RESOURCES FOR LESSON 1
Primary care
Having read through the text, answer these questions:
1. (MUST) What is the meaning of Primary Care?
2. (MUST) Who are the primary care providers? Say briefly what services each care provider gives
3. (MUST) You will now be given a primary care provider (for instance, walk in centre). Your task is to :
4. (MUST) What primary care services have you been to? (you don’t have to say why)
5. (COULD) The walk in centres were partly created to ease the pressure on hospitals - those of us who do not have any emergency need can go here and free up hospitals for those in need of emergency care. Research the internet to find out the waiting times at your local hospital.
Where is the nearest one?
What are the opening times?
What service do they provide?
RESOURCES FOR LESSON 2
Secondary & Tertiary care
1. (MUST) Let’s be clear about what these terms are:
2. (MUST) Another form of care is called Palliative or ‘end of life’ care. How is this service provided (i.e. what does it mean)?
3. (MUST) Hospices. This service provides care for people very close to the end of their lives. Your task is to research where the nearest one to you is and the kind of care it provides
4. (SHOULD) Hospices are charities. What does this mean and how do they raise money?
Definition of Secondary care Definition of Tertiary care

RESOURCES FOR LESSON 3
Allied Health Professionals
These professionals are vital to the NHS; without them it would be difficult to run the service. This lesson is all about what they do and the roles they perform.
1. (MUST) who are these people what do they do? Give at least 3 examples and for each, explain their roles
2. (MUST) What do clinical support staff do? Again, give at least 3 examples
3. (MUST) You are going to produce a poster based on ‘Check my Learning’ on page 71. Allied Health Professionals provide an essential service. In your recruitment poster, include the following:
Why they are a vital part of the NHS (look at the range of occupations on pages 70 - 71 and use the information on what they do)
You could choose 4 - 5 jobs from the list to say what jobs are on offer
You can just say ‘competitive wage & hours’ but you may be able to find the salaries for these jobs using an internet search.
Make people realise how important to saving peoples lives these jobs are
RESOURCES FOR LESSON 4
Services for children & young people
There are all kinds of issues and problems that may come at us throughout our lives. They can unfortunately also happen when we are young
1. (MUST)
2. (MUST) What reasons are there why young people may need support?
3. (MUST) There are 3 types of care. Fill the grid in:
What qualities do you think a good social care worker for young people needs?
Foster care
What does it provide? Why might children use this type of care?
Residential care
What does it provide? Why might children use this type of care?
Youth work
What does it provide?
Why might children use this type of care?

services for children & young people cont.
4. (MUST) Read through the scenarios on page 73. For each, say what positives the young person gets out of it
5. (SHOULD) It may not be all positive in each of the scenarios. Read through again and pick out the negatives. Add to your answers with more negatives that you could imagine could happen or develop
6. (HAG) Youth clubs - they can be very popular or they can be very poor. Imagine you have been asked to run a youth club - what would you aim to achieve? How would you do it (think about the activities you would put on, getting local businesses involved etc.)?

POSTER TIME! (A3 or word document)
Include the following:
Look at the activity on page 75. for each person with specific needs, explain what the best type of care would be
How each works & what they do
RESOURCES FOR LESSON 7
Informal social care
1. Who are informal carers?
2. What does the term mean?
3. What do they do? How are you going to set this out? We are leaving it up to you - we usually tell you what to do and how to do it, so for this lesson we are just giving you the questions and leaving it up to you how you will complete this task.
Be creative! The questions in the text book are suggesting a poster - you can do just that. That’s fine but you could just write answers, produce a booklet that people could learn from (local councils do it this way), or you could imagine you are a journalist interviewing different people who deliver different kinds of informal care.

Learning Aim A1: Human growth and development across life stages
You have learned a great deal since we started this
course and now it’s time to reflect on that learning.
This is not a test! This exercise is to make sure you
have a good working understanding of the course
so far.
