Wednesday 6 March 2019 Term 1, Week 6
Respect Responsibility Aspire
Principal’s Report
Kindergarten Parent Evening Thank you to the P&C led by Tracey Martin and the Manly Golf Club organised by Cath Williams for the outstanding Kindergarten Parent evening. There was an excellent turnout and the venue was brilliant. We hope this is the beginning of many new friendships for the future.
Multicultural Officers Congratulations to Octavia Williams, Coco Conway and Audrey Costello who have been chosen as the Multicultural Officers for Manly West PS. They will now lead the Harmony Committee with John Engeldew, Charlotte Blenkhorn, Charlie Campbell and Amelia Carter for Harmony Day at Manly West on the 28th March.
Clean up Australia /Environment Committees
Thank you to Mrs Dowdle and all the teachers and students for their support of the Clean Up Australia event at Manly West PS. The Environment Committee and P&C Environment Committee have recently joined together to consider waste reduction at Manly West PS. The students in Year 3 and 4 learn about sustainability through the Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden program and will conduct a waste audit this semester. Semester Accounts
Semester 1 accounts will be emailed next week. This account covers all costs for Terms 1 & 2. Any additional excursions that may arise will be invoiced separately. The Year 6, Term 3 Canberra Excursion fees will be included on this invoice and payment is required by the end Term 2. If you are experiencing financial difficulties please contact the school. Road Safety Please be mindful of safe road practices with students and parents. A number of incidents have been reported
recently that have been very dangerous for students and parents which include crossing at incorrect areas
and toddlers running ahead of parents at busy traffic peak times. More details on Page 2. Dogs on School Grounds There are also concerns regarding dogs on school grounds either being walked through the playground or being tied up at the gates. All dog owners have the responsibility of having their dog under effective control of a competent person above the age of 18. The Companion Animals Act (1998) prohibits dogs on
school grounds. Please be considerate of the safety of our students. Student News Congratulations to Hugh Yiend and Connor Singleton, who have been selected to represent Manly United Football Club in a European Mini tour in May in Europe. What an outstanding opportunity. Enjoy! Congratulations to Charlotte Blenkhorn who is continuing to perform in La Boheme with
Opera Australia this month. Congratulations to Jarra Gooley who has been selected to attend the Sydney North Girls Hockey Trials. Congratulations to the all Manly West students who represented Queenscliff SLSC at the Nipper NSW State Championships at Swansea Belmont last weekend. Congratulations to
Zach Rowland for his bronze medal in the U12 Beach Sprint Relay, Luana Da Rocha who came 5th in U11 Beach Flags and 8th in U11 Beach Sprints, Bronte Sholl and Milla
Graham-Smith with their 5th in the U11 2-person Rescue & Resuscitation, Luke Silver’s U9 Board Relay team came 7th and Eli Mork was a finalist in U10 Beach Flags and Sprints. Other students participating in the event were Will Farrar, Sophia Gee, Hanna Holmkvist, Jemima Hugman, Gabriel Lucas, Ali Rounsley, Finley Forbes and Jess Silver – all are congratulated for doing their very best in tough conditions.

Each week, class teachers present three Expectation Cards to acknowledge class members for
demonstrating our school expectations of Respect, Responsibility and Aspire. When a student in
Years 3-6 has collected four Expectation Cards they place them in the labelled boxes outside the
DP Office near Lost Property. K-2 students place the Expectation Cards in the red tin in my office or
on my chair, situated on the bottom floor of Boyle St Block (the Kindergarten and Year One building).
Expectation Certificates are presented at fortnightly assemblies in Years 3-6 and in weekly assemblies
for K-2 students. Names will also be published in Manly West Matters each fortnight.
Congratulations to the following students for gaining 4 Expectation Cards to
receive an Expectation Certificate: Gaia Snehor, Kiarra Hansen, Imogen Pooley,
Zoe Anderhov, Max Gooley, Scarlett Matthews, Lucy Whitehead, May Le,
Tao Philpot, Taylor Knott, Jake Smith, Benjamin O'Keefe, Leila Elder and
Phoenix Berbakov.
Special congratulations to Milo Westcar for gaining a Bronze Banner.
School Parking and Kiss and Drop Zones Reminder
Kindergarten students recently received a Kindergarten Orientation
Road Safety Library Bag issued by the NSW Government and
distributed by our P&C. We encourage Kindergarten parents/carers
to make the time to read the material within and discuss road rules
relevant to your child.
Manly West P&C have included a flyer re our School Kiss & Drop
Zone. We ask all parents to take extra care when driving and parking
in school zones and to follow the Kiss and Drop guidelines.

