Guide to Local. Occupational Information
This publication replaces the 1962 edition ofthe Guide to Local Occupational Informationpcepared by the United States Employment Serviceto provide State employment services and otherusers of occupational information with a readyreference to local occupational guides and areaskill surveys. The booklet contains a listingof local occupational reports developed by Stateagencies under the United States EmploymentService's Job Opportunities information Program.
Preface
Recent manpower legislation has emphasized both the necessity formeaningful information on the availability of workers to meet employerrequirements and the need to relate training programs to employment.
opportunities. This publication is 1,4irectory of selected EmploymentService studies intended to provide current local occupational informa-
tion for use in designing training programs, for counseling in localpublic employment offices and schools, and to offer individual jobseekersand vocational counselors concrete information on job opportunities inspecific occupations or groups of occupations. Under the United StatesEmploynent Service's Job Opportunities Information Program establishedten years ago, affiliated State employment security agencies have con-ducted surveys and prepared periodic reports on job opportunities and
other occupational manpower information. Included in this publication
are two principal types of local occupational information developed and
expanded as apart of this program--occupational guides and area skillsurveys.
Occupational Guides, cross-indexed by occupation and area in this publi-cation, are prepared by State employment services and provide a concisesummary of the job duties and employment prospects for a single occupationor group of occupations in a particular area or State. These Job Guides
also contain information on the characteristics of the occupation, trainingand experience requirements, local training facilities. methods of entry, and promotional opportunities as well as information on wages and working
conditions for the job. Of special interest to those concerned with jobmarket and general occupational information on entry jobs are the Job Guidescovering selected occupational fields or special worker groups. Eighteenof these Job Guides are addressed to young workers or high school graduates.
Area Skill Surveys are designed to provide comprehensive information ofcurrent employment and future labor requirements in individual labor areas. These studies relate community manpower resources to anticipated long-termoccupational requirements, generally two to five years ahead. Almost 140
such surveys are currently available and an additional 44 are in progress
or in the planning stage.
In Part I, the guides are listed by occupational group and by occupation
within the occupational groups.
Part II contains a listing, by State, of occupational guides.
iii
Part III contains a listing,, by State, of occupational guidance publica-tions covering selected industries, occupational. fields, or specialworker groups.
Part IV contains a listing, by State and locality, of area skill surveysalready published and those reported planned or in process.
In Part V the occupational guides are indexed by job title.
Further information regarding local occupational guides, skill surveys, and Job Guides for special worker groups listed in this publication asbe obtained by writing to the appropriate State agencies at the addressesindicated on the inside back cover of this publication.