You may need to look through your work to remind
yourself. All we want to know is how secure you feel
your understanding is before we start on the
assignment
You should use your skills, knowledge and
understanding to:
1. What does the term ‘primary care’ mean?
2. What are the main sources of primary care?
3. What is secondary care?
4. What is tertiary care?
5. What is ‘end of life’ care and what is the role of
hospices?
6. Who are allied health professionals and what services
do they provide?
7. Do you understand the difference between foster care,
residential care and youth work?
8. There are 3 types of care for people with specific needs
- residential care, respite and domiciliary care. How well
do you understand the difference?
9. Can you name 3 examples of age related health
problems?
10. What life style choices are available for older people?
11. There are 4 sources of informal care, what are they?
12. How does informal care help the elderly - can you name
at least 3?
RESOURCES FOR LESSON 8
Physical Barriers
This is Emma. She has difficulties walking and she uses an electric wheelchair.
She lives on Candlemans Lane near t he school. Tomorrow she is coming to the Academy. She is attending an ‘old folks’ party in the library Before it starts Emma (along with the rest of the old folk) will be given a tour of the building. You need to do an audit of access around the academy.
It is your job to check all the potential hazards Emma may encounter on her way from home to the Academy and whilst she is here.
Here is a checklist of what you need to consider:
Getting from home to the Academy (you will not be with her during this time)
Access to all the floors of the Academy
Visiting the sports hall
Going outside to look at the sports field
Going to the toilet when she needs to
Being able to visit the Gym/E3
How are you going to present this?
It could be a simple word document that lists the potential hazards and the tour of the building (route etc.)
A poster with diagrams
You can work in pairs to complete this assignment
This diagram was
taken from the
internet
RESOURCES FOR LESSON 9
Sensory Barriers
This is Stevie Wonder. Blind from birth. Gifted pianist and singer.
No barrier to superstardom!
1. (MUST) What are out senses and why are they so important to us?
2. (MUST) We rely so much on our vision. What are the consequences if we are not able to see very well? What can people with very poor vision use to help?
3. (MUST) Why can poor hearing be frightening?
4. (MUST) What can health and social care providers do to help people with vision and hearing impairment?
5. (COULD) You are a health and social care advisor. You give advice on how to help visually and hearing impaired people to GP services, dentists and hospitals. What advice would you give to a group of doctors who are setting up a surgery? Use the information on page 83
6. (HAG) What is Braille? How and where is it used? Try to construct a simple sentence using braille (for instance, ‘it is cold today.’)
Remember HAG (Have A Go) is there to give you a challenge, to push your learning - give it a go!
RESOURCES FOR LESSON 10
Social, cultural & psychological barriers
Introductory activity: this is the teacher led discussion at the start of the lesson - what do the word mean? Write up the discussion under the headings:
2. (MUST) There are 8 different factors why people may be reluctant to access health and social care services. From the list on page 84, choose 4 and explain why they are barriers. Set it our in a table like the one in the text.
3. (MUST) What cultural factors may stop people seeking help?
4. (MUST) I the speec bubble on page 85, 4 religions are represented. For each, explain what the barriers are (you can set it out in a table)
5. (SHOULD) Breaking down barriers is obviously very important when it comes to peoples’ health. Suggest ways in which could be done
6. (SHOULD & finish for Homework) We have looked at 3 different kinds of barriers that prevent people accessing health and social care. To make sure you keep these in your mind, give a brief explanation of each, using the following headings:
Barriers to accessing health & social care services
Physical Sensory Social, care & psychological
Write the information in these boxes
Meanings
Social Cultural Psychological
RESOURCES FOR LESSON 11
Language & Geographical barriers
The theme we have been looking at is barriers that people may face when they try to access health and social care services. This lesson looks at 2 more.
Your task for this lesson is to take on the role of the teacher
Teachers spend a lot of time producing worksheets and lessons. Your task now is to produce a worksheet that students can work through to understand language an geographical barriers.
You will need to read through pages 86 - 89. Use all the information on the pages including the ‘Did you know’ sections.
Your teacher will help with ideas, but use this checklist:
What do you want the students to know by the end of the lesson and how will you check?
