• The following slides provide some information on the different food groups with suggested quantities that should be eaten from each one daily
• At the end of these slides there is a simple resource to illustrate the effect of poor diet to children
Healthy Eating
How to have a healthy diet
• Eat from the five groups of foods• Eat the right quantities• Drink water• 3 meals a day
All these things together with some exercise will help to make a better healthier lifestyle
Fresh Fruit and Vegetables
• Rich in vitamins and fibre
• Aim to have 5 servings from either fresh, canned, frozen, dried or juice
• A third of food should come from this group
Meats and Alternatives• This includes, meat, poultry, fish, eggs,
nuts, pulses, seeds, and soya such as tofu.
• Foods in this category should be eaten in moderation
• They are major sources of protein, vitamins and minerals
Bread and Cereals• About a third of food should come from
this group.
• Includes, bread, potatoes, rice, pasta, chapatis and cereals
• Many are rich in fibre, vitamins and minerals
• All are good sources of starch
Dairy Foods• This group includes milk, cheese, yoghurt
and fromage frais
• Moderate amounts should be consumed of these products
• These are good sources of protein and calcium,
• They contain saturated fats
Fats and Alternatives
These items should be the smallest proportion of your diet
• Includes butter, oils, sweets, cakes, fizzy drinks, sugar
• Most contain protein and calcium
• Contain saturated fat – try to choose a lower fat alternative
Healthy Eating – Drink Water!
• Two thirds of our weight is water so drink lots
• It helps regulate body processes
• Can help fill your stomach up and reduce your craving for food

• 1 medium apple
• 1 handful of grapes
• 1 medium banana
• 1 cereal bowl of salad
• 1 glass of orange juice
• 12 pineapple chunks
• 1 medium pear
• 2 satsuma
• 2 medium plums
• 7 cherry tomatoes
•1 tablespoon of raisins
•1 handful of vegetable sticks
