The problem
Unwanted nuisance tripping
The IEC 61008 andIEC 61009standards imposethe use of a 0.5 µs/100 kHz dampedoscillator wave (ringwave) to test theability of residualcurrent protectiondevices to withstandoperationaldischarges. AllRCCBs and RCDblocks must passthe test with a peakcurrent equal to200 A.With regard toatmosphericdischarges, IEC61008 and 61009standards establishthe 8/20 µs surgecurrent test with3000 A peak currentbut limit therequirement toresidual currentprotection devicesclassified asselective. No test isrequired for othertypes.
Standards
If there isdisturbance on theelectric network,RCCBs or RCDblocks which arenormally in theinstallation trip andinterrupt the circuiteven if there is noreal fault.
Disturbance of thiskind is mostcommonly causedby:
- operationaldischargesproduced byconnecting ordisconnecting ofloads (opening orclosing of
protection andcommanddevices, startingand stopping ofmotors, switchingon and off offluorescentlighting, etc.); ifconditions in thecircuit areabruptlymodified, thiscauses temporarydisturbances suchas impulsevoltages at highfrequency;
- atmosphericdischarges causedby direct orindirect lightningonto the power
line; whenlightning strikes, itgenerates anelectromagneticfield whichproduces atransient impulsevoltage in thenetwork; thisgeneratescapacitive earthleakage in thenetwork cables.
In thesecircumstances, thenuisance tripping ofthe residual currentprotection device isunwanted since itdoes not prevent therisks caused bydirect and indirect
contact.A sudden andunjustified cut off ofthe power supply,on the other hand,may cause veryserious problemsand jeopardize thecontinuity of serviceof refrigerators,freezers, computers,lighting and air-conditioningsystems, burglaralarms, datatransmissionsystems, etc.

The ABB solution
AP range of RCCB and RCD blocksThe AP range of anti-nuisance trippingRCCBs and RCDblocks of ABB SACEpass the ring wave testat 0.5 µs/100 kHz andalso withstand the8/20 µs impulse withthe same peak currentof 3000 A prescribedfor selective devices.For this reason, theyoffer the most directsolution to theproblem of unwantedtripping caused byatmospheric oroperationaldischarges.The electroniccomponents they areequipped with iscapable ofdistinguishingbetween temporaryleakage caused bynetwork disturbancesand permanentleakage caused byactual faults and onlyopens the circuit if thelatter occurs.A slight delay in thetripping time has alsobeen introduced intothe AP range of RCCBsand RCD blockswhich neverthelessrespects the safetylimits imposed by thestandards (trippingtime at
2 I∆n ≤ 150 ms).When installed inelectric circuits, theytherefore preventunwanted tripping ininstallations in theresidential andcommercial sectorwhere continuity ofservice is importantand, at the same time,guarantee traditionalresidual currentprotection.
The AP range ofRCCBs and RCDblocks are available inA and AC types and in2P and 4P versions
with rated currents of25 A and 63 A.Sensitivity equal to30 mA guaranteesprotection againstindirect contact andadditional protectionagainst directcontact.

To obtain continuity of service forpriority circuits and, at the sametime, protect the loads andinstallations from transientovervoltage peaks, we recommendcombining the AP range of RCCBsand RCD blocks with OVR surgeprotective devices (SPD).
For more effective and extensiveprotection, a cascaded system onseveral levels, as shown in thediagram, may be useful.
