MASS INTENTIONS

CALENDAR CLUB WINNERS

I’m writing this on Tuesday morning, September 22nd, the day that Pope Francis will arrive for his first visit to the United States. By the time you read this, The Holy Father’s trip will almost be at an end. He is scheduled to leave the United States and return to Rome at 7:00 pm CST Sunday. This trip has been much anticipated. During his visit this week he will address both the United States Congress (the First Pope to do so) and address the United Nations. Although a number of Popes have addressed the United Nations, Pope Francis will be the first to address the assembly at their opening when many of the world leaders will be gathered in New York. The Holy Father will also be participating in the World Meeting of Families in Philadelphia. This will be truly a historic visit. His presence here in the United States will truly be a blessing and a challenge. The Holy Father has continued to call bishops, priest, religious and all the faithful to simplicity of life. Most recently in remarks made to clergy and religious in Cuba this past Sunday, the Holy Father went off script and pleaded with those gathered. “Love poverty like you love your mother. Wealth impoverishes. It takes away the best that we have. It makes us poor. It places our faith in something else. The spirit of poverty is a spirit of dispossession, of leaving everything to follow Jesus.” Pope Francis does not just talk the talk, he definitely walks the walk. His time in Argentina and his 2 ½ years as Pope have been a model of simplicity and that of embracing the poor. I have found his words and the example of his life both inspiring and challenging. I felt the same challenge as I read today’s Second Reading form the Letter of James. Our reading this weekend begins, “Come now, you rich, weep and wail over your impending miseries. Your wealth has rotted away, your clothes have become moth-eaten, your gold and silver have corroded, and that corrosion will be a testimony against you; it will devour your flesh like a fire.” These past weeks leading up to the papal visit I’ve heard many dismiss the Holy Father’s agenda by saying that he is not familiar with the United States; that he comes from a socialist country; and that he should not be speaking about politics or science. He should just stick to spiritual things. Yet, what the Holy Father is speaking about comes right out of Sacred Scripture. His call to simplicity and attention to the poor of the world isn’t a political or economic stand, it is a Scriptural one. If we are serious about our faith, it isn’t so easy to dismiss him and his message. That is the challenge. As I write this I’m not sure what his message has been this week. He is unpredictable and speaks often from his heart. I do know that whatever he has said this week will be a challenge to us individually and as a nation. Our challenge is to take to heart and to prayer what he has said and continue to reflect upon the message. Where is has challenged us or made us uncomfortable, let us pray for the grace not to dismiss it but to allow God’s grace to bring us conversion. Archbishop’s Annual Appeal Corner Receive the Gift: Your gift to the 2015-2016 Archbishop’s Annual Appeal reaches out to countless people in need throughout twenty three counties in northeast Nebraska. No matter where you turn, you find someone who will benefit from your kindness. Please prayerfully consider supporting this year’s Archbishop’s Annual Appeal. May we grown rich in the sight of God by being merciful to those in need.

Discussions with the Pastor: You are invited to come and visit with an idea, concern, question, or if you would just like to talk. Feel free to come alone or with others. This week I will be available Tuesday, September 29th from 6:00 to 7:00 pm and Thursday, October 1st from 4:30 to 5:30 pm.

At the time of his canonization, St. Pius X was called the “Saint of Our Times.” The Pius Spirit flowed from our patron saint and imbued the parish with an exceptional people-oriented focus. The Pius Spirit continues today. To honor and promote that spirit among the disciples in the Wednesday evening Religious Education Program, a “Spirit of Pius” award will be initiated in October where the catechists will issue the award to disciples who display one or more of these qualities of St. Pius X:

Generous – Pope Pius X gave generously of his time and

money to the poor.

Devoted – He advised all Catholics to receive Communion

frequently, and he lowered the age for reception of the

sacrament to seven.

Scholarly – Pope Pius X knew the importance of education,

and he was especially devoted to the faith formation of adults.

Caring – Regarding the social issues of the time, Pope Pius

X desired that the Church play a role in resolving those issues. He had a special place in his heart for the poor.

By following the example of parishioners, the disciples can come to know the Pius Spirit. The next generation needs to carry that banner into the future. Adult Faith Formation:
