Results of Berlin World Congress...Wunderbar!The ICOI celebrated its 32nd World Congress this past October in the German capital of Berlin with over 600 attendees from 40 countries around the world. As reported earlier, this World Congress was co-hosted by ICOI’s German Component Society, the DGOI, and the BDIZ EDI, the German society which excels in the business and regulatory aspects of dentistry. The weather in Berlin over our Congress dates, October 15-17, 2015 was reminiscent of a spring in London, i.e. cloudy and rainy, but the atmosphere in the lecture and exhibit halls was anything but gloomy.

The Congress got off with a bang when Dr. Kostantinos Valavanis presented his fabulous program of international Young Implantologists. This author was concerned that there would be limited interest in the Young Implantologist concept. Happily, I was very wrong. The four-hour program attracted a standing-room-only crowd of some young, but mostly more experienced delegates who filled the hall to learn from these speakers. Spreading the word of our next generation leaders were the following speakers:

Dr. Roberta Gasparro from Italy who opened the program with Ultra-short Implants: A Novel Mini Invasive Treatment Opportunity.

Dr. Teruaki Homma from Japan who spoke on One Abutment One Change, Digital Prosthetic Protocol.

Dr. Elisa Choukroun from France (whose proud father, Joseph, was a Main Podium speaker) lectured on Socket Management for Secondary Implantation-A Biological Approach.

Dr. Filipa Braga from Portugal discussed Digital Dentistry in Complex Cases.

Dr. Paolo Nuzzolo from Italy showed how to achieve Platform Switching: “Con Morse” and Implant Morphology to Optimize Function and Aesthetics.

Dr. Daniel Grubeanu from Germany addressed Predictable Implant Aesthetics in the Esthetic Zone by Intelligent Abutment Selection. The Concept “Atlantis”.

Dr. Giuseppe Pantaleo from Italy focused on Different Indication of Regenerative Biomaterials: Our Clinical Experience.

Greece’s Dr. Nicolaos Mallios questioned the audience on Optimum Graft for Reconstruction of Absorbed Ridges: Autogenous Bone, Allografts, Xenografts or Alloplastic Materials?

Dr. Tom Giblin from Australia focused his lecture on Incorporating Digital Dentistry into the Modern Implant Practice.

Immediately prior to our Berlin World Congress, on October 7-11, the European Section of the International College of Denists (ICD) held its 60th Annual Meeting in conjunction with an ICD International Council Meeting in Dublin, Ireland. At the Induction Ceremony over 40 Candidates were present from Europe including three from Kenya. An Honorary Fellowship was presented to Simon Gambold from the United Kingdom and a Master of the ICD was presented to Kenneth Judy from the United States. During the Induction each new inductee’s curriculum vitae is read aloud prior to acceptance into the ICD. This event in the Examination Hall of Trinity College in Dublin was impressive as usual and was followed by a formal seated dinner for over 300 at the Royal Hospital at Killmainham. Of note, over 50% of the inductees had substantial commitments to practicing or teaching oral implantology/implant dentistry. A very promising future for our special area of practice.