What are the barriers?
How can the barriers be overcome?
Give some examples that the students can use in explaining barriers and how they can be got over (don’t use the examples in the text book - be imaginative)
What activities will you have the students doing? Questions? Posters? Presentation?
You are producing 2 worksheets. The first one is the one you give to the students to work through. The second is exactly the same BUT with the answers included.
RESOURCES FOR LESSON 12
Intellectual Barriers
Try explaining a simple task to understand why intellectual and learning difficulties can be major barriers - try explaining how to make a cup of tea
Types of disabilities 3 reasons for disabilities
How can it affect health?
3 types of support available:
Lack of literary skills are a problem because...
RESOURCES FOR LESSON 13
Financial Barriers
The National Health Service (NHS) provides a lot of care free of charge. But not all our care is free. Your task for this lesson is to look at the case studies below and find out what is free and what needs to be paid for. Work through all the questions.
Joe works full time but is on a low wage. He needs dental care
Harriet feels unwell. She visits the doctor and is prescribed antibiotics. Harriet works full time and is well paid
George is a full time student at University - what free treatment is he entitled to? (you will need to do an internet search for this)
What free care are retired people able to receive? (be care with this research as it depends on income)
People with long term illnesses may need to have time off work. They will not get full pay for all the time off work. Do an internet research and find out what income from their employer they would expect to receive

7. Who pays for dental and eye care and who doesn’t?
Preparation for learning Aim A
assignment
The knowledge you need for this learning aim is an understanding of the different types of health and social care services and the barriers that can potentially prevent people accessing them.
The series of activities here are similar to those on pages 96 - 97 of the text book. They cover what you need to know for the assignment for this learning aim.
1. Simple definitions:
Give examples
2. Who are Allied Care Workers? Give examples of when you may need these kinds of services
3. There are 6 kinds of barriers potentially preventing people accessing care. All you need to do is simply list them and give an example for each on how they can prevent health care access
4. Think about foster care and residential care. What are they designed to do? Give an example for each of what may be happening in a persons’ life when they may need these services
5. Complete the 2 assessment activities on pages 96 - 97. these are the kinds of questions you will find in the assignment
These activities are preparation time.
When you have completed them we will talk through them as a class and compare our work.

RESOURCES FOR LESSON 15
Empowering & Promoting
independence
1. (MUST) When working with vulnerable people, care workers will always have 2 words at the forefront of their thinking - Empowerment & Independence
Give a definition for both
2. (MUST) think about yourself - give 3 examples of how you have empowerment and independence
3. (COULD) You can easily be confused with these 2 words and the meanings can blur into 1. to help you, think of 2 ways in which you do not feel empowered or independent (thinking about the restrictions because of your age may be a good start)
4. (MUST) Under what circumstances can a person lose their empowerment? The text book is very good for this - don’t waste your time with the internet!
5. (COULD) Now you have identified people who have lost their sense of empowerment, give examples of how they have lost it
6. (MUST) Under what circumstances can a person lose their independence?
7. (COULD) Now you have identified people who have lost their sense of independence, give examples of how they have lost it
8. (MUST) All care workers live by a CODE OF PRACTICE. For care workers, this is called ‘CARE VALUES’ - they should always put the people they care for first and give them respect (this is called a ‘PERSON CENTRED APPROACH’)
There are 7 care values - what are they?
9. (COULD) For each of the care values, give an example of how a care worker would use them in practice
10. (HAG) Care workers may not always get it right. Looking after other people can be very stressful. Give examples of how these care values could go wrong
L.A: B - Demonstrate care values & review own practice
B1 - Care Values
Every single one of us need help and support during our lives. Some of us will need it from birth, some may be involved in an accident or suffer an illness, whilst others will need it toward the end of our lives
Code of Practice? This means how you should do things
RESOURCES FOR LESSON 16
Respect for others
This is one of the BIG words in life. It means so much to the quality of our lives.
