox, and NBC. It is an extremely lucrative business and Richard is tasked to bring all the energy and excitement of this game to the Middle Kingdom. It’s a big job with 60-70 hour work weeks. American football is a relative newcomer in China. Basketball, another American super sport, has already made inroads and has attracted a huge following. Unfazed, Richard believes that football will also find its popularity and that it’s only a matter of time. Stats seem to back him up. According to his figures, the fan base growth in China is 55% to 14 million in 2013. Social Media following has also improved with a 50% increase of Sina Weibo followers to 326k and a 39% increase of SNS exposure to 208,000,000 in the 2013 season. All in all, the fan base has grown over 400% in the past four years. Of course there are those who have doubts if American football will take off in China. Richard first came to China in 1990 and has witnessed first hand the major changes that have propelled China’s economy into the second largest in the world. He is probably one of the best people to know if American football will take off in this country. He has heard many times people say this or that won’t work in China. He often tells the story of when he was a graduate student at Beijing Normal University in the early 1990’s, “Nobody then was drinking coffee in China,” he says with a laugh.“Everyone was convinced the Chinese would never drink coffee because they have been a tea drinking nation for thousands of years. Flash forward two decades and it is clear that coffee consumption in China has grown leaps and bounds.” Richard continues, “The bottom line is that when it comes to good products cultural differences are not as dividing as people believe.” Richard is quick to point out that it’s not going to be a walk in the park getting American football going in China. There are headwinds he admits and adds, “Like the fact, for example, we’re not an Olympic sport, and in China that is important. But I’ve been in the sports business a long time and football is a great product. People in China are starting to really warm up to it.” Richard has a small town U.S.A. charm. He was actually born in Evanston, Illinois but at five years old his family moved to Sedona, Arizona. His parents are physicians and his upbringing was all about sports and the great outdoors. He has vivid memories of hiking, swimming, camping and fishing. “It was such a great place to grow up,” he says. “Sedona then was a really small town, so small in fact that I remember when we got our first stop light, way back when Route 89A was just a gravel road.” He confesses he was not the most attentive

student but that all changed when he headed to Boston University in 1988 and earned a degree in International Relations and Asian Studies. He was one of the first to graduate from B.U. with a major in Asian Studies. Richard has always had a fascination with China. He had seen by chance, when he was a young boy, Chinese newspaper clippings that were the stuffing for a book he had found and just “cut open to see inside”. The Chinese characters were “like a secret code” and intrigued him. It was no surprise that he decided to focus on China for his studies. In 1990 he headed to Beijing Normal University and then in 1992 went to Taiwan to enter a graduate program in Modern Chinese Political History. It was in Taiwan that he started to get involved with promoting sports like tennis, golf and even volleyball. “A friend asked me to help out on a women’s table tennis event,” he says and then adds. “They told me I did a great job and would I like to continue helping them out. Michael Chang had just recently won the French Open, and China was starting to open up so it was a really exciting time.” In 1997 ESPN / Star Sports made Richard an offer to oversee their Event Management Group running and creating events such as the first Standard Chartered sponsored marathon in Hong Kong, the Asian Premier League Trophy and the Asian X-Games. After two years in Hong Kong, Richard moved to Singapore where he managed over 100 events in 11 different countries, while earning an MBA at the University of Chicago. In 2010 the NFL asked him to join their League after they were a client in the consultancy he set up in 2005. Richard moved his office to Shanghai along with his family (his wife, Lucy, is Chinese American and they have a daughter, Haley, and a son, Nolan, both of whom are active in sports). From the get-go Richard wanted to take the long-term approach to how he would promote American football in China. “I like Deng Xiaoping’s strategy of crossing the river by feeling the stones,” he says. Richard is convinced that football is one of the fastest growing sports in China today and that the sport will continue to gather momentum as more Chinese learn and begin to appreciate the unique dynamics of the game. “I want to make American football a top ten sport in the tier one cities by 2020,” he says. It is clear that Richard is excited about the future of football in China and is hyper focused on how to go about achieving his goal. “By putting on quality events like the NFL Home Field, NFL University, and the Flag Football League, as well as games and highlights on 24 media platforms across China,” he says, “we will take a hands-on approach to building the game in China. We can’t just rely on T.V. as our main driver. We are very much into mobile consumption and social media. The NFL China mobile app for devices and on WeChat, for example, will be available soon.” Richard’s efforts appear to be paying off as recent NFL events had almost 100,000 fans attending in Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou. Additionally leagues from youth to adult, tackle to flag are sprouting up across the country. American football, it seems, is gaining ground in China one touchdown at a time.

The start of the Lunar year was celebrated in grand style with lion dances, traditional Chinese handicrafts, a Peking Opera performance and of course, a feast of Chinese delicacies presented by the team of The Portman Ritz-Carlton, Shanghai. May the year of the horse bring you all the best of luck!

To stay in shape, residents & tenants were offereda complimentary nooner yoga class in the ShanghaiCentre Atrium courtesy of lululemon athletica.

recap tid bits:During the “Food is GREAT” Fair we got to witness acooking show-down between two celebrity chefs andgot to sample the best of British cuisine.

Maison Camus opened in style with a resident & tenant appreciation party and taught us more about French wine.

At the monthly coffee morning it was all about getting your future right with a class on I-Jing and learn how to appreciate Chinese tea.

You were thinking the next Olympics are still a couple of years away? Then you missed out on the WOW Wawa Crawl! More than 50 babies between the ages of 8-12 months raced to the finish line for the “gold” and other prizes. And the fun didn’t stop there: after the race, participants and their siblings could continue discovering the Little Farm Garden, Refuel Hut, Sensory Corner, Magic Castle and other fun zones of the WOW Wawa Land.

The winter season is a time of giving so Shanghai Centre joined in this jolly spirit. We participated in the Mifan Mama Boxes of Love program and provided Chinese New Year gifts for orphans in rural areas.

River of Hearts did another charity clothes drive andcollected many boxes whom were shipped off to remote areas in Yunnan province.

The Theatre department also hosted a two day exhibition of artwork of autistic children, followed by a silent auction.

Do you like what you do?I enjoy solving problems for our customers. When I find a solution that helps a client I feel very good.

Where did you go to university?I went to Shanghai University and graduated in Automation.

Pottery Fun!The first outing of the year for both Caterpillar and Butterfly classes was a trip to the pottery workshop. The youngest kids made “their version” of a hedge hawk; the older group got creative with different animals like a turtle, rabbit and even a butterfly tray. Kids and parents had a great time and are eagerly awaiting the glazed results of their artwork!
