Nado News A publication of Coronado High School 650 D Avenue Coronado, CA 92118 (619) 522-8907 Published Bi-Monthly Volume V May/June 2017 Dear Islander Families, Our school year is in its final weeks and there is much to celebrate, culminating in the Class of 2017’s Commencement Ceremony on Thursday, June 15th at 7:30 PM at Niedermeyer Field. Between now and then, we will enjoy the CoSA Spring Musical Cabaret, spring sports playoffs, prom, field trips, awards ceremonies, art exhibitions, dance and musical theatre performances, Powder Puff festivities, and more! (Note: Students must attend school regularly and on time, clear absences, and meet eligibility requirements related to discipline to participate in many of these events). During the month of May we host AP exams on the CHS campus. Students are excused from class during their testing time, but must attend regular CHS classes before and after exams. All exams begin at 8:00 AM or 12:00 PM and students may NOT be late or their exam will be forfeited (makeup tests are only available due to illness or event conflicts). We wish our students the best on these college-level exams and commend them for availing themselves of our school’s most challenging curricula. In May our juniors will take the California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress (CAASPP) in math and language arts. Thank you to our 11th graders and their English and Math teachers for implementing these state assessments. We continue to learn from these adaptive assessments in our efforts to provide students with curriculum aligned with Common Core standards and critical thinking skills. PTO has been busy the last two months. Besides providing lunches for our teachers and staff, we held a College Information Night for parents of 11th graders and we participated in Coronado High School’s first De-Stress Fest by bringing bubble blowing and beach balls to campus at lunch. As we wind down our year, we will be getting ready to help out with graduation activities. We also will be looking for people to be on the PTO Board for next year. People are needed for Staff Appreciation, Volunteer Coordination, Newsletter and Communication. Let me know if you would like to volunteer for one of these positions. The PTO Board is beginning to make some plans for the fall. We would like to do another Drunk and/or Distracted Driving course for the students as well as a Social Hosting talk for the parents. We will do a College Information night for 9th/10th grade parents, as well as one for juniors. Again, we would like to come up with activities so that parents can come on campus during the school day. The ones we have done this year have been a lot of fun. If you have ideas for talks or activities we can do, please let me know. We love to get parents engaged! Thanks for all of the help and support you have given us during the year. I hope your kids do well on their exams and have a great rest of the school year. Debbie McBride CHS PTO President [email protected]

Health Occupation Students of America (HOSA) is an international student organization recognized by the U.S. Department of Education and the Health Science Education Division of ACTE. HOSA's two-fold mission is to promote career opportunities in the health care industry and to enhance the delivery of quality health care to all people. Every year, high school students from the Coronado HOSA chapter prepare for competitions at the California State Leadership Conference (SLC). Over 2,000 students from secondary and post-secondary schools in California will attend the conference. Members compete in various health science competitions such as sports medicine, healthy lifestyles, or pharmacology. Students start studying as early as October in preparation for SLC in March. Coronado HOSA was founded in December 2010. It started small, with only seven members. The first few months consisted of fundraising to attend and compete at the State Leadership Conference in Sacramento in May 2011. Two members placed in the top ten during the Sports Medicine Competition at SLC that year. Since then, Coronado's HOSA chapter has continued to grow and today has over 50 members. Late in March, the Coronado High School HOSA chapter traveled to Sacramento for SLC. Many students competed, and those who did not compete served on Courtesy Corps, a branch of volunteer HOSA members that assists in setting up competitions and ensuring that SLC runs smoothly. Six Coronado High School HOSA members placed in the top ten in their competition; Emily Wood placed 10th in Clinical Nursing, Katie Larratt placed 8th in Pathophysiology, the team of Mateo Valles-Quintana and Isabela Martinez placed 8th in Emergency Medical Technician, Teresa Perez placed 3rd in Healthy Lifestyle, and Madi Cheever placed 2nd in Healthy Lifestyle. Larratt was also recognized for completing over 100 hours of community service at the UCSD Hillcrest Hospital with the Barbara James Service Award. Larratt, Perez, and Cheever all qualified to compete at the International Leadership Conference in Orlando, Florida, in June.

13 Reasons Why Q&A It is hard to escape the sensationalism of the newest "IT" thing, today it's "13 Reasons Why," the Netflix series was filmed and directed to reach teens on a personal level with issues like bullying, rape, and suicide. These are real issues facing Coronado's youth and we encourage all adults, parents, caregivers, and teachers, to be prepared to talk about these issues because regardless of whether or not your teen has watched the show the teens in this community are talking about it. Have some questions?? Attend Coronado SAFE's informal Q&A Thursday May 4th at 12:00pm at 1009 C Ave For more questions about this event please contact SAFE staff at 619-522-6884 or email Tory LaRochelle at [email protected]
