CMS has declined reimbursement for hospital-acquired pressure ulcers (HAPU) since 2008. A team of nurses successfully secured funding, used technology to measure outcomes, and converted QI projects into comparative research. The application of the knowledge gained during the research cycle allowed UC Davis Health to lower their HAPU incidence while standardizing documentation and identifying those patients who are at highest risk for development of HAPU.