Try to remember the following saying and make it part of your life:
Until you prioritise kindness you will never lead a fulfilling life
Class discussion:
What does the word ‘respect’ mean to you? How do you show it? How does it make you feel when you know others are respecting you?
Showing respect is a big issue in social care. We have a pretty good idea about what it means. So, to get it into your heads, you are going to produce a poster about:
What respect means
How we show it
How it makes us feel (to give and receive)
AND, importantly, because this is about H&SC, how to show respect to those with mental health needs, older people & adolescents (use the information in the text book)
RESOURCES FOR LESSON 17
Maintaining Confidentiality
You are the manager of a care home for the elderly. You have employed 3 new care workers. Before they can start work with the care users (the elderly people who live there), they have to be trained on the ‘does & don’ts.’
The first training session is on confidentiality. Care worker are not allowed to talk about a care user to another care user or anybody who does not work there.
Your task is to produce an information sheet that will go on display in the staff room that reminds the care workers why confidentiality is really important in their work. You need to cover all of the following -
Why confidentiality is important
How a breach of confidentiality can harm people
The kinds of information that care workers need to keep confidential
When it is the right thing to do to tell the manager about something that you have been told confidentially
What could be the consequences to the care worker if they breach (break) the confidentiality rule?
How to keep information private and secure
What are the dangers of using social media?
A long standing tip on how to do things: 1. First important rule: do not go
straight to the internet
2. Use the information in the textbook - it will usually have all the information you need
3. When you have used all the information from the textbook, research the internet for additional information and for images that will enhance your work
RESOURCES FOR LESSON 18
Preserving dignity &
Effective communication
For this lesson we are combining 2 topics (in the textbook they are on pages 104 - 107).
We want you to prepare a presentation. It could be to an assembly of your year group, an audience made up of care workers…. You get the idea.
You need to cover the following points (you do not have to answer them question by question):
1. Dignity is important because…
2. Examples of how a person can lose their dignity
3. Examples of how to demonstrate dignity (that you are showing someone you respect their dignity)
4. Why good communication skills are important
5. Examples of good communication skills
Don’t forget - it’s up to you, but here are some suggestions:
You could deliver it as a speech (so you will need to write your points down in bullet form or write out a script)
You could do it as a power point presentation with different slides for each point
It could be a poster that you would talk to the audience about and then display around the building
You could work with a friend to produce a role play (of course, you could do it by yourself and have 2 imaginary people performing the role play). You will need to produce a script if you choose to do it this way
RESOURCES FOR LESSON 19
Safeguarding & duty of care
This is one of the most important things a care worker needs to be aware of. As a care worker, you have a responsibility to protect people you work with from abuse. A care user has a right to be protected from abuse.
1. (MUST) Why is safeguarding important?
2. (MUST) Unfortunately, there are many types of abuse. Give examples of 5 and describe how this kind of abuse can happen
3. (MUST) You now need to imagine that you are a care worker. Give examples of signs that you may identify indicating that abuse may be taking place
4. (MUST) as a care worker, you strongly suspect that abuse is taking place. What should you do?
5. (SHOULD) Complete the activity on page 109
6. (COULD) Look at ‘check my learning’ on page 109. What safeguarding measures would a care home need to have in place for a resident suffering from dementia? This will require you to do an internet search; you could start by doing a search for a dementia care home in your area to see what kind of facilities they provide
RESOURCES FOR LESSON 20
Promoting anti-discriminatory
practice & applying care values in a
compassionate way
Discrimination can come in many forms but they all usually result in the same outcome - leaving a person feeling frightened, depressed and often lonely.
The world goes to a lot of trouble to stop discrimination - how successful do you think it has been?
There is a saying we should all live by -
Until you prioritise kindness, you will never lead a
fulfilling life
Showing kindness to others makes you feel very special about yourself.
Acting in an anti-discriminatory way and showing people you care are important for all of us and especially care workers. Care workers not only need to say they care but hey also need to show it.
1. (MUST) Complete the 3 questions on page 111
2. (MUST) Describe what the word ‘empathy’ means
3. (MUST) How do we really show that we emphasise with people and that we care for them?