be able to use the online booking system to book interview times. Details will be in the newsletter
next week.
Hats
As part of our Student Wellbeing Policy, it is expected that all students have
and wear a school hat when participating in outside activities. We have a
number of students who do not have their hats at school. As part of our Sun
Safe Policy, students who do not have a hat are asked to play under the shade
shelters. We have had a high number of students who do not have a hat when
participating in SISA. All students in K-4 participate in SISA on Tuesdays. We
would appreciate all parents checking that their children have a school hat that
is labelled with their full name and class.
District Swimming Carnival
We wish our students who are representing Manly West all the best for the District Swimming
Carnival on Monday 11th March. Thank you to Mrs McMasters and Ms Martz who organised our
swimming carnival and our Manly West District team.
Year 6 Leadership
Year 6 students will attend the Young Leaders Imagination Conference next Monday. In Week 8, the
Student Prefect Team has a great opportunity to attend a camp at the Sydney Academy of Sport.
This provides the students with opportunities to network with other student leaders from schools in
the Northern Beaches Learning Alliance.

Library News
The 2019 Premier’s Reading Challenge (PRC) opened on Monday! At Manly
West we partner with the Premier to encourage and support wide reading for both learning and leisure at our school. Here is a quick rundown:
For students in K-2, they can read or be read to a total of 30 books from the PRC book lists to complete the challenge. Since they are exposed to many more than that at school, these children will automatically complete the PRC. However, if you would like to encourage your child to complete the challenge, they are eligible for extra prizes (see below).
Primary students are required to read 20 books independently from the PRC book lists. Books that were read since January can count, so many children have already done lots of reading since then for pleasure, homework and in class, too. There are a variety of titles, reading levels and genres on the book lists, so completing the PRC is quite achievable.
The PRC needs to be completed online before or by Friday, August 30th, 2019. All those who complete the challenge independently will receive an ASPIRE card, a bookmark, their name on the PRC Wall of Fame outside
the Library, their name published in the MW newsletter and an official certificate from the Premier at the end of the year. In fact, the amazing Yardley sisters have already completed the 2019 Premier’s Reading Challenge – fabulous reading, Alice (6M) & Juliet (3B)! For complete rules, a link to the Student Experience, tips for parents and how to log books to your reading
record online, follow this link https://online.det.nsw.edu.au/prc/home.html where you will find all that information and more! Students log on with their school user name and password. It’s quite easy, but please don’t hesitate to see me if you have any questions or concerns. Tomorrow is WORLD BOOK DAY! Year 2 students have been learning about celebrations this term, and during their library lessons they have brainstormed some amazing and fun ways to celebrate this special day.
These include, acting out a favourite story with your friends, eating book-shaped cakes to reading for the PRC sharing a book with your families at bedtime. These are just a few ideas you can use to celebrate the wonderful world of reading!
Happy reading and World Book Day!

Kitchen Garden News
In the Kitchen Garden this week…
Year 3 This week Year 3 are continuing their investigations of living things in the garden and whether they're friends or foes. Foes are sap-sucking bugs like aphids and stink bugs and friends are pollinators like butterflies and bees, and ladybirds that eat the aphids. The children are also making seed cards this week to show the
diversity of size and shape of seeds in nature. School Compost Bins Everyone who is bringing kitchen scraps to the garden to add to our school compost bins should be on the roster to help turn (aerate) the compost bins. Go to signupgenius.com search under my email address [email protected] for "Manly West Kitchen Garden" and sign yourself up for a day that suits you.
Hessian Sacks There are hessian sacks hanging on the school fence at the Boyle St Entrance. These are free and great as a compost blanket or as a blanket in your worm farm. It helps to keep to create a good environment for the macro and micro organisms that live in them. War on Waste
We are super excited to announce that we will be doing a waste audit at Manly West. More details to follow soon, watch this space!
Thank you, Angie Penn and Beth Dowdle
